I've got a silver 15" G4 Powerbook, and a desktop PC, that work but that I do not use often anymore and due to the circumstances of the move I'm about to make, am unable to take with me. I hope that it is alright to send this out to the list, I wasn't quite sure what the protocol was on this but wanted to offer them to the group first. The Powerbook is the 1.5GHz model. It has 1GB of RAM, airport, 75GB hard drive. The battery still works, though it's older so of course it does not last as long. I can't provide a terribly accurate estimate of how long it would last as normally I've used the computer in places where I've been able to plug it in, but the last time I ran it from battery I had it running for over an hour and the battery was still not drained when I was finished and plugged it back in. The case of course shows normal wear. The only real damage to the casing is in the back left corner, it has a dent (not sure what happened here, it was like this when I purchased it used a couple of years ago), but it does not effect any functionality. Besides that, the only issue with it is the usual problem with the power input board where the connector needs to sometimes be twisted for it to connect and light up to accept a charge. It runs fine from the adapter and charges quickly as well. This can be fixed by replacing the DC in board, however I haven't had the time to tackle the project myself. Last I looked they were running bout $80 online. I have a fresh and up to date install of 10.5 running on it now. Asking $400 for the computer, but I'm more than willing to listen to other offers, I haven't had very much time to research where the prices are for these lately. As for the desktop, it's a 3.0GHz P4 with HT (one of the last models before the core solo/duo CPU line), has 1GB of DDR, 75GB hard drive, nVidia GeForce 6800GT graphics card (256MB of memory on that), and a pretty heavy duty case (and heavy). This computer was my gaming rig for quite some time. The hardware is compatible with both XP and Vista, though I do not have Vista to provide with it, it currently runs XP, though I have had Vista installed before to ensure that everything works properly. I have a ViewSonic LCD display that I can include as well if desired. It is a 1930wb (19" I believe) wide screen display and in good working condition. I'm asking $250 for the system + display but again am happy to listen to offers. I'm currently located on Mt. Washington and would provide directions for buyers, but am also willing and able to meet up anywhere in the Pittsburgh area. Please also be aware that the desktop is very heavy. I'd be happy to deliver personally in the area as well, particularly for the desktop, if you are unable to lift or carry heavier items (or just if you prefer not to go out, haha). Feel free to email if you have any questions or are interested, I am presently available both during the day and also the evening. Thanks, and take care all. :) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If left unpatched the security holes could be exploited by hackers who could create a booby-trapped movie or audio file, programmed to execute malicious code on computers. More information about the vulnerabilities in QuickTime can be found on Apple's website. Curiously, MacWorld is reporting that one of the QuickTime bugs was partially revealed in a book, "The Mac Hacker's Handbook" by Charlie Miller and Dino Dai Zovi, published in March. In addition to the QuickTime update, Apple has released iTunes 8.2, which addresses a stack buffer overflow which could allow hackers to run code of their choosing on your computer if you clicked on a specially-crafted itms: link. It's worth pointing out that the updates for iTunes and QuickTime are not just for Mac users, but also for PC owners running Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later. Whatever your operating system, it's essential that you keep on top of the latest security patches. Don't dilly-dally - get patched today. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Neither AppleWorks 6 or Word 2004 can open .docx files natively. The good news is that TextEdit can! Simply drag and drop your Word doc onto TextEdit (located inside your Applications folder) and it will automatically open it. TextEdit can also save back into native Word format (both .doc and .docx) via the Save As menu. Incidentally, Pages (part of our iWork '09 suite) can also open and save all versions of Word, for both Mac and PC. (And Keynote does the same for PowerPoint files and Numbers does the same for Excel, of course.) Pages was actually the first app for the Mac that could open .docx files, even before Microsoft updated Office for the Mac. I am mortified to report that I can't read our database correctly with my general-purpose trifocal glasses. My bulletin earlier today announcing our 2,000 refurbished Mac was premature. We hit 1,900, not 2,000, this morning. We had a pretty productive day, even with imaging with just two external FireWire drives. 22 more refurbished Macs have been added to our database, for a new all-time total of 1,917. Nine additional Macs were de-manufactured for recycling. 