Today, we spent our time sorting and preparing more of our Beige Mac inventory to meet its ultimate end. And fussing about that treasured favorite model from the past that's now doomed. In Scott's case, that's EVERY model... We also learned young Eric Klug's tall frame and long arms are just right for fishing out USB mice from the giant box of discarded mice. And he scored a Graphite G4 Tower and 17-inch monitor for less than $130... Our only scheduled work day next week is Friday, March 7. We normally begin about 9:00 a.m., and we leave promptly at 4:30. You're welcome to come for the day, or for less if you can't budget the time. Robert A. I'm using Toast Titanium 8 and 4x DVD-R discs. I usually get messages saying, "the disc failed to be written" or "the drive reported an error; buffer underrun." When I set up the options in Toast, I check the box that says Write Speed: Best. Someone told me that underrun means that the data isn't getting from the hard drive to the burner fast enough. There has to be a steady flow of data so the laser can put the data on the disk without waiting or having to deal with a flood of data. Even though the DVD holds up to 120 minutes of material, I usually only put about 50 minutes of material on the disc. I've tried burning DVDs using various levels of quality (in the Toast options menu). I also use the Automatic encoding, not Custom. Even though I can't seem to burn the video DVDs, I haven't had this problem when I burn data DVDs of the video clips. So, I don't think there's a problem with the DVD drive or the blank DVDs. I have a G4 iBook with Leopard 10.5.2, 1.33 GHz. Here's the info on the DVD player/burner: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825: Firmware Revision: DAND Interconnect: ATAPI Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive) Cache: 2048 KB Reads DVD: Yes CD-Write: -R, -RW DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds I'd appreciate any help with the problem. I commend this guy for looking at the total cost of ownership, not just cost of the hardware. The article highlights a very important nail on the head when the objectors had no real reason for objection. Everyone from customers to the bank had to get involved to determine if switching was the right move. It just tells you how much people have bought into the Microsoft ecosystem and how willingly they pay that exorbitant tax without question. Macs may not be right for everyone, but I bet hundreds of thousands of businesses would be shocked if they did the math." These are the issues we see daily as Mac consultants watching people switch from PC to Mac .... The cost of licensing and then supporting a PC environment can be challenged by Apple any day of the week .... here is a great example. It is great to see an article .... written in a PC computer magazine ... that so clearly chronicles the resistance of people to change ..... until they use a Mac .... and see the low cost of support. Then they see the light :-) Dave -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Excerpts include: ? Birth of the iPhone ? Apple's connection with the consumer: "It's not about pop culture, and it's not about fooling people, and it's not about convincing people that they want something they don't. We figure out what we want. And I think we're pretty good at having the right discipline to think through whether a lot of other people are going to want it, too. That's what we get paid to do. So you can't go out and ask people, you know, what the next big [thing.] There's a great quote by Henry Ford, right? People are starting to pay a little more attention. We've helped it along. We put Intel processors in and we can run PC apps alongside Mac apps. We helped it along. But I think a lot of it is people have finally started to realize that they don't have to put up with Windows - that there is an alternative. The iPhone 2.0 beta release includes both the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) as well as new enterprise features such as support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to provide secure, over-the-air push email, contacts and calendars as well as remote wipe, and the addition of Cisco IPsec VPN for encrypted access to private corporate networks. ?We?re excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community with potentially thousands of native applications for iPhone and iPod touch,? said Steve Jobs, Apple?s CEO. ?iPhone?s enterprise features combined with its revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface and advanced software architecture provide the best user experience and the most advanced software platform ever for a mobile device.? The iPhone SDK provides developers with a rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools to create innovative applications for iPhone and iPod? touch. Starting today, anyone can download the beta iPhone SDK for free and run the iPhone Simulator on their Mac?. Apple today also introduced its new iPhone Developer Program, giving developers everything they need to create native applications, and the new App Store, a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly deliver their applications to iPhone and iPod touch users. With the iPhone SDK, third party developers will be able to build native applications for the iPhone with a