Do you happen to have another email account enabled on the phone? The "new
emails" number is a total of new email for all accounts enabled.

You can check in "Settings" // "Mail, Contacts, Calendars". It will say
"Mail" if enabled or "Inactive" if disabled. You can enable or disable an
account by selecting it on this screen and then toggling the top field
"Account" "on" or "off".
