If it weren't such a cruel notion, the museum should put him in a glass case and add him to its new, $19 million makeover, set to open next month. The Woz is a treasure, a genuine Silicon Valley article and a fascinating artifact in his own way. Which is how he does things -- in his own way. Wozniak was at the museum to give reporters a tour of the remodeled museum and stir up enthusiasm for the debut exhibit, "Revolution: The First 2,000 Years of Computing." He started by saying that he wasn't a historian. And then, in the course of a morning, he proceeded to describe, better than any history book, the magical hold of technology. "This was thefrom most important part of my life," he told me shortly after walking through the exhibit, stopping to point out computers that he read about as a child, worked on in college and designed afterward. "Every one of those little devices that I talked about meant so much more to me than I can put into words." It was a fun and informative tour, but it got me thinking more about Wozniak himself than about the massive IBM RAMAC disk stack or the Control Data Corp. 6600 supercomputer or the Data General Nova minicomputer he stopped to talk about. The truth is, Wozniak has always been the second Steve. Steve Jobs, Wozniak's Apple co-founder, is mercurial and aloof, but he is adored. For years, Apple fans have hung on his every word. He is praised in the media as a business genius, which he is, and applauded for a fashion-forward sense of style, which he possesses. But being at the museum with Wozniak, listening to him talk about his love and loyalty for San Jose, and his heartfelt conviction that computer technology can make the world a better place for everyone, and his pride in Apple, left me with a question: I wonder if we're worshiping the wrong Steve? Yes, Jobs has done amazing things -- bringing Apple back from the dead and building it into the world's most valuable technology company has to count as the business world's most successful comeback ever, for one. But think about what Wozniak has done, often much more quietly. Wozniak put up early money for the Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose, eventually contributing millions, he says in his autobiography, "iWoz." He donated seed money for the Tech Museum of Innovation, and he provided early contributions for the Cleveland San Jose Ballet (now Ballet San Jose). "That came from the heart," said the 60-year-old Wozniak. "I grew up here. I was born in San Jose and I always wanted to, if I had more than I needed, I wanted to give back." When Apple went public in 1980, Wozniak gave away some of his founders' stock to employees who had left the company pre-IPO. He donated tech gear to schools. He taught computer courses in the Los Gatos public schools for years and for free. I asked Wozniak what he thought about my notion concerning our Steve worship and whether we worshiped the wrong one. He'd have none of it, starting with Apple. The company needed both Steves, Wozniak said. "I really hit on the ideas," he said. Wozniak says he was the whiz with hardware and software. "And Steve has a more important talent," he continued. "The guy on top has to be able to recognize where the best talent in the world is and he certainly recognized it in me." For anyone else, the last part would be bragging, but not Wozniak. As he took us through the museum, it became apparent how brilliant an engineer he is. He stopped at the Apple-1, the company's first computer and the machine that first put computers into the grasp of "the rest of us." His vision for the Apple-1 when it shipped in 1976 was simple -- and profound. "I didn't design this computer to make a lot of money and start a company,'' he said. "I wanted to accelerate the world advancement in the social revolution." The Apple-1 would be a new way to communicate. A new way for the individual to exercise power. He walked over to the Apple II on display nearby. "This is my real gem," he said, "the greatest design of my life." And no one -- not a docent, no guard, nobody -- said a word when he pulled off the top panel to show the machine's motherboard. "About half as many chips," he said. A great innovator builds what others can't even imagine. And Wozniak started imagining the possibilities early on. As he made his way through the museum, he talked about how his dad, a Lockheed engineer, introduced him to the world of transistors and integrated circuits and to the joy of inventing and the power of technology. He talked about how in the late 1960s, he had two posters on his wall -- both of computers. And how they helped inspire a persistent thought. "Some day," he remembers thinking, "I want to have my own computer at home." Yes, the rest is history -- history fit for a museum. Contact Mike Cassidy at mcassidy at mercurynews.com or 408-920-5536. Dear Mac friends: Many thanks to Charlie Hutchens, Tucker Trainor, Charles Firth, Aristide Niyungeko and Dave Sevick for joining me at the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center "annex" last Friday. Please excuse this tardy update; it's been pretty busy... Dave has replaced the power supply on our G5 server and Charles Firth did the necessary reconfigurations, with his iPad, no less. One set of benches has been wired with 16 ethernet jacks and our test NetBoot was successful. We're ready to rock again. We only have three more bin loads of eMacs to pull from the basement at the 2700 building, which we plan to do this