rich set of APIs, including programming interfaces for Core OS, Core Services, Media and Cocoa Touch technologies. The iPhone SDK will allow developers to create amazing applications that leverage the iPhone?s groundbreaking Multi- Touch? user interface, animation technology, large storage, built-in three-axis accelerometer and geographical location technology to deliver truly innovative mobile applications. Apple has licensed Exchange ActiveSync from Microsoft and is building it right into the iPhone, so that iPhone will connect out-of-the-box to Microsoft Exchange Servers 2003 and 2007 for secure over-the-air push email, contacts, calendars and global address lists. Built-in Exchange ActiveSync support also enables security features such as remote wipe, password policies and auto-discovery. The iPhone 2.0 software supports Cisco IPsec VPN to ensure the highest level of IP- based encryption available for transmission of sensitive corporate data, as well as the ability to authenticate using digital certificates or password-based, multi-factor authentication. The addition of WPA2 Enterprise with 802.1x authentication enables enterprise customers to deploy iPhone and iPod touch with the latest standards for protection of Wi-Fi networks. The iPhone 2.0 software provides a configuration utility that allows IT administrators to easily and quickly set up many iPhones, including password policies, VPN setting, installing certificates, email server settings and more. Once the configuration is defined it can be easily and securely delivered via web link or email to the user. To install, all the user has to do is authenticate with a user ID or password, download the configuration and tap install. Once installed, the user will have access to all their corporate IT services. The iPhone 2.0 software release will contain the App Store, a new application that lets users browse, search, purchase and wirelessly download third party applications directly onto their iPhone or iPod touch. The App Store enables developers to reach every iPhone and iPod touch user. Developers set the price for their applications?including free?and retain 70 percent of all sales revenues. Users can download free applications at no charge to either the user or developer, or purchase priced applications with just one click. Enterprise customers will be able to create a secure, private page on the App Store accessible only by their employees. Apple will cover all credit card, web hosting, infrastructure and DRM costs associated with offering applications on the App Store. Third party iPhone and iPod touch applications must be approved by Apple and will be available exclusively through the App Store. The iPhone SDK provides a reliable, fast and secure way to create innovative applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. In addition to the rich set of iPhone OS APIs, the iPhone SDK also provides advanced tools for creating native iPhone and iPod touch applications including: Xcode? for source code editing, project management and graphical debugging; Interface Builder with drag and drop interface creation and live preview; Instruments to monitor and optimize iPhone application performance in real time; and the iPhone Simulator to run and debug applications. During the beta iPhone SDK program, a limited number of developers will be accepted into Apple?s new iPhone Developer Program and offered the ability to get code onto iPhones for testing. The Standard Program costs $99 (US) per year and gives members an iPhone SDK and development tools; access to pre-release iPhone software; technical support; the ability to get code onto iPhones for testing; and distribution of applications via the new App Store. The Enterprise Program costs $299 (US) per year. In addition to these new iPhone network and security features, the beta iPhone 2.0 software provides several new Mail features such as the ability to view PowerPoint attachments, in addition to Word and Excel, as well as the ability to mass delete and move email messages. Pricing & Availability Apple plans to release the final iPhone 2.0 software, including the iPhone SDK and new enterprise features, as a free software update for all iPhone customers by the end of June. Third party applications created for the iPhone will also run on the iPod touch, and iPod touch users will be required to purchase a software update to run these applications. The free beta iPhone SDK is available immediately worldwide and can be downloaded at developer.apple.com/iphone/program. The iPhone Developer Program will initially be available in the US and will expand to other countries in the coming months. Apple is accepting applications beginning today from enterprise customers who would like to join the private iPhone Enterprise Beta Program (www.apple.com/iphone/enterprise) . Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone. The unfortunate problems with my Apple TV device. 