And an official launch date has not be set by Apple as of yet. Please visit the iPad site and do take time to watch the 1.5 hour Keynote by Steve Jobs. http://www.apple.com/ipad/ Image Capture - We spent the most time demonstrating the little known, yet uber-cool app called Image Capture. Over USB connections we had a Canon Digital Elph camera, iPhone, and Canon scanner all working seamlessly .... we used the "shared" devices tool to enable users on the same wireless network in the store to see and share each others digital files .... like Bob Donaldson's Nikon camera ! We played with this for nearly an hour ..... Then we had to leave :-) We finished the night by saying good bye to 20636 Route 19 North Perry Highway .... and enjoyed a nightcap at Primanti Brothers watching the Sabres vs. Pens ! But this preview clip in which he demonstrates his new voice for the first time (created by a Scottish company using hours of audio from his TV show and DVD commentaries, which he lost in multiple surgeries that you already know about because you are a human being with intelligence and curiosity who pays attention to the world around him/her, but if for some reason you missed the Esquire profile of him, which is seriously great, stop missing it), is already too heartbreaking and too heartwarming for words. It is nice to be reminded, especially after this morning?s bitterness, that the human spirit can always triumph, and that this world, which is too much to bear, can still be lived in with dignity and wonder. Roger Ebert: legend. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A couple of suggestions... - AIM for Windows version 5.5 or newer supports for video conferencing with a Mac running iChat AV. (The current version of AIM is 7.1, which is probably what your friend is using, but I am just mentioning this for other folks who might run into this same situation.) - In order for iChat AV to work, the appropriate ports for iChat AV must be opened on your firewall and/or router, as described here: iChat AV: How to Use With a Firewall or NAT Router - In iChat, select your buddy's name, and do Buddies > Show Info. In the middle of their Profile screen, you should see "Capabilities". This is what the AIM service itself sees for what they (on their end, not yours) are capable of doing. A typical list should look something like this: Buddy icon, Inline images, Chat, Receive files, Send files, Encryption, Direct IM, Multiperson conferencing, Camera, Microphone, AIM audio, Recording, iChat Theater, Screen sharing The important ones are: conferencing, Camera, Microphone, AIM audio, etc. - Last, but not least, as a test, add any one of these AIM buddy names to your iChat buddy list and then try to do a video conference with them: > appleu3test02 > appleu3test03 > appleu3test04 > appleu3test05 > appleu3test06 Your friend should also do this. Adding any of these to your iChat buddy list, and establishing a video chat with them, should result in a continual test video stream sent back to your iChat or AIM client. If it works, and you are able to see the video and hear the audio, then you should have no problem doing a "real" video conference, from a Mac or PC, using iChat or AIM, respectively. I remember being at the grand opening in 1999, back when my only wish in the world was to have a tangerine iBook (which I got the following year and still use today). I remember we had a few Pittsburgh Computer Store guys who worked there for some time as well--lots of names looked familiar from the old store in Pittsburgh. I actually was the winner of one of the raffle prizes--an Imation SuperDisk drive! (Those were the drives that could read both floppies and 120MB SuperDisks, which never really took off). The only problem I had at the time--my newest Mac was an LC, meaning I couldn't use it with any of my hardware! Thankfully I was able to put it into service when I got the iBook the following summer. The drive is still 100% functional and is used on the clamshell to this very day. It's been a great run with many awesome memories. I can't wait to check out the new store and am hoping to stop by that day. (If there's any prizes for grand opening like there they had last time, maybe luck will repeat itself--a MacBook Air sure would be nice to have!) From bob at peirce-family.com Sun Mar 7 08:34:32 2010 From: bob at peirce-family.com (Robert Peirce) Date: Sun, 07 Mar 2010 10:34:32 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] The periodic daemons, my final question (I hope) Message-ID: <2D90CB77-76C7-4C8E-A79C-7432F834319D@peirce-family.com> I upgraded my wife's computer from 10.5 to 10.6 and the three periodic daemons get launchd and run correctly. I upgraded my computer from 10.4 to 10.6 and they do not. The seem to get sort of loaded in the sense that list does not show them but unload produces a different error message from the one you get if you try to unload a daemon that was never loaded. Likewise, the load command produces a different error message from the one you get if you try to load a daemon that is already loaded. So, they are kind of in an OS X never-never land. You can get them running with load -F, but this doesn't happen automatically. I went back and looked at 10.4 and discovered