On my home network, I am having a shared printing problem and I am just flummoxed. The answers on the Apple support site and in the discussion forums aren?t satisfactory. Several indicate there is a shared printer problem using Airport-connected printers, and others talk exhaustively about the inability to use printers connected to other machines via USB on the network (my problem). I am going to call the 800 number on Friday, but before I did, I thought I would ask the wise minds of this group for advice. Here is the problem: 1. I am using the iBook G3 dual white 600 Mhz laptop that we used to start our business as a print server for our home network (it?s a happy semi-retirement and I get sentimental every time I see it). The iBook G3 is running 10.4.11 and worked well in its printer server role until the upgrade, with an Epson C88 inkjet and HP 7110 All-in-One cabled to it via USB. Proper drivers installed, no problems, etc. 2. All other computers on the network are either MacBook (Intel) or iBook G4. All currently running Leopard, 10.5.3 and in all other respects, working great. 3. The printers on the network are shared for the Leopard machines and keep disappearing from the Leopard machines when trying to print. They can sometimes be found and ?added? again, but often cannot be found/added/reloaded as shared printers following the Apple procedures on the web site support pages. 4. I installed a new wireless modem/router from Consolidated Communications yesterday; it is wireless as well as a wired router ? didn?t affect any other network functions and was having printer problem before this so I think it?s probably not related but I mention it just in case . . . 5. Has anyone else had this weird problem? Any suggestions? In Console, I see this in the system log every time I try to print (see my bold): Jun 5 21:36:12 MacBook [0x0-0x21021].com.microsoft.Entourage[258]: snmpInk: getHostForPrinter() could not get the host from the device URI. TIME Magazine on Google, Facebook and Apple Message-ID: http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1811814-1,00.html by By JOSH QUITTNER / SAN FRANCISCO A look at how open platforms that invite innovation by outside developers will be the real winners .... and all three companies have great strengths .... ---- clips from pages 3 - 4 ----- Why the iPhone Matters Apple's calculus is much simpler: it doesn't matter who prevails online ?Facebook, Google, both or someone else. Steve Jobs simply wants to ensure that you use his devices to get there. To that end, the new iPhone, which is expected to be announced on June 9, is "hugely significant," says Andreessen, who now presides over a company, Ning, that allows anyone to build his or her own social network. "The iPhone, a lot of people around here believe?and I think this is true?is the first real, fully formed computer that you can put in your hand," he says. "It has all the requirements it needs to be a viable platform." Matt Murphy?a venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers who oversees the $100 million iFund to seed start-ups that build great iPhone apps?goes even further. He claims that the iPhone will "absolutely be the driver of the post-PC world." Murphy points out that the kit needed by developers to build iPhone apps has been downloaded more than 200,000 times, and he estimates that about 1,000 applications will be available to consumers when the iPhone-apps store launches with the phone. "If you look at so many of the constraints that have held back the mobile ecosystem, Apple basically takes all of those away and provides an open platform, a great device and a user base that's rabid for these new kinds of applications," he says. Jobs' great skill has always been integrating cutting-edge technology and making it accessible. Flat-panel monitors, moviemaking software, wi-fi, digital-music players, touch-sensitive screens?these have all been out there over the past decade or so in ragged and unpolished ways. His genius was finding and repackaging them, making the technology work to delight the masses. Similarly, Apple's iPhone 2.0 will popularize "geo-location"?think of the satellite-based navigation systems in many cars?as a way for people to communicate wherever they are. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... See the article below. John Bauerlein How to Block Cellphone Spam By DAVID POGUE If I told you that today's e-column would change your life, would you mind that it's sort of short? The story goes like this. A few weeks ago, in my blog (nytimes.com/pogue), I wrote this: "OK, now I'm really, REALLY annoyed. Within a week, my wife and I have both started getting spam text messages on our Verizon cellphones. I know that this is nothing new, but it's new for us, and it's apparently getting worse. "According to Wikipedia, this sleazy practice is described as 'mobile spamming, SMS spam or SpaSMS, but is most frequently referred to as m-spam.' "It's actually far worse than regular e-mail spam, for three reasons. First, you generally can't delete it without opening it first. "Second, you have to pay for it. (And, of course, the senders pay nothing, since they can send text messages from a computer's e-mail program for nothing.) "Third, there's no way to stop it. You can't install an anti-SMS spam program on your cellphone. "If you're not feeling helpless and livid already, if you're not already storming your carrier and Congress, I can think of only one reason: you haven't been m-spammed yet. But your time will come." Shortly thereafter, I heard from an AT&T representative who revealed