2. The great support from Apple as I worked through the issues. ====== 1. The Short Version of My AppleTV Issues March 2007 - I purchased the original AppleTV running version 1.0 software .... it works like a charm. I use it often. June 2007 - I download software version 1.1 for my AppleTV .... everything continues to work fine. January 2008 - Apple announces Movie Rentals at MacWorld San Francisco. Yeah ! February 12 2008 - AppleTV 2 has not shipped yet, but software version 2.0 is downloadable and installable on your current AppleTV !!!! ... and I do. I download my first HD movie "The Simpson's Movie" and plan to watch it in a few days, since I get 30 days to begin, 24 hrs once I start watching and it is late. February 14 2008 - I'm finally ready to sit down and watch the movie on my home theater ..... but the picture does not show on the screen ... sound is fine, yet no video. Hmmmmm ???? I research the Apple Knowledge Base and find issues of lost video ..... I tried everything I could from this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305175 to get it to work. I reboot the Apple TV and the picture and sound works .... OK ! Great. I watch several YouTube and family photos and listen to shared music and more .... but hold off on "The Simpson's Movie" for a moment .... I try to flip from watching TV ( component RGB cables ) to Apple TV ( HDMI cable ) and same issue ... video is lost. I bought all new cables .... restarted and rebooted and tried everything over the next several days .... I even go to Best Buy and test my AppleTV there .... it works , then fails, then works .... very erratic ... on different HDTVs with HDMI and Component RGB. Best Buy staff in Cranberry Twp. was very accommodating. ====fast forward to Feb 18, 2008==== February 18 2008 Several days of trying to get video to stay on .. no go ... sound is fine, yet no video. I was willing to constantly reboot the Apple TV to get video to come back ( but I know this is not the ultimate solution ) .... but switch to another source and go back and all video lost. Ughhhhhhh :-( I go to the Apple Store in South Hills Village on Feb 18 ..... and explain my troubles ... thinking "maybe I have a bad unit ......" and I'm not going crazy. 2. Apple comes through for me ..... one step at a time South Hills Village geniuses over the next several days : - provide a swap for a refurbished unit ( 40 GB ) since I was still under the 1 year warranty. Worked great with 1.0 software, update to 2.0 ... same issues. - sold me a new 160GB unit ( crediting me for the difference in cost of the upgrade ) . Worked great with 1.0 software, update to 2.0 ... same issues. - sold me a new Apple TV2 40GB. software 2.0 installed already ... same issues. I go back to Best Buy buy a low cost Magnavox 26" HDTV and it works fine .... with the 160 original AppleTV and new AppleTV2 ... both running 2.0 software. Finally I resign to the fact it is my system .... not the AppleTV ..... that is most problematic ..... and that Apple reports most people do fine with AppleTV 2.0 on their HDTV units ... my particular projector is just not happy with the way video works under 2.0. In this long journey I manage to have two $4.99 HD movie rentals erased during software restores .... and the Apple iTunes Store Support online via email and over the phone ( 1-800-MY-APPLE ) eventually gets my movies reimbursed ..... every person I talk to at Apple is great. ========= Moral of the story ... you may have issues with some Apple products at times, but you can bet the Apple customer service will be great ..... and it is worth telling my story, should you travel down the same road. Message-ID: <1D3330E6-5FDF-44A3-97B8-ABC58B53349E@mac.com> My iPod -- well, my son's -- Touch has a problem that has escaped my meager efforts and Apple's considerable (it seems) attempts. His Touch freezes -- simply locks up. I took it the the Shadyside store and they confirmed the freeze believing it had something to do with hardware -- the button. So, because it was engraved, we sent it to Apple for service. It came back a few days later with the explanation that Apple was not able to duplicate the issue. Sure 'nuf, it froze minutes after we loaded the tunes again. So, crankily, I complained and sent back once again. Got a new model. Loaded with the same software (including the Jan 2008 $20 update that we'd purchased just before the issues started with the first unit). Loaded the tunes and videos (all from CD songs of our own or purchased songs/videos from iTunes Store). Bam. Froze within about 2 hours. Clearly seems to be a software/download issue on my end (I have an Intel based iMac with OS 10.whatever -- not Leopard, but, one before . . Tiger?). But, stranger, than strange, my daughter's Nano works just fine with similar tunes and videos. Likewise, we have an older iPod classic that works just fine. Can anyone out there point me in the direction of a solution -- I am stumped and so it seems is Apple (and given my hubris is whining after the first "non-fix" I figgered I'd reach out here for help before going back again). Not sure what else to do. Comments, thoughts, suggestions? Thanks to all. Today we rehabilitated 14 more iMacs to bring our all-time total of saved Macintoshes to 1,151. We also continued to "thin the herd" by retiring and stripping 25 creaky Blue & White G3 Towers. If you just happen to be running one of these models, we have a deal for you on spare video cards and CD- ROMs.... :-) Our next work session will be on Friday, March 21, when we'll be sorting and passing judgement on a couple of hundred Apple LaserWriters of all models. If you just happen to really like Apple's laser printers, and wish you had a spare, NOW is the time