these daemons existed in 10.4 but the disabled flag was set. Consequently, all of us that used anacron to run periodic in 10.4 may not have had to do that. OTOH, in 10.6 a new property has been added: AbandonProcessGroup and the flag has been set. Since that exists on both our computers I don't think that is the issue. As near as I can determine, there was something in 10.4 that prevented these daemons from being loaded property. That something went away in 10.5, but since I went from 10.4 directly to 10.6, that something still exists on my computer. What is it and how to I remove it? I discovered com.apple.locate.plist has the same property and exhibits the same launchctl characteristics as the three periodic daemons. org.postfix.master.plist also had this property originally, but I removed it when I was getting postfix working and it loaded as expected on reboot. Does anybody know what AbandonProcessGroup does? It appears to be something like the don't load flag used in 10.4, but it is more like half load in that the daemon gets loaded but doesn't actually run. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Apple was on top for both laptops and desktops, well ahead of the company in second place. Consumer Reports asked 7,000 subscribers about their satisfaction with their computer companies across categories like problem solved, phone waits, phone staff and online support. Each answer was issued a point value, with a maximum of 100 points. Among laptops, Apple scored 86 points. The second place finisher, Lenovo, accumulated up 63 points, for an impressive margin of 23 points. The rest of the leader board includes Toshiba (60 points), Dell (56 points),HP/Compaq (53 points), and Acer/Gateway/eMachines (39 points). Apple scored even better with desktops, racking up 87 total points and leading the field in all categories. Here the 2nd place competitor was Dell which scored 55 points among the participants, a full 32 points behind. Of course, fanboys like you and me are convinced of Apple quality. For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, 'If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.' In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part): 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash....... .Twice a day. 2.. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single 'This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation' warning light. I love the next one!!! 7. The airbag system would ask 'Are you sure?' before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 10. You'd have to press the 'Start' button to turn the engine off. PS - I'd like to add that when all else fails, you could call 'customer service' in some foreign country and be instructed in some foreign language how to fix your car yourself!!!! Please share this with your friends who love - but sometimes hate - their computer! . __,_._,___ From radonaldson at mac.com Fri Mar 19 12:26:27 2010 From: radonaldson at mac.com (Robert A. He's one of 1000 students who was given a free computer last year. by Susan Passi-Klaus In a world where owning a computer can help buy success, not everyone ? especially disadvantaged school children ? can afford the price. Last year, the small but tech-savvy congregation at Cedar Street United Methodist Church salvaged, refurbished and gave away more than 1,000 computers to students who were doing without the learning tool. ?Anything we can do to advance the life of a child or the life of an adult without hope is doing God?s work,? said the Rev. Karen Jones, pastor of Cedar Street UMC. When people discover that this 25-member Tyler, Texas, congregation of 70- to 80-year-old former computer know-nothings rallied to become the largest authorized computer-salvage location in East Texas, they begin to understand why Cedar Street?s outreach program is called Mustard Seed Ministries. Matthew 13:31-32 (NRSV) tells the parable of the mustard seed. ?The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.? ?We want to plant hope for the future of these children,? said Rev. Jones. ?We want every kid to believe that whatever dream they have for their future is a very real possibility ? they can make it happen.? The computer ministry at Cedar Street is a seed of an idea that has grown into a massive tree with branches that extend to hundreds of families in the largely low-income Hispanic community surrounding the 130 year-old church?and beyond. It all started eight years ago when Jones decided to offer her aging congregation computer classes. With the oldest student logging on at the age of 96, Jones relied on borrowed computers to teach her beginners. News got out that the church wanted to establish a computer lab and Jones ended up with a windfall of 150 salvaged computers. ?Being good Methodists, we weren?t going to thrown them in the trash,? Jones laughed. ?We kept 20 and refurbished the rest of them to give away to every 5th grader at a local elementary school. One hundred and twenty-five kids got a computer that year.? Word spread to nearby hospitals, county and state offices, non-profit organizations and individuals -?Don?t? throw away old computers?give them to Cedar Street United Methodist!? Pallet after pallet of old computers