Where it?s really at? The Apple TV. During his interview with Kara Swisher at All Thing Digital?s D9 Conference, Hastings downplayed the importance of the iPad and iPhone for streaming video companies like Netflix. ?Having a TV is the most important thing for video, as opposed to music, which works well on mobile,? Hastings said. ?In the coming years, we?ll be on a lot of web TV app stores.? But what about iPad, Swinger asked. Hastings? response: ?Meh. Tablets are not a revolution. The Apple TV is more important to us than the iPad. The big deal for us is Internet connected TVs.? While I love both Netflix and my iPad, I have to say, I think he?s right: while it?s nice to be able to watch video on my iPad, the form factor ? which requires me to actively hold the tablet upright ? just isn?t as satisfying as a big HDTV. I found these comments really interesting, because while we Apple fans tend to get all rubbery in the knees over the iPhone and iPad, there?s another, quieter revolution happening across America, where the Apple TV is changing the way millions of Americans use their television, with almost no one noticing. What do you think? Is Hastings right about streaming video on mobile devices? If so, what do you think that means for iCloud? The market value of Intel (INTC) stands at $115.21 billion. Microsoft?s Windows combined with Intel forms the portmanteau ?Wintel,? which refers to personal computers that, when they?re working, can most charitably be described as upside-down and backwards Macs with weak immune systems. So, add ?em both up and you find that the ?Wintel? is worth $316.8 billion. As you nmight imagine, we?ve been watching these values with anticipation for quite some time and today, for the first time (ever?), the closing value of Apple (AAPL) $317.60 billion exceeded that of Wintel. Just in time to make a nice slide for somebody?s WWDC keynote address (hint, hint). Longtime Mac users, gaze at the headline, let it wash over you, and bathe in some of the purest Schadenfreude ever concocted. We worked a split shift, so to speak, as Dave, John, Rich, Terry and John Crowe spent the morning setting up a Mac computer lab at the Beverly Jewel Wall Lovelace Children's Programs in McKees Rocks. It's a ComputeReach project using Macs purchased from our Goodwill rehabilitation efforts. Charlie saved two more of the eMacs that failed the boot test at the ComputeReach packing day, leaving only three that had to be de-manufactured. We de-manufactured several Macs in the morning until the Goodwill truck brought us fresh inventory after lunch. We jumped right in, and nearly finished them all. I'd tell you just how many, but yours truly forgot to bring the new supply of inventory tags from home, so we had to pile up the fixed Macs until we can tag them next week. We de-manufactured five Macs, and we probably refurbished another half dozen. I'll pass the totals along with next week's numbers. Will still stand at 2,973. We took in a half-dozen keyboards and four mice. All but one of the keyboards had malfunctioning keys, so they'll be come spare parts kits. We'll have another workday at 2400 East Carson St. on Pittsburgh's South Side next Friday, June 10. Parking is free in the Goodwill lot across the street. If you're planning on coming, and you're a first-time volunteer, please drop me a line with your vehicle's make, color and license number so we can put it on the list of authorized parkers. Although Apple discontinued new signups for MobileMe on Monday, iCloud syncing won?t be available until the fall, and most likely will only be available for those running iOS 5 and Lion (current MobileMe subscribers will, of course, still be able to use the service). What?s an Apple fan to do in the meantime? Go to a competitor. Crazy as it sounds, Google, Apple?s chief rival in the smartphone market, will be the one saving iOS users stuck in this donut hole. Moving to Google syncing requires only minor modifications to your iOS gadgets and your Mac, and you?ll be able to keep your contacts, calendars and email in step across devices. You?ll need to sync your iOS device to Google as well as sync your Mac to Google, and you should always backup the data on both before doing so. Note that doings so requires at least Leopard for Mac users. Google has excellent instructions on how to set up your iOS device with a Google account. You?ll need to set up the Google account first of course, but most people already have that. Note that other email addresses you happen to be using on your devices that aren?t tied to your Google account won?t have their data backed up. Setting up your Mac to sync with Google is also quite easy again due to excellent instructions, in particular on how to sync your calendars and how to sync your contacts. While you?re at it, you might consider moving from iCal to BusyCal, as BusyCal syncs simply with Google using only your login credentials, while syncing with iCal is a multi-step process. Google has a great opportunity to get users signed up in this window between Apple?s announcement and when its service goes live. Both Google and Apple will soon be battling for the right to store users? data, a much different fight than that going on between operating systems. Any advantage in that coming fight could be a significant one. Although it wont be out until this fall -- Apple isn't yet saying exactly when -- iOS 5 promises to deliver much-needed changes to the OS, which is used on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Apple told WWDC attendees that the new OS will have some 200 new features, though only 10 of them were showcased during Monday's two-hour keynote, which also < href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9217354/Jobs_unveils_free_iCloud_sync_storage_service">focused on iCloud and OS X 10.7 "Lion." Here are the five iOS 5-based changes I'm looking forward to most. New notifications Let's start with the crowd-pleaser: Apple has finally revamped the way iOS handles message notifications. This was long overdue. Until now, whenever a notification arrived, it popped up on the screen, forcing you to either view the message or close the notification window. The new method doesn't force you to stop whatever you're doing; the notification literally rotates into view in the form of an unobtrusive banner beneath the menu bar. Within seconds, the banner -- it displays the appropriate app icon and the message -- gently flips back out of view. If the notification requires