It is so very hard to deliver a perfect presentation on any technology. Steve Jobs did yet another earlier today. If you have ever had to face a crowd and hope the equipment all works and you get your words all correct without stumbling, you know what I'm talking about. In this 71min46sec iPad 2 demonstration, the CEO of Apple, noticeably weaker from his health challenges, delivers a flawless, realistic, inspiring, believable, and understandable explanation of a 1.3 pound revolutionary device that can be used for education, business and home ... all with such ease and grace. I know he must have rehearsed this over and over and over. I would venture to say that most CEOs would wish for one keynote event in their lifetime as good as Steve Jobs did today. He does this at least once a year. And over the last 30 years. Am I too much of a "fan boy"? Probably. But you must remember that in 1994-95 we had to tolerate Windows PC bravado from IT geeks that spelled out Apple's death every day. These are the good days for Apple. The world no longer calls Steve Jobs "embattled" or any other negative label. He continues to show all of us that a complete business turn-around is possible. That persistence does pay off. This time last year Apple stock was around $250/share. Today it sells for $352/share. As I painfully watch his frail frame grace the stage in San Francisco one more time, I am in awe of his devotion to innovation. I love Steve Jobs for what he has done for all of us. I only hope he can be with us for many more years. Please take a moment to watch this delivery. The number of videos. The attention to detail. The strength of his team. http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/1103pijanbdvaaj/event/index.html Dave P.S. DO NOT LEAK. Destroy this top-secret strategy document after reading. It could be devastating to our business interests if it fell into the wrong hands ? like The New York Times or something. Fellow Comcastians, this is a difficult time for the cable TV business. We?ve been losing subscribers. These young people today, with their loud hair and long music! They don?t watch TV on TV sets anymore. They watch it online! Free episodes on Hulu.com. Ad-free episodes from iTunes. Unlimited past seasons on Netflix. These people are actually proud to cancel their cable TV service. Not a healthy trend. We?re not going to sit here watching the Internet nibble away at our very existence, people. We?re not going to behave like the music industry, either. We won?t start suing people for going with the technological flow. We need to work with the changing times instead of fighting them. We may be the most hated cable company, but we?re also the biggest. We can do pretty much anything we want. So for the last few years, we?ve been fighting technology with technology. We started by creating xfinitytv.com, a Web site that acts like the world?s biggest TiVo. We let Comcast subscribers with a plan costing more than $58 a month watch recent shows online, whenever they want, most at no extra charge. We have 150,000 TV shows and movies available. Kind of like Hulu, actually, except that we have all the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and 85 others) and Hulu is missing some big ones, like CBS and PBS. That?s enormous. People don?t want to watch a certain show by tuning in at 8 p.m. on Thursday on CBS anymore. People want on-demand, people. Our customers watch 350 million shows a month on our site. And that?s only one of the Big Three Internet/TV Synergies. A second one is remote DVR programming. That is, you can program your Comcast cable box to record shows using the mouse and keyboard, in a Web browser, as TiVo owners have been able to do for years. And the third synergy is remote control: changing the channel on your TV, using your laptop. (It?s loads of fun when your spouse is downstairs trying to watch ?The Bachelor.?) But the Web browser was only the beginning. The new frontier is the tablet, people. Imagine using your iPad or Android tablet as the world?s thinnest, lightest, most portable wireless TV. Park it on the kitchen table while you?re chopping salad. Park it on the bathroom counter while you?re washing up. Let your children clutch it in bed when they?re home sick. Well, you can stop imagining. Our new Xfinity app for iPad is a thing of beauty. Frankly, it?s a lot smoother, better-looking and easy to understand than the Web site. Drag your finger vertically on the TV guide to scroll through your channels. Drag horizontally to slide later in the day?s schedule. It?s a touch-screen remote, too. Tap a network?s name to change channels on your TV ? a lot more fun, and more comprehensible, than hitting numbers on a traditional remote. Or use the iPad to program your DVR. Tap a show?s name to reveal a Record button (and a Record Series button). Beats the heck out of painstakingly clicking out a show?s name using an onscreen alphabet. Our iPad app also does that on-demand thing, and here?s where things get confusing. Tap OnDemand to view a list of 25,000 TV shows and movies, mostly free, that you can play instantly ? on your TV. Once again, you?re using the iPad only as a remote control, not as a TV. But if you tap Play Now, you taste the honey. You can browse or search 3,000 hours of recent TV shows and movies, and begin playing them instantly on the iPad. It?s a fantastic experience, with good picture and sound quality. Yes, our iPad app is not perfect. It has some bugs, for one thing. Furthermore, the shows are depicted as thumbnail rectangles, often with truncated titles (want to watch ?Monsters vs...??). You really ache for a simple list. When you choose an On Demand show on the iPad, the TV first shows a confirmation screen, requiring your O.K. You shouldn?t have to hunt for a second remote to get the show going. And above all, we need to beef up that catalog of iPad-playable shows. That 3,000 hours isn?t really very much ? in fact, at the moment, it?s almost exclusively movies and premium channels (HBO, Showtime and so on). You?re not going to find ?60 Minutes? or ?Glee? or ?Nova.? But our negotiating teams are going nonstop, and our C.E.O. has said he won?t quit until every show in your Comcast package is available to watch online or on your gadgets. You should also know that we?re working on the ultimate: live TV on the iPad within your home. All your channels, real time, in your hand. Can you imagine? Well, we can, because we have it working in our labs in Philadelphia. We?ll have it ready by the end of the year. But let?s face it, people: that?s not good enough. We?re not the only cable operators in town, and our competitors are breathing down our necks. E-mail: pogue at nytimes.com TIME WARNER New iPad app later this month. It will deliver that amazing live-TV-on-the-tablet thing. No remote-control or DVR-programming features yet, and it will offer only about 36 channels in the first version. But they?re surely hammering out network deals just as fast as we are. CABLEVISION It already has an iPad/iPhone/Android app that lets you program your DVR and even see what?s on it. By the end of this month, it will be the first with an iPad app that offers full streaming of all the channels you subscribe to. On your iPad. So sweet. AT&T U-VERSE It has the same kind of Web site we do ?100,000 shows ready to watch for subscribers ? and a wicked pretty app (for iPhone, Touch, Android, iPad, Windows 7 Phone and BlackBerry) that?s a remote control, does DVR programming and lets you download shows to take with you, so you can watch outside the home. Only