This move follows a decision by Adobe Systems Incorporated, original developer and copyright owner of the format, to relinquish control to ISO, who is now in charge of publishing the specifications for the current version (1.7) and for updating and developing future versions. ?By releasing the full PDF specification for ISO standardization, we are reinforcing our commitment to openness", says Kevin Lynch, Chief Technology Officer at Adobe, in the press release. "As governments and organizations increasingly request open formats, maintenance of the PDF specification by an external and participatory organization will help continue to driveinnovation and expand the rich PDF ecosystem that has evolved over the past 15 years.? My name is Clint, and I've been exclusively using Apple products for 21 of my 28 years on this planet. I'm also an employee at MacOutfitters, an Apple Specialist in Cranberry Township, starting about 2 years ago. Some of you may know me as the salesperson who stays late on Wednesday's for the NPMUG meetings at our store. I'm writing mostly to inform anyone interested in my experience with the first iPhone, and more importantly, my first experience with AT&T wireless service....in the past calendar year. I was first in line on launch day, along with a co-worker from MacOutfitters at the South Hills Village mall Apple Store here in Pittsburgh. The iPhone is truly revolutionary, but it stops there for me. AT&T's network has failed to work in any usable way (as far as actually making and receiving calls) when it comes to using it as an actual phone, while at my current residence in Mars, PA. Upon first investigation when I noticed 1 bar of signal strength, at best, their coverage map on their website showed my address as "moderate". I then began to call once a week to state my dissatisfaction with the service. Nothing was done. I then stopped a few months later in to the AT&T location less than 10 miles from my home, on RT 228 in Cranberry. They stated a "tower was pending" in my area. It has been the most frustrating Apple product experience I've ever been through, and I used Mac OS 9 for years!! Long story short, the other day I had a very lengthy conversation with a manager at AT&T's customer service via telephone. I had to sit in a McDonald's parking lot to do so, considering the unreliability of the phone calls at my home. I explained to her that I have a huge vested interest in Apple products, but none in actually selling the iPhone. I then opened the door for them to offer me a free or discounted land line, a credit to my account in order for me to purchase a signal booster (those cost $200+!!!), or any other offer she could come up with. I clearly articulated that I was not threatening her, but that I would gladly publicize my dissatisfaction (outside of work) however necessary, if I was not taken care of properly. I also stated that I was very interested to know what real incentive or benefit can I gain by buying the new model Friday. I told her I was considering it, only because of the new plastic backing, and in my mind, it may get a better signal than the aluminum backing 1g model (although this is not stated anywhere offically by Apple nor AT&T, this is my own personal theory). By the end of our conversation, AT&T did offer me something, although it is still a disappointment to me. a) cancel my contract, with credit for time I've already used (50%), with a termination fee of $90 (this means, in other words, "don't use the iPhone"!!!!!!!!!, and go with another wireless company!!!) I couldn't believe it!!! I'm an Apple nut! Aargh! b) ) if I am to buy the 2g model on Friday, AT&T is willing to give me 30 days to test it. If I am unhappy still with signal strength near and around my home, I can return it, and revert back to plan A...paying the $90 early termination fee. AT&T would also compensate me for restocking fees incurred at the Apple Store I purchased it from. My biggest surprise came when she explained to me what the local branch truly meant by "a tower is pending in your area". She said that "a tower can take up to 4 years to build". She also referenced her own experience, of not being able to use her own phone within her own building where she works. Strikingly, an AT&T building! Needless to say, neither of these comments were comforting in any way. I'd like to continue to share my experiences and knowledge with the group, and I'd also appreciate any other opinions/news on others' "bad" experiences with using the iPhone as it was built at the core, as a mobile cellular phone. AT&T did screw up my activation because the person at the store mistakenly thought she could transfer my old AT&T phone number (which was on a business account) to my new iPhone (on a personal account). This kept me from making/receiving phone calls for 2 days, and from using EDGE for data for a week. And in the end, I had to get a new phone number anyway. I still use it as my business phone number. Its just on a "personal account" as far as AT&T is concerned. So the activation process was a debacle for me. But once that was finally cleared up, I have been pretty happy with it. I love the phone and its software. It has worked flawlessly for me. As far