immediate attention, tapping it automatically switches you to the app so you can respond. Don't worry if you liked the current style of modal notifications. They haven't been cut completely. In iOS 5 they'll still be an option when you configure your apps under Settings>Notifications. And they're still useful in certain situations. After all, not all notifications should be ignored -- like a reminder to take medicine. But I suspect most users will opt for the less intrusive banner, which is selected by default. If you want to retrieve any notifications you've ignored, you use Apple's new Notification Center, a completely original idea that no one has ever thought of. (That sound, by the way, was hundreds of Android fans' heads bursting.) I kid, of course; The notification screen isn't particularly original or new to anyone except iOS users who haven't modified their system software, but that doesn't make its inclusion any less welcome. Swiping your finger down from the top of the iPhone screen slides open the Notification Center, where all of your alerts are organized by app. (Apple also added in Stocks and Weather widgets.) You remove older notifications by hitting an X and then confirming that you want to make the app entries go away by tapping Clear. Making the new system more useful, customizations are available on a per-app basis in the Notification Settings area. You can sort notifications manually or by time, and you can edit the display order of the apps. One thing to keep in mind if you can't pull yourself away from certain apps: You can set the apps to display banner notifications and on the Lock Screen. That'll be handy, since you won't have to spend time unlocking the phone just to check notifications. Revamped Lock Screen The Lock Screen will get a few fairly useful updates in iOS 5. Double-tapping the Home button not only brings up audio options like before, but now it adds a Camera icon just to the right of the Swipe to Unlock slider. This gives quick access to the Camera app -- even when the iPhone is locked -- allowing you to record pictures and videos much faster than before. This means no more fumbling to unlock the phone, launch the Camera app and snap a picture. As a bonus, the volume up button doubles as a hardware shutter. (Somewhere, Windows Phone 7 fans are screaming with rage; this was on Microsoft's mobile devices first.) As a security measure, when an iPhone is locked with a passcode, access to the Camera app is still available -- but only to the Camera app. The ability to browse photos already taken -- or poke around on the phone further -- is restricted. The Notification Center is also part of the Lock Screen, and everything you may have missed displays on a darkly tinted layer over your Lock Screen picture. Depending on the options you choose, you'll see text messages show who messaged and what they said; phone calls and voicemails; and even emails with snippets of the messages. And every alert is time stamped. To quickly jump to any given app requiring your attention, slide the app icon for that particular notification and that's the app that opens when the iPhone is unlocked. It's a simple idea well implemented. It's amazing how effectively implemented features add up to a better iOS user experience without needless complexity. Cutting the cord A few months before WWDC, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that the post-PC era is beginning. Clearly, given Apple's recent burst of sales, he must have meant the "post-reliance-on-Microsoft era," especially since iOS devices don't work without first plugging them into a computer running iTunes. But Jobs was serious about the idea of standalone devices, and iOS 5 paves the way for a future in which devices like the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch serve as your sole computer. Out of the box, an iOS 5 device can be activated without plugging it into anything. After entering basic information like your Apple ID, you can then access every purchase you've made through iTunes (including the music, movie, and app stores) and download them as quickly as your connection allows. Not only is activation done wirelessly; so are iOS updates. Effectively, this eliminates iTunes as required middleware. There is, however, a benefit to plugging in an iOS device to iTunes: the automatic backup that happens before each sync. It's been a life-saver for me more times than I'd like to admit. Apple engineers have another option for iOS 5 users, though, and it's pretty simple. Since most users plug in their phone before bed to charge overnight, Apple is touting a system that allows the device to automatically back itself up to iTunes via Wi-Fi while charging. Once it's finished that, it'll sync iTunes content wirelessly. Having the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch serve as a standalone computers effectively opens the door for more sales. In some parts of the world, the iPhone hasn't caught on because of the necessary computer-linking; if you don't have a computer, you've got a problem. This should change that. Messages One surprise at WWDC was the introduction of the Messages app, which effectively replaces text/SMS/MMS messaging from one IOS device to another. Not only does Messages work across all of Apple's iOS 5 products, but it could save you money by bypassing a major revenue source for carriers (text and multimedia messages) using Apple-based, encrypted tech. iPhones have always been able to send and receive text messages, and, since the iOS 3 update, picture and movie messages, too. The problem with this is that carriers charge ridiculous rates for texting. Currently, AT&T sells separate messaging plans, and unlimited messaging is $30 a month. Well, if your family has iPhones and your friends have iPhones, you can use Messages on all of them and you don't pay a dime. There's no cost for sending text, images or movies -- as long as the messages are between two iOS devices. If the recipient isn't using an Apple device, the message (or file) is sent by standard SMS, which is then color-coded to green. iOS to iOS messages are blue and actually state "iMessages" at the top of the message and in an empty text entry field. But wait, there's more: the iMessages service syncs conversations between devices automatically, so you can start a conversation on the iPhone and pick it up later on an iPad if you want. There are other nice touches included, including group messaging, encrypted chat, read receipts, and