IBM Licenses Memory Technology From Company Tied To Woz
By Eric Savitz
Apparently, Woz does more than ride around on his Segway making commercials for auto body repair shops.
Non-volatile memory startup Fusion-io says IBM (IBM) has licensed the company’s NAND flash technology, according to Electronics Weekly. The Salt Lake City-based company lists Apple (AAPL) co-founder Steve Wozniak as chief scientist, a role he apparently serves in an advisory capacity.
IBM reportedly plans to used the technology in a solid-state storage appliance called IOPS Adapter which is targeted at reducing I/O bottlenecks in Big Blue’s System X server line.
Investors in the company include New Enterprise Associates, Dell Ventures,Sumitomo Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Update: The news seems to be causing trouble for Fusion-io rival STEC (STEC), which today is down 55 cents, or 4.5%, to $11.56.