kept coming and the list of folks willing to volunteer to repair and restore them kept growing. It now takes three locations to house the ministry, including the converted parsonage, a storage facility and the whole upstairs of the church. The staff of ?techs? has grown from 4 to 25 ? many retirees from the local community who don?t even attend the church. ?Our techs joke that working for the ministry keeps them out of trouble,? Jones laughed. ?But they?ll also acknowledge that it keeps their minds active because they continue to learn new technology. Many will say that the best part is that it keeps them in touch with kids because they go to all the school distributions.? This is a ?no strings attached? program. There is no charge for the PCs ? which come complete with keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor, Microsoft Office XP, Office Suite Professional, anti-virus protection and five educational programs. All the equipment is guaranteed for life. The only thing they ask is that children who receive the computers do ten hours of service at a church or non-profit. It even counts if they mow a neighbor?s yard or volunteer at their school. ?It?s a circle thing,? said Jones. ?We believe that if someone gives you a gift, then it?s important to give back in some way. You get a gift, you give a gift. ?We give them the tools and even teach them how to use those tools, but they have to use them productively to build their own future and to make their own dreams come true.? Jones said they see child after child whose life is turned around by this high-tech kindness. ?Parents come in and tell us how their child was failing the school tests, but with the software we provided, they were able to pass,? she said. ?For many of them, it?s the first time they even consider that college could be a possibility. ?We?ve been offered big bucks to make Mustard Seed a commercial operation, but it?s not our mission,? Jones said. ?We are totally devoted to doing it God?s way.? Update: Mustard Seed 2 will open May 1, 2010 in Port Arthur Texas. It will begin as a teaching ministry and later evolve into refurbishing computers. In addition, Mustard Seed Ministries is currently raising funds so that they create their own Internet Service Provider which will allow East Texas school children free access to the Internet. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/18/amazon-releases-kindle-for-mac-application/). I was greatly interested in the Kindle books when they were first offered, but couldn't justify the price of the reader, especially since the book prices seemed not to be discounted enough to justify forgoing the book. Even though I travel, I like the convenience of a printed book. But the idea of loading up 25 lbs of books on one light, electronic device has its appeal. The Kindle via free software seems like just the sweet spot for me. Especially for the larger screen on the iPad. I have installed the Kindle software both on my MacBook and on my iPhone. I purchased an electronic book on each platform and am happy to report that I can read either book on either platform. I just need to log in to my Amazon account. I am looking forward to receiving my iPad and installing there (assuming Kindle for iPad will be available). Since I am presently working in Japan, this avenue of obtaining reading material is really great. I can buy books on amazon.jp and have them delivered to my hotel, but their English language site still has too many of those funny scribbles for me to completely understand what I am ordering. I was confused about navigation on the MacBook because the Kindle browser has a back button and no Next button. I kept trying to find a next button. Finally, the obvious thing worked - use the navigation buttons on the keyboard! Also, when you mouse over the right and left margin, navigation buttons appear on the screen. Of course on the iPhone, the pages flick back and forth just like photos. I like it! Steve Jobs wants to sell books on iTunes for a higher price than Amazon is offering through Kindle software. I wonder where that collision is headed? It used to be that the new release was available for 9.99 when the hard cover hit the shelves or very soon there after. As my wife tends to buy them when they come out she was saving between $15-20 per new release so the cost of the reader for her was easy to justify. Adding in that we don't end up with shelves and shelves of books (especially after the last move where we realized that we had almost as many boxes of books as we had everything else) Though with the move to $15 books it kinda cuts into that savings but we still can both read the books at the same time as we share the same amazon acccount. > I have installed the Kindle software both on my MacBook and on my iPhone. > I purchased an electronic book on each platform and am happy to report that > I can read either book on either platform. The desktop one will let you use the arrow keys as well as click on the border area and you can also do a click and drag action to move to the next page also. The back button is more if you click on the timeline at the bottom to move forward so you can go back to the page you were just on. I tend to use it when I mess up and tap the