12 of the Macs today were the OS 9.2.2 tray-load CD models, so the Goodwill ComputerWorks store now has an adequate stock of this model for the foreseeable future. We also produced a Leopard-capable 1.25 ghz G4 eMac, which is now in the store for sale. Our 2,000th Mac is in sight, and we'll probably get there within four weeks at our current production rate. Now we have time to order a cake and get an extra set of computer glasses to keep at the CRC... We'll have another workday next Friday, June 12. As a gentle reminder, please note Goodwill has finally re-instituted the security procedures they were using in the Lawrenceville facility before the CRC moved to the South Side. Security cameras have been activated, and the metal detector at the exit has been switched on and staffed. Entry is only from the South 26th St. entrance. We cannot enter the ComputerWorks Store and go through the back door as we used to. We are asked to stop at the reception desk at the main lobby to sign in to get a volunteer badge, then sign in to the log book at the CRC entrance at the metal detector. The log book now has a separate tab section just for our members to sign in and out. We followed these procedures when we were in the Lawrenceville building, and it's taken Goodwill some time to re-install all the devices to cover the area with video surveillance. These measures are to make sure data on disk drives does not get out of the building before the drives can be securely erased or destroyed. Goodwill is serious about this, as everyone should be. Any incident of data from the drives they are entrusted to wipe or destroy getting out would destroy the credibility of their operation, and lead to people sending computers elsewhere for recycling. So please, check in. It takes two minutes, and we're not in any hurry. Hope to see you there! Robert A. Option 1: Upgrade to MS Office 2008. The 2008 Mac product, (and 2007 Office for PC), introduced new file formats in Office programs based on XML. The older 2004 and Office X versions cannot read the XML-based files. Since this problem will only expand over time, as more and more users around the world migrate to Office PC 2007 and Office Mac 2008, you will eventually need the upgraded products to be compatible. Plus, the current software versions add a few new features, especially in Entourage, that are worth the price. Until you can justify the upgrade price, (Office Student and Home is only $149 for three licenses), go here: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx And look around for the "Microsoft Open XML Converter for Macintosh v1.0.2." This is a free program created by Microsoft that allows you to drag and drop .docx, .xlsx or .pptx files, (Word, Excel and Powerpoint ) and it instantly converts them to good old 2004-compatible files. Again, it's free. No need to use Pages, TextEdit re-saves or anything more exotic. And another thought, if and when you upgrade to Office 2008 for Mac, you might want to consider opening each program, Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and changing the default SAVE file format preference to the older, non-XML formats. In Word and Powerpoint, the option is found in the SAVE preferences. In Excel, it's found in the COMPATIBILITY preferences. That will make life easier for others who haven't yet upgraded. Message-ID: <5F168138-D69C-417E-A88F-9779453640F9@DAVESEVICK.COM> Ars at WWDC: Keynote expectations and coverage preview What do you expect out of Monday's WWDC 2009 keynote? We summarize the rumors and speculation about Snow Leopard, the next-gen iPhone, iPhone OS 3.0, and the announcements that might come out of AT&T. Be sure to tune in for our live coverage, too. By Jacqui Cheng | Last updated June 7, 2009 8:00 PM CT WWDC 2009 is upon us, and the Ars Technica crew is on the ground, ready to bring you the latest on this week's announcements. The keynote is scheduled for Monday morning at 10am Pacific Time, led by Phil Schiller and Apple's team of executives. As usual, Ars will be doing live keynote coverage during the event, so be sure to load up the aforelinked page before the show starts to get in on the goings-on. What will be announced at the keynote? Apple has already said that it plans to give developers a final Developer Preview release of Mac OS X 10.6, code named Snow Leopard, during the conference, so we can expect to get a more in-depth look at it during the keynote. By most developer accounts, however, Snow Leopard isn't expected to actually be released this summer?instead, most people familiar with the operating system expect a preview at WWDC and a final release date in the fall. Most of you reading this, however, are undoubtedly waiting to hear about the yet-to-be-announced iPhone update. Apple is expected to announce a release date for iPhone OS 3.0, which the company previewed to us in March. There's no doubt that the updated version of the mobile OS will bring more features and functionality to all iPhone users, but new iPhone hardware is all but guaranteed to be in the pipeline as well. In March, we found evidence of new hardware in the works, though the next flagship iPhone is probably going to look quite similar to the current iPhone 3G. The specs, however, are supposedly going to bring us more processing power, RAM, and storage space (good news for those of you with big iTunes libraries). Most reasonable Apple-watchers (ourselves included) don't expect the hardware to be available until later this month or July, though. There are a couple announcements that may come out of AT&T tomorrow as well, depending on how far along the carrier is in preparing its network. Tethering support surfaced earlier this year in betas of iPhone OS 3.0, indicating that Apple and AT&T may have finally hammered something out that will allow users to make use of the iPhone's data connection on their laptops. In fact, several developers confirmed that tethering over USB works?it's just a matter of when this