to raise your hand and let us know what you'd like us to save. I'd keep one for myself, but my LaserWriter Pro 600 is still working fine here at home, 16 years after I bought it. I paid $2,200 for mine new, but you can a similar model for around $25.... We need to quickly determine which ones work, and which will pass to the great recycler. We'll have three test stations with OS 9 WallStreet Powerbooks running Apple Disk Utility so we can view the printer's specific information and print a test sheet. We can increase the number of test stations if there's a good turnout. We also have three giant boxes to sort through to see if any of the contents are worth saving. The contents include cords, power supplies and accessories. We will also be disassembling one of our work benches. The network cabling has already been disconnected from this bench. For those of you who flinch at the prospect of touching the inside of a Mac, we can guarantee you won't see one Friday. We hope you can join us. It's been exactly a year since we packed up during a snowstorm in Ambridge and moved to Goodwill. We were up and running in our current location about six weeks later. Some don't look pretty and need a dose of Simple Green, and some have weak toner cartridges, but they all have test sheets attached. Here's the breakdown: ? 20 LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630. ? 6 LaserWriter 12/640 PS ? 5 LaserWriter Select ? 6 LaserWriter 4/600 ? 2 LaserWriter 4/320 ? 1 LaserWriter II Most disappointing was finding over 20 bad LaserWriter IIs. But we saved the paper trays, which you can purchase at a VERY attractive price :-) Look for these printers to show up at Goodwill in the next couple of weeks, most probably at the Computer Warehouse Sale on April 4-5. Let me know if you'd like us to save you one. Robert A. Message-ID: Just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone that helped make the three Hosanna Blitz Builds in Beaver Falls last week a great success. The community volunteer support was overwhelming with over 150 people from PA, OH, WV, MD, Wash DC and one person from CA. Church, civic, college and business groups all put there best efforts into these three simultaneous home construction projects. The weather was a challenge, but everyone set aside their discomforts and worked as a team to get the homes finished. We dedicated the homes to the families on Good Friday March 21 at 1:30PM and handed over the keys .... a truly emotional and moving ceremony like that you might see on "Extreme Home Makeover" on ABC each Sunday .... but more realistic and with less glitz .... as we built them humble, but very energy efficient two or three bedroom homes. Hosanna Industries will have several smaller rehabilitation projects coming up soon ... and another blitz build in Beaver Falls this summer. You need not be a construction expert. I will post those opportunities here ..... because many of the Apple folks on this list like to go beyond the computer support and show an interest in helping the community .... here is an opportunity to serve .... as members of our local Apple community .... For those of you new to this listserve : this past Christmas 2007 we partnered with Hosanna Industries to distribute 29 Apple 5400 and 5500 series Power Macs to low income families. Hosanna also partnered with us to build our Computer Recycling Center workbenches in Lawrenceville in May 2007. Thanks again ...... and please contact me or Amy Firek ( volunteer coordinator ) amylee at hosannaindustries.org 724-770-0262 if you want to be a part of these year round Hosanna Industries efforts to assist lower income families by repairing existing homes and building new homes. btw .... I do a lot of video work using Final Cut Pro, so I wanted a Mac with the fastest speed. However, it turns out that my version of Final Cut Pro is 4.5 HD, which doesn't run on the MacBook. When I try to open Final Cut, I get a message saying that I'm missing an AGP graphics card. I called the Apple help desk and they said I need the latest version of Final Cut - which is now version 6 (it's packaged with a bunch of other software and called Final Cut Studio 2). The upgrade is $699! In the past, Final Cut Pro upgrades cost $399, but now it looks as though I have to buy the entire package just to get Final Cut to run on my MacBook. Is there any way around this? Will Final Cut Pro version 5 run on my machine, and is there any way I can still purchase it? I know I could buy Final Cut Express at a much lower price, but I've been using Final Cut Pro since 2000 and I'm spoiled by its many capabilities. It was another day of stripping and recycling parts from more Macs than we fixed. About 25 G4 and G3 Towers were sent to their final reward as five more Macs rejoined the world of the living. Our new, all-time total is 1,158 rehabilitated Macs. For those of you who expressed interest in our rescued Apple LaserWriters, they will be hitting the sales floor at Goodwill's Computer Warehouse sale next Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5, along with the most diverse range of rehabilitated Macs ever offered at the sale. Sale hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Goodwill Computer Recycling Center is at 55 55th Street in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood, just a