week. Goodwill is to be completely out of that location by December 17. The new parking arrangements in the Goodwill lot across the street from our new 2400 East Carson St. location are fantastic. No hassles in finding a spot on the street! If you think you may want to join us some Friday, please send me your car make, color and license number so we can let Goodwill know you will be in the lot. This week, December 10, will be our last in workday 2010. We'll be taking off the rest of the year and resume our regular weekly workdays on Friday, January 7, 2011. We hope to see you Friday! Message-ID: <21AA1064-C9CD-48C5-98CA-F4D5EB4B6260@davesevick.com> QuickTime 7.6.9 update resolves 15 vulns Today Apple announced the availability of QuickTime 7.6.9 for OS X 10.5 and Windows platforms. This release fixes 13 vulnerabilities in QuickTime for OS X Leopard and 15 vulnerabilities on the Windows platform. Keep in mind that if you use iTunes it requires that you install QuickTime as well, so be sure to check for updates. Apple has provided a direct download link for IT folks at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/. All 13 vulnerabilities for OS X can cause unexpected application termination (what you and I call a crash, but you can't say crash on a Mac) or arbitrary code execution (make quicktime run programs... BAD). Strangely if you go to Apple's download page, as you can see in the image above, the iTunes bundle will still install an outdated version of QuickTime. The best method for updating QuickTime for OS X Leopard (10.5) computers is to click the fruit logo in the upper-left corner and choose Software Update. Windows users can choose Apple Software Update from the Start menu, or launch QuickTime and check for updates under the Help menu. So if you run Windows or Leopard and install the updates you are now protected against these new flaws... What about Snow Leopard? Mum's the word so far, as QuickTime is integrated into OS X Snow Leopard and is not a separate component. I checked the last OS update from Apple and these CVEs are not patched, which leads me to believe Snow Leopard users are at risk from these flaws for now. Theoretically these CVEs could impact iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch users too, as QuickTime is a central piece of Apple's multimedia strategy. If you are a Snow Leopard user, be cautious of AVIs, JPGs, MPG/MPEGs, MOVs and other content types of dubious origin. Unfortunately, this further demonstrates Apple's scattered security strategy: unannounced random updates for random platforms that leave windows of opportunity for those intent on compromising their devices. Everyone else should patch as soon as possible. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Yesterday the forces of Anonymous (4chan) decided to take issue with the perceived censorship of government critics by performing DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks against entities involved in removing WikiLeaks from the internet. The most prominent attacks by the legion of Anonymous began by targeting PayPalblog.com. Strangely, they did not attempt to take PayPal itself down, but went after the public mouthpiece of the company. Early on December 8th US Eastern time they began attacking MasterCard.com as noted by Carole Theriault. For the most part, disrupting MasterCard.com didn't impact payment card processing. However, some MasterCard customers subscribe to a secondary form of authentication called SecureCode. This requires that you enter an additional security code when making online purchases using your credit card. The denial of service against MasterCard's web presence prevented customers using this technology from making online purchases during the attack. After largely succeeding in the attack against MasterCard, Anonymous began to attack Visa.com. Despite 4chan's claims that they were bringing Visa to its knees, I was able to access their website throughout the attack. At the same time, Twitter began to suspend accounts related to the coordination of the attacks, such as @Anon_Operations and @AnonOperation. As I have mentioned previously, it is against the law to participate in DDoS attacks, even if many people are angry about the coordinated efforts to shut down WikiLeaks. The public has had its eyes opened to how easy it is for a small group of internet users to have a large impact on the functioning of major websites. Unfortunately the internet is still a growing entity and is not yet strong enough to defend itself against determined adversaries. Don't let yourself be found in the position of US diplomats... The American and European experts say their security websites, which deal with the computer worm known as Stuxnet, continue to be swamped with traffic from Tehran and other places in the Islamic Republic, an indication that the worm continues to infect the computers at Iran's two nuclear sites. The Stuxnet worm, named after initials found in its code, is the most sophisticated cyberweapon ever created. Examination of the worm shows it was a cybermissile designed to penetrate advanced security systems. It was equipped with a warhead that targeted and took over the controls of the centrifuge systems at Iran?s uranium processing center in Natanz, and it had a second warhead that targeted the massive turbine at the nuclear reactor in Bashehr. Stuxnet was designed to take over the control systems and evade detection, and it apparently was very successful. Last week