a few shows are available for downloading that way (ABC/Disney and ESPN stuff mainly), and they don?t work on iPad. But wow ? what a great idea. You?ve already paid for your TV. Why shouldn?t you be allowed to take with you? VERIZON FIOS It has remote and DVR-programming apps, and you can buy shows to watch on your PC. It says it will offer streaming live TV on the iPad by the end year?s end. SATELLITE DirecTV has a new iPad remote-control app. Some Dish boxes have Sling players built in, which lets you watch your recordings or live TV anywhere on phones and computers. (Of course, the Sling player isn?t unique to Dish; anyone can buy one.) We have a lot of work to do. The Comcast Android app that we released this week doesn?t play any video ? it?s just a remote control and DVR-programming tool. We want to bring video to the iPhone and Touch, too. Above all, we, and our competitors, need to build up our spotty catalog. Forget getting back to the moon or reducing our oil consumption ? let?s set a national goal to get all TV shows available online by 2015! Times are changing, people. We?re changing too. We?re hedging bets like mad ? heck, we own 32 percent of Hulu. And in the end, if the world wants to watch TV online, we won?t exactly be crying ? don?t forget, we sell high-speed Internet service, too. Hate to say it, but this competition stuff makes our jobs a lot harder. We?ll have to keep making TV better and more convenient, or else we?ll lose customers. Customers. Sheesh. If it weren?t for them, this might actually be a pleasant business. E-mail: pogue at nytimes.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We didn't get any fresh inventory until mid-day today, so our production was principally de-manufactured Macs. We de-manufactured nine Macs and sent three displays along to be recycled. We refurbished three Macs bringing our all-time total to 2,881. The pallet of Macs we received today did not have any USB keyboards or mice. As we go through the Macs that have been set aside for more intensive work, Tucker last week began troubleshooting our newest Mac ever, the first Intel Power Mac, which came to us partially disassembled. The parts came in during two different weeks, making the matching of components "interesting." Today, he got the coveted startup chime, and was able to read a hard disk inside when the PowerMac was booted in Target Disk mode. Alas, still no video. Who knows when another video card that new will come through our door so we can continue to bring this Mac back to life... The parking arrangements in the Goodwill lot across the street from our 2400 East Carson St. location remain the same. No hassles in finding a spot on the street! If you think you may want to join us some Friday, please send me your car make, color and license number so we can let Goodwill know you will be in the lot. Our next work day will be Friday, March 11, 2011. We hope to see you there! Tomorrow, Saturday, March 5, will see many of us joining to help Dave Sevick's ComputeReach pack and label Macs purchased from Goodwill for future ComputeReach clients. Square's credit card reader for iOS/Android devices is pretty awesome?it lets anybody quickly and easily start taking credit payments. But according to Douglass Bergeron, the CEO of competing company Verifone, the device itself isn't hardware-encrypted, meaning anyone could write an app that strips unprotected info from your card. Verifone's smear campaign is impressive, to say the least. They've launched a site dedicated to attacking Square and released, for anyone to download, a demo version of a Square skimming app their own engineers developed. (Without the skimming abilities actually built in.) They're also sending everything to all of the major credit companies, like Visa, Mastercard and others. Somehow Verifone fails to mention though they've got their own competing product in the mobile payments space. Here's the reality: In order for your card to get "skimmed" by a fake Square reader, you'd have to hand over your card to the fraudster in the first place to allow it to be scanned. Would you really hand over your credit card to somebody you didn't trust (at least enough to pay them for goods or services) in the first place? And if that vendor is scamming you, how is it so different from a situation where, you hand a credit card over to a waiter in a restaurant and they secretly skim it in the back? As to making potential skimming devices widely available, there's this other thing that does that called the internet. Bergeron thinks Square should recall all their readers until they find a way to secure the device. Square should definitely do everything it can to make the devices as secure as possible (encryption is never a bad thing), but you can probably keep swiping at places you trust without freaking out for now, despite Verifone's best efforts to make that happen. [Verifone via GigaOM] DISCUSSION THREADS Featured AllStart a new thread vic06 Wed 09 Mar 2011 6:08 PM Reminds me of this story. Verifone should warn about photo cameras too. [kerfuffles.blogsome.com] pixelsnader @vic06 Wed 09 Mar 2011 8:08 PM It's quite a stupid idea to have all the data visible on a credit card anyway. Security flaw from Square? I say the concept of credit cards as such is one huge security fuckup. At least add a PIN code or something (won't fix entirely, but will make it a lot harder for frauds). minibeardeath @pixelsnader Thu 10 Mar 2011 1:12 AM most credit cards have a number on the back for verification pixelsnader @minibeardeath Thu 10 Mar 2011 11:35 AM A number on the back is still visible directly on the card. If I lose my bank card they either need to know my code or they have to try up to 10.000 codes. If you lose your card, they pick it up and can use it immediately. minibeardeath @pixelsnader Thu 10 Mar 2011 10:52 PM That is true. The flip side, is that a purchase made with a credit card is not actually paid for until you pay your bill meaning you can cancel the fake charges, but its far harder to get the money back in your bank account if they steal your debit or ATM card. pixelsnader @minibeardeath Thu 10 Mar 2011 11:30 PM What happens if you cancel those charges? The store gets no money? At any rate, someone gets screwed - either you or the store. With a PIN the chances of anyone (your chance + shop chance) getting screwed are lower. And who says they can't have payment canceling and a PIN? minibeardeath @pixelsnader Fri 11 Mar 2011 12:52 AM Good points Edited by minibeardeath at 03/11/11 12:56 AM See 3 more replies by andy.eakin, brandon.burnham, JMUHOBO In order to view comments on gizmodo.com you need to enable JavaScript. From Ruppert Message-ID: <4D7BA4C6.5040103@verizon.net> Just putting two and two together: (This if for you forward-thinking pessimists like me. ) A few weeks ago, my wife and children were vacationing, and had just checked into a motel. My kids were excited about being able to swim in the indoor pool and the other amenities, and started throwing Mom's keys around, keep-away style. Well, as kids are prone to do (true story) someone hid the keys in the microwave oven. Yep, the next one turned it on. Mom screamed, but too late. Later, the van wouldn't start. After towing, jumping, diagnosis, and an extra night in the motel ($300, not priceless) I (a dad/husband who works out of town) drove the three hours to deliver my spare key to Kathy. The tiny digital chip circuit in the fat part of the key had been fried by a second or two in the microwave oven! Moral/point: Couldn't a hand-held device be produced