Message-ID: <399F4C2E-874E-4CCA-BD1F-B0E2863DA768@davesevick.com> http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/02/technology/02yahoo.html?_r=1&th=&oref=slogin&emc=th&pagewanted=print February 2, 2008 Eyes on Google, Microsoft Bids $44 Billion for Yahoo By MIGUEL HELFT and ANDREW ROSS SORKIN SAN FRANCISCO ? Jerry Yang, the chief executive of Yahoo, was finishing a regularly scheduled company board meeting Thursday night when his assistant interrupted him with an urgent phone call. It was Steven A. Ballmer, the chief executive of Microsoft, and his message was curt. He did not call to negotiate. Microsoft would make public a hostile $44.6 billion offer for Yahoo early Friday morning in a bold move to counter Google?s online pre-eminence. Mr. Yang, in shock, rushed back with the news to his directors, some of whom were getting ready to leave Yahoo?s headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif. The board meeting was no longer over; it would turn into a strategy session that stretched into the night. The message that jolted Mr. Yang also jolted the technology industry. Yahoo, founded by two Stanford graduate students, Mr. Yang and David Filo, was once the leader of the dot-com world. But it has been dethroned in recent years by Google, itself founded by two Stanford graduate students. For its part, Microsoft has struggled to compete with Google?s ever- widening lead in search and advertising as the computer world shifts from desktop products to online software and services supported by ads. Each company has persistently tried to best Google but failed. ?No one can compete with Google on their own anymore,? said Jon Miller, the former chairman and chief executive of AOL, which itself is struggling to compete in online advertising. ?There has to be consolidation among the major players. It has been a long time coming, and now it is here.? If consummated, the deal would instantly redraw the competitive landscape on the Internet. And it would escalate the rivalry between Microsoft and Google, already the most intense high-stakes battle in the technology world, over who will dominate the booming online advertising business. The offer of $31 a share represents a 62 percent premium over Yahoo?s closing stock price of $19.18 on Thursday, a far cry from its peak of $118.75 right before the dot-com bubble crash. The offer includes stock and cash and is likely to put intense pressure on Mr. Yang and Yahoo?s board, which ended earlier merger discussions with Microsoft about a year ago. Microsoft shares fell 6.6 percent Friday, to close at $30.45; Yahoo rose 48 percent to close at $28.38. Yahoo has spent billions of dollars in recent years to develop better search and advertising technology, and started a clumsy effort to create Hollywood-style entertainment for the Web. But Yahoo?s growth has lagged, prompting Mr. Yang, who was appointed chief executive last summer amid growing shareholder dissatisfaction, to announce major layoffs this week ? 1,000 of its 14,300 workers. He also warned investors that a turnaround was not likely until 2009. For Microsoft, the bid underscores both the company?s urgency and its determination to succeed online. ?I personally thought long and hard about this,? Mr. Ballmer said Friday morning after the bid was announced. The bid for Yahoo, he said, was ?the right path.? The two companies, distant No. 2 and No. 3 players in Internet search, previously considered combining into a more powerful force that would have the power and audience to take on Google, No. 1 by a wide margin in both Internet search and online advertising. Mr. Ballmer met several times in late 2006 and early 2007 with Terry S. Semel, then Yahoo?s chief executive, people involved in the talks said. After a series of secret meetings between the sides in hotels around California and elsewhere, Yahoo?s board decided against progressing with the talks, betting that its stock would turn around, these people said. Mr. Yang, in particular, was adamantly against selling the company, they said. Mr. Ballmer constantly consulted with Bill Gates, Microsoft?s chairman. Then this week teams of bankers and lawyers holed up in two low-slung podlike buildings on Microsoft?s campus plotted how much to bid. After Yahoo reported weaker-than-expected earnings on Tuesday and its stock fell, Microsoft, which had been considering a bid in the mid- $30 range, settled on $31 a share. ?A year has gone by, and the competitive situation has not improved,? Mr. Ballmer wrote in Thursday?s letter to the Yahoo board. Yahoo said Friday that its board would evaluate Microsoft?s bid ?carefully and promptly in the context of Yahoo?s strategic plans.? Analysts say few companies, other than Google, would have the resources to compete with Microsoft?s bid. On Friday, Yahoo?s bankers ? Goldman Sachsand Lehman Brothers ? were canvassing behind the scenes for other suitors, putting out feelers to the likes of News Corporation, AT&T and others. And Google is not likely to enter the fray because of probable antitrust objections. A Google spokesman said Friday that it would be ?premature to comment.? The proposed merger, if accepted by Yahoo?s board, could bring renewed antitrust scrutiny of Microsoft, which spent years in court battling the Justice Department. Even if it is ultimately approved, the deal could face lengthy delays. It took the Federal Trade Commission nearly nine months to