Now we can do just 1. I have gently asked multiple times in writing and over the phone with the Sophos folks to make the Sophos AV for Mac/PC product more affordable by not "forcing" users to buy three licenses at a time as the cheapest deal. "How about just one license at a time ..." was the answer on every feedback questionnaire or conversation when asked how Sophos support can be better. So consider this a repost to the NPMUG listserve :-) Since you are new ... we ask that you respond only to the user of an email ( NOT REPLY TO ALL ) and keep your WordPress conversations and discovery private as "not to chat" publicly. Then you can perhaps later post your WordPress solution on our listserve and give credit to the helpful folks who took time to write back to you ... This keeps the volume of messages low. Hope that helps ... and I am posting this message to the list so they too can see the process of how to post and respond. Oh, and welcome to the NPMUG listserve ! The reason why the threat, which is sometimes being referred to as "Boonana", has been getting so much attention is that it doesn't just infect Windows, but targets Mac OS X and Linux computers too. This incarnation of the Koobface worm appears to have been spread via Facebook in messages asking "is this you in this video". IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ. Hi . Is this you in this video here : Clicking on the link takes you to an external website that displays an image of a woman (grabbed from the Hot Or Not website). Visitors to the webpage who want to see more are prompted to give permission for an applet called JPhotoAlbum.class to be run from inside a Java Archive (JAR) called JNANA.TSA. Whether you are running Windows, Mac OS X or Linux on your computer, if you give permission for the highly obfuscated Java app to run then the malware will sneakily download a variety of programs from the internet which it will then execute on your computer. Files which can be downloaded include: applet_hosts.txt cplibs.zip jnana_12.0.tsa jnana.pix OSXDriverUpdates.tar pax_wintl.crc pax_wintl.zip rawpct.crc rawpct.zip rvwop.crc rvwop.zip VfxdSys.zip WinStart.zip Sophos detects various components of the attack as Troj/KoobStrt-A, Troj/KoobInst-A, Troj/KoobCls-A, Troj/Agent-PDY, Troj/DwnLdr-IOX, and Troj/DwnLdr-IOY. In addition, Sophos's web protection blocks access to the malicious webpages. Don't forget to always be careful about what links you click on, even if they appear to have been shared by someone you know on Facebook. And if you're a user of Linux or Mac OS X, don't think that the malware problem only exists on Windows. Malicious hackers are becoming increasingly interested in targeting other platforms, and if users of your operating system have a reputation for being dismissive about the risk of malware on your preferred OS, the bad guys may consider you a soft target. Finally, if you're a Facebook user, you could do a lot worse than join the 30,000+ other people who have become members of the Sophos Facebook community, sharing advice and warnings about new threats. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... History: 1985 PABUG (Pittsburgh Apple Business Group) meetings in Pittsburgh began and were held monthly. Led by Frank Wyman. 1991 COWMUG (County of Westmoreland Mac Users Group) meetings Monroeville began. Led by Peter Carras. 1996 NPMUG (North Pittsburgh Mac User Group) meetings began at the Northland Public Library in McCandless. Led by Dave Sevick. 1999 NPMUG switches meetings to MacOutfitters of Cranberry Twp. Led by Dave Sevick. 2004 NPMUG meetings are also held at Apple Shadyside. Led by Jeff Szuhay and Dave Sevick. 2005 NPMUG meetings are also held at Apple South Hills Village. Led by Charles Firth. 2010 NPMUG meetings are also held at Apple Ross Park. Led by Dave Sevick and the Apple Business Team. ======= New for 2011 2011 NPMUG meetings will now be held on demand of new products several times a month ... but only if quick listserve informal polling shows an interest .... Example: Microsoft Office 2011 ..... how many users would like to see a demo? The number of responses would reflect enough interest to stage a demo at one of the Apple Stores or Mac Outfitters. And announcement would be posted and meeting held to meet the demand. Motivation: Steve Jobs moved away from MacWorld trade shows to a more on-demand model when new products are launched and more often than twice a year. Costs are less and time is more efficiently used. Excitement and interest level is much higher. So look for any one of our Apple Stores or Apple Consultants to approach this list to poll for interest in new Mac products. The NPMUG listserve continues to be used daily and will go on without any changes ... but please note the new structure of meetings at any one of the many Apple sites. Thanks and I appreciate any feedback on demos you would like to see. Dave ====== P.S. COWMUG meetings are great and you should consider going! Next one is this Thursday Nov 4 in Murrysville. This is a reminder that the COWMUG meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 4, will be held from 7 to 9 pm in the conference room of the Murrysville Community Library, located at 4130 Sardis Road, Murrysville 15668. Today's highlight was Dave bringing in Krispy Kreme's. In the immortal words of Homer J. Simpson, "Mmmmmmmm, d-o-u-g-h-n-u-t-s....." Today's