as signal goes... I happen to get good AT&T signal at my home... down in a valley where Verizon gave me no bars. I suffered with it for a long time until Verizon's customer support ticked me off one to many times on some other issues that I switched to AT&T and the Motorola Razr, in spite of Verizon having a bigger network. Its just the luck of the tower positioning. AT&T gave me full bars at home. I used to work for a telecom equipment vendor as an engineer, so I know that even in areas where there is "good coverage", terrain and tower distance can make some areas inaccessible as far as signal goes. I have an cellular EVDO modem for my Mac from Verizon and my iPhone with AT&T service, and I do a lot of travelling, both locally and nationally, and I've been able to get data connections with both, and voice on the iPhone most everywhere.... remote places like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and The Middle Of Nowhere, Montana excepted. But, yeah, every once in a while there will be that spot in an otherwise "covered" area locally where either or both the Verizon modem or the AT&T service on the iPhone gets nothing. Unfortunately, its a fact of life with cellular technology... from any company. But the cellular companies' customer support make the issues even worse. They all stink. Verizon, AT&T, Comcast. We're spoiled with the response we get from Apple. What we need is a mesh of cellular, WiFi, and eventually WiMax all working together. Cellular to handle the places where the towers can reach. WiMax to handle the places where cellular can't reach due to remoteness. And lots of local WiFi routers that route back to the nearest cell tower or land-line remote terminal or central office to handle those areas where cellular signal can't get to due to terrain or lack of towers, even in a "covered area". Nobody's really explicitly building that kind of network. At least not so far. As for me, I'll keep my "2.5G" original iPhone for another month or two until I read the reviews and reports of how well the 3G network is holding up and what kind of speed-up people are seeing before I go upgrade. In the meantime, I got my iPhone SDK and approval from Apple, so I'll happily start writing software for the iPhone, which is what I really wanted... whether for the original or the new 3G iPhone. The new Apple stuff we're all pretty familiar with, and the Apple crew will be going over in detail next Saturday at the MUG meeting (SHV, 10am). So I just thought I'd share my "Top 5 Apps" so far - all third- party apps downloaded from iTunes. I'm sure there are more awesome apps out there I've missed, in particular "work" related ones (list management, productivity, etc). I basically blew all that off in favor of playing around with the phone. :) So without farther ado - Top 5 Apps available at launch 5) Comic Touch - Take a picture, add a caption! Add thought balloons, speech balloons, etc. Play with funny effects. Then save the picture to the phone's library, email it, or whatever. A fun and easy way to capture a moment, comment it (or "LOL Cat" it) and share it with the world. 4) Super Monkey Ball & Cro-Mag Rally - A tie at 4, both games are a lot of fun, and really impressive. Both are a must-have for one reason: Showing off the OpenGL power of the iPhone. Playing both games is really intuitive, uses the accellorometer for control, and has gorgeous graphics. 3) Pandora - If you've never tried Pandora's website, you're missing out on a great musical tool. You tell Pandora what you like (ie: "I like Elvis Costello and The Killers") and it builds a custom internet radio for you, tuned to your tastes, which you fine-tune by giving each song a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. The iPhone app syncs with your Pandora account perfectly, and lets you listen to your radio stations, add to them, etc. 2) Bejeweled 2 - Based on the well-known game from PopCap, it comes with beautiful backgrounds, music, and exciting effects and gems. A truly addictive puzzle game that's perfect for killing time before a movie starts or while in line. 1) Shazam - Shazam is an awesome app. It "listens" via the iPhone mic and attempts to identify whatever song is playing in your ambient area. For example, say you're in the car and an awesome song comes on the radio... you want to know what it's called, or maybe buy it... but how? Enter Shazam.. just fire up your iPhone, let it listen to the song for about 12 seconds, and then volia! Artist, Title, Albumn, and (if possible) Album art all appear.. along with links for buying it in iTunes, watching the music video on YouTube, etc. I've tested it with my own esoteric MP3 collection and in a car (changing the channel and having it guess every song it hears. This thing is amazing. Get it. Honorable Mentions: AIM, Mobile News Network, Talking French/Italian/ Spanish/etc Phrases, Movie.app, Epocrates Rx. Charles PS: Fun tip! You can take a screenshot of the iPhone by holding down the Home button for a few seconds and hitting the power button. That's how I got these cool pictures. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It took an Apple Technician a week to do it, but it's working. You need to complain to Apple. Complaining to one another serves no useful purpose. I was ready to throw-in-the-towel with Apple until they helped me, which they did. I don't have a video iPod or iPhone and don't want them either. But between my new MacBookPro running 10.5.2, my home G-4 Quicksilver running 10.4.11 and my G-4 Mirror Door at work also running 10.4.11 and MobleMe on all Macs and my work PC are all working as advertised. I asked Apple if I could just start over and they said that it wasn't possible. I threatened to discontinue my dotmac account and that's when they swung into action. Kevin, my personal MobileMe technician, fixed my calendars twice and my address book once. I'm still getting some emails twice, but that isn't a problem that I can't live with. Bottom line, complain to Apple. If they think they are going to loose money that will adversely affect their bottom line and stock price, they will help you. My next crusade will take on Filemaker support and Adobe. Wish me luck. They need to be accountable for their products too and we need to be able to fix problems with their software without a credit card. We have recently completed the transition from .Mac to MobileMe. Unfortunately, it was a lot rockier than we had hoped. Although core services such as Mail, iDisk, Sync, Back to My Mac, and Gallery went relatively smoothly, the new MobileMe web applications had lots of problems initially. Fortunately we have worked through those problems and the web apps are now up and running. Another snag we have run into is our use of the word "push" in describing everything under the MobileMe umbrella. While all email, contact or calendar changes on the iPhone and the web apps are immediately synced to and from the MobileMe "cloud," changes made on a PC or Mac take up to 15 minutes to sync with the cloud and your other devices. So even though things are indeed instantly pushed to and from your iPhone and the web apps today, we are going to stop using the word "push" until it is near-instant on PCs and Macs, too. We want to apologize to our loyal customers and express our appreciation for their patience by giving all current subscribers an automatic 30-day extension to their MobileMe subscription free of charge. Your extension will be reflected in your account settings within the next few weeks. We hope you enjoy your new suite of web applications at me.com, in addition to keeping your iPhone and iPod touch wirelessly in sync with these new web applications and your Mac or PC. Thank you, The MobileMe Team Apple also acknowledged that the use of the word "push" with regard to the desktop portion of their sync services was misleading and has changed their documentation to reflect that. They state that won't use these terms "until it is near-instant on PCs and Macs" suggesting that this could come in the future. Apple will be extending all MobileMe subscribers an automatic 30-day extension. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Macs + "the cloud" + iPhone/Touch ... get to know the differences Message-ID: <42A0369B-89F3-4F78-936F-D6E40B5B1ED5@davesevick.com> OK ..... I'm now understanding what "PUSH" means .... and it can be tricky. I did some testing and here is my final analysis tonight : Know the differences between the way Macs + "the cloud" + iPhone/ Touch talk to each other. ------------ The Details ------- Note: Apple has revised the meaning of PUSH today and would rather the term "automatic sync" be used : Updates between me.com and iPhone or iPod touch will occur in a matter of seconds. Updates between me.com and Macs running Mac OS X Leopard and Windows PCs may take up to 15 minutes when MobileMe is set to sync automatically (Macs running Mac OS X Tiger may experience longer sync times). And my testing in iCal and Address Book is more in line with those new definitions. However, I would not count on 15 minutes when updating your Mac calendar "automatic sync" to my iPhone ( not a 3G ) running 2.0 software. It is more like 30min at times. ============== Mac to iPhone I just did several changes to calendars on my MacBook Pro using iCal and Address Book and it took 37 minutes to reach my iPhone. Settings on iPhone set to "Push" or as we now call it "automatic sync" contacts and calendars to my Me.Com account ... and all my iCalendars set to "Publish changes automatically". I tested the response times ( MacBook Pro to iPhone ) with no command-shift-r refreshing ... and with a command-shift-r forced "refresh all" and it makes no difference. The time it takes to get from my MacBook Pro to "the cloud" and back down to my iPhone can vary from 15min to 30+ minutes. iPhone to Mac Same slow results with long delays going from iPhone changes to the cloud and back down to my MacBook Pro Address Book and iCal apps. ------------ The Good News ------- Understanding "the cloud" called MobileMe It is important to observe the MobileMe website in action. That is where the new fast action takes place and can be refreshing to see .... and get people to start appreciating MobileMe ! On your Mac, open up your Me.Com web page, login, and watch your iPhone/Touch respond to changes in seconds. I repeated the testing I did earlier with multiple calendars and contacts .... they do indeed