the ability to link messages to more than one email address. If you and those you know send text/SMS/MMS messages to each other iOS devices, this is a sure-fire winner. AirPlay AirPlay is already a brilliant feature. As a matter of fact, it's what I used to watch the WWDC keynote after it was posted on the Apple site. From my couch, I browsed to Apple.com on the iPad, called up the Keynote movie, and beamed it to my entertainment system and big screen. But it's limited to streaming movies and audio, and even then, only in apps that support AirPlay streaming. But what about when you'd like to present an entire app and its contents? AirPlay in iOS 4 doesn't help, though Apple sells a $40 adapter that allows video mirroring on the iPad 2. As of iOS 5, AirPlay now mirrors the iPad directly with AirPlay Mirroring. To enable it, just double-tap the Home button, swipe right to call up the brightness/volume/rotation lock area, tap the AirPlay button -- the icon resembles a TV -- tap your destination device for the video and turn on mirroring when the option slides into view. This is not only useful for classroom, business presentations and group training sessions, but this leaves open the possibility for Apple to become a player in the living room gaming console wars. Oh, and one more thing The big news from WWDC was, of course, iCloud, which will play a major role in the success of iOS 5, and which analysts already say will help Apple fend off Google and Android. Apple's iCloud arrives at a time when people are surrounded by screens. There's a screen at home, a screen at work, a screen in your pocket, and not all of these devices talk to each other. Syncing and storage services like Drop Box and iDisk give users a central location to store docs online, but using those services requires actually being aware of them, and then manually copying over files for later retrieval. Apple engineers eyed data and the problem with keeping computers and devices up to date and in sync. The solution they came up with is a collection of services that syncs all data between your devices -- iPads, iPhones, iPods touch, and Windows PCs and Macs -- without ever doing anything. That's essentially what iCloud does. The ability to have up-to-date data across all devices, without worry or extra steps, is a huge deal. Some of Apple's apps provide similar functionality now; iBooks, for instance, syncs pages, bookmarks and notes across iOS apps, so no matter how you access the book you're reading, you're always where you left off. In iOS 5, Apple will bring that capability to every app. If you're editing a quick Keynote presentation on your iPhone in the taxi, you can pick up where you left off on the office Mac -- your presentation will already be there when you walk in. Game data will sync, too, so you can launch Angry Birds on the iPad and keep going on your iPhone. Every bit of data is synced with iCloud and pushed out to other devices, and it's all automatic. You don't think about it, or do anything; it just happens. There's 5GB of storage allocated for every iCloud user, but music, apps, books, Photo Stream photos (which automatically syncs photos across your devices) don't count toward the storage usage. Apple engineers have made past attempts to abstract the file system in the past, sometimes culminating in clumsy results (I'm looking at you, File Sharing to iOS devices in iTunes). It's no accident that the iPhone and iPad lack a user-accessible file system, and with iCloud, Apple may have found a way to justifiably resist adding file system access. Final thoughts iOS 5 brings about dozens of welcome changes that users at all experience levels will appreciate, and, most importantly, will actually use. Apple consistently shows that powerful new features don't necessarily mean added complexity; the updates that are coming with iOS 5 -- while not entirely original -- reiterate that fact. Almost as importantly, the changes solidify the role of iOS in the overall Apple ecosystem and the part iCloud will play in neatly tying together the plethora of devices people use every day. Fall can't get here fast enough. Yesterday, June 9, 2011 with the help of the team leader, Shenee Greenlee we set up 8 iMacs running Mac OS 9.2.2 on two tables in the rear classroom at their Fineview ( North Side of Pittsburgh) site. Like all previous installations, we'll continue to follow the progress of the teachers and students at these sites, providing them the training and support necessary to be successful. Shenee had her first training session yesterday. For those of you just tuning in, BJWL is a program of Family Resources , led by Dr. Rose Smiley from their offices in East Liberty. ComputeReach will be working on stocking each site with our recycled computers necessary, produced by Bob Donaldson and the Apple User Group recycling team at Goodwill each week ... hey .. they have a recycling day today at : 2400 Carson Street ! If you want to join us .... please come on over, we are there every Friday. Family Resources Educational Consultant Jean Schmalzried and I have been traveling to each site in advance assessing the proper classroom spaces and preparing the teachers for the deliveries. BJWL runs six days a week year round, with a modified summer schedule when school is not in session. These sites are located in subsidized housing neighborhoods and employ strong, committed teachers and caretakers. Many of the children, ages 5-18, count on these programs for safety, education and a meal each day. These programs allow the parents to work each day know their children are in safe and caring environment .... the way Beverly Jewel Wall Lovelace envisioned this in 1995 when this program began. Here is their history stemming back to 1986: http://www.familyresourcesofpa.org/ BJWL works on these core missions: Prevention of Child Abuse Providing Community Services Treating Families Advocating for Children Educating Parents ComputeReach is pleased to join Dr. Rose Smiley in one small part of these missions, educating the children. Councilwoman Kris Wong asked, "Do we get free wifi or something like that?" The audience laughed at her question, and Jobs responded with, "See, I'm a simpleton, and I've always had this view that we pay taxes and the city should do those things. That's why we pay taxes. Now, if we can get out of paying taxes, I'll be glad to put up wifi." She then joked that maybe the city could use its tax revenue to buy everyone an iPad, and then Apple