lowlight was wiping Krispy Kreme smears off the Mac cases.... But the big news is the date for our move two blocks down East Carson St. is set. Unfortunately, it's next week, November 12. Needless to say, we will need all the help we can get, so please think of us if you happen to have that day free. If you can, give me a heads up if you plan to come; email and phone is below. If you don't, I'll tell Dave, and he'll call you. Personally. He has ALL your numbers.... Today was a low output day as we began to disassemble our workspace in earnest after lunch. Our workbench network is disconnected, and a bunch of small items are in boxes. There's a lot yet to do, and we're waiting to hear about Goodwill's truck availability next Friday. We refurbished five Macs and de-manufactured 12 more. Our all-time total is now 2,770. If you're a trivia fan, the last Mac to be refurbished at the 2600 East Carson St. location was a venerable 233 mhz iMac in classic Bondi Blue. Charlie Hutchens did the honors, bumping up the hard drive to 10 gb and RAM to 160 mb. He did not autograph the inside of the case.... This week's donation take had NO keyboards or mice. But there are two relatively rare Blue-and-White flat panel Apple Displays (the first model), but only one power supply. Collectors: Call our people. Let's do lunch... A gentle reminder the ComputerWorks store is now open in its temporary quarters in Goodwill's retail store at 2700 East Carson St., just a block from the former location on Pittsburgh's South Side. It's a bit smaller that the previous store, but they still carry everything they used to display, you just may have to ask for it if you don't see it. There are many G4 Towers and eMacs in storage. When you enter the store, turn right and head for the back of the store. There's at least one G5 iMac fresh from the Marty Swartz home laboratory... We will have another workday, entirely devoted to moving, next Friday, November 12. We hope to see you there! Pretty please? Robert A. (Still buying more then my other entertainment combined, but less then I did previously) The iTunes store and iPod killed my CD-buying completely (and I mean completely) - but the iPad has only reduced my book purchases. Partially, because eBooks don't yet have everything on offer that physical books do (in terms of the catalog of titles), but also because a physical book is still sweet technology - it does exactly what you need it to do - present the text in an easy-to-read format, is compact, no batteries required, and (with paperbacks) malleable. Where physical books have suffered for me is during travel - where weight becomes an issue. When you read as much as I do, taking "a book" on a 2-3 day trip (or even on a busy transit single-day trip) isn't an option. You need several books. And that's a lot heavier then my iPad, which can hold hundreds of books. But the iPad battery isn't indefinite, so if i'm not sure about power, a physical book (or two) tends to tag along. And for some reason, I'm perfectly happy to read a physical book in bed before sleeping, but have no desire to do so with the iPad. The book is still a valid technology - and isn't going to go anywhere. It's stable, compatible with all known text and image systems, all languages, has a killer battery life, is sharable, editable, and comes in numerous form factors. The iPad (or Kindle) does avoid some issues with the Book technology (weight, water damage, tearing, spine breaking, etc) but comes with it's own issues the Book doesn't have, notably battery life and sharing/editing issues. Message-ID: <1469F1EF-B8DC-45EA-AA67-665374A52AD4@mac.com> Dear Mac friends: Here's a quick update on our planned activity for the beginning of our move from Goodwill's 2600 East Carson St. building to our new quarters at 2400 East Carson St. This Friday's activities will be similar to you cleaning out your garage. ? We will be placing all of our "stuff" into Goodwill blue plastic bins (with wheels). We have some boxes already packed, and we will have postal bins to loosely organize the rest for easy packing of the bins. ? We'll be dismantling our work benches and shelving. The components of our server rack will be disconnected and removed. ? We'll be organizing our stock of refurbished and yet-to-be refurbished Macs so they can be easily transported to the proper location. The yet-to-be refurbished Macs will go to our new place; the finished ones, well, we're still figuring that one out... Goodwill will assemble all of this into one of their trucks, and deliver it to the new location early next week. We will begin to form our new workspace on Friday, Nov. 19. The bottom line is we won't be doing any heavy lifting or riding herd on palates to load and unload them on a truck. Those of us with concerns of backs and extremity issues can now breathe deeply. Many thanks to those of you who have already told me you can be there. If you think you can make it, just drop me an email. Robert A. I finally found a work-around to custom sorting photos on an iPad. I read many forums, tried some software, and many, many permutations but to no avail. The solution surprisingly was in iPhoto '09. I imported the files into iPhoto (which I never use), batch changed the dates with 10 seconds added to each image file (a choice on the dialogue box), then synced with my iPad. It maintained the