show up on my me.com site within seconds. That's great news. So if you rely heavily on iCal and Address Book ..... you'll have to endure the delays for now. Until Apple engineers a way to make it as snappy as the MobileMe website. You'll also find the AJAX based web design of MobileMe to be very cool, allowing for drag and drop and Spotlight-like searching ..... So, in closing, my recent frustrations ... posted here on the listserve last night .... revolved around the tediumof waiting for the iCal and Address Book apps to be "quick" as I sat there with my stopwatch ..... and that is just not going to happen at this time with MobileMe. I think it was Tom Petty that said "the waiting is the hardest part ....." Dave -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... VirtualBox's guest additions allow seamless interaction and then you can have windows apps running next to native ones. The program is well worth the price. Nathan. It is reassuring to know that when I am plagued with a Macdilemna that such expertise is readily at hand! My problem is solved but the solution was different than predicted. One thing kept coming to mind as I wrestled with the problem. A few months ago my teen-age son asked if I could remove the password at start-up that I had imposed as a disciplinary measure at an earlier date. Since the discipline time was over I went about removing the password but the only solution I could find (and this is stretching my memory on how in the heck I managed this) was to do a change the password and put "nothing" (not the word, I mean NOTHING) in the password field. My son was happy and it made starting up all the easier for me. When my problem began the other day I was attempting to re-install Photoshop Elements and of course it asked for my password. That is where my previous post came in. I tried all my usual witty words and nothing worked. After reading all your responses I thought I should try one more time and this time when I went to "Change your password" I left the previous password field blank (aka nothing) and typed in my new password. Voila! It worked! It took my new password. Now if I could only get Photoshop Elements to work! I was re- installing it because it was crashing every time I tried to open it. I re-installed and it is still doing the same thing. It is version 3.0. Perhaps it is time for an upgrade? : ) Thanks again! For example, the trojan OSX/Hovdy-A is really nasty, and if it gets on your machine, the hacker has full access to the system, and can record everything you do. More info: http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/viruses-and-spyware/osxhovdya.html Like all trojans, in order for this one to infect your machine, you have to give it permission. It's not a virus (something that will infect you without your permission) What does this mean? Use caution when downloading programs, "fun stuff", mystery "video codecs", and files. Keep in mind, if something is asking you for your Username and Password, they're asking for permission to install something. Only give permission to programs you trust. Apple can make OSX only "mostly" secure, and the weakest link is the same for any security system - Humans. As the Mac gets more popular (which, judging by Apple's last quarterly report, is now) it's going to be targeted by malware writers more and more. They're going to have a hard time writing viruses for OSX (since it is really tightly written) so they're going to focus on the weak link: You. Among other benefits, it can keep multiple Macs, PCs and iPhones in sync. E-mail, calendars and address books are wirelessly kept up to date. Very cool idea. When I started testing it on July 10, there were a lot of glitches, especially with the Web-based address book, calendar and e-mail programs. Apple told me that it was having some technical problems, but that they were rapidly being solved. And sure enough, by the 14th, several days after the launch, I was really pounding on it, and it worked as advertised. Well, actually, not quite "as advertised." Apple was saying the service offered "push" e-mail, calendar and contacts, meaning that changes were propagated instantly among devices. In fact, as I noted in my review, Macs and PCs don't check for updates any more frequently than every 15 minutes. Otherwise, though, the system works very well -- for me -- and it's extremely useful. On July 16, Apple took the very unusual step of sending an apology to all MobileMe members, saying that the launch "was a lot rockier than we had hoped." Fortunately, the letter went on, "we have worked through those problems and the Web apps are now up and running." It also said that Apple would stop using the word "push" in its advertising until Macs and PCs did their syncing nearly instantly. It concluded with an apology, and a free one-month extension to every member's subscription. Unfortunately, MobileMe's problems were nowhere near over. After my review appeared, a strange note showed up on the MobileMe support Web site: "1% of MobileMe members cannot access MobileMe Mail. We apologize for this service interruption and are working hard to resolve the problem." Now, even if 1 percent is accurate, Apple has 2 million Mac/MobileMe