[NPMUG] mysterious kernel panics

Greetings Everyone,

I am having kernel panics on my G5 Mac Quad tower recently. I seem to  
have it narrowed down to happening
when I have my external hard drives attached and running. My question  
is this, can they cause a kernel panic, and if
so, what can I do to fix the problem. I need these external drives for  
my business and use them almost daily.
I have run disc utility on my machine and this didn't help.
Your thoughts?