to zap chips in keys, mobile devices, computers, you name it, that would immobilize all our technology-and us for a while- that could fall into evil hands and used against us? Just thinking. Mark Ruppert -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You'll see information on weapons-grade EMP devices there. And then there's http://www.amazing1.com/emp.htm , selling "plans" for luggable devices. I don't think you'll ever encounter anything as small as an iPhone that can do this. The biggest danger does seem to be the youngsters and their urge to find out "what happens if I do THIS?". Your keys, your iPhone, and any tech that fits into a microwave oven, they are at risk. Hope this eases that set of concerns. I think we can feel free to worry about something else now. /Off Topic - Marty Swartz On Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 11:52 AM, Mark Ruppert wrote: > Have we hot ourselves in the foot? > Just putting two and two together: > > ??? We blew through the inventory we received last week, leaving our cupboard almost bare. We refurbished 12 Macs, and de-manufactured nine more. Our all-time total is now 2,893. Again, there were no USB keyboards or mice. The Intel Power Mac Tucker has been nursing is at a temporary dead end. The video card is definitely bad, and we have no card new enough to replace it. Hope the dust doesn't get too deep on this one in the meantime.... The parking arrangements in the Goodwill lot across the street from our 2400 East Carson St. location remain the same. No hassles in finding a spot on the street! If you think you may want to join us some Friday, please send me your car make, color and license number so we can let Goodwill know you will be in the lot. As our waiting inventory is almost nill, and two of our regular crew will be in Florida next week, we've declared next week Apple CRC Spring Break. We'll celebrate by looking at photos from the beach Fitz and Charlie will send us from their iPhone/iPod Touches. I'm sure there will be some very interesting pictures of seashells or Pirates spring training.... Our next work day will be Friday, March 25, 2011. We hope to see you there! Robert A. Google v. Microsoft v. Mozilla v. BlackBerry! Message-ID: PWN2OWN - Apple v. Google v. Microsoft v. Mozilla v. BlackBerry! http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2011/03/14/pwn2own-2011-results/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nakedsecurity+%28Naked+Security+-+Sophos%29 If you're interested in computer security, you've probably heard of PWN2OWN. It's a competition which has become an annual fixture at the annual CanSecWest conference in Vancouver, British Columbia. The competition gets its name because, as the CanSecWest organisers explain, "If you can execute arbitrary code (PWN) on these [laptops or mobile phones] through a previously undisclosed browser (Firefox, IE, Safari) exploit, you can go home with one (OWN)." The browsers under fire this year were: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. The mobile phones up for bombardment were: Dell Venue Pro running Windows 7, iPhone 4 running iOS, Blackberry Torch 9800 running Blackberry 6 OS and Nexus S running Android. Whether you think the buying of vulnerabilities and exploits (through cash payments or prizes) is morally acceptable or not, it's a mainstream practice in the security industry these days. Indeed, the pwn2own competition is run by none other than HP, owners of the TippingPoint Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) brand. ZDI is a programme which pays for vulnerabilities, thus rewarding bug-hunters for results which are fed back into the security community rather than sold to cybercrooks. Pwn2own adds some overt competitiveness into the business of bug-finding! HP promised to publish the names of the winners "as they (presumably) succeed", but though the contest ended on Friday last week, no official announcement has yet been made. But that doesn't matter - thanks to social networks, the results hit the internet in near-real time, so we already know that the following were pwned: * Safari * Internet Explorer * iPhone 4 * BlackBerry Torch 9800 Firefox, Chrome, Android and Windows Mobile 7 all remained unpwned. Apparently, even the most recent version of Safari, 5.0.4, released just a day before the competition, is still vulnerable to the attack. On the other hand, the most recent iOS upgrade for the iPhone, iOS 4.3, heads off the exploit used at pwn2own. That's good news for iPhone 4 and 3GS users, who can upgrade, but bad news for earlier Apple devices, which can't be upgraded. Technically speaking, Google Chrome didn't actually survive an attack - the contestant who was due to take it on didn't turn up. Nevertheless, the rules are the rules, so Chrome wasn't pwned. However, the software flaw used in successfully attacking the BlackBerry was present in Google's Chrome browser, which is based around the same Webkit codebase. In a laudably quick response, Google almost immediately patched the offending code in Chrome. By the way, we often hear that software is getting worse, because ever more vulnerabilities are being found. But that's not surprising, now that companies like HP openly pay researchers for finding vulnerabilities and revealing them under controlled conditions. There's much more motivation for security researchers to spend several weeks working through from a theoretical vulnerability to a practicable exploit when there is potential revenue at the end of it. That alone is a reasonable explanation for the increase in reported vulnerabilities over the past few years - and since known holes can be fixed, that's not a bad thing. So I'd like to think that the outcome of this year's pwn2own is a Curate's Egg - good in parts. Half of the browsers and half of the mobile devices went unpwned. There's also a potential silver lining in the pwn2own failures: with Apple's software falling to attackers on both laptop and smartphone devices, perhaps those Apple users who are still in denial about the possibility of malware infections on their beloved MacBooks and iHardware will think again! (Shameless plug: if you don't yet have an anti-virus on your Mac, and pwn2own makes you think of getting one, don't forget that Sophos has a completely free home user version for Mac OS X.) http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2011/03/14/pwn2own-2011-results/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nakedsecurity+%28Naked+Security+-+Sophos%29 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... But buzzwords aside, understanding Steve Jobs' success requires breaking it down. Like this. By Bill Conaty and Ram Charan, contributors Apple's Steve Jobs If businesses managed their money as carelessly as they manage their people, most would be bankrupt. The great majority of companies that control their finances masterfully have no comparable processes for developing their leaders or even pinpointing which ones to develop. While they're disciplined and vigilant on the financial side, their efforts around recruiting, assessing, and developing leaders lack rigor. They depend on checklists of vague cliches such as "strategic," "innovative," "great communicator," "very bright," "analytic," or "intuitive" and settle for superficial impressions. Consequently their talent management remains hit-or-miss. These are the companies that wake up some morning suddenly realizing they need a new CEO but don't know where to start looking. More pervasively, by repeatedly putting the wrong people into the wrong