customers. So that's at least 20,000 people. And just about every one of them e-mailed me. For most of them, the e-mail features of MobileMe just don't work. The online Mail program at Me.com shows up empty; mail you try to send from your e-mail program never goes out; and messages sent to you get bounced. For a few, it's a lot worse. "This morning, I woke up and turned on my computer," wrote one reader. "Happily, it seemed that the MobileMe e-mail service was back up. However, a few seconds later, when my computer synced with Mac/MobileMe, ALL of my e-mail -- every single e-mail I've ever sent, received, and filed on .Mac -- disappeared. Every e-mail file on my hard drive (in the Mail library) was gone. I immediately went to Me.com to make sure that all my e-mail was still saved to Apple's server. It wasn't. All of the mail was gone." Apple escalated her case and dedicated top technicians to it, for which she was grateful. In the end, however, they recovered only 43 messages. The rest are gone forever. "I can't even begin to describe how unnerving, enraging, unbelievable and frustrating it is to have thousands of e-mails that I rely on disappear -- from a service that I'm paying for," she wrote me. As days went by with no change, the disastrous launch began taking on a life of its own. Small-business owners lost money because they couldn't get e-mail from their customers. The Apple support Web site filled up with messages from apoplectic customers. People started calling it "ImmobileMe" and "MobileMess." MobileMe tech support, my correspondents tell me, is nearly impossible to reach; the recording says that the support team is "unavailable due to the overwhelming interest in MobileMe." (Somehow I doubt that "overwhelming interest" is the problem.) When you do reach them, they're apologetic but can do nothing to help. O.K., look: Even big companies screw up. Intel's done it. Microsoft's done it. Google's done it. Maybe it wasn't such a hot idea for Apple to launch four enormously complex initiatives -- the iPhone 3G, the App Store, the iPhone 2.0 software update and MobileMe -- all on the same day. Still, things can go wrong. We get that. And it's a little mind-boggling that today, nearly two weeks after MobileMe's official opening, Apple still hasn't solved the problem. That's got to be a record in the short history of cloud computing. But the real problem is how Apple is responding. For a company that's so brilliant at marketing, it seems to have absolutely no clue about crisis management. One of my correspondents put it like this: "I love Apple. My first computer ever was a 128K Macintosh. But the lack of explanation and communication on the MobileMe problem is outrageous. Why not update the status message? Why not give us some indication of what's going on?" I called Apple. Would the P.R. team be willing to say what the problem is? What is being done to solve it? When might it be fixed? What kind of resources or time is being spent on a resolution? No. Apple declined to comment on any of that. A P.R. manager did, however, offer me this official statement: "The .Mac to MobileMe transition was a lot rockier than we had hoped, and we are still having some growing pains. Some users have been having problems with their e-mail in particular, and we are trying to restore the service as soon as possible. We're very thankful for our loyal customers' patience as we work out the kinks." Shortly thereafter, that stale, static status message on the MobileMe site was expanded to include this: "We understand this is a serious issue and apologize for this service interruption. We are working hard to restore your service." That's about as far as Apple will go in expressing an understanding of the emotional toll the outage is causing those 20,000 people. It's amazing that Apple doesn't recognize this situation. This is an airplane that's stuck on the runway for hours with no food or working bathroom. And the pilot doesn't come on the P.A. system to tell the customers what the problem is, what's being done to fix it, how much longer they might be stuck, and how he empathizes with their plight. Instead, he comes on once every three hours to repeat the same thing: "We apologize for the inconvenience." MobileMess, indeed. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/24/technology/personaltech/24pogue-email.html?8cir&emc=cir -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... But average consumers haven't had an easy way to do that. They often waste a lot of time manually synchronizing calendars and contacts, or waiting for email to be fetched. So it was a big deal when Apple announced a new service that, for $100 a year, would bring corporate-type synchronization of email, calendars and contacts to anyone. It was even better that Apple promised that the service, called MobileMe, would work on Windows computers as well as on the company's own Macintosh computers, iPhones and iPod Touch hand-helds. To top it off, Apple threw in 20 gigabytes of online storage, a suite of Web-based applications, the ability to synchronize browser bookmarks and an online photo gallery. see full article at http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121685869764279343.html -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Now, before you start sending me hate mail, let me be clear: I still consider the iPhone to be one of the greatest technology inventions of the decade. And the new iPhone 3G is even better than the original. The iPhone 2.0 software, especially the App Store, is a significant leap forward from iPhone 1.1.4. As for MobileMe, on balance (assuming the service can ever get past its initial hassles and actually work as intended), I believe it is marginally superior to the .Mac service it replaces. So what's the problem? The problem is this: The new hardware features in the iPhone 3G and the new options in MobileMe are largely irrelevant to me (and I suspect to a lot of other people as well). iPhone 3G Let's start with the iPhone 3G. It has only two major new features: 3G network support and GPS tracking capability. Yes, it also has improved sound (I can now hear my iPhone ringing even in a noisy environment) and a standard-size headphone outlet. But these are small-change improvements. It's 3G and GPS that represent the major differences from the original iPhone. So let's look at these features. If you had asked me before I bought an iPhone 3G, I would have told you that 3G support is a very big deal. Indeed, painfully slow Web browsing, when using an EDGE connection, was my single biggest complaint about the original iPhone. However, it turns out that the 3G capability makes far less difference for me than I had anticipated. For one thing, the 3G network is not available in nearly as many places as the EDGE network. I often can't get on the 3G network. Even if I do make a 3G connection, it is often such a weak one (just one bar with occasional dropping off altogether) that the overall speed seems not much different than with an EDGE connection. Making matters worse, keeping 3G enabled on my iPhone is a significant battery drain. Plus (although I have not yet had problems here), iPhone Atlas reports that 3G can interfere with other iPhone functions, such as using GPS in Maps or making calls through a Bluetooth car audio system. The net result is that I have decided to disable 3G on my iPhone (via the option in Settings > General > Network). I turn it back on pretty much only if I intend to use Safari and find myself in an area that has a reasonably strong 3G connection but no Wi-Fi availability. This combination doesn't happen very often. As for GPS, this too appeared at first to be a great addition to the iPhone. I was especially looking forward to using an iPhone as a turn- by-turn navigation aid -- eliminating the need for me to purchase and carry around a separate GPS device. However, as you have probably heard by now, this turn-by-turn feature is not yet available for the iPhone. Without this, GPS in an iPhone offers very little. Remember, even without GPS, your iPhone can still find your current location in Maps and can still use Location Services in other applications (such as for geotagging photos). The non-GPS location ability is not as accurate as GPS and doesn't offer "live tracking" but (at least for my use) it is usually good enough. Finally, there are locations (such as when surrounded by tall buildings) where GPS may not be available even though other networking options are. The end result, once again, is that I rarely take advantage of having GPS on my iPhone. Eventually, I expect these features to offer more value than they do today (turn-by-turn GPS may even be in the next iPhone update, asreported by iPhone Atlas). But for right now, given my use of the iPhone, the advantages of upgrading from an original iPhone to an iPhone 3G have turned out to be close to zero. MobileMe Then there's MobileMe. I am sure you have heard about the troubled start of this new service (read this article if you haven't heard). But forget all of that. My disappointment with MobileMe would remain even if everything about the service worked exactly as promised. Yes, there are some valid uses for MobileMe (just as there were for its .Mac predecessor). Assuming you are willing to spend $99 a year, rather than seek out cheaper or even free alternatives, you can use it to sync data across multiple Macs, backup your Mac's data to an online source or post photos to a Web gallery. However, I am focusing here on what's new in MobileMe, what you can now do that you couldn't do with .Mac. In this regard, there appear to be only two significant additions: The Web apps (for managing your email, contacts and calendars from a browser) and the ability to push these data to your iPhone. I rarely need to access my data from a browser. Thus, for me, the single biggest new draw of MobileMe is the push function: the ability to have changes made on my Mac (or email that I receive) instantly and wirelessly transfer to my iPhone. The first splash of reality here is that (as Apple has acknowledged) "instant" can really mean "15 minutes or more" -- when going from your Mac to the MobileMe cloud and from there to your iPhone. But let's ignore this too. The critical questions for me were: How important is it for my iPhone to receive updated data (almost) instantly? And is it worth the downsides? The answers turned out to be: Not very and