The $795 million in grants and loans funded by the 2009 economic stimulus act will create 5,000 jobs and generate $200 million in associated private investment, according to information provided by the White House. "In total, tens of millions of Americans and over 685,000 businesses, 900 health care facilities and 2,400 schools in all fifty states stand to benefit from the awards," the White House said. The money will bring broadband services to communities that "currently have little or no access, to help them better compete and do business in the global marketplace," the document said. Video: Finland: Internet access a legal right "With new or increased broadband access, communities can compete on a level playing field to attract new businesses, schools can create distance learning opportunities, medical professionals can provide cost-efficient remote diagnoses and care, and business owners can expand the market for their products beyond their neighborhoods to better compete in the global economy," the White House document said. Obama will announce infrastructure grants and loans focusing on "middle mile connections" to communities lacking broadband access and "last mile awards" to connect homes, hospitals and schools to their community's broadband infrastructure, the document said. In addition, the federal money also will fund public computing centers in libraries, community colleges and other public venues, according to the document. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... School must be out. We've begun to get larger-than-usual weekly donations as Macs trickle in from several school districts. Today we added 11 Macs to our refurbished inventory, re-imaged 2 from older ComputerWorks store stock, and de-manufactured 8 Macs and three Apple printers. As one of the de-manufactured Macs was a previously refurbished machine, our counter deducted it from our total. Our all-time total of refurbished Macs is now 2,564. A gentle reminder the ComputerWorks store is now open in its temporary quarters in Goodwill's retail store at 2700 East Carson St., just a block from the former location on Pittsburgh's South Side. It's a bit smaller that the previous store, but they still carry everything they used to display, you just may have to ask for it if you don't see it. When you enter the store, turn right an head for the back of the store. We took in nine keyboards (three with missing keys, and four with notes indicating they don't work) and three mice along with 17 Macs in the weekly donation bin. Ditto the weekly note pointing out our shortage of keyboards and mice. We'll have another workday next Friday, July 9, 2010. We hope to see you there! Robert A. You will see a demonstration of how low-end PC's and Macs ( ones that are not being sold at the Goodwill Store in the Good-To-Go program ) can be transformed into useable desktop computers using: http://edubuntu.org/ Edubuntu is an educational operating system that is a part of the Ubuntu family. It aims to make Ubuntu, the popular Linux-based operating system, a great choice for the computing needs of children, students, parents, teachers, and schools. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Edubuntu seeks to bring the freedoms and spirit of Ubuntu to children, parents, students, teachers, and schools. Our recycling team see Edubuntu as a new modern tool for school-aged users and teachers. But on older hardware !! Perfectly suited for our missions in Pittsburgh and across the world. Our special guest is Johnny Qwalick of Goodwill. This meeting will be a demonstration lab for how to use Edubuntu and how it is installed using SuperDuper, Clonezilla, and PXE servers. Should be very cool. This may just be the way we proceed in imaging our recycled Macs and PCs in the future. We are experimenting ... and you can be right there with us in the live demonstration. The Goodwill store already sells the faster PC computers running, Windows XP, our Apples running Tiger 10.4.11 and now has moved on to Ubuntu 10.04 on the PC's. We seek to see if Macs can join the party ! ===== This is a new day and a new direction for our users groups ..... Yes we still love the Unix based Mac OS ... Cheetah, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard ..... But there is another Open Source world of Linux software ( another popular form of Unix ) called Ubuntu Linux. And this latest version 10.04 is taking the world by storm. Let's dig in and listen to what Johnny Qwalick can teach us tomorrow night. 7-9PM .... In a lab setting at MacOutfitters, we explored Edubuntu and Ubuntu on a G4 eMac and two PC's. We imaged two PCs with the PXE server and Clonezilla. We spent a majority of our time with interactive demonstrations of the many apps on the Ubuntu Desktop and compared them to what we know who to use on Macs. Aristide Niyungeko, our exchange student from Burundi, Africa took the floor and showed how he could easily localize the freshly imaged Ubuntu based CPU to be native to his country that speaks primarily French. Will there be a Linux support group here in Pittsburgh? ... we'll let you know ! Marty Swartz and our Goodwill volunteers are still working on a Ubuntu PPC 10.04 solution that will use low RAM and less hard drive space for G3 machines. That project is next as we put our heads together. It is not as easy as the PC installs. For now we do have a workable solution with low-end Intel PC's that hopefully will NOT be de-manufactured and can be used for humanitarian outreach ..... More news soon. Many thanks to Johnny again for his efforts to keep us current with all things Mac and Open Source. Nightcap was at Primanti Brothers ! Please forgive this late update; it's been a really busy week for everyone. I could tell a white lie and say we were up all night celebrating the birth of Dave Sevick's first grandchild, Max David Anderson, but in reality, only Dave stayed up... :-) Charles Firth paid a visit to tune up our G5 server and install a new switch dedicated to imaging satanic Windows PCs with Ubuntu Linux, a future endeavor rapidly approaching. We subjected rookie volunteer Aristide Niyungeko to one of the worst indignities possible. We made him de-manufacture an eMac, but, sadly, we forgot to make him count the screws he took out. Maybe next time... We added 11 Macs to our refurbished inventory, re-imaged one from a ComputerWorks store return, and de-manufactured 13 Macs, one Apple printer, and 14 Apple CRT Studio Displays. Our all-time total of refurbished Macs is now 2,575. When you enter the store, turn right and head for the back of the store. Among the things you might not see on the shelves are 18 G4 eMacs and 29 G4 PowerMac Towers. We saw just four keyboards and two mice in the weekly donation bin. You know the drill... We'll have another workday next Friday, July 16, 2010. We hope to see you there! Robert A. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned. To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design. At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this? We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising. Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don?t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place. To fix this, we are adopting AT&T?s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone?s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see. We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same? the iPhone 4?s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused. As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do. Thank you for your patience and support. Apple -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Fitz and Charlie began the intense surgery on the iMac G4s we've been sitting on. Today I realized I had no voicemails since 7/15, and that the odds of no one leaving me a message in over a week were slim. So I checked my voicemail box the old fashioned way and discovered 5 unheard messages. Not cool. I'm assuming the update to 4.0.1 broke something, but don't really know for sure. I've also read some articles and forums exhibiting the problem with earlier phones/OSes, so this might apply to iPhone 3G/3Gs, etc. So here's some advice and tips - If you think you might not be receiving voicemail on the phone - here's how to check your voicemail manually: On your iPhone: Press and hold the "1" button - this will automatically connect to your voicemail. -or- Dial your own number from the phone. Possible things to try to fix a voicemail issue: 1) Turn off WiFi - If you spend all your time in WiFI, you might not get voicemail - it appears the initial connection to AT&T for voicemail needs 3G/Edge. This is unconfirmed and a rumor, but sounds plausible to me. 2) Reset your voicemail password. Call 611 and choose option 3 (voicemail options) and the option to reset the PIN. AT&T will text message you with a new PIN you can re-enter in your Voicemail window (if it prompts you, mine didn't). You can also change your PIN in Settings -> Phone -> Change Voicemail Password. (So you can change the random PIN AT&T texted you back to something you can remember) 3) Go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. This will revert your iPhone back to defaults for the AT&T settings, and then reboot. This might fix it. 4) Remove and re-insert your MicroSIM card. This forces the AT&T network to re-sync the phone. NOTE: none of these fixes worked for me personally, but people online have reported success. 5) Backup and Restore the iPhone. (this worked for me)- Yeah, basically erase the phone and reinstall the OS from scratch. Attach the iPhone to iTunes and right-click (or Ctrl-Click) on the phone to backup the phone. Then choose the "Restore" option and let it wipe the phone's memory and reinstall the OS. Once that's done, you can then follow the prompts to restore from your backup. This is going to take a long time if (like me) you have a lot of apps and media on the phone. NOTE: if this works, you should see the Voicemail notification the moment the phone reboots after the OS install (and before you go through the process to restore from backup all your apps and media) Hopefully this helps someone else out there ;) Charles -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Visual voicemail quit working on the phone. A full restore was also necessary from me to get it working again. At the time, I spent a good deal of time with AT&T support while working on trying to resolve the issue. What I was told at the time is that it's an authentication issue between the phone and voicemail servers. The phone has to authenticate using a "hidden" unique ID to protect voicemails from getting hijacked. If the authentication process gets screwed up, it ends up acting like you don't have any voicemail. Unfortunately, there is no notification of the error until you realize you haven't gotten any new voicemails. She has been a Mac user for about 4 years now (thanks to dad!) ... Lo and behold the university requires on line access to their class administration system through some sort of vendor software in order for her to look at her class schedule, services, grades, progress reports, etc. Well .... the ONLY browser that supports it is ---- Explorer! Linux or Mac is a big no-no. So, after a Parallels and Windows install we were able to get the school software up and running on her Mac Book Pro. It was a heck of tedium which at one point, caused my daughter to throw up here hands and groan... "Arrrrrrgh! This is why I hate Windows!" It was music to my ears since it took a lot of convincing to get her to use a Mac. ;-) Peace, Bill James From dave at davesevick.com Wed Jul 28 02:37:07 2010 From: dave at davesevick.com (Dave Sevick) Date: Wed, 28 Jul 2010 04:37:07 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] Hosanna Industries - our partner in helping support low-income families with computers - is now on Facebook Message-ID: <21DA3D9C-ED0B-4A0C-9D38-21EB723808A5@davesevick.com> Dear Apple folks, For several years the great folks at Hosanna Industries have been helping us build benches and identify families that could use our recycled computers.
