Message-ID: A happy night for all those wishing against the deal ....... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/microsoft_yahoo Microsoft abandons Yahoo bid, rebuffing higher sale price By MICHAEL LIEDTKE, AP Business Writer 1 hour, 12 minutes ago Microsoft Corp. has withdrawn its $42.3 billion bid to buy Yahoo Inc., scrapping an attempt to snap up the tarnished Internet icon in hopes of toppling online search and advertising leader Google Inc. The decision to walk away from the deal came Saturday after last-ditch efforts to negotiate a mutually acceptable sale price proved unsuccessful. Microsoft was willing to pay $47.5 billion, or $33 per share, up from the bid's current value of $29.40 per share, according to a letter from Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer to Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang. But Yahoo demanded at least $53 billion, or $37 per share, according to Ballmer. That would have been nearly double Yahoo's stock price of $19.18 at the time Microsoft first made its bid a little over three months ago. "Clearly a deal is not to be," Ballmer wrote. A spokeswoman for Sunnyvale-based Yahoo didn't immediately return a call seeking comment. The decision to walk away came as a surprise, given that many analysts believed Microsoft wanted to close the deal badly enough to either sweeten the offer or pursue a hostile takeover ? a risky maneuver that would have required an attempt to replace the Yahoo board that spurned rejected the bid. But Ballmer said he concluded that pursuing a so-called proxy battle was "not sensible." "Our discussions with you have led us to conclude that, in the interim, you would take steps that would make Yahoo undesirable as an acquisition," Ballmer wrote to Yang. But Yahoo hasn't necessarily faded from Microsoft's crosshairs. The software maker conceivably could renew its bid later this year if Yahoo can't bounce back from more than two years of financial lethargy. Should Yahoo's turnaround efforts flop, many analysts believe the company's stock would sink into the mid-teens and open the door for another takeover offer that would be more difficult to rebuff. For now, at least, Microsoft appears to believe it has enough internal weapons to chip away at Google's dominance of the booming Internet ad market. "We have a talented team in place and a compelling plan to grow our business through innovative new services and strategic transactions with other business partners," Ballmer said. "While Yahoo would have accelerated our strategy, I am confident that we can continue to move forward toward our goals." ___ AP Technology Writer Jessica Mintz in Seattle contributed to this report. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We recently trimmed about 2/3 of our inventory ( very reluctantly ) of "beige" Apples ... and were left with only colorful iMac G3 models and higher G4 Macs for refurbishing, de-manufacturing and recycling. Still we have too much for the South Side location of Goodwill. We had spoken with Mary Tiong of "Second Life Computer Remanufacturing" on a few occasions over the last year to find she is mainly interested in shipping large freight containers of good computers and monitors to her team of recyclers in Kuala Lampur http://www.tsitours.com/malaysia/kuala-lumpur.html .... see these photos of her shipping processes ... http://www.secondlifecomputer.com/collecting.php Due to many economic challenges locally .... and Mary's need to load another freight liner for overseas relief, we decided to provide 16 palettes of Apples computers and Apple monitors that were ready for sale at the South Side store and CRC warehouse sales .... at this critical time. She has proven to us and many others that she runs a responsible down- streaming operation and is dedicated to eliminating e-waste .... in line with environmental goals at Goodwill and Apple. So to the many of you that donated your computers: Your hard drives have been erased .... Apple software installed ... and now many many Malaysian people will grateful for our contribution to their society through Mary Tiong's efforts. We still have many on sale at the South Side store on East Carson Street ... but this major transaction deserves some press :-) on this list at least :-) So let it be known that our Apple volunteers, led by Bob Donaldson, have served people in Ambridge, Aliquippa and the Ohio Valley ..... What many people do not know or do not think to do is to look up whether or not there may be an Apple Repair Extension program to fix their computer for the specific failure they're experiencing. When your Mac dies and you are out of warranty, as a responsible consumer, often the first step would be to arm yourself with knowledge. Look up on Apple's website and discussion boards to see if the failure you have is common. In many cases (depending on how common), Apple has a Repair Extension Program that may allow you to get your machine fixed as though it were still in warranty. Apple lists all the current and past Repair Extension Programs (REPs) here: http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/ Things to know about Apple's various REP programs- 1. In each and every case, the program runs for 3 years from the original date of purchase of the machine. Service providers, when submitting the machine for repair, must often attach copies of the invoice when they submit the repairs. It's always a good idea to have your original (or copy of) invoice from your place of purchase for that reason alone. 