would give them free wifi. Jobs then hinted that maybe he should just take Apple to Mountain View if she was unhappy. He added, "I think we bring a lot more than free wifi." It was a humorous, but awkward exchange, and Jay Bhatti, one of our regular contributors, decided to email the councilwoman. Some people on Twitter were mocking her, and saying her request was silly and representative of the problem with local government. He wanted to know why she did it. Wong wrote back with a nice note explaining that she and Jobs have joked about wifi in the past privately. She was mostly just tossing softballs at Jobs hoping he'd say nice things about Cupertino. Here's her response in full: Thanks for your email and taking the time to ask me about my question to Steve Jobs when he presented at the Cupertino City Council meeting the other night. I've had a chance to read through some of the public's comments, and I think if I provided some context to the situation and explain what I actually intended to ask, it might help clear up some of the confusion. As I'm sure you know, Apple and the City of Cupertino have enjoyed a fruitful, long-term relationship for quite awhile, and I've been lucky to have met Steve a number of times through his interactions with the city during my last 7 1/2 years of service on the council. It was just about 5 years ago when he first told us about Apple's intentions to build a new campus in Cupertino (http://goo.gl/4O0Kc), and only a couple months ago that Mayor Gilbert Wong and I spent time with him privately discussing the company's plans in further detail. So, to be clear, I am certainly well aware of the tremendous benefits that Apple provides to our city as the largest tax payer, and I have always expressed my enthusiasm for Apple to choose to remain in Cupertino (http://goo.gl/0alV1, http://goo.gl/hD4e3). My question about how residents can benefit from the new campus was primarily meant to be a softball question for Steve to talk more about Apple's long-term relationship with Cupertino and its residents. I was hoping he would talk not only about the fact that they are the city's largest tax payer, but also that Apple reciprocally enjoys calling Cupertino its home, as our city attracts phenomenally talented individuals and families with our vibrant and diverse community, safe neighborhoods, top-notch education districts, and extremely supportive business environment (as evidenced by numerous other tech companies that call Cupertino their home). Believe me, I know how much our residents benefit from having a $300B company in their backyard, but I was hoping to draw out more dialogue on Cupertino and Apple's mutually beneficial relationship. Steve, in his answer, joked about moving up to Mountain View - Google's hometown where they provide the residents there with free wifi. For some background context, I've joked with Steve in previous conversations (unrelated to Apple's new campus) about Apple doing the same for Cupertino. So, my follow-up was admittedly a flat attempt at going along with the same joke, and Steve replied the same way he did previously to me, which was he believes the city should provide those services. It was intended to be a joke and nothing more. Regarding the iPads - again, another flat follow-up joke that if Apple pays its taxes, Cupertino can use those taxes to buy people free iPads, but they would then need free wifi from Apple to use them, so a win-win for all. Again, it was a joke, and I obviously wasn't trying to ask Steve for free iPads for residents. A long-winded response, but hopefully it clears up some of the situation. English is my third language, so I can tell from watching the clip again how viewers might have misunderstood what I said. Thanks for taking the time to ask me about it. If you haven't seen it, here is Steve Jobs' pitch as well as the video of him talking to Cupertino's government. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Maggie is our newest keyboard tester. Today I remembered everything I was supposed to bring. This represents a pinnacle in my planning for the week. As punishment for forgetting the new inventory tags last week, I had to de-manufacture the G4 Quicksilver Tower with the mouse droppings inside. I stand humble before you... Coincidence brought to our attention that sometimes our tools aren't what we think they are. Charlie noticed a couple of the eMacs we did last week had incomplete data sheets attached, so he attempted to boot them with external hard drives to get the needed information from the System Profiler. After hooking up our two portable hard drives, neither eMac would boot. Of course they were perfect last week. He began troubleshooting, and after finally plugging them into yet another external hard drive had them to boot just fine. When I ran both portable hard drives through Disk Warrior, we found both were rife with directory corruption. Also by coincidence, we found out the power supply tester we've been using from my big bag o'stuff has failed at some point in the recent past. Charlie was troubleshooting possible bad power supplies in Mirror Drive Door G4 Towers, and a known working power supply he pulled from a bad logic board machine showed it was bad when connected to my tester. He rigged his bench to test power supplies with a working box and discovered every power supply we thought was bad, was, in fact, good. We hesitate to think how many power supplies have gone to recycling the past few months that were really working just fine. Once again, we've blown through all the inventory left us last week. Here's hoping there's a new batch of donated Macs to greet us next Friday. Counting last week's production this week due to our temporarily inventory tag shortage, we refurbished 13 Macs (7 last week, 6 this week), bringing our all-time total to 2,986 Macintoshes. We de-manufactured just three this week. Instead of my usual plea for USB keyboards and mice, I'll ask those of you who plan to upgrade to OS X.7 Lion in the coming months remember us when you try to figure out what to so with your old Mac OS X install disks. We'd dearly love to have Leopard disks for both PowerPC and Intel. Just today, we have an Intel iMac on the bench and have no way to boot it, at least until we configure an external hard drive with an Intel version of OS X. We'll have another workday at 2400 East Carson St. on Pittsburgh's South Side next Friday, June 17. Parking is free in the Goodwill lot across the street. If you're