custom sort order. I later exported the new iPhoto files into a folder on my hard drive where I usually sync my iPad from. The custom sort order remained. I use Lightroom and tried to change the time stamp but it didn't work there or with Aperture either. Please note that the time changes shouldn't be made on your master image files. Today's move to our new location at 2400 East Carson St. went far more smoothly that anyone had anticipated. Goodwill had begun to move benchwork and boxes we had already packed, and they were already in the truck when we got there this morning. A blitz of disconnecting our server, cleaning shelves and packing wheeled blue bins was done before noon. If you emailed after 8:30 this morning, we didn't get it... We ran two convoys of bins two blocks down Carson St. and unpacked them in the new space. By the time we returned to our old space, it had been cleaned and washed. It was like we had never been there... After lunch, we re-assembled our plastic shelving as Dave setup and reconnected our server and wireless network. Goodwill will deliver the remainder of our stuff, including the benchwork, on Monday. We'll spend our workday next Friday setting up the benches and putting stuff back on the shelves. The really big news is the internet service. Dave measured 25 megs down and 5 megs up. Full-time Netflix has been suggested, but that would be wrong... Our new space is at least six times what it was in the 2600 building. At lunch, we realized we can put in a dance floor but couldn't decide where the orchestra should be. We may need an intercom system to talk to each other. Oh, and the background noise is nonexistent. There's a Goodwill parking lot directly across the street where our volunteers can park during our Friday workdays. If you'd like to park in this lot at no charge, please sent me your make and color of car and your license plate number for me to pass along to Goodwill. They monitor the lot to make sure only approved parkers are using it. I need to sent this list to Goodwill at the close of business on Wednesday. Another change is our regular workday will be shorter. We now share a building with Goodwill's Elderberry Junction Adult Day Care, and we will enter the building using the same door at the adult day care. The door is open and unlocked until 9:00 a.m., but after 9:00 you have to be admitted through a locked door. Just press the buzzer on the right side of the inside door. We will leave promptly at 3:00 p.m. as the day care closes and building goes into alarm lock. Charlie Hutchens and I will continue to arrive about 8:30 a.m. We will have another workday next Friday, November 19. The new address is 2400 East Carson St. The parking lot is directly across the street next to the CoGo's convenience store. We hope to see you there! Robert A. The room is at least 4 times larger than the space we have been using at 2600 Carson Street. It is a freshly carpeted, QUIET atmosphere, amply lighted, internet ready, free parking, private space just for us Mac folks. We hope to migrate with all the Goodwill folks over to the new campus in Lawrenceville between 51st and 52nd streets .... hopefully in the 1st Quarter of 2011. I would like to extend a big THANKS to the administration at Goodwill of Southwestern PA for accommodating all our Apple volunteers. We hope to see you next Friday Nov 19. There is a ton of work to do rebuilding benches and organizing all moved items. We are significantly less crammed. Thanks again. This was a very good day at Goodwill. I have to admit it's getting better. It's just another day. I could go on ... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/11/16/apple_itunes_beatles_rumour/ Apple readies iTunes for Beatles juice, says report Apple is making an announcement about its iTunes music service later today, which has led to frenzied speculation about what fanbois can expect to hear from the Jobsian outfit. Chief among the rumours is that the company will finally be releasing the Beatles? back catalogue via its iTunes store, which we are quite sure we rightly channelled through Yoko Ono via the wonders of Twitter just yesterday. It?s hardly surprising to see the Beatles-on-iTunes claim rise again, given that it?s a timeless classic in the world of tech reporting. Ever since Apple birthed iTunes, the service has been bereft of the Fab Four, in part due to a long-running trademark battle between the Steve Jobs-run firm and the Beatles' old record label Apple. That was finally settled in 2007, since when rumours have continuously circulated suggesting that the band?s music will finally hit iTunes. But it hasn?t happened ? yet. Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple?s iTunes store will indeed begin flogging Beatles? tunes at some point in the near future. The newspaper cites ?people familiar with the situation?, and said a deal was supposedly agreed just last week between Apple and EMI Group Ltd, which is the Beatles current record label. Neither company have confirmed that such a meeting took place, and the WSJ warned that the agreement might not stick. Then cut to Apple?s teaser on its website?s homepage yesterday about an iTunes announcement today ?that is just another day. That you?ll never forget? and, well, you get the picture. However, the Beatles iTunes hype isn?t the only rumour doing the rounds today. There have been suggestions that Apple is about to unveil a new cloud-based service, or that it could start streaming music, even though the company doesn?t have a licensing deal in place. Even Lord Alan ?You?re Fired? Sugar has been speculating on Twitter about Apple?s announcement. ?Beatles now agreed their music to go on iTUNES maybe has something to do with the 50 year copyright running out on some of the songs,? he sagely pondered. Who knows or even really cares? Either way, check back later when we?ll have the official word on what?s hit iTunes. ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition was launched on November 2nd, and proved instantly popular. At its peak we were seeing one download almost every second (to be precise, 3032 an hour at the craziest point!). It's also made the list of top products downloaded on the Apple site, and is listed as the most popular download in their Networking & Security section. What we've also been trying to determine, is a list of the most commonly encountered malware that these Mac users are seeing: The above top 20 chart shows the percentage of malware reports by users of our Mac product. There are some interesting entries in there. Firstly, we should deal with the one that's top of the list. As The Register describes, Mal/ASDFDldr-A is how Sophos detects malicious files that use the scripting capability of Microsoft Media Player to force your web browser to visit an infected site instead of playing the video you were hoping for. Normally the infected media files are blank (no music, no video) but they are distributed posing as music from Lady Gaga, ABBA, Madonna, etc.. They are several megabytes in size due to null padding. So there's definitely nothing to lose and everything to gain by erasing them. You'll also notice a lot of Java-based attacks in the list, these are obviously cross-platform and may have been found in internet caches by users who were hit by a drive-by attack. Many of these might have been designed to download further Windows-based attacks to computers, but they could easily be adapted to download Mac-based threats too. You'll also see some Mac OS X-specific malware in there (OSX/Jahlav and DNS Changer). These are well known Mac Trojans that are typically disguised by hackers on BitTorrent sites, or planted on websites as alluring downloads or plugins to view videos. It's also interesting to see the infamous Conficker worm edging its way into the top 20 chart in 19th place. Conficker, of course, cannot infect Macs but it does spread via USB drives - so I imagine that Mac users are encountering this when Windows users share an infected thumb drive with them. That's a good opportunity for Mac users to feel good about themselves - even if they couldn't have been infected by Conficker they can feel a bit smug that their Mac anti-virus was able to show up an insecure Windows user. :) Aside from these stats, we've received a fair amount of anecdotal evidence that Mac users who have never scanned their drives before with an anti-virus are finding suspicious files. For instance, here's a message from Graham Lee who was at a Mac User Group meeting, and tweeted the following last night: @iamleeg Graham Lee Someone in my MUG just found their Mac is infected with RSPlug.A using the free Sophos product. Stop saying it doesn't happen. /cc @gcluley about 17 hours ago via webRetweet (Full disclosure: Graham used to work at Sophos) We don't see as much Mac malware as Windows malware. Not by a long shot. But that doesn't mean that Mac users can afford to have their head in the sand about about protecting their precious computers. And, unfortunately, so long as Mac users don't properly defend themselves they will increasingly be perceived as a soft target by cybercriminals. If you still need some convincing, check out some of the videos of Mac malware caught in action that we've posted in the past. The sign on the door says "Elderberry Junction," a senior daycare operated by Goodwill. The door from the lobby is unlocked until 9:00 a.m., but afterwords you have to ring the buzzer in the lobby to be admitted to enter. Go through the the daycare's front room and enter the double wood door on the opposite wall. This will bring you to our palatial new digs. The new location also brings shorter hours. Charlie and I will be there about 8:30 a.m., but we now have to be gone, no exceptions, by 3:00 p.m. The daycare closes and the building's alarms kick in. There is now free parking in a Goodwill-owned lot directly across the street. Look for the colorful murals painted on the side of the adjoining building. We really must come up with a proper name for our new digs... We are settling into our new space at 2400 East Carson St. quite nicely, thank you. The blissful silence is sometimes unsettling. So unsettling, in fact, that we were able to note the fans on the G5 Xserve were NOT running. Alas, the power supply failed, and a replacement is on order. The PowerPC-based G5 Xserve is a key element in being able to do multiple-machine imaging and the secret of our productivity. Without it, we'd have to image each Mac we refurbish one-by-one. All of our benchwork and shelving is in place, and we've mostly moved things to where we can kind of find things. After lunch, we carted three bins with nearly 30 Macs from storage at the 2700 building along Carson St. to our new space. We have