jobs, they waste both human and financial capital when those people don't perform. Talent masters such as GE (GE), P&G, Hindustan Unilever, Novartis, and Agilent dig deeper to understand an individual's talents. They are keen observers of people, and they have discipline and expertise, honed over many years, to turn observation into verifiable fact. They develop intimacy with their leaders, meaning they understand each leader's unique combination of talents in specific terms. That arms them with the insight they need to make good decisions about where each leader will excel. An exercise in a course at Wharton's advanced management program exposes the futility of the buzzword descriptors many companies use. The instructor at a recent session asked the participants to explain Steve Jobs's distinguishing talent. Put aside his controversial personality and behaviors for the moment, the instructor advised. What we want to know is why he has beaten all expectations in his second act at Apple (AAPL). (Including his own; when Apple's market value overtook Microsoft's (MSFT) in June 2010, Jobs called the development "surreal.") In the dozen years since he reclaimed the failing company, he has turned it into a hard- driving, cash-generating machine. He doesn't just develop new products; he changes games. The iPod, iPhone, and iPad, along with iTunes, have created massive disruptions, forcing players in the music and telecom industries?among others?to change their business models. There's enough information available about the way Jobs thinks, behaves, and makes decisions that anyone who cared to could assess his real talent in several dimensions and describe it in clear language with specificity and nuance. Most people don't even try. When the instructor at Wharton asks participants the question about what Jobs's talent is, hands shoot up all over the room. He's creative, innovative, entrepreneurial; he's a master of communication; he breaks the paradigm, creates new businesses; he changes the game of other people. After a couple of minutes the instructor calls a halt. "You can't do it in buzzwords," he says. "To really define a person's talent, you need to express your full thought about a human being in whole sentences with nuances that are specific to that person. And you have to get the information by closely observing the person's actions, decisions, and patterns of behavior." He shows the way by asking some probing questions. "How is he creative?" Somebody replies, "He figures out what will be a great product." Okay, but how does he do that? "He interacts with consumers." Fine, but how does he interact with consumers? Somebody has read that he hangs out with young people. Another observes that he is always looking for upcoming technologies ahead of others. Still no cigar. The instructor next gives the executives information they can use to drill down and get to the real nature of Steve Jobs's talent. For starters, they hear a tale from one Apple director about the special board meeting held after Jobs accepted the post. Jobs walked up to the wall of the conference room where Apple's roughly two dozen current products were on display and began taking them down, one at a time. When he was done, only four were left. Those were the ones, he said, that would give Apple new life by differentiating it in the marketplace. The story provided two observable and verifiable facts about Jobs: he understands what appeals to customers, and he acts decisively. Now the instructor asks people to explain what the creation of the iPod reveals about his talent. The first replies from the group point to his grasp of technology. But the technology already existed, someone else notes -- other people were making MP3 players. The discussion that follows leads to a more meaningful conclusion: the success of the iPod was the result of a great insight coupled with brilliant execution. At the time, Napster had created an uproar in the market for recorded music with its file-sharing service that allowed users to swap downloaded MP3 files with each other. Napster's game was ultimately found illegal (it was essentially based on theft), but Jobs saw that the technology could create a legal market by ensuring the music industry a stream of revenues. And the market would be huge -- a new social phenomenon, in fact -- because it would liberate music lovers by enabling them to make their own buying choices legally and affordably, at any time, in any quantity. Then he created a product that was so easy to use and stylish that he could sell it at a high price, with fat margins. And we all know the rest of the story. By far the bestselling MP3 player ever, the iPod lifted the Apple brand to unprecedented heights, giving Mac sales a boost and re-establishing the company's reputation as a leader in innovation. Drilling further, the instructor brings out another important observable fact. Jobs spends almost all his time internally with roughly a hundred experts in software, hardware, design, and the technologies of metal, plastic, and glass. Every Monday morning he brings them together to review products and the challenges of designing and executing them. It's one of his social processes for connecting multiple disciplines to create compelling products, and he's been doing it rigorously for a dozen years. Four hours a week, fifty weeks a year, for twelve years equals 2,400 hours spent building mental and relationship capital by connecting the newest ideas of diverse brilliant and passionate minds. It's the kind of approach that turns an athletic team into an unsurpassed champion. Jobs is one of the few CEOs with such a disciplined practice of connecting the dots. Now the discussion gets rolling in earnest as the class begins piecing together the specific traits that define his genius. Somebody says, "So that's the real process of connecting with the customers, through his own mind and expertise." Somebody else raises her hand and says, "It's interesting that more than once he was able to identify an opportunity others didn't see." Another person: "It's more than that -- he creates opportunities, like the iPhone." Aha, the iPhone. What did he really do that has made it such a phenomenon? "He broke the paradigm." What does that mean? "He was able to figure out a new business model." Now eyes are lighting up. Until that point, the margins and brands of handset makers were controlled by the carriers. It not only won Apple the largest share of the smart-phone market but also generated new revenue streams enjoyed by no other phone maker. Jobs produced the most functional and elegant handset ever. Always tremendously protective of his brand and margins, he gave the iPhone to one carrier exclusively, AT&T (T). In exchange, Apple got the price it wanted and -- for the first time in telecom history -- a share of the carrier's revenue from the usage of a phone (supported by the higher rates users paid for their service). This was groundbreaking. Finally, it made money on the sale of its countless applications. Most of the new revenue streams flow straight to the bottom line, producing cash every day and making the iPhone Apple's biggest moneymaker. Jobs's verifiable action shows not only his business acumen but also the audacity and courage he exercised to reverse the power balance between a mighty carrier and a lowly handset supplier. Calibrating Steve Jobs What does deconstructing Jobs have to do with developing talent? Just this: the Wharton exercise mirrors on a small scale what talent masters do, which is to develop precision of