[NPMUG] Snow Leopard and Mac MS Office 2008 Freezes?

This past weekend, I upgraded to Snow Leopard -- no particular reason  
why other than it was cheap and I was in the Shadyside store and,  
well, no real reason other than it was the latest and greatest.  I  
also purchased and installed MS Office Mac 2008.  Don't ask.

Here is the issue -- I have encountered random freezes of the system.   
While surfing, while creating docs in Word, when I get up in the AM  
and come to the computer -- the little wheel is spinning.   
Fortunately, in every case, when I have forced the machine to shut  
down then restarted the machine has recovered files.  So far.

Is this a common issue?  I did standard upgrades and installs so . . .  
I would not expect anything crazy.  Did the software updates for  
everything.

Any comments or suggestions?