timeline and end up on a random page not knowing where I am. > Steve Jobs wants to sell books on iTunes for a higher price than Amazon is > offering through Kindle software. I wonder where that collision is headed? > We have already seen the shift in the amazon store to the $15 price point. It is a bit annoying to say the least as the distribution costs of a digital book are much less than a physical book. No longer do they have to print millions of copies to be able to blanket the book stores across the country then suck up the cost of the books that go unsold. The ones that really get me are the older titles that sell for $5 when the paper back version is available for $5.50 or in some cases the same price let alone the used book version that is going for half the price of the digital one. I hope that the iBook store has content that really makes a difference and is worth the premium. For your typical fiction books there is little difference between a paperback and a digital version but if they put text books on it that have illustrations and rich media then I would be okay with the digital version costing more than the print one. One interesting aspect is the best seller list on Amazon where you can find alot of books that are free or really cheap. I wish they would add a list of free books that normally have a value higher than free so that you could see the currently discounted books. I have "bought" a number of the free books then found that I really liked them and ended up buying the next ones in the series. I think that the digital distribution method gives the option to give away the first book without loosing anything to get people hooked for the later books. Hope you enjoy the digital reading, Rob -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sara Dickey, who is making her 8th trip to Zimbabwe will be the leader of the spring trip taking place from April 15 to May 4, 2010. Join a trip to Zimbabwe. The next trips are July 15 - August 1, 2010, July 29 - August 15, 2010 and September 23 - October 15, 2010. There are specific goals set for the team?s work in April. The container sent in November by The Nyadire Connection (TNC) and Brother?s Brother has arrived in Nyadire, and its contents have been emptied into the storage room. The storage room was designed by Dr. Tshiani and TNC provided the necessary funds to complete it. Among the team?s primary tasks are to: Unload and distribute the contents to the various groups and departments on the Mission. The team will also develop a process/procedure for the distribution for future containers. Set up the 43 Apple computers throughout the mission and provide technical support for those who will use them. Five of the computers will installed in the Internet Caf? at the Nyadire Hospital for persons on the mission to use. Dave Sevick, Apple consultant and member of Calvary UMC, who worked as a volunteer reconditioning these computers at Goodwill Industries, will be in charge of this project. Work on the Community Library. Some 4000 books, donated by Half Price Books, will need to be processed and shelved. Visit with the pastors of the Mutoko-Mudzi District and give them letters from their partners in the WPA Conference. Of course, time will be spent with the friends on the mission and the children of the Home of Hope and letters will be exchanged. Three of the members of the VIM trip are making return visits ? Sara Dickey, Janet Elders and Sue Bower all of Christ UMC. They will be joined by Dave Sevick of Calvary UMC, Rev. Kelly Smith, Trinity Towers UMC, Sandy McKnight of St. Paul?s UMC, Aaron Cannon of NC, Jim Gourley and Sue McCann of the Baltimore/ Washington Conference who are going over on another trip but will hook up with the WPA Vim Trip. Today, we tried to keep up with the morning whirlwind in the form of four members of the visiting St. Alphonus School Tech Team. In just over two hours, Colleen Ballantyne, Annamarie Lovre, Ryan Wasil and Carl Foss de-manufacured 14 iMacs. They were tearing through them so quickly, we had to make a trip to the basement to get them more. At one point, young Mr. Foss was spotted with a screwdriver in each hand, trying to turn two screws at once. John Hamill, King of the RAM Tester, presided over his duties in his newly-appointed work station, testing a postal service bin full of RAM today. We're not telling where the swivel chair with arms came from. We refurbished just seven Macs today, but three of them are Leopard-capable (two more Mirror Drive Door Dual 1.25 ghz G4 Towers). We also de-manufactured four more Macs and one Apple CRT display after our visitors left. That makes 18 Macs and one display de-manufactured. Our all-time total of refurbished Macs is now 2,381. We took in three keyboards today. We're still very short, and we will soon be turning our attention to cleaning and testing what's come in over the past several weeks. We're dreading the actual counting.... We've wrapped up the first quarter of 2010, and here's some figures for you (forgive the listing in pounds, but it's what recyclers deal with): ? Refurbished items: 3,392.2 pounds (95 items). ? De-manufatured items: 4,126.1 pounds (111 items). ? Total weight: 7,478.3. That's 3.74 TONS. I know MY back hurts....