the presence of an astonishing little-known cellular feature: you can block cellular spam. "Our customers can get onto our Web site," he wrote, "and set their handset so that it receives no messages from the Internet, the origin of the vast majority of wireless spam." He also said: "Text messages sent from the Internet are addressed as follows: [Your 10-digit wireless number]@txt.att.net. "What spammers try to do, of course, is attempt to guess your number, largely by trial and error. This brings me to the second capability we offer our customers. Let's say you want to block spam, but still want to receive messages originating from the Net that you would actually find useful (airline schedules, hotel reservations, etc.). For this purpose, we let you replace your wireless number with an alias. It could be some quirky name, or whatever you like. [You share this address only with people you know.] This could disrupt the guessing game spammers play to try to discern your number and sent you their junk. "Though not perfect, our efforts have helped keep spam in the category of minor, though annoying, phenomenon. Thanks for listening." The beauty of this feature, of course, is that it blocks ONLY text messages from the Internet. Your friends, using cellphones, can still text you. As it turns out, Verizon Wireless offers these features, too. Sprint and T-Mobile don't go quite as far, but they do offer some text-spam filtering options. Here's how you find the controls for each company: * AT&T: Log in at mymessages.wireless.att.com. Under Preferences, you'll see the text-blocking and alias options. Here's also where you can block messages from specific e-mail addresses or Web sites. * Verizon Wireless: Log in at vtext.com. Under Text Messaging, click Preferences. Click Text Blocking. You're offered choices to block text messages from e-mail or from the Web. Here again, you can block specific addresses or Web sites. (Here's where you set up your aliases, too.) * Sprint: No auto-blocking is available at all, but you can block specific phone numbers and addresses. To get started, log in at www.sprint.com. On the top navigation bar, click My Online Tools. Under Communication Tools, click Text Messaging. On the Compose a Text Message page, under Text Messaging Options, click Settings & Preferences. In the text box, you can enter a phone number, email address or domain (such as Comcast.net) that you want to block. * T-Mobile: T-Mobile doesn't yet offer a "block text messages from the Internet" option. You can block all messages sent by e-mail, though, or permit only messages sent to your phone's e-mail address or alias, or create filters that block text messages containing certain phrases. It's all waiting when you log into www.t-mobile.com and click Communication Tools. As soon as I heard about all this, I went to the Verizon Wireless page for my own account and turned on the "block" options. And you know what? We haven't had a single piece of cellphone spam since. I've been having fun at WWDC and not been checking email. :-) I have a Kindle. And I love/hate it. As far as reading on it goes: its very nice. The screen is extremely easy to read for long periods of time. There's no flicker of any kind like on a monitor, and you're not staring at a lit screen, so there's no more eyestrain than reading a book. But like a book, you'll need external light to read by. And the integration with the Amazon bookstore over the built-in cellular system is fantastic. I bought and downloaded a book in seconds while sitting at the airport waiting to go to WWDC. The physical design of this device is awful, however. Its a big clunky piece of plastic. I've always been a substance-over-style engineering type, but the physical design of this thing is so bad its offensive even to me. That said, its still great to carry around a ton of books in a package the size of one book. I'm hoping there will be a version two that will be physically better, but the reading experience is fine. There's no mention from Amazon on when or if a 2nd version will be coming out, but it doesn't seem like it will happen anytime soon. I've also tried the Sony Reader device, the PRS-505. Its much nicer physically. Its smaller and has the same good screen. However the cellular connection to the Amazon bookstore makes the Kindle my choice over physically nicer Sony unit. Hope that helps. Later, McC On Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 7:25 PM, R Adams wrote: > Anyone with first hand experience and opinion of Amazon's Kindle? That's two 20 inch 2.4 Ghz each with 3GB. The bad news: I moved the original Mac from the basement, where it was wired to my Linksys WRT54GS wireless router, to the dining room upstairs. Configuring the Airport connection was not a problem. However, I do not broadcast my wireless network name and have WEP security enabled. The wireless Mac does not seem to be able to remember the connection. I have added the WEP password to the keychain, but invariably each time I have to go back to enter the network name and password, the keychain box is no longer checked. Any ideas? There's usually someone in our area from 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Goodwill is at 2600 East Carson St. on Pittsburgh's South Side. Entrance to the building is on the South 26th St. side. Go past the receptionist and turn left at the first hallway. We're on the far right side of the big room where Goodwill clients are busy sending Windows PCs to Computer Heaven. We've received many keyboards and mice along with the donation of nearly 400 Macs from the