Neither AppleWorks 6 or Word 2004 can open .docx files natively.

The good news is that TextEdit can! Simply drag and drop your Word doc
onto TextEdit (located inside your Applications folder) and it will
automatically open it. TextEdit can also save back into native Word
format (both .doc and .docx) via the Save As menu.

Incidentally, Pages (part of our iWork '09 suite) can also open and save
all versions of Word, for both Mac and PC. (And Keynote does the same
for PowerPoint files and Numbers does the same for Excel, of course.)
Pages was actually the first app for the Mac that could open .docx
files, even before Microsoft updated Office for the Mac.

Good luck, have fun!