observation, thought, and expression. Working with the instructor, the class wrapped up its exercise with this concise summary: Steve Jobs's natural talent is to imagine not only what consumers want now but also what they will want in the future -- and pay a premium price for. He searches for discontinuities in the external landscape. He figures out trajectories of new opportunities. Then he conceives and executes not only differentiated products that yield high margin and high brand recognition, but also business models that will exploit them most profitably. He views a product as an experience, not just an object. He can visualize what it will look and feel like, and can then execute it to near perfection. He makes advanced technology friendly to consumers based on his uncommon talent for connecting it to user experience. He has an innate feel for design, convenience, simplicity, and elegance in the product. He connects the best ideas from widely diverse disciplines to create the consumer experience he's striving for. He figures out precisely what problems need to be solved, however impossible they may seem, and searches for the best people to solve them, regardless of their status. He is a master of communications. He crafts simple messages that connect with audiences, leveraging his record of innovation to create buzz and build demand for a new product even before it is launched. He relates with consumers, employees, and partners, and turns them into rabid fans. He builds their trust in him, in Apple, and in the Apple brand. This is the kind of insight talent masters drive for, and knowing their people's core talents, they then search for jobs that are the right fit, creating a job if they have to. They do this repeatedly, passionately, even obsessively, day in, day out, not just once or twice a year. They make spotting and developing talent part of every leader's job, and they work hard at it. They spend a huge amount of time and energy on people because they understand a fundamental truth: It is people who ultimately deliver the numbers. If they miss the people part, it's just a matter of time before they'll miss the numbers. Excerpted from The Talent Masters by Bill Conaty and Ram Charan ? 2010 Ram Charan and Bill Conaty. A new project-based curriculum has engaged and motivated students, and college-going rates have risen dramatically. The inspiration In 2001, Dr. Patricia F. MacNeill, Assistant Superintendent of the Greene County School District, and other administrators took a hard look at student achievement levels and were not pleased. For example, one key measure of academic progress, the college-going rate, was only 26 percent. With a largely agrarian population, whose children would be looking at a much different economic future, Greene County knew it needed to change its education priorities and practices to better prepare its students. As they began to explore new models of teaching and learning, MacNeill and her team attended an Apple Leadership Institute, where they saw the impact the Mac could have in the classroom. They also visited several schools where computers had been integrated successfully into the curriculum. In 2002, they decided to put a Mac in the hands of every Greene County student in grades 6 through 12. The Mac gave Greene County teachers the means to introduce a more rigorous curriculum focused on interactive, project-based learning across all subjects. Rather than listening to lectures, making notes, and taking pencil-and-paper tests, now students learn by participating in interactive group research projects. After receiving a digital lesson from the teacher, student teams select a topic and use their Mac computers to plan, create, and present reports in a variety of formats, including content- and media-rich movies, podcasts, wikis, and blogs. And because iMovie, GarageBand, Keynote, Pages, and iChat are so easy to use, the students are able to work independently. Giving students more responsibility for their learning has made them more engaged and better prepared in the classroom. And their test results reflect improved learning. After introducing project-based learning in his middle school science classes, teacher Jos? Garcia saw his students achieve the highest scores possible in their end-of-year assessments. ?The Macs have transformed my classroom and transformed my students,? he says. ?The Macs are interwoven into our curriculum. There isn't a single day we don't use them.? ? Jos? Garcia, science teacher, Greene County Middle School The implementation Funding an ambitious technology project in a poor rural school district required a total community effort. MacNeill and other administrators met with teachers, Board of Education members, County Commissioners, and Apple representatives to make their case and explore options. Faced with perennial low student achievement and college attendance ? and the question of how those numbers might affect the future viability of the county ? the board and the commissioners were persuaded to fully support the proposed school reform. To implement the program, the district used a combination of funding sources, including reallocating money within their own budget. In social studies, for example, where information changes quickly, they opted for Internet-based research tools over buying new textbooks. They also applied for and won a substantial state grant. And to fund ongoing staff development, MacNeill used money from a widely available federal program for improving teacher quality. In June 2003, the school district purchased Mac computers for every student in grades 6 through 12 and one Apple MacBook Learning Lab per classroom for grades K through 5. After the computers arrived, Apple Professional Development facilitators provided three days of onsite staff training in iWork and iLife. Weekly professional staff development sessions allow teachers to continue to develop and share teaching and computer skills. Email and iChat promote similar collaboration among teachers, students, and parents ? many of whom had never touched a computer before. These interactions have also benefited the community: Greene County, where Internet availability had been low, now enjoys widely accessible Wi-Fi coverage. Handling IT for the program has been seamless. A central technology office is responsible for overall purchasing and yearly system upgrades, and a resident instructional technologist and literacy coordinator at each school make sure that the computers and applications run smoothly. Because Mac computers are so user-friendly and reliable, the teachers and students generally handle the day-to-day maintenance. The results Since the MacBook program began in 2003, the college-going rate in the Greene County School District has increased from 26 percent to 90 percent. Coviello, Jr. Like any large company, EMC experiences and successfully repels multiple cyber attacks on its IT infrastructure every day. Recently, our security systems identified an extremely sophisticated cyber attack in progress being mounted against RSA. We took a variety of aggressive measures against the threat to protect our business and our customers, including further hardening of our IT infrastructure. We also immediately began an extensive investigation of the attack and are working closely with the appropriate authorities. Our investigation has led us to believe that the attack is in the category of an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT). Our investigation also revealed that the attack resulted in certain information