Keystone Oaks School District, and we're again in a position to set up a keyboard and mouse cleaning and testing bench. If you don't feel you want to dig about the innards of a Mac, or wipe and image its hard drive, we now have a job for you again. Hope to see you there! Robert A. At the bottom of this page is a screen shot from my laptop, showing the path to the web pages stored on the iDisk. You're web page is stored similarly on your iDisk. To fix the problem, delete the folder containing your page from your iDisk and then empty the trash. Next, go back to the iWeb program and publish. This should create a whole new folder from the information in your iWeb program. I think the problem comes from trying to update something that is corrupted inside the current folder. I remember having to do this way back when I started using the program. This screen shot looks different than yours because I am using the newer system software 10.5 and your laptop is 10.3.9. Good luck! Bruce Bruce, The picture of the finder path was very helpful. Thanks. I did as you said. Actually my trash emptied itself. Then I published again and the red lights (to be published) all turned blue. Very exciting. Only, there came back an error saying that the picture I put in with Sarah's post card didn't go through, why didn't I try going under file and using "publish all." So it did, only mine said to "publish all to. Mac" The program worked away and the home sign turned red but I thought that was because I accidently moved the photo on the home page. Then, all the red (not published) icons, that I had had when this publishing adventure began 9 days ago, returned with the message: "/web/sites/: Web/WellsWood? spring 2008/E6C9C158-38B1-11DD-80FD-000A95BC2ADE-files/DSC01252. jpg" The jpg is a picture of crab apple blossoms. I don't know what the rest means. Should I delete the file in the finder box again? Change the pictures? Never use "publish all to. Mac"? We're definitely settled into our new, smaller but AIR CONDITIONED digs at our new location on Pittsburgh's South Side. Since we re- installed our Apple Xserve two weeks ago, we're really hitting our stride cranking out our rehabilitated Macs. Did I mention it's air conditioned? Today, we finished 17 Macintoshes for the Goodwill ComputerWorks store, located just 30 yards from our workspace. We're delighted to find our smaller workspace has not effected our output. Our all-time total of refurbished Macs now stands at 1,236. It's a great time to be looking for a quality, refurbished Mac at Goodwill. RIGHT NOW at ComputerWorks (2600 East Carson St.) there are just over 20 G4 OS X eMacs, over 30 OS X slot-load CD iMacs, 15 OS 9 tray-load iMacs, 13 G4 OS X Graphite Towers, 2 OS 9 G3 Towers, 1 OS 9 WallStreet PowerBook with added wireless, and one pristine G4 Cube with a 15-inch LCD Studio Display. You can see our finished machines lined up in the window along East Carson St. We've recently received a large donation of eMacs and iMacs in excellent condition from the Keystone Oaks School District, along with many keyboards and mice. Our critical shortage of USB keyboards and mice is now temporarily over. Now that Goodwill's big move from the old CRC to the South Side is now complete, the number-crunchers are beginning to count up just what we've been doing for them since we first joined them at the end of March 2007. We hope to be able to share some numbers with you in the coming weeks. We will gather again for our normal Friday workday on June 27. We'll be taking a two-week break, pausing for the July 4 holiday, and again on July 11. We plan to resume operations on Friday, July 18. There's no coincidence with us taking off on July 11 and Apple releasing the new iPhone for sale on the same day. Honest. I know for a fact that I have a dentist appointment that day..... Robert A. Reason: Another Apple computer colleague in Canada was talking to me about doing the same thing with a listserve for his Apple community at MacWorld SanFran in January ..... considering using MailMan software for a listserve for all Apple folks ..... I told him about some of the negative and positive things about hosting a listserve. The biggest negatives are "flame wars" where people get off-topic and begin to argue publicly. That can spin out of control. The consequences are so harmful that it would necessitate me closing down the listserve ... which I can do with the click of a button online. We all went through that experience last year. However, I am very pleased to report: 1. The first person to write back to help me did so within 12 minutes of my 10:23PM post and provided me the snopes.com address and other links. 2. All posts were directly to me privately with helpful comments and links, and not one person overrode the "reply to user only" format and replied to the whole list instead. *** Except for Marty who just now posted to everyone .... it is a hoax .... :-) Thanks everyone for behaving and being so helpful ... I will be using this audit as an example for any new list member to reassure them..... -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... One member pointed out email programs like "Google Mail" may not immediately allow "reply to sender only" and just automatically "reply to all" when a reader attempts to post a response to the list. Good to know. 2. Replying to the entire list is OK at times when you have something to tell everyone ... for instance, Marty's mention that the cell phone popcorn thing "was a hoax" was indeed helpful and appropriate to post to all. 3. I was asked to remind people to post the final answers to a question more often. So if people have helped you .... please summarize your situation so the list can benefit. I think most people are helped and tend to move on and forget to tell us all "what worked". So, if you can, please share your successes and give credit to those who have helped you. 4. One reader noted that if the post might have come from someone other the list owner .... perhaps the responses might not have been so kind .... I think in general our members are very helpful and I expected this type of positive feedback toward anyone ... good point though. 