more, but they can wait a bit longer. We've arranged our benchwork, most of which has been in storage since we moved to the South Side, in an arrangement we think will enhance work flow with dedicated spaces for de-manufacturing, RAM testing, regular refurbishing, and long-term projects. The new parking arrangements in the Goodwill lot across the street are really sweet. If you think you may want to join us some Friday, please send me your car make, color and license number so we can let Goodwill know you will be in the lot. Next Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is a regular day off for Goodwill, and our building will be closed. So we get a day off... Our next workday will be Friday, December 3. Our new hours are any time after 8:30 a.m., and we must be done by 3:00 p.m. We traditionally take the rest of December off, so we'll probably devote our time on December 3 to getting everything ready to roll in the new year, and moving inventory from 2700 to the new space. We hope to see you on December 3... Robert A. It's clearly an emotive subject, with strongly held views on both sides. To help some of the discussions, here's a brief overview of some of the malware we have seen infecting Apple computers. From the early 1980s, right up until the present day, here are some of the highlights in the history of Apple Mac malware. Mac virus timeline 1982 The first virus to affect Apple computers wasn't written for the Macintosh (that iconic computer wasn't set to appear until 1984) but is of historic interest none the less. In 1982, 15-year-old student Rich Skrenta wrote the Elk Cloner virus, capable of infecting the boot sector of Apple II computers. On every 50th boot the Elk Cloner virus would display a short poem: Elk Cloner: The program with a personality It will get on all your disks It will infiltrate your chips Yes, it's Cloner! It will stick to you like glue It will modify RAM too Send in the Cloner! What may surprise some Apple fans is that the Elk Cloner boot sector virus predates IBM PC viruses by some years. 1987 The nVIR virus began to infect Macs, spreading mainly by floppy disk. Source code was later made available, causing a rash of variants. 1988 HyperCard viruses emerged that could run on versions of Apple's Mac OS 9. One version showed the message "Dukakis for President" before self-destructing. 1990 The MDEF virus (aka Garfield) emerged, infecting application and system files on the Mac. 1995 Microsoft accidentally shipped the first ever Word macro virus, Concept, on CD ROM. It infected both Macs and PCs. Thousands of macro viruses followed, many affecting Microsoft Office for Mac. 1996 Laroux, the first Excel virus, was released. Mac users were unaffected by this new strain of macro virus until the release of Excel 98 for Mac meant they could become victims. 1998 Sevendust, also known as 666, infected applications on Apple Mac computers. 2004 The Renepo script worm attempted to disable Mac OS X security, downloaded hacking tools to affected computers, and gave criminals admin rights to the Apple Macintosh. Hackers also wrote a proof-of-concept program called Amphimix which demonstrated how executable code could be disguised as an MP3 music file on an Apple Mac. 2006 Leap-A, the first ever virus for Mac OS X was discovered. Leap-A can spread via iChat. The Inqtana worm and proof-of-concept virus soon followed. A buggy proof-of-concept virus called Macarena appeared, written in Xcode. Every infected file contained the phrases "MachoMan - roy g biv" and "26/10/06" 2007 Sophos discovered an OpenOffice multi-platform macro worm capable of running on Windows, Linux and Mac computers. The BadBunny worm dropped Ruby script viruses on Mac OS X systems, and displayed an indecent JPEG image of a man wearing a rabbit costume. The first financial malware for Mac was discovered. The gang behind the attacks developed both Windows and Mac versions of their OSX/RSPlug-A Trojan horse. The Trojan posed as a codec to help users view pornographic videos, but in fact changes DNS server entries to direct surfers unwittingly to other websites. 2008 Cybercriminals targeted Mac and PC users in equal measure, by planting poisoned adverts on TV-related websites. If accessed via an Apple Mac, surfers would be attacked by a piece of Macintosh scareware called MacSweeper. In June, the OSX/Hovdy-A Trojan horse was discovered that could steal passwords from Mac OS X users, open the firewall to give access to hackers, and disable security settings. Troj/RKOSX-A was discovered - a Mac OS X tool to assist hackers create backdoor Trojans, which can give them access and control over your Apple Mac computer. In November, Sophos warned of the Jahlav Trojan. Like in other malware campaigns, cybercriminals created a bogus webpage claiming to contain a video. Visiting the site produces a message saying that you don't have the correct codec installed to watch the video - whereupon the site offers you an EXE if you run Windows, and a DMG (Disk Image) file if you are using an Apple Mac. Controversially, Apple issued a support advisory urging customers to run anti-virus software - but after media interest, rapidly deleted the page from their website. 