OK ....
I have gotten the same questions on Sophos so much over the last
month ... we need a posting on the listserve for reference:
1. Can I test drive Sophos Anti-Virus before buying?
Answer: https://secure.sophos.com/products/small-business/sophos-anti-virus/eval
is the link to filling out a form to use a 30 day trial of the Anti-
Virus software.
Once you have been emailed a temporary 30 day username/password from
the link above, you can use this quick link to my MobileMe site to
expedite the location of the Mac version of the download :
http://files.me.com/davesevick/ageamf
... this is a shortcut to the correct savosx70sa.dmg file you'll need
to download and install for a fully functional evaluation. If you
decide to buy licenses ... you just need to re-enter the true licensed
username/password info they email to you immediately on purchase ....
2. Why Sophos Anti-Virus and not other brands ?
Answer: Norton Anti-Virus for Mac was, at one time, the #1 choice for
my clients malware protection for a very long time. Even though Macs
are much less apt to get malware attacks.
In the last five years, the quality of Norton has been very, very
poor in my first hand experience, observations of others problems,
and blogging on the streets ... to the point that I and my close Apple
colleagues here in Pittsburgh have ceased to use it completely with
all clients. Removal of Norton can be difficult also .... contact me
offline and I can send you a special Norton Removal Tool if you need it.
Sophos http://www.sophos.com/ is utilized with large client installs
all over the world and respected by both Mac and PC professionals ....
but was ( and still is ) mainly marketed to business, education and
governments internationally. Recently the Apple User Group community
in Pittsburgh was granted access to the creation of new eStore model
of distribution. I worked closely with Sophos leadership and our
local Apple consultants over the last year to see where the new eStore
could best serve the community. You'll find that portal to the new
eStore on the front page of my site http://davesevick.com .... as
the decided central location.
Graham Cluley is the face of Sophos for Mac people. He maintains a
daily blog at http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/
We really had no in-house Apple advocate at Symantec with Norton Anti-
Virus. Much like David Pogue http://davidpogue.com, Graham Cluley
has a great sense of humor, skillful writing and human touch that
makes his articles readable by all people, and not too over-technical
that users are all left confused. Technical writers with a sense of
humor are hard to find and a treasure to follow, IMHO ....
3. How much does Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac cost?
Answer: The lowest purchase configuration is a 3 user serial # , one
year renewal. This comes to :
Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac , 1 year per user , 3 users ,
$45.40 for each user = TOTAL $136.20
Pricing gets better as you choose more users and more years. If you
have more than 100 users, I can refer you to the corporate folks to
talk to them more about enterprise pricing. This new eStore model is
built for small businesses.
While placing the order, there is a handy cost comparison calculator
tool built into the eStore to help you decide how many users and how
many years between renewals.
I hope that answers everyone's basic questions ... and I am more than
happy to be a resource person for this excellent software utility for
Apple computer users.
