[NPMUG] OS 10.4.11 Network Preferences Problem

Those using Tiger 10.4.11 who have installed the latest security
upgrade may find that upon opening 'network' from the system
preferences panel a drop down opens which says 'your network settings
have been changed by another application.'

Clicking OK closes this box, but it instantly re-opens.

The only way out is to force quit System Preferences.

The fix from apple user forums is as follows:
1) write down your network preferences, or have this data available.
2) go to Library/Preferences/System Config/preferences.plist
3) Make a copy of this file to desktop.
4) delete the file from the original location.
5) restart
6) manually re-enter your network information.

Apple should fix this problem, as re-entering all this data is not
always easy for less experienced users.

Does anyone know an easier fix?