2009 In January 2009, hackers began to distribute the OSX/iWorkS-A Trojan horse via BitTorrent inside pirated versions of Apple's iWork '09 software suite. In the same month, a new variant of the Trojan was distributed in a pirated version of Adobe Photoshop CS4. In March, Sophos reported on how hackers were planting versions of the RSPlug Trojan horse on websites, posing as an HDTV program called MacCinema. In June, SophosLabs discovered a new version of the Tored email worm for Mac OS X, and hackers planted a version of the Jahlav Mac Trojan horse on a website posing as a portal for hardcore porn videos. Shortly afterwards, the Twitter account of celebrity blogger Guy Kawasaki had a malicious link posted onto it, claiming to point to a sex video of Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester. In reality, however, the link lead unsuspecting users to malware which could infect Mac users. Meanwhile, Apple finally began to introduce some rudimentary anti-malware protection into Mac OS X. Although it wasn't really equivalent to a true anti-virus product (it only protected against a handful of Mac malware, doesn't defend you if you try to copy an infected file from a USB stick for instance, and doesn't offer clean-up facilities), it was still encouraging to see some attempt to offer more protection for Mac users. 2010 The OSX/Pinhead Trojan (also known as HellRTS) emerged. The backdoor Trojan horse can allow hackers to gain remote control over your treasured iMac or MacBook. Once again, the malware was distributed disguised as a legitimate application - in this case, iPhoto, the photo application which ships on modern Macs. More recently, the Boonana cross-platform worm appeared, using a Java applet to target not just Windows computers for infection, but Mac OS X and Linux too. Sophos detects various components of the attack as Troj/Boonana-A, Troj/KoobStrt-A, Troj/KoobInst-A, Troj/KoobCls-A, Troj/Agent-PDY, Troj/DwnLdr-IOX, and Troj/DwnLdr-IOY. In addition, Sophos's web protection blocks access to the malicious webpages. Also in 2010, Sophos issued a free home user version of its anti-virus for Macs. We have been protecting business customers who have Macs for years, and now there was a chance for home Mac users to protect themselves against the threat too. Early reports indicate that there are plenty of Mac users with malware on their computers - some of it is Windows malware, some Mac OS X, and some cross-platform. There's no doubt that the Windows malware problem is much larger than the Mac threat - but that doesn't mean that the danger of malware infection on Mac OS X is non-existent. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Unlike many of the recent high profile disclosures, Cannon made an effort to work with Google and simply make the public aware of the bug and what they might do to protect themselves. Cannon contacted the Android security team last Friday and they responded to him within 20 minutes. That's the start of what can make security work. Another success? Android's security model of sandboxing applications by default limits the damage that can be done by the flaw Cannon discovered. Baking security into the recipe from the start is clearly an advantage for the Android platform. Now for the #fail. Android, like Windows Mobile, is largely designed to be an open platform. What do I mean by this? All carriers and manufacturers of handsets are encouraged and able to use the operating system and adapt it to just about any form factor they can imagine. HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Acer and others each can make interesting, innovative devices and customize the operating system to meet their needs. This sounds like a good thing, right? It is awesome if you are a consumer and want the maximum amount of choice and flexibility. The problem comes in when you have to patch or maintain the software that drives these devices when they only have the most basic components in common. This is the security nightmare that Android is beginning to face. Every device on every carrier has a slightly unique configuration that requires that phone's manufacturer and carrier to update its software independent of what Google may have provided. Many applications are embedded into the operating system itself like the browser, contact manager and calendar. This means you must upgrade the OS to patch any flaws discovered in these programs. Currently this is the fatal flaw in Android's security model. Older devices like the HTC Dream (G1) are only able to run version 1.6 because of memory limitations. New browser flaws like the one Cannon disclosed cannot be fixed for these devices under the current updating schema. Google has developed a fix for this flaw and has stated they will fix it in a maintenance release for the upcoming Gingerbread (2.3) release. That's great, but means even the most modern of devices will be exposed to attack for a month or more and older Android phones may be vulnerable in perpetuity. Apple and RIM do not face these types of issues because they have a limited selection of hardware shipping and provide OS updates only for devices they manufacture. What can you do if you are an Android user? For now the only option is to choose 3rd party applications that are updated through the Android Market instead of using the embedded applications. Android Market provides an auto-update mechanism that is independent of the operating system and offers common alternatives for browsing such as Opera Mobile. Firefox 4 portable is also