planning on coming, and you're a first-time volunteer, please drop me a line with your vehicle's make, color and license number so we can put it on the list of authorized parkers. Asymco blogger Horace Dediu crunched the numbers using data published by Apple at last week's Worldwide Developers Conference. Dediu assumes that Apple continues to run the stores at "just above break even." The company has said for years that the iTunes Store and App Store do not generate much profit, as most of the it is invested back into supporting the stores. According to Apple, the digital storefronts have reached 15 billion song downloads, 130 million book downloads and 14 billion app downloads. There are now 225 million iTunes accounts and 50 million Game Center accounts. The App Store offers 425,000 apps, including 90,000 apps developed specifically for the iPad. Dediu combined Apple's download estimates with the average price of songs and apps and the split between developers or music labels and Apple to arrive at his estimate. After adding together the content margin for songs and apps, Dediu estimates that operation costs reach approximately $113 million per month, from a total income of $313 million month. "Much of that cost does go into serving the content (traffic and payment processing). Some of it goes to curation and support. But it?s very likely that there is much left over to be invested in capacity increases," Dediu said. Apple's most significant investment toward capacity increases likely came in the form of a $500 million data center in Maiden, N.C. The company said this spring that the facility, which is nearly five times the size of its existing Newark facility, would support the iTunes and MobileMe services. Given that MobileMe is due to be phased out in June 2012, the server farm will support the just-announced iCloud service. iTunes has become the largest music and movie store in the world. In April, reports emerged that Apple had ordered 12 petabytes, or 12,000 terabytes, of additional storage for hosting video content on iTunes. ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Apple is no longer going to offer web hosting which always sucked anyways and was virtually unusable for all but the most basic sites. They added the functionality to publish via FTP so iWeb is not tied to MobileMe Apple is no longer selling iLife and iWork as suites so they no longer need to upgrade them together. Donaldson) Date: Fri, 17 Jun 2011 21:00:50 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] Goodwill CRC update, Friday, June 17, 2011 Message-ID: Dear Mac friends: Many thanks to Charlie Hutchens, John Hamill, Rich Fitzgibbon, Marty Swartz, Dave Sevick and new volunteer Sam Hughes for joining me today for our weekly workday at our Goodwill Computer Recycling Center "annex." Sam is recently seasonally-liberated from Mt. Lebanon High School. This morning brought a welcome delivery of new Mac inventory from Goodwill. Judging by what we received, it would appear there's an upgrade cycle going on; four of the donations were easily-refurbished G5 models. In the past two months, we've refurbished five G5 Towers after seeing just a couple in the previous year. We also took in a pair of Apple ADC flat-panel displays, including a 23-inch model. Our pace with the lower volume of donated Macs is much more deliberate. We now have more time to devote to each Mac, and try to get them just right. We also have time to test components as never before. Charlie Hutchens was able to test and label more than two dozen video cards we've harvested from de-manufactured PowerMac towers. Rich Fitzgibbon completed the task of trying to combine parts from two G4 iMacs to make one working one. After spending time over three sessions comparing parts and looking a take-apart lists, he got it together to find the screen was flawed when it successfully booted. Back to square one... Next week, Charlie will take on the task of transplanting a processor card from a dead Mirror Drive Door Power Mac to one with a missing processor. This was a task we simply didn't have the time to do in the past, and cases like this just piled up along the wall. We refurbished eight Macs, six of them Leopard-capable, and de-manufactured just two. Our all-time total is now 2,993. We took in four keyboards and four mice today. These numbers just aren't getting any better. To those of you who plan to upgrade to OS X.7 Lion in the coming months, please remember us when you try to figure out what to so with your old Mac OS X install disks. We'd dearly love to have Leopard disks for both PowerPC and Intel. We'll have another workday at 2400 East Carson St. on Pittsburgh's South Side next Friday, June 24. Parking is free in the Goodwill lot across the street. If you're planning on coming, and you're a first-time volunteer, please drop me a line with your vehicle's make, color and license number so we can put it on the list of authorized parkers. Hope to see you there! Robert A. June 19, 2011 update Message-ID: <1F76FA48-050A-4D37-9411-3E7E0C007D5F@computereach.com> Dear NPMUG folks, Many of our readers have offered to possibly drive out to tornado-ravaged Joplin, Missouri to help with a certain mission trip we are organizing to help recover that community. You'll recall that their youth mission team of the Joplin First United Methodist Church had a routine summer urban outreach project here in Pittsburgh last summer. See this video: http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2011/06/01/volunteers-from-pittsburgh-headed-to-tornado-ravaged-joplin/ Unfortunately the infrastructure of that town is completely down and slow to get back in order .... ... and all the other towns within hundreds of miles of Joplin are overwhelmed with no hotel vacancies that they have issued a very FIRM request that people hold off coming until FEMA, the Red Cross and multiple other organizations are set to take on more human help. Help they will need soon ... just not yet. So these last couple of weeks we have been trying to couple the Oklahoma computer project for the Arapaho and Cherokee Nations with the Joplin recovery effort. And this just will not work at this time. In the meantime, we will be working in several towns all over Oklahoma installing iMac computers from ComputeReach. If you would like to be a part of this effort, please contact me via email or a phone call. The Oklahoma project will take place July 18-21. Oklahoma is an 18 hour drive from Pittsburgh ... so we have opted