2. In some cases, only Apple can do the repair and the machine is sent to an Apple Repair facility. In these cases, unless you ask the service provider to back up your data, you assume the risk of data loss. While Apple does the repair under the REA program, they quite often repair or replace any other component in the machine that they feel is not to functioning as it should. Sometimes, hard drives are replaced or operating systems are wiped--which means the data contained on the machine is lost. With that in mind, software and data is not covered under Apple warranty nor REP Programs, and if you cannot back up the hard drive, the service provider may ask that you pay for their services to back up your machine before dispatching the unit. 3. When units are Dispatched to Apple for repair, Apple reserves the right to decline repair in instances when third party devices and/or drives are installed. If you are to ever have the hard drive replaced in your notebook computer, keep the dead one just in case. 4. Each program lists a specific serial# range that the Repair Extension program covers. Encoded in your serial# is information such as place of manufacture, date of manufacture and machine type. Units of like configuration whose Serial#'s do not specifically fit within the range, may be similar and manufactured in the same place around the same time as a REP program machine, but will not be covered. If the exact failure and Serial# listed for the REP Program is not met, the unit is not considered to be covered. With a few exceptions (i.e. Refurbished Machines), Apple often does not list RM and YD serial#'s in the REP Programs. Usually a Call to Apple Customer Service helps to enlighten them as to the validity that the machine should be covered and usually will be covered under the applicable REP program if it meets the criteria. 5. Physical Damage- If the machine had a drop or spillage issue at any time in the past but continued to function properly, a new failure that meets REP Program requirements is not covered and the unit will not be repaired under the REP as the physical damage (which may be slight) is reason enough to void the warranty. 6. Expect delays- When a new REP program is announced, quite often people who hear about the program storm the fortress with their broken machines. In many cases, the REP program is a redesign of a part and the newly fabricated parts may ship slowly to begin with. Unfortunately, the demand for the REP part could exceed the supply of the parts. On the service side, we often inquire about the availability of parts when they are listed as backordered. If there is a high enough demand for the parts, I have seen it take up to 6 weeks! Be patient, though--we make sure to fix machines as soon as we possibly can. Lastly, as stated above, arm yourself with knowledge about your computer. Troll the Apple discussion boards when you machine starts behaving oddly. The Apple Discussion Boards are a great source of information about nagging little problems and other issues about compatibility and how to fix issues you may be encountering. -------------- next part -------------- No virus found in this outgoing message. Parking in the neighborhood is on-street in the residential neighborhood behind the building. You make have to walk a couple of blocks to the building after you find a parking place. Note the parking meters around the building and the nearby business district have 30 minute limits. There are parking garages in the business district available, but you'll have a parking fee. If you want to check the neighborhood map, you can go to Google Maps and enter 2600 East Carson St., Goodwill's address. The residential area is south of the building. Pay attention to any street cleaning signs; the City of Pittsburgh strictly enforces the no parking during street cleaning hours during the spring and summer. Entrance to the building is on the South 26th St. side. If you have your Apple Recycling t-shirt, please wear it. We'll be new to the people at the information desk, and our shirts will better identify us. After you go in the door, make a left at the information desk. Our work area is at the front of the building on the first floor. You'll be passing though part of the relocated Computer Recycling Center. Our space is near the front windows. Our task for Friday is to begin to get organized. We'll be moving our workbenches into place and re-assemble them. Hope to see you there... Robert A. Message-ID: <8FEE03C8-4465-44E8-BCBB-5D472918992F@aol.com> Greetings! Over the weekend, my son spilled a glass of water on his iBook. YIKES! Good news: As his senior research project was on the unit, I braved opening the case, extricated the HD. it is happily living in an external case (backing-up to TWO other drives)... He'll be able to use MY semi-retired 12in iBook for the presentation. Bad news: Although he unplugged & "carefully dried it off", he then plugged it back in... started and crashed. I wasn't there... he knows more now. My Question(s): As I now have a very carefully dis-assembled 14in G4 iBook, it will dry better that way (right?), how can I go about testing the other components? What is most likely "toast"? IF we can salvage the laptop... without LOTS of $$$, otherwise, "the parts store is open... ps: thank goodness for iFixit !!! I had been cautioned in the past that cracking an iBook was NOT for the faint-of-heart. Thanks! ~Peter PETER ? Last week we set up our new work area, and this week we'll begin to tackle tray-load iMacs as we await our Internet line to be installed. We need it to put our Xserve back in service to image drives on the slot-load iMacs. The store has a stock of slot-load OS X iMacs ready for sale, but no tray-load iMacs remain. Making the rounds of the computer recycling operation in the new location is a bit more difficult that at the old location. Things are split-up, and are housed in several different smaller spaces. We need to check four different places for Macs that have come for recycling, and that will take a bit longer than in the past. My regular cell phone (number below) is back in action if you need to reach me. The entrance to the building is on the 26th St. side; go past the reception desk and make your first left. That hallway leads to the main computer recycling space, and we're on the far right side of that room. Hope to see you there. Robert A. Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community is a joint project of the Presbyterian and Methodist faiths in Pittsburgh ... meant to reach out to missing gap of young adults who miss out on church.... in the heavily youth populated areas of the South Side. They also draw students from Pitt, CMU, Carlo and Duquesne .... a short trip over the river. ======= homeless ministry ======== This faith movement has grown beyond the young adult crowd and now meets the needs of all ages of people on the streets of the Pittsburgh by going directly to their homes and to people that are homeless .... every week. Each Saturday from 12:30-4:00PM Doug Stadnik , dramadifferent at htomail.com , 412-481-1787 .... gathers a group of volunteers ( like you and me ) to prepare 20-30 lunches in assembly line fashion. We will take those lunch bags to known sites of homeless. The goal of the homeless ministry, led by Doug Stadnik, is "not to go out and point out bad habits or attempt to correct them since there are plenty of people willing to do this ...." but to "meet them where they are and show them love ..." .... by justing having a small conversation, providing lunch and being a friend that will visit each week. They have a great movement of "loving people where they are ...." and "not hitting people over the head with the Bible ...." that has caught the attention of the the Wall Street Journal .... and local papers like the South Pittsburgh Reporter ======= "The Table ministry" ======== "The Table" is a community kitchen with the heart to serve the South Side community, led by Renee Greenlee, hotmetal at hotmetalbirdge.com , 412-481-4010. A group of volunteers ( like you and me ) meet each Tuesday at 4PM to prepare/reheat donated meals by the community for a 5:30PM-6:30PM serving. Cleanup usually finished by 7PM. So if you have a heart for preparing or serving meals each Tuesday .... please consider "The Table" as an opportunity. ======= computer outreach ======= Now comes our part .... the technology front .... in the upcoming weeks we will be reaching out to Jeff Eddings and Jim Walker .... Point Park University theater grads, youth pastors, co-founders of Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community ... with strategic ways to reach the local community in need of computers. FRONTLINE has learned that following the broadcast of "Bad Voodoo's War," the U.S. Army launched an investigation of Sfc. Toby Nunn and Spc. Jason Shaw. According to the Army, the investigation centered on the question of whether the men received permission from their chain of command to participate in the making of the film. Sfc. Nunn reports to FRONTLINE that the Army punished him for his participation in the film "with a letter of reprimand in my permanent record so that I cannot be promoted or reenlist." He says that "nothing illegal happened and proper protocol was followed" and that he is appealing the Army's decision to ensure that "I leave with an honorable discharge instead of a general discharge and I am trying to clear my name and record as well." Sfc. Nunn's full statement to FRONTLINE is below. He is also writing about the investigation on his blog. http://tobynunn.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=1&Itemid=54 FRONTLINE will continue to follow this story and report on it further as developments warrant. -------------------- Dear Deb and Frontline Bad Voodoo has returned to the states and have started the demobilization process and are getting back together with their families. Several of us leaders have to stay on for a few more weeks and complete some education requirements and I am trying to get my reputation reintact. I was punished for my participation in the Frontline documentary by getting a letter of reprimand in my permanent record so that I cannot be promoted or reenlist. This is a painful and hurtful piece of paper that has painted me out to be like the enemies I dedicated my life to fighting. There was an investigation into the documentary but it did not involve anyone that participated in the film. Due process was ignored and the findings of the investigation clearly do not support the punishment I have received. By all counts my career is finished and I will complete my contractual time then get out. I am ensuring that I leave with an honorable discharge instead of a general discharge and I am trying to clear my name and record as well. I apologize if I have remained distant throughout this process but I did not want the men to suffer or be distracted from their accomplishments. I have a great respect for the all of you and wish that I can work with you in the future. I might need to get into journalism now if this career is over right. Well, thank you for the opportunity to tell our story. V/R Toby Nunn -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It will be somewhat of a advanced class in setting up a local network, and Dave will be giving a step-by-step instruction as he reconnects our Apple Xserve and reinstalls our network. If you ever wanted to figure how to do this at home, now's the time to come an help connect everything. We anticipate this being done by lunchtime, and we'll be trying it out after lunch by NetBooting some Macs to image their disk drives. We're located at 2600 East Carson St. on Pittsburgh's South Side. Enter the building through the entrance on 26th St. Go past the reception desk, and make your first left. We'll be at the far right side in the big room where people are de-manufacturing computers. If you need to call, my number is below. Robert A. Donaldson radonaldson at mac.com (M) 412-477-9188