being extracted from RSA's systems. Some of that information is specifically related to RSA's SecurID two-factor authentication products. While at this time we are confident that the information extracted does not enable a successful direct attack on any of our RSA SecurID customers, this information could potentially be used to reduce the effectiveness of a current two-factor authentication implementation as part of a broader attack. We are very actively communicating this situation to RSA customers and providing immediate steps for them to take to strengthen their SecurID implementations. We have no evidence that customer security related to other RSA products has been similarly impacted. We are also confident that no other EMC products were impacted by this attack. It is important to note that we do not believe that either customer or employee personally identifiable information was compromised as a result of this incident. Our first priority is to ensure the security of our customers and their trust. We are committed to applying all necessary resources to give our SecurID customers the tools, processes and support they require to strengthen the security of their IT systems in the face of this incident. Our full support will include a range of RSA and EMC internal resources as well as close engagement with our partner ecosystems and our customers' relevant partners. We regret any inconvenience or concern that this attack on RSA may cause for customers, and we strongly urge you to follow the steps we've outlined in our SecurCare Online Note. APT threats are becoming a significant challenge for all large corporations, and it's a topic I have discussed publicly many times. As appropriate, we will share our experiences from these attacks with our customers, partners and the rest of the security vendor ecosystem and work in concert with these organizations to develop means to better protect all of us from these growing and ever more sophisticated forms of cyber security threat. In addition, the source was told that Apple will be supporting the existing version of MobileMe for the next year, suggesting that the new version will be quite different from the existing service; the extra year of support would likely cover those who recently paid for a full year of MobileMe, prior to Apple removing any method through which a user could pay for the service. Posted by Gustav on March 18, 2011 at 10:56 AM (PDT) 8 For those of you that are saying you like the paid accounts?really? What is Apple offering you that you can?t get for free somewhere else? Email? Cloud storage? Picture storage? Google does all of that for free, as do other services. The only advantage of MobileMe was the ?Find my iDevice? ?Remote Wipe? service, and it isn?t worth what you are paying for it. I?ll be glad to see the ?free? service and hope that is has at least as much as was offered to paying member before. Maybe there will be ?tiered accounts?, where you can buy additional services. That, to me, has the greatest value (well, that and cloud storage of my iTunes). Posted by Dave on March 18, 2011 at 11:28 AM (PDT) 9 @8- I am paying for a MobileMe Family Pack. I have been hoping that Apple would drop the fee to get on par with Google (and many other cloud service providers). But with that, I also do not want some big influx of ads. Many of the ?free? services do litter their product with ads. If Apple can stay ad free?I am all for it. However, I would certainly pay a minimal fee to be ad free. I guess I am looking more to a two tiered option. Free services that will most likely have less storage and iAds, or a paid (hopefully under $50/year) that offers a little more storage and NO iAds. Either way, I am glad Apple is conscious of this need to cater to those that are finding free alternatives. Posted by Mitch on March 18, 2011 at 12:25 PM (PDT) 10 Free Mobile Me seems like a good option to fight Google. Google?s subscription cloud of tight Android integration is a great attraction away from iOS. Ads don?t seem to be a major problem. I hardly notice them. MobileMe is far too expensive and a minority service to boot. Posted by MegaWoop on March 18, 2011 at 1:06 PM (PDT) 11 #8: There?s no such thing as ?free.? There is always a price. Google is a for-profit corporation, not a charity; one day, they will collect. And like #9 and others have said, having zero ads is worth more than zero dollars. Posted by Farnsworth on March 18, 2011 at 1:47 PM (PDT) 12 What do I lose going from paid service to free? Posted by Eric Schatz on March 18, 2011 at 2:12 PM (PDT) 13 I?m leery of free services, they have to generate revenue someplace. I like MobileMe and have the full meal deal, a family plan and max storage. My MobileMe bill is about $250/year for my family. I also pay for DropBox and Evernote. I hope they don?t go free, or at least totally free. They can afford to give some services away. I don?t free, I want more. I want more space, better calendar syncing, and more collaboration tools. I want top drawer services on my iPad. All these wants takes money and I don?t mind paying. I have an Android cell phone and I?m so sick of free. My phone if full of crapware and the ads are annoying. I?ve found little that is free that I want. If it?s good, I?ll pay for a premium version. Posted by Mark on March 18, 2011 at 4:00 PM (PDT) 14 I just want to keep my email address and syncing. I have no interest in adding another layer of software to the process of keeping my addressbook and calandars in sync. I have no interest _at all_ in having something like my iTunes library stored in the cloud. For one thing it is currently over 600Gb for another I like having all of my data stored locally, remote backups are fine but there is no way I will ever make my primary (much less my only) storage be online. What happens when you are in a place with no signal? Or what about when your internet service goes out for a day or two (or you move to a new place)? Are you going to sit in Starbucks all day using a public connection for everything? This whole move towards putting all of your data online is terrible, for one thing if you put everybit of your data in the hands of Google or Apple, or any other company what happens when they suddenly decide to charge you a huge fee to access it? Or maybe you end up with an internet provider who decides to block that company (after all it seems there will be no net neturality rules in the US anytime soon). Posted by theMikeSwan on March 18, 2011 at 4:02 PM (PDT) 15 If they would integrate iWork.com into the MobileMe site it would have a lot more appeal to me and provide a better alternative to Google Apps with an integrated desktop alternative that works better than Skydrive version from M/S. Posted by Harold on March 18, 2011 at 4:30 PM (PDT) 16 I?m also leery of a free MobileMe. It was free once, and it was called iTools. Despite Apple?s poor cloud reputation now, it was way ahead of its time. If you used a Mac, you got free iDisk, web hosting, email, etc. Despite being ?free for life,? Apple yanked the free accounts when they rebranded it as .Mac and started charging. I bounced between email services until I got an invite for Gmail beta, and I?ve been with them very since. This is a recent report on Apple 10.6.7 updates. Dave ============== http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2011/03/10/apple-issues-mammoth-security-update-for-safari-browser/ Apple issues mammoth security update for Safari browser Apple has released Safari 5.0.4 - the latest version of Apple's browser software for Windows and