5. Nobody was seriously miffed that I ran this audit ... Warren John Stoneman believes in water power, and he set out to prove his point. The rainy weather barely kept from crashing the party. The Allegheny Region Macintosh User Group held a meeting at Fresh Cup in the North Warren Commons on Wednesday evening, and despite the threat of rain, guitar maker John Stoneman of Bradford was able to demonstrate his "hydroxy booster" in the parking lot. Stoneman showed the various components that allow him to use an electric charge to split water into combustible hydrogen and oxygen gasses. Stoneman created and ignited a sample of the gases using the current from a car battery. Using a jar of water to catch the bubbles, Stoneman was able to cause small, controlled explosions using a lighter. He claims to double the fuel mileage in his car by attaching "Smack's booster" design to the engine. Stoneman maintains a web-site concerning hydroxy technology: www.hydrogenoxygengas.com Those in attendance at ARMUG were also treated to a first-hand demonstration of Apple's iPhone, plus an update of the latest computer news from Apple. At the recent Woldwide Developer's Conference in California, Apple unveiled a new 3G iPhone and details on its new MobileMe service and the pending MacOS 10.6 computer operating system. The Allegheny Region Macintosh Users Group meets monthly, alternating between Fresh Cup internet cafe in North Warren on even-numbered months, and the Labyrinth Press Co. in Jamestown on odd-numbered months, typically on the fourth or last Wednesday of the month. The next meeting is scheduled for Jamestown on July 30. Questions on ARMUG can be directed to group moderator Walt Atwood at (814) 726 - 2774. Had we realized we were on the verge of a record, we may have not taken a lunch break. Today we rehabilitated 23 Macs, just six shy of our all time daily record of 29. 19 were eMacs and four were iMacs. This brings our all-time total to 1,259. The Goodwill ComputerWorks store is well stocked, and there's another warehouse sale in the works. I'll send out a notice when I hear of the details. For the first time, there are rehabilitated Macs available that are capable of running OS X.5 Leopard. The 1.0 and 1.2 ghz eMacs we've done in the past two weeks can run the current Mac OS after you add to the 256 mb RAM in them now. We'll be taking a two-week break for the July 4 holiday and the July 11 iPhone holiday :-) We'll resume our weekly work sessions on Friday, July 18. Robert A. If I understand it correctly, Apple has not admitted any liability, but has agreed to provide compensation to people who bought replacement power adapters when their original adapter failed. It covers only specific Mac models, and the cash payment is only for replacements that were bought within three years of the purchase of the computer. The claim form must be submitted before October 8, 2008. You can get more details at: http://www.gordonvapple.rosenthalco.com/ --- Peter L. It takes more energy to break the molecular bonds of water and separate the constituent elements into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas than is recovered by recombining those elements by burning them and converting them back to water. More found here http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20080630134626665 ========= Oh, one more thing .... BACK UP before you do this update .... Please report your experiences here on our listserve. Dave ------ Notes from Apple ----- Summary The Mac OS X 10.5.4 Update is recommended for Mac OS X 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2, and 10.5.3 Leopard. It includes general operating system improvements that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac. For information about security updates, please see this article. Products Affected Mac OS X 10.5.1, Mac OS X 10.5.2, Mac OS X 10.5, Mac OS X 10.5.3 Important: Read below before installing. It is recommended that you back up your system prior to installing any updates. The installation process should not be interrupted, even if the progress bar remains unchanged for several minutes. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Support Downloads to update. You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modi?cations installed, or if you've modi?ed the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.) If issues occur during installation--for example, if Software Update quits unexpectedly--please see thisarticle. Installing the update To update to Mac OS X 10.5.4, use Software Update or the standalone installer. You only need to use one of these methods to update your computer. Software Update Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to automatically check for the latest Apple software using the Internet, including this update. (Software Update might have linked you to this article to learn more about the update.) If your computer is not up-to-date, other software updates available for your computer may appear which you should install.