President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, after months of denials, admitted that the worm had penetrated Iran's nuclear sites, but he said it was detected and controlled. The second part of that claim, experts say, doesn?t ring true. Eric Byres, a computer expert who has studied the worm, said his site was hit with a surge in traffic from Iran, meaning that efforts to get the two nuclear plants to function normally have failed. The web traffic, he says, shows Iran still hasn?t come to grips with the complexity of the malware that appears to be still infecting the systems at both Bashehr and Natanz. ?The effort has been stunning," Byres said. "Two years ago American users on my site outnumbered Iranians by 100 to 1. Today we are close to a majority of Iranian users.? He said that while there may be some individual computer owners from Iran looking for information about the virus, it was unlikely that they were responsible for the vast majority of the inquiries because the worm targeted only the two nuclear sites and did no damage to the thousands of other computers it infiltrated. At one of the larger American web companies offering advice on how to eliminate the worm, traffic from Iran has swamped that of its largest user: the United States. ?Our traffic from Iran has really spiked,? said a corporate officer who asked that neither he nor his company be named. ?Iran now represents 14.9 percent of total traffic, surpassing the United States with a total of 12.1 percent. Given the different population sizes, that is a significant number.? Perhaps more significantly, traffic from Tehran to the company's site is now double that of New York City. Ron Southworth, who runs the SCADA (the Supervisory Control and Data Access control system that the worm specifically targeted) list server, said that until two years ago he had clearly identified users from Iran, ?but they all unsubscribed at about the same time.? Since the announcement of the Stuxnet malware, he said, he has seen a jump in users, but few openly from Iran. He suspects there is a cat-and-mouse game going on that involves hiding the e-mail addresses, but he said it was clear his site was being searched by a number of users who have gone to a great deal of effort to hide their country of origin. Byres said there are a growing number of impostors signing on to Stuxnet security sites. ?I had one guy sign up who I knew and called him. He said it wasn?t his account. In another case a guy saying he was Israeli tried to sign up. He wasn?t.? The implication, he says, is that such a massive effort is a sign of a coordinated effort. Ralph Langner, the German expert who was among the first to study and raise alarms about Stuxnet, said he was not surprised by the development. ?The Iranians don?t have the depth of knowledge to handle the worm or understand its complexity,? he said, raising the possibility that they may never succeed in eliminating it. ?Here is their problem. They should throw out every personal computer involved with the nuclear program and start over, but they can?t do that. Moreover, they are completely dependent on outside companies for the construction and maintenance of their nuclear facilities. They should throw out their computers as well. But they can?t,? he explained. ?They will just continually re-infect themselves.? ?With the best of expertise and equipment it would take another year for the plants to function normally again because it is so hard to get the worm out. It even hides in the back-up systems. But they can?t do it,? he said. And Iran?s anti-worm effort may have had another setback. In Tehran, men on motorcycles attacked two leading nuclear scientists on their way to work. Using magnetic bombs, the motorcyclists pulled alongside their cars and attached the devices. One scientist was wounded and the other killed. Confirmed reports say that the murdered scientist was in charge of dealing with the Stuxnet virus at the nuclear plants. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Apple's Steve Wozniak: 'We've lost a lot of control' By Mark Milian, CNN Find this article at: http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/innovation/12/08/steve.wozniak.computers/index.html STORY HIGHLIGHTS ? Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has hesitations about a tech- dominated society ? Wozniak carries five to 10 cell phones but expresses frustrations with unreliable products ? He has hand-picked several artifacts for an upcoming exhibit at the Computer History Museum Mountain View, California (CNN) -- The world has mostly caught on to Steve Wozniak's vision of having a computer in every home. But this digital lifestyle can sometimes turn rotten, he said last week. Wozniak, who co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs and designed, programmed and built some of the world's first personal computers, laments the byproducts of a culture that's always connected to electronics. Leading a tour through an exhibit of computer artifacts -- including giant supercomputers and Atari game systems -- that opens next month at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Wozniak paused to criticize the stranglehold technology has on our lives. "We're dependent on it," he said at the museum, which holds one of the world's largest collections of vintage computers and sits about six blocks from Google's headquarters. "And eventually, we are going to have it doing every task we can in the world, so we can