feature will be announced, not if. AT&T may also announce cheaper, tiered data plans for the iPhone sometime soon, though recent comments from AT&T execs indicate that such a plan is still in the works and not yet in the final stages. Finally, there's the slightly crazier group of rumors that includes things like an iPhone light/nano (rumored since before the original iPhone was even released) and a possible "media pad." The last we heard about these possible devices, Apple was said to be in talks with Verizon to launch them, so there's no telling whether we'll hear anything about them this week or at a later date, if ever. Outside of the keynote, we here at Ars plan to bring you some glimpses into what the developer community is excited about in Snow Leopard, iPhone OS 3.0, new hardware, and whatever else may pop up. You can follow all the goings-on at Infinite Loop or at our special WWDC-only page. Coaches don't grow playoff beards, but they aren't immune to sports voodoo. For Pittsburgh Penguins Coach Dan Bylsma, it manifests itself at a Qdoba Mexican Grille located three blocks away from Mellon Arena; home of the Ancho Chile Pork BBQ Burrito, which Bylsma consumes before most Penguins home games. It's a superstition with results: Qdoba franchise owner Chad Brooks believes Bylsma is 20-1 when eating his lucky burrito. He's expected in for a bite on Tuesday before Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, with the Penguins needing a win over the Detroit Red Wings to stave off elimination. "If we win tonight, we're going to find some way, whether it's by ambulance or helicopter, to get a burrito up to Detroit [for Game 7] on Friday," said Brooks. In a short time, a quiet coach's ritual has become a Steel City sensation. Bylsma replaced Michel Therrien as Penguins head coach on Feb. 15. "As soon as he became coach, he started coming on game day," said Brooks. The Penguins found startling success with their rookie NHL coach, going 18-3-4 the rest of the season. One day, Bylsma mentioned to the manager of the Grant Street store that he had never lost when he's had his game-day burrito: The Ancho Chile Pork BBQ Burrito, made with a mix of hot and mild salsa plus cheese. "I always said I don't have superstitions. I just like to do the same thing every day," Bylsma said last week to WTAE Channel 4 in Pittsburgh. "When you get into a routine, you feel comfortable and it gets you in the right spot for a game. When you do something and you get a win, you usually duplicate it again." It was in the playoffs when his ritual became big news. The Penguins were playing the Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference semifinals, and the NHL scheduled back-to-back games in the two cities on a Friday and Saturday. Bylsma came into the Pittsburgh Qdoba on that Friday and purchased two burritos -- eating one at the store and "packing the other one on ice to take to D.C.," according to Brooks. The coach ate the burrito in the nation's capital, and the Penguins won on both Friday and Saturday nights. "At that point I said, 'Oh crap, this is for real.' He's not playing around. This is something he really believes in." Brooks recalled. That led to a Facebook group being created in honor of the Bylsma Burrito, which has well over 1,200 followers. One radio station got wind of the group, then two more; soon, Bylsma was being greeted by television cameras when he entered his local Qdoba for lunch on a game day. "After the news specials, the BBQ burrito has gotten kind of popular," said Jake Nelson, who works at the Qdoba near Mellon. The eatery held a rally before Game 4 of the Final last week, decking the store out in Penguins gear and handing out mini-burritos inspired by the coach's choice. With Bylsma coming back to coach next season win or lose, Brooks said he's petitioning corporate to have some sort of signage in his restaurant indicating what the official Bylsma Burrito contains. The relationship could go further than that: While Carissa McCabe of Qdoba corporate relations said the chain eatery doesn't traffic in celebrity spokespeople, she indicated that local sponsorships for franchises are a possibility. Could Dan Bylsma become the face of burritos in Pittsburgh? It's something Brooks would like to explore. For now, he's just hoping the ritual holds for another home game ... and, perhaps, to get the chance to celebrate the Bylsma Burrito at a victory parade should the Penguins rally for the Cup. Although there is only a tiny amount of Mac malware compared to Windows viruses, that's going to be little consolation if your gorgeous new MacBook gets infected. And sadly we know that many Mac users still believe they are somehow magically immune from attacks. As we've demonstrated before, and as we'll no doubt explain again, the Mac malware threat is real. Hackers are deliberately planting malicious code on websites, and using social engineering tricks to fool you into installing it onto your computer. In the following video, which demonstrates one of today's new pieces of Mac malware, a video promising you hardcore pornographic videos pops up a message demanding that you install an ActiveX component to view more. Of course, if you do agree to install the program (it is quite insistent) you actually end up installing a Trojan horse, which effectively hands your computer over to whatever takes the whim of a remote hacker. Is it safe to surf for porn on an Apple Mac? from SophosLabs on Vimeo. (Also available on YouTube) You see, I've got a theory that although many people are undoubtedly buying