to take a discount flight instead and found funding to support "FedEx Freight" in shipping two 16-computer pallets = 32 computers. We had a "caravan plan" in the works with large group of folks showing an interest in driving to Joplin and on to Oklahoma. We've scrapped that plan ... Just Oklahoma computers now. Stay tuned for more information on the Joplin mission as they become available in the next few weeks. Today we ran out of Macs to refurbish easily. All that remain are eMacs needing new capacitors, G5 Macs, both Towers and iMacs, with a myriad of ills not easily dealt with, and a bunch of white G3 iBooks in a state of near destruction. Charlie Hutchens reclaimed a Mirror Drive Door G4 Tower from the dead with a successful processor transplant, but lost another trying the same surgery. Sam Hughes had his first experience in dealing with a Power Mac sporting an Other World Computing replacement processor, which is now in our inventory of Macs ready for sale. We refurbished six Macs, and de-manufactured six others. Our all-time total is now 2,999. An auspicious number, indeed. No new stuff today, so again no keyboards or mice. For those of you who plan to upgrade to OS X.7 Lion in the coming months, please remember us when you try to figure out what to so with your old Mac OS X install disks. We'd dearly love to have Leopard disks for both PowerPC and Intel. Goodwill has just one Mac in the donation area as of late Friday. If this situation continues into next week, we'll declare a holiday for next Friday, July 1. I'll post a note on the list to update everyone early next week. Robert A. Using the RAIDs with a Thunderbolt equipped Mac, though, requires a rather expensive $50 cable that is only available from Apple. We dug into the design of the cable to find out why Apple felt justified in charging $50 for some plastic-wrapped copper wire, and why Thunderbolt may have a hard time gaining traction outside of the higher-end storage and video device market?a fate similar to Apple's FireWire. Promise's RAIDs do not come supplied with a Thunderbolt cable. Instead, users are directed to buy a Thunderbolt cable directly from Apple, which costs $49 for two-meter length. We contacted Promise to find out why a Mini DisplayPort cable could not be used in its stead, since the Thunderbolt port is based on Mini DisplayPort. A support technician told Ars that Apple's cable is a "smart" cable that "has firmware in it." Intel confirmed that Thunderbolt requires specific Thunderbolt cables. "Only Thunderbolt cables can be used to connect Thunderbolt products using Thunderbolt connectors," Intel spokesperson Dave Salvator told Ars. "The cables have been designed for the 10Gbps signaling as well as power delivery that are part of Thunderbolt technology." Active cabling required Apple didn't respond to our requests for further information about the "firmware in the cable," but an EETimes article from earlier this year noted that in addition to having different electrical characteristics from Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt also uses active cabling to achieve full duplex 10Gbps transmission. A source within the telecom industry explained to Ars that active cables are commonly used at data rates above 5Gbps. These cables contain tiny chips at either end that are calibrated to the attenuation and dispersion properties of the wire between them. Compensating for these properties "greatly improves the signal-to-noise ratio" for high-bandwidth data transmission. Our friends at iFixit made a trip to a local Apple Store to find out what hardware powers Apple's Thunderbolt cable. CEO Kyle Wiens told Ars that Apple's cable contains two Gennum GN2033 Thunderbolt Transceiver chips to facilitate Thunderbolt's blazing speed. Each Apple Thunderbolt cable includes a Gennum GN2033 Thunderbolt Transceiver inside the plug at each end. iFixit "Unlike ordinary passive cables that can be used at lower data rates, the unprecedented speed of the new Thunderbolt technology places unique demands on the physical transmission media," according to Gennum's website. "The GN2033 provides the sophisticated signal boosting and detection functions required to transfer high-speed data without errors across inexpensive Thunderbolt copper cables." Our telecom source noted that Intel made an unusual choice in also using active cabling for future optical-based iterations of Thunderbolt. Passive cabling is more common, but active cabling could offer some advantages. For one, active cables could combine fiber optics with electrical cabling for power transmission. Another good reason to use active optical cables, according to our source, "is that your current electrical ports can be forward compatible with future optical cables." So far, though, Apple is the only supplier for Thunderbolt cables. Though Gennum is already highlighting its Thunderbolt transceiver chips, Intel would not say when official specs would be released to other manufacturers, or when other suppliers might be able to offer compatible cabling. FireWire II: Thunderbolt Boogaloo? The unfortunate side affect of all this is that if you are interested in using Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals?including RAIDs, hard drives, and video I/O devices coming soon?you'll have to buy a $50 cable from Apple for each device. Without additional suppliers, that could lead to trouble in gaining wider adoption for the standard in the industry. The situation is not unlike the one that plagued FireWire in its early days. Designed by Apple and featured on its own computers, the original FireWire 400 standard offered significant speed improvements over USB 1.1, could supply more power to peripherals, and used an architecture that allowed any FireWire device to communicate with another, making it possible to forgo the need to connect both devices to a host computer. Despite these benefits, FireWire cost more to implement on a device because it required a separate controller chip in each device. And though Apple turned over the FireWire standard to standards body IEEE, the company originally required additional licensing fees to use the FireWire trademark and logo. This made USB a more attractive, less expensive alternative for device makers. Apple later relaxed the licensing fees, but an alternate 4-pin, non-powered version of FireWire?dubbed "IEEE 1394" and branded as "i.Link" by Sony?had already begun to gain wide adoption. USB 2.0 improved speeds to be more competitive with FireWire 