sit back and relax." Wozniak's musings have undertones of science-fiction, drawing parallels between the internet and robots bent on taking over humanity. "All of a sudden, we've lost a lot of control," he said. "We can't turn off our internet; we can't turn off our smartphones; we can't turn off our computers." "You used to ask a smart person a question. Now, who do you ask? It starts with g-o, and it's not God," he quipped. Earlier that day, Wozniak said the biggest obstacle with the growing prevalence of technology is that our personal devices are unreliable. "Little things that work one day; they don't work the next day," he said enthusiastically, waving his hands. "I think it's much harder today than ever before to basically know that something you have ... is going to work tomorrow." Reciting an all-too-common living-room frustration, Wozniak told a story about the countless hours he spent trying to troubleshoot his media player, called Slingbox. "There is no solution," Wozniak said of tech troubles. "Everything has a computer in it nowadays; everything with a computer is going to fail. The solution is: kill the people who invented these things," he said with a smile. Joking aside, by that logic, Wozniak should be target No. 1 on that hit list. He developed the Apple I, a hobbyist computer, and its more mainstream successors. His work jump-started the personal computer revolution. As it happens, the museum exhibit is called "Revolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing." Wozniak, one of 52 fellows at the museum, was asked to hand-pick eight items on display. "It's transformed our lives," Computer History Museum CEO John Hollar said of the personal computer. "It's transformed our cultures." Wozniak, 60, the computer whiz whose Apple shares easily sustain his Segway-riding lifestyle, retired from full-time employment at Apple in 1987. But "the Woz" has remained in the spotlight, thanks to a turn as a "Dancing with the Stars" contestant in 2009 and a much-publicized relationship with comedian Kathy Griffin. Last month, he appeared in London for the auction of a rare Apple I computer that sold for $213,000. One was also on display at the Computer History Museum. During Wozniak's short-lived run on "Dancing with the Stars," gossip bloggers noted his short, portly frame and compared him to a teddy bear. In person, he comes off as kind, humble and patient -- although one of the few things that test his patience, it seems, is computers. Despite his frustrations with gadgetry, Wozniak is still a gearhead. He says he carries five to 10 cell phones around with him at a given time. Sometimes he'll set up half a dozen of them, along with standalone GPS units, on his car's windshield, all navigating him to the same spot. On Thursday, he had three: two iPhones (including an elusive white model that has yet to be sold in stores) and another running Google's Android operating system. He is a voracious news consumer whose days are engrossed in "thousands of tech headlines." And Wozniak recently made headlines of his own. In one, he compared Android to Microsoft's Windows and said that Google's system would eventually dominate the smartphone market. He echoed this sentiment to CNN. "Apple likes to sit and control the whole user experience better, and it's a tradeoff," Wozniak said. "The Android platform might have the greater market share, but individually as a company, I'm sure Apple will probably wind up on top in mobile phones." Wozniak also created some blogosphere buzz when he was quoted as saying Apple had acquired language-software maker Nuance, a tip that turned out to be incorrect. Last week, he made repeated mention to the similar company that Apple actually did buy, called Siri. Wozniak appears most excited about these types of software, which interpret what you're saying and translate that into actions readable by computers. "Eventually, we might just be wearing our computers like a watch and speaking to them," he said. (He's already there; he wears a touch- screen iPod Nano with a band around his wrist.) "Every step of the way, things get less in our way. It's less like the technology is there. It's more like our thoughts go directly into the actions that we want." That's the ideal future, he said. Technology romanticism aside, Wozniak says his favorite device is a laptop: the MacBook Pro. His hesitations about the world's reliance on computers sometimes fade into fond memories of the early days of computing. The first Apple computer was a homebrew distributed for free. "I didn't design this computer to make a lot of money," Wozniak said later when the tour stopped in front of the original Apple computer, a wooden and silicon contraption that's rough around the edges. "I wanted to accelerate the world's advancement in the social revolution that it would cause. So I gave away my designs for free. "But eventually, Steve Jobs came and said, 'Why don't we build it for (consumers)?'" he continued. That was after his then-employer Hewlett- Packard "turned me down five times on the idea," he said. Whether computers work all the time or not, the formula certainly worked to make Apple a wildly successful business. And it gives Wozniak time to observe the revolution he helped make. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It was a good day and a bad day. Cafe Davio didn't come through with the promised beef stew for lunch but we rocked the rehab bench. The quiet at our new location is still a novelty; we find ourselves still shouting out to each other when we can speak with normal tone. Our last week for the year was quite productive. We rehabilitated 17 Macs, including 12 G4 eMacs. Our all time total is now 2,787. We de-manufactured just one Mac. All of our stuff has been removed from the 2700 East Carson building, and Goodwill's last day there will be next Friday, Dec. 17. Until they get up and running again at the new location on 51st St. in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood, we'll be working on the stock we've transferred in the past three weeks. The new parking arrangements in the Goodwill lot across the street from our new 2400 East Carson St. location are fantastic. No hassles in finding a spot on the street! If you think you may want to join us some Friday, please send me your car make, color and license number so we can let Goodwill know you will be in the lot. We'll be taking off the rest of the year and resume our regular weekly workdays on Friday, January 7, 2011. I'll be crunching our numbers for the year in the next couple of weeks and I'll send an update summarizing our year's activity. We hope to see you next year! Robert A. AAPL: 320.36 (0.00, +0%) | NASDAQ: 2617.22 (0.00, +0%) Apple today announced that the Mac App Store will open for business on Thursday, January 6. By bringing the revolutionary App Store experience to Mac OS X, the Mac App Store makes discovering, installing and updating Mac apps easier than ever. The Mac App Store will be available in 90 countries at launch and will feature paid and free apps in categories like Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities. ?The App Store revolutionized mobile apps,? said Steve Jobs, Apple?s CEO, in the press release. ?We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can?t wait to get started on January 6.? The Mac App Store lets you browse new and noteworthy apps, find out what?s hot, view staff favorites, search categories and read customer ratings and reviews. Like on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, you can purchase, download and install apps in just one click and start using them immediately. Purchased apps can run on all of your personal Macs and updates are delivered directly through the Mac App Store so it?s easy to keep all of your apps up to date. The Mac App Store is available to Mac OS X Snow Leopard users as a free download through Software Update. Mac developers set the price for their apps, keep 70 percent of the sales revenue, are not charged for free apps and do not have to pay hosting, marketing or credit card fees. Message-ID: <45F7697B-424D-49DE-B0BC-B6584C008009@davesevick.com> Merry Christmas everyone. I have had several people ask about the use of social networks ... are they good or bad. Should they join Facebook? Twitter? If you have ever had to coordinate folks to respond an emergency with an old fashioned "phone chain" .... you'll appreciate the local and international reach of these new communication networks being pioneered by the youth of the world. So to demonstrate the beauty of many people acting as one, I'd like to highlight the concept of Flash Mobs. Not a new concept by any means, but enough people have not seen one ... that it is high time we show one here. Flash mobs are "spontaneous" gatherings of singing or some planned performance. The result can be a fantastic coordinated spectacle. 2010 - Chorus in a mall - On November 13, 2010 unsuspecting shoppers got a big surprise while enjoying their lunch. Over 100 participants in this awesome Christmas Flash Mob. http://www.youtube.com/user/AlphabetPhotography ===== 2009 - Sound of Music inside Central Station Antwerp (Belgium) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EYAUazLI9k 2008 - Frozen Grand Central - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwMj3PJDxuo 2007 - Manchester Supermarket - mass freeze frame - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4GMXavfKPY&feature=related ====== Social networking can also be used for disrupting the public ... like this March 2010 report from Philadelphia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4WOYMWp29g ====== Here is site that rates the Top 50 Flash Mobs - http://pulse2.com/2010/02/01/the-top-50-most-epic-flash-mobs-youtube-videos/ So there you have it ... This is by far the best footage I have ever seen of the launch details . My college major was geared to enable me to design the shape of the supersonic nozzles on the shuttle and launch vehicle , but unfortunately , I graduated the summer that we put a man on the moon , so the programs were scaled back drastically . By the time I had my post-grad work done , there were no jobs in this sector for new hires , so I ended up being recruited into the nuclear field and spent my entire career helping assure safe operation of nuclear power plants in different parts of the world, instead of my chosen field . I now live about an hour from the launch pad , and whenever possible I go over to Titusville to watch liftoff live . It is still a huge thrill . Unless you have experienced it live , there is no way to describe the sensations of sound and visceral vibration , as well as the visual thrill of seeing the vehicle disappear into the heavens , still visible as it nears Africa . The last two shuttle launches are scheduled for late winter ( mid-Feb. for Discovery and later for the last ever shuttle launch ( Endeavor ) , unless the program has a major revision to fund another