This is really nothing new with Simon Malls. They will regularly do
this and force tenants to leave. I'm a Ross Park shopper and remember
when this happened to Cheryl & Co (the cookie store) in 1997. I was
not the only one upset by the departure and still feel as though they
made this move in part to move a different store (Gymboree and part of
a jewelry store) into that space. I believe they did the same thing
when longtime tenants such as Radio Shack and Ritz Camera left in
favor of the new high-end stores that have opened there recently.
My thought is that Simon is going to push for some big-name restaurant
to come and fill the space if they truly "forced out" the Roxy. They
have a famous chain at Ross Park, which they seem to want SHV to
compete against. Why not fill the vacant Boscov's with a Von Maur
while we're at it?
The reason I feel Simon is to blame for doing this is because the
problem of "forced out by big-time rent increase" was never an issue
at Ross Park until 1996-1997 when Simon took it over.
Hopefully they don't force out our Apple Store of South Hills (I doubt
they will though). However, if they do, Ross Park sure could use one...