currently available in beta form and will be able to be updated independent of Android OS. Until/if the details of Cannon's discovery become public it is impossible to say whether other Android browsers are susceptible to the bug he discovered, but one thing is for sure. . . The default Android browser certainly is. I don't know if it is today or what but the activation fee is being waived and that wasn't happening the other day when I checked. So, there was zero cost to start up, I got the 5GB $50/month. If you are in the market this might be a good time to go for it. I also checked out the link (below in Gene's email) for the signal booster. It is on sale today through Monday I assume (says black friday and cyber monday). CuZinBruce Bruce: Replies: --------------------------------------------------- Dave Sevick has this. Also, if you buy an iPad AT A VERIZON STORE, you can get one of these at a steep discount. They sell the iPad and MiFi for the same price at an iPad + 3G. AND, they offer cheaper data plans for the MiFi + iPad combo, as little at 1 gb. The advantage with this is the MiFi can also tether to your laptop... I understand the iPad MiFi plans are not as seamless with the Verizon bureaucracy as the AT&T 3G plans. Robert A. Patrick Cranston ------------------------------------------------ Residence is Independence Township (near the airport) - Aliquippa mailing address. Because of our location Verizon MiFi was the only game in town. Speeds up & down vary with time of day. (I guess it's really the demand on the 3G towers.) It's head & shoulders above dial up which was our only alternative. On a "good" day we can get 1.5 download, uploads no where that. Pros: It's broadband but not too fast. It's portable - It can go where you go & as long as you have Verizon 3G coverage, you have internet service. Supports up to 5 wireless devices. (I've had 4 computers using it simultaneously - slows considerably, but it's usable.) I do a large amount of surfin' & the largest usage was 4.5 GB. (Verizon has a site that lets you track usage.) Cons: Expensive - we're charged $59.95/month with a 5 GB cap. Can't really use it for large files 'cause you bump up against the cap quickly. (Don't do video or large photo files uploads.) Downloading videos ie: YouTube takes a long time & there's considerable "stuttering." Caveats: Lotsa rumors of Verizon 4G MiFi. Present 3G devices won't be able to use it - according to my reading of blogs. Bought a Wilson Sleek http://3gstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=443_300&products_id=1981. signal booster. It helps considerably & can also be used with just about any cell phone to improve reception. The 3G store has the MiFi available for purchase without a contract. I'd do it again but it's hard on the wallet. Gene O! No matter. So do I, yet this is the most gripping news feature I?ve read this week, to the point where I started mentally storyboarding the inevitable Hollywood spy movie that?s going to be made about it before I was halfway through. Starring Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg as leaders of an elite team of pasty beta-male hackers, overseeing the cyberwarfare equivalent of the Manhattan Project. Title: ?The Nerds Who Saved the World.? Kidding aside, take five minutes to read it all. Nothing else that I?ve come across better explains how fantastically ingenious Stuxnet is as a precision weapon aimed at disabling Iran?s nuclear program. For instance, tech-dummy that I am, I thought the worm was originally introduced to Iran?s enrichment facility by smuggling it into the plant via a secret agent and injecting it into the system via a flash drive. Not so: Sounds like it was first injected into computers outside the plant that were being accessed by people who worked inside, e.g., some nuclear technician?s laptop or desktop. If the technician carelessly used his own flash drive on the outside computer, he?d inadvertently transfer Stuxnet to it and then carry it into the building with him, thus avoiding the need for someone to physically infiltrate Natanz. So not only did they devise a plan to virtually bomb the facility from the inside, they likely got one of Iran?s own people to unwittingly deliver the payload. Very clever, but that?s just the beginning: ?Once allowed entry, the worm contained four ?Zero Day? elements in its first target, the Windows 7 operating system that controlled the overall operation of the plant. Zero Day elements are rare and extremely valuable vulnerabilities in a computer system that can be exploited only once. Two of the vulnerabilities were known, but the other two had never been discovered. Experts say no hacker would waste Zero Days in that manner. ?After penetrating the Windows 7 operating system, the code then targeted the ?frequency converters? that ran the centrifuges. To do that it used specifications from the manufacturers of the converters. One was Vacon, a Finnish Company, and the other Fararo Paya, an Iranian company. What surprises experts at this step is that the Iranian company was so secret that not even the IAEA knew about it. -The worm also knew that the complex control system that ran the centrifuges was built by Siemens, the German manufacturer, and ? remarkably ? how that system worked as well and how to mask its activities from it? ?The worm was designed not to destroy the plants but to