400, while retaining its cost advantage. A faster FireWire 800 standard emerged, but used an entirely new 9-pin connector that required adapters to use with 6-pin FireWire 400 devices or 4-pin IEEE 1394 devices. The combination of non-compatible plugs and added cost meant that FireWire ended up being largely confined to high-speed storage and the burgeoning digital video and digital audio industries. As mentioned previously, the devices featuring Thunderbolt that have been announced so far include a variety of high-performance storage and mobile video I/O devices. Thunderbolt's high bandwidth and low latency are perfect for these applications. But Thunderbolt's high cost in terms of the necessary controllers and relatively expensive active cabling could limit its expansion to the broader market. Furthermore, Intel only mentioned two vendors aside from Apple who were considering adopting Thunderbolt when it announced the technology earlier this year: HP and Sony. HP ultimately decided it wouldn't be adopting Thunderbolt in its computers any time soon. Sony has announced a new Vaio Z laptop that incorporates Thunderbolt controllers from Intel, but uses a proprietary optical connection via a specially modified USB3 port. That port can connect to a special discrete GPU-equipped docking station that won't be compatible with standard Thunderbolt peripherals. Thunderbolt may be capable of some impressive speeds, but Apple and Intel run the risk of the technology quickly becoming a dead end if Apple remains the only vendor for Thunderbolt-equipped computers as well as Thunderbolt cables. Greater third-party support will be the key to the broad market adoption needed to support Thunderbolt in the years to come. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The company is planning to launch a brand new product line based on a brand new operating system within the next 12 months, and even though the first device born out of RIM?s new QNX OS was impressive in some ways, it was incomplete. There still is a chance for RIM to deliver some really interesting competitive products, but time is quickly running out, as we have written time and time again. The thing is, RIM has always been a company controlled by two people ? Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis. For all the things that have worked, they have missed the boat countless times and we?re now seeing the results. We have received an open letter to Mike and Jim from a high-level RIM employee (whose identity we have verified), and in an amazingly honest and passionate plea, this letter gives fascinating insights into what RIM must fix, and fast. RIM did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Read the open letter in its entirety after the break. P.S. If you?re an employee of RIM and want to send us your thoughts and feelings on the company, you can send them to us via email or leave a comment below. ? To the RIM Senior Management Team: I have lost confidence. While I hide it at work, my passion has been sapped. I know I am not alone ? the sentiment is widespread and it includes people within your own teams. Mike and Jim, please take the time to really absorb and digest the content of this letter because it reflects the feeling across a huge percentage of your employee base. You have many smart employees, many that have great ideas for the future, but unfortunately the culture at RIM does not allow us to speak openly without having to worry about the career-limiting effects. Before I get into the meat of the matter, I will say I am not part of a large group of bitter employees wishing to embarrass us. Rather, I believe these points need to be heard and I desperately want RIM to regain its position as a successful industry leader. Our carriers, distributors, alliance partners, enterprise customers, and our loyal end users all want the same thing? for BlackBerry to once again be leading the pack. We are in the middle of major ?transition? and things have never been more chaotic. Almost every project is falling further and further behind schedule at a time when we absolutely must deliver great, solid products on time. We urge you to make bold decisions about our organisational structure, about our culture and most importantly our products. While we anxiously wait to see the details of the streamlining plan, here are some suggestions: 1) Focus on the End User experience Let?s obsess about what is best for the end user. We often make product decisions based on strategic alignment, partner requests or even legal advice ? the end user doesn?t care. We simply have to admit that Apple is nailing this and it is one of the reasons they have people lining up overnight at stores around the world, and products sold out for months. These people aren?t hypnotized zombies, they simply love beautifully designed products that are user centric and work how they are supposed to work. Android has a major weakness ? it will always lack the simplicity and elegance that comes with end-to-end device software, middleware and hardware control. We really have a great opportunity to build something new and ?uniquely BlackBerry? with the QNX platform. Let?s start an internal innovation revival with teams focused on what users will love instead of chasing ?feature parity? and feature differentiation for no good reason (Adobe Flash being a major example). When was the last time we pushed out a significant new experience or feature that wasn?t already on other platforms? Rather than constantly mocking iPhone and Android, we should encourage key decision makers across the board to use these products as their primary device for a week or so at a time ? yes, on Exchange! This way we can understand why our users are switching and get inspiration as to how we can build our next-gen products even better! It?s incomprehensible that our top software engineers and executives aren?t using or deeply familiar with our competitor?s products. 2) Recruit Senior SW Leaders & enable decision-making I?m going to say what everyone is thinking? We need some heavy hitters at RIM when it comes to software management. Teams still aren?t talking together properly, no one is making or can make critical decisions, all the while everyone is working crazy hours and still far behind. We are demotivated. Just look at who our major competitors are: Apple, Google & Microsoft. These are three of the biggest and most talented software companies on the planet. Then take a look at our software leadership teams in terms of what they have delivered and their past experience prior to RIM? It says everything. 