Mac users - patching an eye-watering 62 security vulnerabilities in the process. The vulnerabilities, described in an Apple knowledgebase article, were disclosed at the same time as a host of security holes in the iOS software used by the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch were also revealed by the company. What this means is, just like their iPhone/iPod touch/iPad-owning cousins, people who run Safari on their Mac or Windows computers would be wise to check out the latest available security updates as soon as possible. Apple doesn't like to assign severity levels to the security vulnerabilities found in its products, but the bugs in Safari look pretty critical to me. 57 of the 62 bugs can be exploited just by a user visiting a maliciously-crafted website. If that's not a reason to install a security update to your Safari browser, I'm not sure what is. You can download Safari 5.0.4 from Apple's website for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. SophosLabs see tens of thousands of legitimately websites that have been infected by malware every single day, so it's really important to keep your browser up-to-date with the latest security patches. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Updating your system You should back up your system before installation; you can use Time Machine. Do not interrupt the installation process once you have started to update your system. You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modi?cations installed, or if you've modi?ed the operating system through other means. Choose Software Update from the Apple (?) menu to check for the latest Apple software via the Internet, including this update. If your computer is not up-to-date, other software updates available for your computer may appear, which you should install. When Software Updates states "Your software is up to date," you can be sure that all available updates have been installed. Note that an update size may vary from computer-to-computer when installed using Software Update. Also, some updates must be installed prior to others, so you should run Software Update more than once to make sure you have all available updates. You can manually download the update installer. This is a useful option when you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once. These versions of the standalone installers are available from Apple Support Downloads. What's included? This update is recommended for all versions of Mac OS X v10.6 through 10.6.6 Snow Leopard, and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac; including fixes that: Improve the reliability of Back to My Mac. Resolve an issue when transferring files to certain SMB servers. Address various minor Mac App Store issues. Additional improvements Includes all the improvements in the previous Mac OS X v10.6.1, 10.6.2, 10.6.3, 10.6.4, 10.6.5, and 10.6.6 updates. Includes Safari 5.0.4. Includes RAW image compatibility for additional digital cameras. For information about the security content of this update, please visit article HT1222. Resolves a window resizing issue with X-Plane 9 on Macs with ATI graphics Addresses an issue with MacBook Air (Mid 2010) computers that could cause a kernel panic. Address issues in the AirPort driver for certain devices. Improves brightness on external displays and projectors. Addresses an issue where DVD Player may display black video on some Macs using the 64-bit kernel. Addresses an issue with some NEC displays in which the screen may appear black when connected to a Mac Pro (Mid 2010). Resolves an issue in which some Multiple Master (MM) fonts were missing from Mac Pro (Mid 2010), MacBook Pro (15-inch & 17-inch Mid 2010), and iMac (Mid 2010) computers. Addresses various issues with MacBook Air (Mid 2010) computer performance. Resolves an issue in which clicking the Updates tab in the Mac App Store could cause the Mac App Store to become unresponsive. Fixes a problem opening an afp:// URL that points to a file, and changes the AFP mount path to conform to previous Mac OS X releases. For details, see article HT4538. Includes the ability to repair certain issues that may prevent hardware RAID volumes from mounting. For more information, see article TS3631. Fixes a rare issue in Mac OS X v10.6.5 that could cause user accounts to disappear from the Login window and System Preferences after putting the system to sleep. Improves the reliability of dragging files or folders to the Trash when using an NFS home directory. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Joint Venture is a program designed to help you use Mac, iPhone, and iPad to improve the way your business runs. We?ll set up your new Apple products, train your employees to get the most out of them, and make sure everything stays working with dedicated support. We?ll set you up. The Apple Store will work with you from the beginning to make sure your new systems are up and ready to use, usually within 24 hours. We?ll transfer your existing data ? including your mail, calendar, and address book ? from your PC or Mac, and install any additional software you?ve purchased from the Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. We?ll also activate your Joint Venture website so you can easily access every Joint Venture service ? schedule training, book appointments, get tech support, and sign up for workshops. When everything?s set up and ready to go, we?ll take the time to show you and your staff around your new products, so you?ll be ready to hit the ground running. We?ll get you trained. Company training Schedule up to three two-hour sessions of training at the Apple Store for your employees. Our trainers will lead hands?on workshops on a wide variety of topics ? like getting started on a Mac, using iPhone and iPad for business, and creating compelling presentations with Keynote* ? and we?ll work with you to customize them for your company. Getting Started workshops These monthly group workshops are tailored to business professionals who are working with a Mac for the first time or need to brush up on the basics. So as you add employees throughout the year, we?ll show them everything they need. We also offer special workshops for your IT department and will help them build a plan for supporting Apple products in your business. We?ll keep you up and running. Dedicated support For the first time ever, you can speak to an Apple Genius over the phone. You?ll have unprecedented access to someone who can help fix your issue, check into necessary parts, and estimate repair turnaround time. We?ll even loan you a computer. If you prefer to meet in person, you can make a Genius Bar appointment at any Apple Store in the world ? we?re open early on weekdays so you can stop by on your way to the office. Anytime updates Your Apple products are designed to be reliable, secure, and easy to use, and we want to help them stay that way. So we?ll run system diagnostics, update software, and even clean your keyboard and display ? everything you need to make sure your equipment is helping you work at your full potential. Loaner program If you need a computer while we?re working on yours, we?ll loan you a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air ready to go with Mail, iCal, iWork, iLife, and Microsoft Office. So even if one of your machines is temporarily down, your business won?t be. Joint Venture website You?ll get your own website that lets you access every Joint Venture service from scheduling training to getting tech support and more. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Dave Sevick Apple Certified Support Professional Helping people use technology in Pittsburgh Western PA, WV, OH MD ... After a required viewing of the Tornado Boy video on the Post-Gazette web site and expressing our deep reverence for Pittsburghese, we set to work on our most recent delivery of donated Macs from Goodwill. There was not a lot of quantity, but much more quality. We refurbished nine Macs, including a PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 ghz and two nice G4 iMac flat panel models. Our all-time total is now 2,902. After Christina and Sophia each refurbished a slot-load CD G3 iMac, they each de-manufactured two tray-load CD G3 iMacs for recycling. We received 9 USB keyboards (one bluetooth), but only five had complete keys. We took in three mice, but two were the dreaded hockey-puck style. We must note the lack of communication from vacationing team members. Fitz and Charlie have been in Florida, and we haven't had so much as a iPhone snapshot from the beach. Even Erin, our faithful waitress at Cafe Davido, has gone to Italy, and unfaithfully, has send no postcard. To get back at them, I'll be going to a dentist appointment early next Friday, so we'll be gathering for our weekly work day about 10:30 a.m. next Friday, April 1. As it is April Fools Day, everyone attending is expected to have something to put over on Dave Sevick. This is also a test to see if he reads this email to the end. As usual, our parking is in the Goodwill lot across the street from our 2400 East Carson St. location. If you think you may want to join us some Friday, please send me your car make, color and license number so we can let Goodwill know you will be in the lot. Robert A. Message-ID: <7500DC2A-D6D0-43F9-9E4F-0916A69A98CD@mac.com> I have a problem that I am about ready to take drastic action to solve. Here is my problem: I have an iMac of about 16 months age. It is: Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac10,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 3 MB Memory: 4 GB Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz Boot ROM Version: IM101.00CC.B00 SMC Version (system): 1.53f13 I bought this and put my older iMac in another room. The older iMac (one of the early Core Duo devices) had an issue (indeterminate despite several interactions with the phone support and in store Geniuses) that made it lock up fairly frequently. Meaning, I got the spinny wheel that did not stop. So, when I got the new iMac (the machine I am using right now), I had the entire old iMac simply transferred to this new machine -- at the Shadyside Apple store. In essence, they put the old machine's image on the new machine. Then, I simply installed the OS on the old iMac from scratch -- which wiped it and then installed as though it were a n ew machine. Off we went. Funny enough, the old iMac now operates with not a bit of a problem -- no spinny wheels, no lock ups. The new one, however, has that problem, but increasingly, in spades. Really getting crazy. I have Time Machine on this new iMac and a Time Capsule. So .. I think that means everything I have that I have created -- files, photos, music, etc. -- is backed up (I just plugged in the Time Capsule and let it go to work -- no special settings). I am thinking that the solution to my lockup problem on the new machine is to wipe this machine by reinstalling the OS (and all the other stuff I use by way of software) from scratch -- just as I did on the old machine. But, that begs the question whether if I restage or reinstall, etc., I can do a "resote". Which leaves me with several concerns: I need to make sure that I have all the critical files: photos, the music, the "profiles" of the several iTunes users, and, hopefully, the documents/files the users have created. The things that I really , really care about are: the photos the purchased music The music for CDs I no longer have the Entourage emails from the mail application that my spouse uses (Entourage) rather than Mail Everything else, if I lost it, after a few tears, we'd move on with life. But the pix, the music and the emails are stuff I cannot lose. So ... if my task is to wipe this machine by reinstalling from scratch the OS in an effort to get rid of whatever defect is causing the freezes am I safe to reinstall the OS and then "restore"? Of, ... Would I be better off finding all the things I want to be sure to save and simply copying to a My Book (which I also have, but have not used) and then moving those things I put on the My Book back to the reconfigured iMac? I know that if I did the latter I would probably have to dig into some special "export/import" for the Entourage files to save and restore them. does this make sense? Any suggestions? Better ways to do this? Any things I ought to do (writing down stuff like passwords, etc.) before I reinstall the OS? Really REALLY appreciate any wisdom offered. Since I have already reinstalled an OS on a machine, that does not scare me. What does is the prospect of either losing files I can't lose or forgetting to find/write down/save the stuff I need. Seriously, I would appreciate any help -- including pointing me in the direction of help -- that can be offered. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Apple began accepting registrations at 8:30 a.m. eastern time on Monday, but by 6:30 p.m., the $1599 conference had completely sold out. That's more than seven times as fast as last year's sellout, which took just 8 days. The Cupertino, Calif., company announced on Monday that the event will run from June 6 through June 10 in San Francisco at the Moscone West center, which can accommodate roughly 5,000 attendees. "At this year?s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss." However, a number of corporate developers have reported missing out on this year's event, as the conference sold out faster than they could secure approval for funds and other preparations necessary to attend. Details of specific sessions have yet to be released, though Apple has reiterated its commitment to gaming by creating a Graphics, Media and Games technology track at the conference for the first time ever. Other tracks, which include Application Frameworks, Internet & Web, Developer Tools, and Core OS, are identical to last year's program. Given the so-called 'gold rush' of developers drawn to the iOS platforms and record sales of Macs and the recently launched Mac App Store, this year's WWDC has drawn unprecedented attention. The fact that WWDC took four weeks to sell out in 2009 and just 8 days in 2010 serves as evidence of the significant increase of developer interest in Apple. Although Apple has traditionally revealed an annual update to the iPhone at the conference, recent reports have suggested that the company will hold off on releasing a new device at the show, instead using the event to focus on software. One rumor had suggested that Apple would preview the next version of iOS at WWDC, instead of at a press event in the spring as in years past. According to the report, iOS 5, which will reportedly include substantial integration with cloud-based services, would not be available until this fall. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Periodically, I have a need to convert a "boat load" of old documents into editable text. The quality of these documents is not always scannable ... some are negative images from old methods of archiving. The turn around time to get them into an editable format is very small so I am hopeful that digital dictation will be a life saver for me! I am a horrific typist.