block off Butler St. The LaserWriters will be in three classes: ? Personal LaserWriters, using AppleTalk. If you're still in the Beige OS 9 world (and bless you if you are), you'll need a couple of LocalTalk connectors or the equivalent direct connect printer cable. These printers are supported in OS X, but you'll need a LocalTalk-to- Ethernet adapter to make everything play nice. This class will be sold for $15.00. ? LaserWriter Select, using AppleTalk and Ethernet, depending of the specific model. Same circumstances as above. The ethernet port on the ethernet-capable models requires an AAUI adapter to connect with the RJ-45 ethernet cable. This class will be sold for $20.00. ? LaserWriter Pro series, and it's later successors. The LaserWriter Pro 600 uses AppleTalk, and you'll need the LocalTalk-to-Ethernet adapter mentioned above to make it work with OS X or your network. The LaserWriter Pro 630 has the AAUI ethernet port, and the later models all have ethernet. This class will be sold for $25.00. We also have four (4) large-capacity base units for the LaserWriter Pro series. They'll be sold separately for $5.00. The amount of toner in the cartridge is unknown. Each one has a test sheet showing any toner cartridge issues, and the number of pages that have gone through the printer. Some have Sharpie writing on them. Please keep in mind all these printers date from the mid-1990s. Toner cartridges are still widely available, and they can be recharged. You can do a Google search to see what new and refilled cartridges cost. Technical specs are readily available online, and the handy free program MacTracker (available on VersionTracker.com) has a printer section with full details. The printers are currently wrapped in plastic on a pallet at the CRC for easy moving by forklift. We'd be delighted to answer requests to reserve a printer, but there's a catch: You must show up at the warehouse sale to pay for your printer. As a point of information, Goodwill get a lot of people asking that an item be held for them, and they get it taken off the shelf, only to never return. Goodwill loses sales this way. So please, if you want us to save you a printer, it's important you come to get it on April 4 or 5. Here's a brief rundown of the Mac models we anticipate that will be available. If you don't see them on the floor, ask. We may run out of display space for Macs. ? Beige PowerMac 5400/5500, 32 mb RAM, 1.0-2.0 gb hard drive, OS 9.1: $10.00. ? Beige G3 All-in-One, 384 mb RAM, 4.0 gb hard drive, OS 9.2.2: $25.00. ? Tray-load iMac, 64-128 mb RAM, 4-6 gb hard drive, OS 9.2.2: $40.00. ? Blue & White G3 Tower, with matching 17-inch Apple Studio Display and ADB keyboard, 256 mb RAM; OS 9.2.2: $80.00. ? Slot-load iMac (processors running 400-500 mhz), 10-20 gb hard drive , 384 mb RAM, OS X.3.9: $110.00. ? Slot-load iMac, 600 mhz processor, 40 gb hard drive, 384 mb RAM, OS X.3.9: $130.00. ? Graphite G4 Tower, with either 17-inch graphite Apple Studio Display, or 17-inch clear ADC Studio Display. Monitor will be your choice, depending on the particular machine's video card; 512 mb RAM, OS X.3.9: $175-$225 depending on configuration. ? G3 Series PowerBook (WallStreet), 128-160 mb RAM, 2 gb hard drive, OS 9.2.2, battery needs to be replaced for non-AC use: $25 ? Blueberry iBook 300 mhz, RAM varies, battery quality varies, with some new batteries installed, some have AirPort; OS 9.2.2: $200 and up, depending on configuration. ? One only: Indigo iBook 366 (FireWire), 320 mb RAM, 10 gb hard drive, with new battery and AirPort, OS X.3.9: $325. ? And finally, just ONE 15-inch flat-panel G4 iMac, 512 mb RAM, 60 gb hard drive, OS X.3.9. THIS MAC HAS A FLAW IN THE SCREEN: $350. As you can tell, we've been busy little bees. All told, we've got 185 Macs on the shelf ready to go. Again, if you don't see it on the floor, ask, and we'll come running. If I could offer a brief sales pitch: The OS X slot-load iMacs are an inexpensive way for a Windows user thinking about switching to a Mac to get oriented with no financial burden. Robert A. I had installed Turbo Tax previously and it began by automatically checking for and then installing updates. I then started inputting my data, forgetting that this is not a self saving program. It does so much automatically it lulls one into this false sense of security especially since it is a once a year software experience. So much for the excuses department... When I was all finished with the income side (about 2 hours later, fractional stock transactions will do that) I clicked the button to download the state. It asked me to save and the dialog box popped up. I noticed that the save as window that popped up did not show the default folder frame and buttons. I clicked the arrow to expand the window and the DF partially formed. When I clicked the recent folders button the spinning beachball of death appeared and would not go away. Bottom line, I lost all my work. Subsequently an update has been released for Default Folder (4.03) and I believe it addresses problems like this. I sent St. Clair software an email with my sad story and received a sympathetic reply. He also sends regards to all of his old NPMUG friends. Fortunately the practice cut my second time through to a minimum. Thought some may appreciate the heads up. Bottom line is save early and often...