no. I don't often update my Address Book. And I rarely make calendar appointments on such short notice that I need to worry about getting them from my Mac to my iPhone within 15 minutes. Or vice versa. In any case, when I make such changes, I am typically at my desk using my Mac. If needed, I can sync my iPhone in iTunes after making the changes. As for email, I can set my iPhone to fetch new messages every 15 minutes from any email account, even without MobileMe. I have no need to find out about new messages more often than that. Apple states: "Push is recommended because it helps reduce unnecessary network traffic, and updates data without you have to open an application." True enough. However, except for email, you don't get alerted to when new data arrives on your iPhone. For example, if your spouse enters information to your calendar in iCal, while you are away from home, you won't know about it on your iPhone until you open up the Calendar program and check. So you still wind up having to open the application. Even so, I might welcome using these push features -- if it weren't for their downside. The biggest downside (as with the 3G network) is that the continual checking for new data uses up the iPhone's battery at a faster rate. Beyond that, putting MobileMe between your iPhone and your Mac adds another layer of complexity and thereby another opportunity for things to go wrong. For instance, a recently posted Apple article states: "When syncing contacts with MobileMe on an iPhone, if you have assigned a specific ringtone to a contact, the ringtone for that contact may revert back to the default ringtone." Oops. That's not what you want to happen. I can imagine there are iPhone users who would benefit from a near instant wireless updating of their contact, calendar and bookmark data. However, most of these people are in the business world and are using Microsoft Exchange, and thus don't need MobileMe. Bottom line The bottom line with MobileMe is the same as for the iPhone 3G: For most users, the newly added features offer little or no value to the service/device it replaces. This means that, if you currently own an original iPhone, I wouldn't rush to replace it. And if you have happily lived without .Mac, I don't see much reason to subscribe to MobileMe. Please use this dedicated chat line for Mail issues only. By completing this restoration of Mail services, we hope we have put the vast majority of MobileMe Mail problems behind us and can now focus on improving other aspects of this new ambitious service. Yesterday (Monday) morning a syncing bug was discovered which caused contact and calendar data to not sync properly over-the-air with iPhones and iPod touch. For some users this caused their contact and calendar data to disappear from their devices, but not from their computers or the MobileMe cloud. When we fixed the bug in the late afternoon, the problem resolved itself for most users: their data simply reappeared on their iPhone or iPod Touch. If you are one of those affected users and your data has not automatically reappeared, follow the steps at this link to restore your data. Next post later this week. Anyone else experiencing any problems? thanks -- Ron From dave at davesevick.com Wed Jul 30 20:01:38 2008 From: dave at davesevick.com (Dave Sevick) Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2008 22:01:38 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] Got my new iPhone 3G tonight ... in and out within 10 minutes !!!! I bought one. Took 10 minutes for the purchase and activation. Wireless terminals for sales. Receipt sent via email. Nice ! The store was packed ! But service was excellent and professional and non-rushed. -------------- Went on down the the far end of the lower level to the at&t wireless store .... by Boskov's. Got in line and got my base iPhone plan (you must have a plan with non special additional discounts attached for the smooth Apple experience at the store ) updated to a Family Plan and proceeded to pickup/ purchase my 8GB 3G and place my wife's 2G iPhone ( my old one, ported over to her) and daughters iPhones on a Family Plan. The at&t staffers were great also .... even with about 30 people in the store stacked deep at every terminal. The staff was cool and professional and well informed about Apple ( I listened closely ) and pleasant. We got our family plan in place and are now all happily at home with a mix of 3G and 2G phones ..... all sharing a MobileMe Family Pack ( $149 ) with shared calendars and contacts. ------------- MobileMe still is not perfect yet .... but I'm betting it will be very soon. ------------- If not .... We came down with a truck yesterday to pick up some historic artifacts for future display at the Trolley Museum (the nation's first computerized fare collection equipment). That happens at City Hall Station in Camden this morning at 10. The Apple good news is that last night we went to the K o'Prussia Mall for dinner and visited the Apple Store there. The store was wall to wall people. Same basic size, layout, and tables as SHV but every table had at least 10 people gathered around it playing with the cool stuff and buying iPhones... For a Wednesday night...I was really impressed.