Apple computers because they're beautifully designed and well- marketed, there will also be some people who have dumped Windows because they are fed up with all of the spyware, pop-ups and virus attacks. Indeed, some of the people who may well have suffered a lot from those kind of attacks in the past may be exactly the same kind of folk who visit the grubbier areas of the internet in the wee small hours of the morning. And they may feel that one of the side benefits of switching to a Mac is that they now don't have to worry about all of those nasty things while they're err.. watching nasty things. But if they think they are immune from attacks they're making a mistake. We're seeing more attacks against Mac users all the time, with hackers planting bear-traps that work out if you're visiting their page on a Windows or Mac computer, and deliver the appropriate malicious payload accordingly. Interestingly, the discover of two new examples of Mac malware on the same day has happened just after Apple has shown off some of the new features of Snow Leopard, the next version of its Mac OS X operating system in San Francisco. And after the debacle of last year when Apple was seen to be recommending its users run anti-virus software, only to quickly withdraw the advice, Apple has devoted a page to the security features of Snow Leopard. And what do we find on that page? The following advice: The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box. However, since no system can be 100 percent immune from every threat, antivirus software may offer additional protection. "May offer additional protection?". Hmm.. Seeing as the attack mentioned above is not taking advantage of any OS vulnerabilities and just exploiting human weakness, I think Apple would be wise to change that "may" to a "will definitely". -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I regret to interrupt your enjoyment of the Penguins' Stanley Cup championship to bring you this update :-) We managed to get a second SmartDisk FireLite external hard drive prepared to help us image our Macs until we get our server issue resolved. My wife will NEVER miss her backup drive... We kicked into gear after lunch and managed to refurbish 11 Macs to bring our all-time total to 1,928. We re-imaged a store return, and de- manufactured three iMacs. There is now a dual 1.0 ghz and a dual 867 mhz Mirror Drive Door G4 Towers capable of running OS X.5 Leopard in the Goodwill ComputerWorks store. We'll have another workday next Friday, June 19. Robert A. This was sort of odd, since I had run the program many times since the software update of June 4th bringing the program to version 8.0.3, but what the heck. I clicked on upgrade and the program crashed displaying one of the wonderfully unclear error screens of hex numbers. After trying all the usual things like rebooting, resetting the PRAM and saying 'Candyman' three times in front of a mirror, I sheepishly gave up and called Apple. It turned out that this has been happening to many people. Up until two days ago, Apple had been capturing reports to find the source. I was told that they stopped capturing reports when they numbered around 3,000. What Apple found was a bug in the 8.0.3 updater, and apparently the bug could bite just about anytime since it didn't necessarily rear its head directly after the update. The bug, in various incarnations with various solutions, is to be cursorily found in the support forums, but here is the authorized Apple fix: Hold down the option key as you boot iPhoto and you'll see a screen like the one displayed here. Just choose your library (there should only be one) and iPhoto will boot normally. Problem solved! As of now the problem hasn't resurfaced for me, and according to Apple tech support, it shouldn't. This bug will be squashed in a future iPhoto update but for now it's easy to get around. http://www.tuaw.com/2009/06/13/iphoto-8-0-3-updater-bug-bites-many/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... To keep what's left of her sanity, she has a separate folder for each of the properties that she's working on. So far so good. The problem occurs when a deal is completed. She then uses the webmail interface on her laptop to delete that property's sub-folder. On the laptop side all works well: the messages and their containing subfolder go away. But on her iPhone go, but messages go away BUT the containing folder does not get deleted. So she has a whole bunch of empty folders clogging up her iPhone folder list. We've browsed around the Mail application on her iPhone, but no "delete folder" function can be found. (So far.) Any thoughts or suggestions out there? Anybody else have this problem? Topic Late-Breakers Story Options Mail Story to a Friend Late-Breakers Monday, June 15 2009 @ 03:36 PM PDT Apple releases Java update addressing critical vulnerability Apple has released an update for Java which addresses the recently announced vulnerability that has apparently been a long-standing bug in Java for OS X. The bug allowed for code and applications to be run as the current user, which could be dangerous if you were logged in as an adminstrator. We discussed the problem and workarounds in our past article on the issue, but the current updates from Apple should address it completely and prevent the vulnerability from running. After applying the update, we tested the problem with the proof-of-concept java applet that we referenced in our initial article on the issue, and the applet isnt working anymore which indicates the problem has been fixed. The updates are