launch , which is unlikely .) If anyone from NPMUG is interested in seeing one of these last two launches live , contact me and I will host them to a great spot to watch . Saying this year's unveiling of the iPad "capped the most remarkable comeback in modern business history," the FT noted Apple's Jobs-led bounce-back from its near demise in the '90s, as well as the visionary leader's perseverance through his recent struggles with cancer. In terms of Silicon Valley lore, the publication said, Jobs now shares the stage with no one. "Long-time nemesis Bill Gates may be richer and, at his peak, arguably exerted greater sway, thanks to his monopoly over the world's PC software," the FT said in a profile of Jobs earlier this week. "But the Microsoft co-founder has left the stage to devote his life and fortune to good works. It is Mr. Jobs who now holds the spotlight." Despite a slip or two, Jobs has, indeed, enjoyed a fine year. Upon its release, the iPad leaped into consumers' hands--and the culture's consciousness--smashing, by some accounts, all previous records of consumer-electronics adoption and threatening to make the PC a thing of the past. And speaking of Mr. Gates, Apple passed Microsoft in overall market capitalization this summer, no doubt a sweet feeling, considering the Redmond giant's perceived rip-off, lo all those years ago, of the Mac OS in its Windows operating system (remember those bumper stickers that read "Windows '95 = Mac '84"?). The icing on the iCake for 2010 was the realization of a personal dream for Jobs, the featuring of The Beatles on iTunes. True, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg nabbed the Person of the Year nod from Time, but that magazine is old news for Jobs, who has graced its cover no less than seven times. Still, the year was not without its sore spots, the most remarkable being the bizarre loss of an iPhone prototype and its subsequent appearance on a gadget blog, and Jobs and Company's uncharacteristically ham-fisted handling of public relations during the iPhone 4 antenna-gate kerfuffle. Jobs' eventual public handling of the iPhone prototype mess was much more like him: Officially introducing the by-then anything-but-secret device later in the year, he cracked up the audience by quipping, "Stop me if you've already seen this," a classic example of the charisma that's helped make Jobs a legend. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The mounds of trash in Central America's largest open-air landfill appear to be alive. Men, women and children sift through the garbage with hooked poles, searching for food, clothing ? anything salvageable, including copper, aluminum or plastic. Every day, an army of trucks hauls 12,000 tons of garbage into La Chureca, this sprawling dump on the edge of the capital. And every day, the 2,200 Managuans who live here ? their faces wrapped in T-shirts or bandanas to guard against the stench ? stab at the ever-shifting piles as they pour out onto the compacted ground. Trash burns constantly. Thick plumes of smoke cast the landfill in a yellow hue. Feral dogs, horses and cattle graze among the slop and debris. Vultures circle above, periodically dropping from the sky to tear open plastic bags and root for food. ?All my life, I heard about La Chureca,? said Edgar Largaespada, a Managua native and operations manager for innerCHANGE Associates International, a humanitarian group that specializes in training, consulting and project management. ------Clip ------------ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Let express my personal thanks to everyone involved at every level. This concludes our fourth year of our wonderful relationship with Goodwill. We joined them in March 2007 as we began to doubt our abilities to continue our advocation of rehabilitating Macintoshes, let alone grow the operation. Their generous offer of space and spare parts resources, as well as access to the hundreds of Macintoshes donated to them, has allowed to do what we had never dreamed. We're now in our third Goodwill work space, awaiting word of when will will move to our fourth space at Goodwill's new Lawrenceville campus. All monies from Goodwill's sale of our efforts directly benefit Goodwill and it's programs. This past year, we refurbished 516 Macintoshes with a total approximate value of $72,585.00. The weight of our refurbished Macs was 18,732.88 pounds. We de-manufactured 480 Macintoshes with a total weight of 16,814.4 pounds. Our totals have gone down as we've worked through the three years accumulated inventory from school districts and individuals. We now basically are turning around what comes in the door. In comparison, in 2009 we refurbished 680 Macintoshes with total approximate value of $107,048.99. 2009 was the first year we assumed de-manufacturing responsibilities for Macs, and de-manufactured 964 Macs, monitors and accessories. The weight was 14,542.25 pounds. For perspective, we refurbished 595 Macs in 2008, and 450 Macs in 2007. As our all-time total is 2,786, you can see our efforts at Goodwill account for just over 80 percent of what we done in nine years. We'll have our first workday of 2011 on Friday, January 7. Our current address in 2600 East Carson St. on Pittsburgh's South Side. The sign on the door says Elderberry Junction, but we're the only ones there. We check in around 8:30 a.m., and leave by 3:00 p.m. sharp. If you have any questions, feel free to email or call. We hope to see you there.... Robert A.