3) Cut projects to the bone. There is a serious need to consolidate our focus to just a handful of projects. Period. We need to be disciplined here. We can?t afford any more initiatives based on carrier requests to squeeze out slightly more volume. Again, back to point #1, focus on the end users. They are the ones making both consumer & enterprise purchase decisions. Strategy is often in the things you decide not to do. On that note, we simply must stop shipping incomplete products that aren?t ready for the end user. It is hurting our brand tremendously. It takes guts to not allow a product to launch that may be 90% ready with a quarter end in sight, but it will pay off in the long term. Look at Apple in 1997 for tips here. I really want you to watch this video because it has never been more relevant. It is our friend Steve Jobs in 97 and it may as well be you speaking to RIM employees and partners today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LEXae1j6EY 4) Developers, not Carriers can now make or break us We urgently need to invest like we never have before in becoming developer friendly. The return will be worth every cent. There is no polite way to say this, but it?s true ? BlackBerry smartphone apps suck. Even PlayBook, with all its glorious power, looks like a Fisher Price toy with its Adobe AIR/Flash apps. Developing for BlackBerry is painful, and despite what you?ve been told, things haven?t really changed that much since Jamie Murai?s letter. Our SDK / development platform is like a rundown 1990?s Ford Explorer. Then there?s Apple, which has a shiny new BMW M3? just such a pleasure to drive. Developers want and need quality tools. If we create great tools, we will see great work. Offer shit tools and we shouldn?t be surprised when we see shit apps. The truth is, no one in RIM dares to tell management how bad our tools still are. Even our closest dev partners do their best to say it politely, but they will never bite the hand that feeds them. The solution? Recruit serious talent, buy SDK/API specialist companies, throw a truckload of money at it? Let?s do whatever it takes, and quickly! 5) Need for serious marketing punch to create end user desire 25 million iPad users don?t care that it doesn?t have Flash or true multitasking, so why make that a focus in our campaigns? I?ll answer that for you: it?s because that?s all that differentiates our products and its lazy marketing. I?ve never seen someone buy product B because it has something product A doesn?t have. People buy product B because they want and lust after product B. Also an important note regarding our marketing: a product?s technical superiority does not equal desire, and therefore sales? How many Linux laptops are getting sold? How did Betamax go? My mother wants an iPad and iPhone because it is simple and appeals to her. Powerful multitasking doesn?t. BlackBerry Messenger has been our standout, yet we wasted our marketing on strange stories from a barber shop to a horse wrangler. I promise you, this did nothing to help us in the mind of the average consumer. We need an inventive and engaging campaign that focuses on what we are about. People buy into a brand / product not just because of features, but because of what it stands for and what it delivers to them. People don?t buy ?what you do,? people buy ?why you do it.? Take 3 minutes to watch the this video starting from the 2min mark: http://youtu.be/qp0HIF3SfI4 6) No Accountability ? Canadians are too nice RIM has a lot of people who underperform but still stay in their roles. No one is accountable. Where is the guy responsible for the 9530 software? Still with us, still running some important software initiative. We will never achieve excellence with this culture. Just because someone may have been a loyal RIM employee for 7 years, it doesn?t mean they are the best Manager / Director / VP for that role. It?s time to change the culture to deliver or move on and get out. We have far too many people in critical roles that fit this description. I can hear the cheers of my fellow employees now. 7) The press and analysts are pissing you off. Don?t snap. Now is the time for humility with a dash of paranoia. The public?s questions about dual-CEOs are warranted. The partnership is not broken, but on the ground level, it is not efficient. Maybe we need our Eric Schmidt reign period. Yes, four years ago we beat Microsoft when everyone said Windows Mobile with Direct Push in Exchange would kill us. It didn?t? in fact we grew stronger. However, overconfidence clouds good decision-making. We missed not boldly reacting to the threat of iPhone when we saw it in January over four years ago. We laughed and said they are trying to put a computer on a phone, that it won?t work. We should have made the QNX-like transition then. We are now 3-4 years too late. That is the painful truth? it was a major strategic oversight and we know who is responsible. Jim, in referring to our current transition recently said: ?No other technology company other than Apple has successfully transitioned their platform. It?s almost never done, and it?s way harder than you realize. This transition is where tech companies go to die.? To avoid this death, perhaps it is time to seriously consider a new, fresh thinking, experienced CEO. There is no shame in no longer being a CEO. Mike, you could focus on innovation. Jim, you could focus on our carriers/customers? They are our lifeblood. 8) Democratise. Engage and interact with your employees ? please! Reach out to all employees asking them on how we can make RIM better. Encourage input from ground-level teams?without repercussions?to seek out honest feedback and really absorb it. Lastly, we?re all reading the news and many are extremely nervous, especially when we see people get fired. We need an injection of confidence: share your strategy and ask us for support. The headhunters have already started circling and we are at risk of losing our best people. Now would be a great time to internally re-brand and re-energize the workplace. For example, rename the company to just ?BlackBerry? to signify our new focus on one QNX product line. We should also address issues surrounding making RIM an enjoyable workplace. Some of our offices feel like Soviet-era government workplaces. The timing is perfect to seriously evaluate at our position and make these major changes. We can do it!