clear Google?s far smaller proposed buyout of the advertising specialist DoubleClick. That deal, announced in April, remains under review in Europe. ?This is an order of magnitude larger and will require much more scrutiny and data,? said Carl W. Tobias, the Williams professor at the University of Richmond School of Law, in Virginia. Professor Tobias said, ?Obviously Google will try to weigh in and try to persuade regulators that it does raise serious questions.? A Microsoft-Yahoo merger would give Web publishers and online advertisers ?a more competitive and compelling No. 2? to Google, thus enhancing competition and consumer welfare, said Bradford L. Smith, Microsoft?s general counsel. The combination of Yahoo and Microsoft would create a more powerful counterweight to Google. Yahoo?s audience, already the largest on the Internet, would be bolstered by the tens of millions of users of Microsoft?s services, creating a much larger online display advertising business. In Internet search, the market share of the two companies would rise to 31 percent of the American market, according to comScore. That would still be far below Google?s 58 percent share, but would help the companies attract more advertisers and higher prices for ads. Microsoft executives said the merger would provide it with more engineering talent and technology infrastructure, and would result in annual savings of $1 billion. The combination will also bring Microsoft relationships with a long list of publishers and advertisers, bolstering the company?s quest to become a leading seller of ads not only on its site, but on sites across the Web. Microsoft, which paid $6 billion last year for the online advertising specialist aQuantive, already sells ads on popular sites like Facebook and Digg, as Yahoo does on eBay, Comcast and the sites of hundreds of newspapers. Google, for its part, beat out Microsoft for deals with MySpace, AOL and others. The challenge of integrating the two companies could well become one of the most complex undertakings in Microsoft?s history. ?In the world of mergers and acquisitions, this is as tough as it gets,? Mr. Yoffie added. In an interview, Mr. Ballmer acknowledged that a merger review and the integration of the two companies would take time, but he said that Microsoft would keep forging ahead in the meantime. ?We?ll keep the pedal to the metal,? he said. ?I assume Yahoo will keep the pedal to the metal.? Miguel Helft reported from San Francisco and Andrew Ross Sorkin from New York. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My eyes have been very red some days and the only thing I can think of that has been different to cause this is the MacBook's screen. Is there anything I can do to eliminate the glossiness of it? I think that the reflectiveness of that screen is what's getting me, because I've used the matte screens on the iBooks since 2000 without a problem and have used CRTs for many more years. Just kidding! I don't want to hear about people taking sandpaper to their screens! Don't do it! :-) But I think I'm feeling your pain. I just got a Macbook Air and its the first glossy screened laptop I've had, and I've noticed similar symptoms. There's not much that can be done about the glare except finding a position where external light doesn't shine off of the screen. But another possibility that seemed to help me is related to the new LCD backlighting. That LCD backlighting seems much brighter than the old fluorescent (I think that's what they were) backlighting that my Macbook Pro has. I don't know if it is brighter, but it sure seems so and its a lot of light shining straight into my eyes. So I backed the brightness down and that seemed to help with the red, tired, itchy eyes. Your mileage may vary. Sean McCune On 2/7/08, Scott Baret wrote: > Hi everyone, > > I got myself a new MacBook in December and since then have noticed a > lot of headaches and eye pain/strain. This is actually correct. The image is automatically mirrored on your end, so that the person receiving the video chat (on the other end) will see the image correctly. On typical web cams, the image is mirrored on the receiver's end, which is obviously not the best situation. If, by chance, you also use the iSight with Photo Booth, to take still pictures, you can turn on the "Auto Flip New Photos" option under the Edit menu. -Dave From dave at davesevick.com Fri Feb 8 11:32:37 2008 From: dave at davesevick.com (Dave Sevick) Date: Fri, 8 Feb 2008 13:32:37 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] BusinessWeek rips Microsoft's Steve Ballmer in an open letter .... with references to Apple Message-ID: <0F389CA8-42C6-4333-9981-9F94CEE4DA49@davesevick.com> MacDaily News reports : http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/businessweeks_hesseldahl_rips_microsofts_ballmer_in_open_letter/ BusinessWeek's Arik Hesseldahl, in an open letter to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, says that Microsoft's unsolicited offer for Yahoo! is "a profoundly bad idea" and that Ballmer has no focus: Here is a clip from << page 2 >> So who has focus? That other Steve. You know, the turtle-necked guy in California who keeps annoying you by selling iPods and computers that typically don't run on Windows. You could learn a lot from him. Focus saved his company from oblivion. Apple (AAPL) does what it's good at, and it expands into new areas carefully. (Examples: iPod, iTunes