make them ineffective. By changing the rotation speeds [of the centrifuges], the bearings quickly wear out and the equipment has to be replaced and repaired. The speed changes also impact the quality of the uranium processed in the centrifuges creating technical problems that make the plant ineffective,? he explained. Thus, not only did the coders need a mind-boggling degree of knowledge about the vulnerabilities in more than one software platform, they needed intelligence on Iran?s program so deep that not even the UN had all the details. On top of all that, the worm was programmed to disguise what it was doing so that the engineers on the premises would think the problem with the centrifuges was in the hardware, not the software. No wonder that paranoia at Iran?s nuclear facilities is now allegedly such that the regime?s counterintelligence agents are making life a ?living hell? for the nuclear scientists who work there. But whodunnit? Microsoft claims that it would have taken 10,000 days of labor to put Stuxnet together, which means a huge group ? so huge, in fact, that Fox?s sources speculate it involved an international collaboration between at least the U.S., Russia(!), and Germany, which would have had detailed knowledge about the coding that runs the Siemens machinery that powers the centrifuges at Natanz. The Guardian?s report on Stuxnet claims that the group could have been much smaller, just five to 10 people working for six months. But they?ve also got a reason to think the Germans are involved: Stuxnet works by exploiting previously unknown security holes in Microsoft?s Windows operating system. It then seeks out a component called Simatic WinCC, manufactured by Siemens, which controls critical factory operations. The malware even uses a stolen cryptographic key belonging to the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer RealTek to validate itself in high-security factory systems? Clulely told that Guardian that Siemens has ?astonishingly? advised power plants and manufacturing facilities not to change the default password that allows access to functions, despite it being exploited by Stuxnet and being ?public knowledge on the web for years?. I can?t imagine why they?d do that unless Siemens itself is part of this or is under heavy pressure from the German government to cooperate. Another thing I can?t figure out is why Stuxnet, in Fox?s words, was ?designed to allow the Iranian program to continue but never succeed, and never to know why.? In that regard, despite its success in slowing down Iran?s nuclear program, it?s a spectacular failure: The Iranians obviously do know now why the centrifuges are failing, and even though it?ll allegedly take another year to cleanse Stuxnet from their systems, they?ll get there and start rolling again. Which leaves three possibilities: (a) The programmers weren?t quite as brilliant in disguising the worm as they were in developing other aspects of it; (b) the programmers wanted the worm to be uncovered eventually, either for propaganda reasons or because it?s a necessary step towards unleashing some even murkier, more brilliant plot; or (c) the programmers knew the worm would be discovered in time but also knew that it would do all the damage it was capable of before then. If that?s true, then maybe the centrifuges at Natanz are in much worse shape than anyone (except the programmers) knows. Exit question: Was it worth it? Watch this clip before answering. Smallpox is an impressive weapon too, but there are good reasons why we don?t use it. And I don?t just mean the moral ones. ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "Then there's Apple." "Never before has this venerable company, which at age 34 is a grizzled veteran by Silicon Valley standards, stood so firmly atop the high-tech industry. Earlier this year, Apple's market capitalization surpassed that of Microsoft, making it the most valuable property in the tech universe. And during its just-completed fiscal year, it broke four consecutive quarterly revenue and profit records," Boudreau reports. "Amid the worst recession in decades, Apple hired thousands while others cut jobs." "But what most distinguishes Apple is the way it has climbed these heights," Boudreau reports. "While other tech titans spent 2010 cutting costs and acquiring new technology through mergers, this $65 billion company is innovating like a startup... Its iPhone revolutionized the market for smartphones, the must-have product of the decade. Its iPad is now creating consumer electronics' most promising new market, for tablet computers." Boudreau reports, "The pace of hiring accelerated during the company's fiscal 2010, which ended Sept. 25. Over the preceding four quarters, it added 12,300 employees, raising its number of full-time workers to 46,600, a 36 percent jump. In the same period, Apple's R&D spending soared 38 percent and it opened 44 new retail stores, ending the year with a total of 317 outlets... During its just-completed fourth quarter, Apple reported a 27 percent jump in the number of Macintosh computers it sold -- out-sprinting the PC industry, which recorded a 7.6 percent increase globally. The soaring popularity of its desktops and laptops is tied to what analysts call the "halo" effect -- people fall in love with another Apple product, such as the iPhone, then fall in love with its computers."
