[NPMUG] Question for the list

Hi folks,

I wanted to follow up with everyone on the list regarding the two problems I
shared recently.

First, many thanks to those of you who hit me off-line with ideas,
especially Peter Carras and Dick Henderson, who wrote me several times and
shared great ideas on my Norton/Symantec problem.

I am still working on the Windows problem, but here is what I learned on
Norton/Symantec:
* Apparently, because I am a long-time Mac user and migrated user accounts
from a PowerPc machine to Intel along the way, remnants of Norton/Symantec
programs (SystemWorks and NAV) remained ³buried² in my Library and System
folders.
* For some strange reason, while transferring my user accounts to my latest
Intel machine using FireWire (as I have done several times in the past),
some of these random elements were ³turned on² once again.
* Running Norton uninstallers DID NOT remove the random elements.
* These files WERE NOT seen by Spotlight.
* Using a Console log, I identified some of the pieces.
* Ultimately, I had to go through Library and System carefully to remove
some folders and files. I DO NOT like opening the hood of my Mac and ripping
off random pieces of the engine, but that¹s essentially what it came down to
in the end.

I will report later on my Windows conversion experience (see below).

As an aside, I think there¹s consensus on the list that the latest Jobs
announcement was not a big deal, but I must tell you I was calling Apple
support in the last few days following the announcement and have experienced
something I have never have before with regard to call volume ‹ not a long
wait time, but complete DISCONNECTION on multiple occasions. Very strange.

In any case, with all the help I got, I have to say that once again, the
value of this list and the people on it has been personally demonstrated to
me. Thanks for your help, everyone.

Paul