music store, Apple retail store, iPhone.) Consider this: With sales data showing that Mac computers are growing more popular than ever among consumers, you might think it's a perfect time for Apple to ride that momentum and go after corporate computing. But it won't. Why? Apple knows it wouldn't work because you have the corporate market all tied up with your pals Dell (DELL) and HP. And why is the Mac growing more popular among consumers? Well, let's be honest. WindowsVista isn't exactly winning you many friends despite all the extra time you took to "perfect" it. (How many deadlines did you miss again?) At the same time, Apple's cleaning your clock in the smartphone business?the iPhone is now the second most popular smartphone in the U.S., behind the BlackBerry (RIMM). I haven't heard anyone talk enthusiastically about Windows Mobile, since?well, since there's been a Windows Mobile. You know what would be a bold move, Steve? Admitting that Microsoft doesn't belong in the music player business, or the search business, or the advertising business, or the automotive entertainment business. The Zune? It's a joke. Kill it before you embarrass yourself further. And are the combined forces of Yahoo and Microsoft really going to make a dent in the Googlesearch advertising juggernaut? That's like asking two fifth-graders to play Kobe Bryant in a game of two-on-one. The results will speak for themselves. I have had problems staying connected to my wireless router and only really noticed it since upgrading my system. My tower is hardwired via ethernet cable and no problems there, but the laptops in the house seem to have issues. The laptop antenna icon shows a good signal, but I won't be able to stay connected to the internet? I have reset the router many times, I even went so far as to buy an brand new one, and still the problem exists. I am really stumped on this one. I have checked all the connections and cables without success. I am thinking that it could be a system issue.... Your thoughts? Here's another attempt to get you up to date. Feb. 8: Thanks to Charlie Hutchens, John Hamill, Bob Wray, Dave Sevick, Al Klug and Scott Baret for stopping on last Friday's work day. We were unexpectedly greeted with a donation treasure from the Manchester Academy Charter School: 19 Snow 600 mhz iMacs in very good condition. We were able to get 15 tuned-up with OS X.3 and ready for the ComputerWorks store that very day. There are three more on our workbench to finish at our next work session on Friday, Feb. 15. Our current total is 1,087 Macs rehabilitated. Feb. 2 (this will be the fifth attempt to post this): Many thanks to Charlie Hutchens, John Hamill, Bob Wray, Al Klug, Dave Sevick, Nathan Brentzel and Marty Swartz for joining me at the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center this weekend. We rehabilitated 28 OS 9 and OS X iMacs in the past two days to bring our grand total up to 1,072. In the immortal words of Jim Carey in "The Mask:" We be smokin! We still have a need for USB mice, even after John Hamill rescued more than a dozen working mice today from the depths of the "Bad PC Mouse" box. Our next work session is next Friday, Feb. 8. I hope you can make it. Robert A. I dropped the machine off at the SHV Apple Store Saturday morning and they replaced the airport card (an applecare job). I picked it up last night, brought it home and upgraded to 10.5.2. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work with the Verizon equipment (Westell 327). Same problem. Fortunately bridging with my old Airport Extreme still does. I am also experience an annoying cursor pause when I tax this machine's brain with an app switch or other odd times. Can't find anything on the support pages except the suggestion to uncheck the "accidental mouse click" box in the prefs. That works but really drives me crazy when typing because it enlarges the trackpad into the palm rest area. Any suggestions out there??? To oversimplify, CRT monitors work by sweeping an electron beam back and forth across the screen. The sweeping is controlled using high-voltage electromagnetic coils. The high-voltage circuitry is very often the first thing to go bad in a CRT monitor. If possible, I would suggest trying a different monitor for a short time, or switching the questionable monitor to another system. Maybe LaCie owes you another monitor, if the original warranty is still in effect. The flickering is affected by the monitor's refresh rate. Take a look in the Displays preference. Refresh rates below 70 or 75 Hertz can cause visible flickering. (Faster refresh rates still "flicker", that electron beam is still sweeping back and forth across the screen. It's just too fast for the human eye to perceive!) He now resides in Blacksburg, Virginia and continues to produce a great utility called "Default Folder". Here is yesterday's interview on MacFixIt. http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20080215093124333 Late-Breakers Friday, February 15 2008 @ 09:30 AM PST mac.column.ted: Happy Anniversary to Default Folder Ted Landau February 2008 Default Folder (with and without the X) is one of the most enduring utilities ever released for the Mac. The first version dates back to 1988. That's right. 