available via Software Update, and also from Apple's downloads page for both Tiger and Leopard users: Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 Information about this update can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3581 Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 9 Information about this update can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3593 The update does not require a restart, but will require you to quit your Web browser and relaunch it for changes to take effect. While it's been a long time coming, we're glad Apple has tackled this problem. People who have disabled Java in their Web browsers can now re-enable it again after applying this update. I run an iPhone Application and Web 2.0 Development Company, called WidgetBuddies, based in Carlsbad, CA and we focus on building software for the iPhone, Facebook Applications, and Social Network Sites. Our Offer to Your Group We know that Apple users are also fans of the iPhone and we believe that many of them may want to have their own ideas developed into an iPhone Application. As such, we wanted to reach out to your group to make the following offer to your users: If any user from your group purchases an iPhone application development project from WidgetBuddies, we will donate 10% of the proceeds to your group. This is a great way for your membership to support their group. This could literally amount to hundreds of dollars per every user that creates an application with us that would be donated to your group. All you would need to do is send out a message on our behalf to your membership base with this offer, or present it on your website. Please see my contact information below for us to discuss this opportunity further, or please feel free to pass on our offer on iPhone Application Development to your user group. If you come across any iPhone Application or Web programming projects, internally or amongst your friends & social network, please connect/ email me. MacBook Pro laptop line. Most of the time, when these sorts of things get announced, I just nod my head, acknowledge the new release and move on. I'm not buying laptops all the time, so this stuff doesn't affect me. However, in the last two laptop releases Apple is starting to reveal a trend which is very troubling to me as someone who uses Mac gear to edit audio and video -- they are taking away the ports I need to connect my stuff. This began with the laptop update prior to the most recent one with the removal of FireWire 400 ports. Now, in itself, this isn't a bad thing. FireWire 400 is slow, with a limited cable length. The problem was that they didn't replace the port with a second FireWire 800 port. This means that I can't connect a camera and a second hard drive to my computer without purchasing a FireWire hub. And a hub always runs at the speed of the slowest device connected to it. As well, there are legions of problems with editing video on a single hard drive, unless you are resigned to only editing DV or HDV. ProRes certainly can't be edited on a single-drive system. Nor can any audio projects with more than a few tracks. Nor can many other HD video formats. Then, in the latest laptop release for both the 13? and the 15? laptop, Apple removed the high-speed Express 34 card and replaced it with the much, Much, MUCH! slower SD card port. The SD card ports runs, according to Apple, at a MAXIMUM of 30% of the speed of an Express 34 card. How can Apple call a laptop a PROFESSIONAL system when it has fewer ports and the ports it has are slower? They create computers with great software, blindingly fast CPUs, great graphics cards, then reduce the ways to connect external gear! This is foolish and short-sighted. Yes, Apple needs lower cost systems to meet the needs of the broader market. But, they also need systems that meet the needs of video and audio professionals. It makes no sense to buy a system that - out of the box - is inadequate for day-to-day video production. Yet Apple describes this as their "Pro" line of laptops. Apple would say that they have the 17? laptop. True, but disingenuous. The 17? is too big to easily travel with, has a screen resolution that exceeds most video projectors which makes it totally impractical for training, and costs more than the 15? which, up until the latest releases, met our needs for ports and speeds. Apple might also counter saying that they offer the fully expandable Mac Pro line of computers. While true, this misses the whole point of having a PORTABLE computer for video editing in the field. If you feel that Apple is short-changing its professional market, feel free to share this - or write your own - or contact Apple. For me, though I need a new laptop, none of the current models are attractive for video editing. I'm going to hold off buying until Apple releases a system I can use or I'll just buy an older MacBook Pro - used. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... However, 3G owners were upset that they were not offered the same discounts as new customers or those who had not fulfilled their two-year contracts. Well, good news for those 3G owners who are wanting to upgrade to the 3G S. AT&T listened to your complaints and published an open letter and YouTube video explaining that current 3G customers may be given much better upgrade pricing when the 3G S launches. From the open letter: "Beginning June 19, iPhone 3G customers [who are] eligible for an upgrade in July, August, or September will get our best upgrade price of $199 (16 GB) and $299 (32 GB)." This is definitely great news for some 3G owners, as it bumps up the date when they can upgrade for less -- however, if your discount date is past September 30, you will still have to wait to get the best pricing. Your upgrade-eligible date is based on both your contract age and your service plan; the more money you spend with AT&T every month, the sooner they will replace your phone. There is also good news for those of you who have already pre-ordered the new iPhone: if the new eligibility window affects you, AT&T will issue you a credit for the difference. Although I don't think that AT&T had to make this change in their policy, it's encouraging to know they're listening to their customers and making changes. Now that you're listening, AT&T, how about getting on the ball with MMS and tethering? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I complete my 2 year contract only 4 months later (I bought my 3G on opening day - July 11, 2008, I believe). I have no idea what is the significance of March 17, 2010. This whole upgrade policy still makes no sense to me. I would think that both Apple & AT&T would want to curry the favor of loyal customers. So....no excitement here. Move along. Many people had to wait for an opening on through the server bottlenecks during the initial release hours after 1PM yesterday. I agree with many people who thought a midnight 6-17-09 release would have been better strategy .... with a ton of night- watchers pounding servers through the wee hours of the morning. Download ( saved to file ) took about 25 minute .... and install went perfectly over about 15 minutes. Here is what I've tested and can confirm as working and not working features on my iPhone 3G 16GB with OS 3.0 : ---Working--- Copy-Paste of text, photos, vCards. Auto-Fill on Safari web pages from your own vCard and saved passwords. Landscape keyboard in Mail, Messages, Contacts, Notes, Safari, and many apps. Spotlight searches from Home page and in many apps. iTunes Store purchases of George Harrison songs. Message app forward, delete, copy-paste of text. Shake to undo and redo typing. iPod sound has a much louder range. Double Click Home button has more choices .... I chose the new Spotlight option. Recent calls shows city, state and what kind of phone. Voice memos is very cool. Before this I was calling my voicemail to dictate notes. Hyperlinks in Mail and Safari when you press-hold will give you a page of options ( copy, email, new page, etc ....) Home page jiggling apps to move will not rearrange your icons as you flip though headed for the destination spot. CalDAV with Kerio Mail Server and iCal works great ... to be able to see delegated shared calendars of other users. Screenshots with Power+Home buttons ... still works. ----Not Working Yet---- Shake to shuffle iTunes songs does not work. I don't see a setting to allow/disallow ... yet. Notes do not sync. MMS is not activated by AT&T .... they say late summer 2009. Single app Force Quit with the Power+Home buttons depressed ... still gives "slide to restart" single option for the entire phone to reboot. ================ More testing underway ..... ```````````````````````````` Dave Sevick Consulting Apple Certified Support Professional 10.5 Apple User Group Ambassador Apple Recycling in Pittsburgh Helping people use technology in Pittsburgh Western PA, WV, OH, MD ... Existing iPhone users can update their operating system via iTunes to version 3.0, and take advantage of a number of longed-for new features such as cut-and-paste, and a landscape virtual keyboard. What's most interesting to us, however, is that Apple has also included a number of important security patches inside this update, making it important for users to patch as quickly as possible. According to an advisory on Apple's website, iPhone OS 3.0 patches 46 vulnerabilities, including some that could potentially allow hackers to run malicious code on a user's iPhone if they visited a booby- trapped website or viewed a specially-crafted image file. Fortunately we haven't come across any examples of hackers creating malware to exploit these vulnerabilities so far. iPod Touch customers are also vulnerable to some of these security issues, and are being offered the update to version 3.0 of the operating system. However, unlike their iPhone-owning friends, they are required to pay $9.95 (?5.99 in the UK) for the privilege. There's no doubt that some iPod Touch users will be unhappy that they have to pay for their devices to be fixed, and it's certainly unusual for a company to charge for important security patches like this. In an ideal world Apple would make free fixes available for iPod Touch users who don't feel they need cut-and-paste and other new features, but do want to be able to use the internet securely. I have the distinct honor to have received the first dropped AT&T call from Dave Sevick's new 32 gb iPhone 3GS. I'm sure everyone else there felt the rush of sudden silence just as I did... :-) We enjoyed a productive day despite using only two FireLite SmartDisk external drives to image our Macs. We managed to refurbish 18 Macintoshes today to bring our all-time total to 1,946. We also refurbished a 17-inch CRT Apple Studio Display. On the de- manufacturing side, we stripped 15 Macs into recyclable parts, and six bad CRT Studio Displays were consigned to be shipped out for safe recycling. We'll have another workday next Friday, June 16. Robert A. AT&T in South Hills Village and in Cranberry Twp have been great to deal with over these last two years since I ditched Verizon. Do I still miss Verizon ..... YES .... .... as Bob so naggingly pointed out in his Goodwill post/jab about my dropped calls ... I do continue to have spotty coverage in certain areas. One of those just happens to be my home ! Message-ID: - From the Desk of David Pogue - ---------------------------------------- What's in Pogue's Travel Bag? Literally. By DAVID POGUE I'm always surprised at how many people seem to like reading about what hardware and software I use. Last week's "Pogue's Productivity Secrets http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/18/pogues-productivity-secrets-revealed/ " e-column, for example, got blogged and passed around far more than I would have expected. On a plane yesterday, I was flipping through an in-flight magazine and saw one of those "What's in your bag?" photo features, where they have some celebrity dump out her purse and provide little descriptions (no doubt after careful pruning and arranging by a PR person). Want me to dump out MY bag? I travel a ridiculous amount, so I've thought a lot about, and spent a lot of time refining, what I carry and how I carry it. It starts with a Timbuk2 bike-messenger bag, which I sling over my shoulder whenever I have to dash out. The inner wall is padded on both sides for a laptop; since the bag's flap flips right open, it's extremely easy for me to get to the laptop when, for example, I need to look up my frequent flyer number. I keep this bag preloaded and ready to go. In the main compartment, I carry: * Laptop power adapter. * A bag of trail mix. Can't tell you how many times that protein has saved me from collapse when days got too crazy to eat. (I have a fast metabolism.) * A couple magazines for plane reading. My favorite is Popular Photography, but I also get a bunch of computer magazines and general-interest mags. * Camera. I pack our Nikon D80 if I need the best photos, or the Canon PowerShot 880 if I'd rather save the weight. (I know, both of those have been replaced by better models. But that's what we own.) * Noise-canceling headphones (only if I'm heading out for a flight). When I reviewed these a couple years ago, I found that the Panasonic RP-HC500's sounded just about as good as the famous $300 Bose pair for less than half the price. So I bought a pair for myself. * Car inverter. If you want to charge your laptop in the car--and I always do before a flight, because the nearest airport is a 75-minute drive away--you need something called an inverter. It plugs into the cigarette lighter and provides a 3-prong power outlet. I'd had terrible results with super-cheap Radio Shack ones (they kept blowing the car's fuse, frying themselves, etc.). Finally, though, I stumbled on this awesome one from Sears: http://bit.ly/RRvQe http://bit.ly/RRvQe It's tiny, it's got a USB jack for charging an iPod/BlackBerry/iPhone simultaneously, it has its own little fan, and it has the good sense to shut itself off if it feels overloaded. (The Sears site lists it for $30, which is already a bargain, but I've seen it as low as $18 in the stores.) Some of the most interesting stuff, though, is what's in the narrow compartment on the far side of my bag: * USB PowerStick. It's a tiny universal gadget charger, looks like a flash drive, that draws its power from my laptop's USB jack. You equip it with the charging tip you need--I use it for my cellphone. Why? Because it's much smaller than my actual phone charger; it lets me leave the real charger plugged it at home; and, best of all, the PowerStick itself also stores a second charge, so I can do another recharge in the field, without the laptop. (A "fuel gauge" display on the side lets you know how full it is.) * My video dongle. Grrrr! I can't stand the way Apple laptops require an external three-inch video-adapter cable to connect a standard projector--and, worse, Apple changes it with every new model! Just ask the A/V guys who have to accommodate public speakers around the country; every one of them can tell you tales of keynote speakers who showed up without the dongle, and couldn't show their slides. (The really good the A/V guys actually own a complete set of Apple laptop dongles just for this purpose.) Anyway, I used to lose these overpriced adapters by leaving them connected at the podium. Now I put my MacBook Air's dongle right back into its bag compartment when I leave the stage. Religiously. * Ethernet adapter. Speaking of the Air: It doesn't come with an Ethernet jack. Instead, if you need an Ethernet connection (which I do about six times a year), you can connect this little white USB-to-Ethernet adapter. * iPod earbuds. I don't usually travel with an iPod, but a set of earbuds comes in handy all the time. I might want to listen to my laptop without disturbing anyone. Also, the kids in the back seat are always asking for one. * A $20 bill. Because you never know. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/25/technology/personaltech/25pogue-email.html?8cir&emc=cir .................. >> Visit David Pogue on the Web at DavidPogue.com http://www.DavidPogue.com?8cir&emc=cir .................. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Many G5 iMac owners are already aware . Apple has been performing out-of-warranty repairs .... .... but those instances are limited and you need to check directly with them in person as they look directly at your logic board. It will look something like this photo from Wikipeida http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague as you notice the "Jiffy Pop Popcorn" bulging of the capacitors. Add the collaborated stories from my colleagues here in Pittsburgh and on the Apple Consultants Listserve ( private professional discussion board ) to what I have experienced with my own clients and here is the situation you should know: ( paraphrased from an ACN member ) The China Capacitor Syndrome or Capacitor Plague, the story goes, an engineer was poached from a rival firm and the formula for the capacitor electrolyte he brought with him was lacking the vital ingredients to keep it from eating its way out of the capacitor shell in two years. Then Apple bought a *BIG* batch of those faulty capacitors and installed them in iMac G5's and eMacs which then started to display really weird display issues along with reboots and/ or kernel panics. The story goes that HP and Dell also had the same issues so I guess it truly was a *BIG* batch. It resulted in necessary extended repairs outside of warranty. (from Wikipedia) The capacitor plague (also known as bad capacitors) involved the common premature failure of certain brands of electrolytic capacitors used in various low quality electronics equipment, and particularly in motherboards, video cards, compact fluorescent lamp ballasts, LCD monitors, and power supplies of personal computers. The first flawed capacitors were seen in 1999, but most of the affected capacitors were made in the early to mid 2000s, and while news of their failures (usually after a few years of use) has forced most manufacturers to fix the defects, some bad capacitors were still being sold or integrated into designs as of early 2007.[1] An incorrect electrolyte formula within a faulty capacitor causes the production of hydrogen gas, leading to bulging or deformation of the capacitor's case, and eventual venting of the electrolyte. In rare cases, faulty capacitors have even been reported to pop or explode forcefully. Although modern manufacturing techniques normally ensure they vent safely rather than explode, manufacturers have been known to omit the key safety features that allow this. A serious quality control problem is that good and poor quality electrolytic capacitors will often have identical electrical performance when newly fitted. Only extensive accelerated life testing involving abnormally high ripple currents and high operating temperatures can identify inferior components. This contrasts strongly with most electronic components which are much less subject to spontaneous failure after assembly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There is a known issue regarding the iMac G5 and bad capacitors. Apple at one time did offer a Repair Extension program where they would repair any iMac G5 with this issue regardless of whether or not you had AppleCare. The program was valid for three years after the manufacture date of the affected iMac. The last iMac G5s were discontinued in January of 2006 so the Repair Extension Program no longer applies to any iMac G5 in the wild. We have dealt with the Apple Store on this issue many times and they are no longer repairing computers with the capacitor issue at no charge. A logic board of an iMac G5 is very expensive due to the fact that it has an integrated video card and processor like a laptop logic board. You are essentially replacing everything but the display, hard drive and optical drive. Because of this widespread problem it is also almost impossible to find a working used logic board from someone other than Apple. The part cost varies with different models but it was running about $700 - $900 to repair an iMac G5. Obviously you would be better off just buying a new machine at this point in time. I replaced my battery and now it's low again. So I have 2 questions. No, I'm not ready for a new computer. Not that I have anything against new, I just have to finish things on this one and not always be connected. 1. Where is the safest and least expensive place to purchase a battery? 2. Are the batteries actually fresh or are they no longer being made and places just try to get rid of the ones they already have? Hope my note made sense. It?s a huge win for Apple, because the state will be acquiring another 64,000 MacBook laptops, with up to 7,000 additional MacBooks possibly ordered in the coming weeks. The Maine Technology Learning Initiative (MTLI) has equipped middle schoolers in the state of Maine with MacBooks since 2002. The expansion of the program will provide MacBook laptops for students and faculty in grades 7 through 12. Negotiations to make the expansion were reported in March. Apple is providing educational software, professional development, repair, replacement and technical support, according to the Maine Department of Education. Apple won the first MTLI contract in September 2001. The company also competed for and won a second contract in 2006. http://www.macworld.com/article/141457/2009/06/maine.html?lsrc=rss_news ================ P.S. From my photo archives .... Salvage - Salvage is a tool for recovering digital camera pictures from corrupt removable media. ImageRecall - And another. ImageRecall will do it?s best to recover any photos from a corrupt or accidentally deleted card. Time Machine - The OS X Leopard backup solution. All that you require is an external hard drive, and to keep a copy of your website locally. Dropbox - I use Dropbox as a means of keeping an off-site backup of important website documents and files (though it?s also great at keeping multiple computers in sync!) SuperDuper - If you?d like to keep a bootable backup of your Mac hard drive, SuperDuper is an excellent solution. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