1988. Even Apple doesn't have much software that dates back that far. This means that 2008 is Default Folder's twentieth anniversary! My recollection is that I started using Default Folder soon after its initial release and have been a more than satisfied customer ever since. For those of you unfamiliar with this great utility, here's what you need to know: Default Folder X modifies the way Open and Save dialog boxes work. Its primary feature, which is the one that gave the utility its name, is to have these dialogs rebound to the last file and folder location you selected. It does this for each application each time you access one of the dialogs. The idea is to have the dialog automatically open to where you most likely want it to be, rather than having to navigate through a folder hierarchy and long list of files each time. Should you wish, Default Folder X also allows you to easily move to any other location. With the newest 4.x version, you also get access to "Get Info" window attributes, full-screen previews and a tres cool translucent display. To honor Default Folder's anniversary, I asked Jon Gotow, the creator of the software, for an interview. Happily, he agreed. Here's how the conversation went: The need for a utility like Default Folder seems obvious now. But it wasn't so obvious back in 1988. How did you come up with the idea? I wrote the very first version of Default Folder when I was in graduate school. A friend and I were frustrated with the fact that the file dialogs never seemed to show you the folder you wanted. I told him I thought I could hack the file dialogs to work better. He was skeptical, so I stayed up that entire night to prove I could do it. What eventually resulted was the very first version of Default Folder (then called DFaultD). Default Folder is intimately linked to the Mac OS user interface, as it works within Open and Save dialogs. In fact, I've gotten so used to having Default Folder that I sometimes forget, until Default Folder is disabled for some reason, that its features are not actually part of the OS (which is probably one of the highest compliments a utility can receive). In many cases, with similarly successful utilities, Apple eventually "copied" their functions and included them in the OS, effectively putting the utility "out of business." This has not happened with Default Folder. Do you have any theory as why Apple has left it alone? Perhaps I'm insanely lucky? Or Default Folder X does become such an integral part of the OS that folks at Apple also forget that it's not a part of OS X. In all seriousness, I think part of it is that the Open and Save dialogs aren't a particularly glamorous area where users focus a lot of attention?from a cost/benefit perspective, it's not a place where Apple sees a "big win." File dialogs are one of those little annoyances that can be made better, but the benefit is something realized over time. Popular utilities often spawn competitors, even if not from Apple. For example, if you want a utility to replace Mac OS X's Dock, you can probably choose from at least a half-dozen excellent third-party alternatives. Yet, Default Folder (at least to my knowledge) has no competitors. Any theory on why this is so? Making something like Default Folder X is hard, and explaining and marketing it to the average user is even harder. As a small developer, I've been able to allow the utility to grow over time. Many sales are by word-of-mouth. Larger companies want to sell programs they can push hard with advertising. Default Folder X, because it's really the sum of lots of smaller features, is hard to sell that way. I think the fact that it's hard to explain and that users don't necessarily "know they need it" has kept other companies from giving it a go. Is your shareware business a full-time job for you? St. Clair Software has been my full-time job since 1997. I actually started out in Mechanical Engineering and taught myself to write software. After getting a Mac Plus, I became totally hooked and began writing software for fun. I eventually got a job with a software company in Pittsburgh. I soon discovered that I didn't like being in management, and "returned to my roots" by starting St. Clair Software. Running the business does takes a lot of time and energy. I often spend more time doing tech support and administrative functions than I do on development, and that can be frustrating. It's definitely much more than a 40-hour-a-week job, but I love doing it. Speaking of St. Clair Software, where did this name come from? I used to live in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania. One Friday afternoon, I received my first really big order from a Fortune 100 company. They asked for a quote on company letterhead and all that. This was just a little side hobby at the time, so I hurriedly picked a name out of the air and designed a logo. The name stuck, though the logo fortunately didn't. Moving to the present, you could have made version 4.0 of Default Folder just an incremental update. Instead, it is so vastly overhauled as to feel almost like a new program. Where do you get the ideas for new features to add? Leopard provided both the impetus and opportunity to really improve Default Folder X. Default Folder X's appearance was getting dated, and the great graphical capabilities and HUD-interface style in Leopard inspired me to come up with the new translucent theme. (As an aside, I've gotten email from some people who like the old look better, so I've added an option in version 4.0.1, now in beta, to go back to a more traditional interface). I also took advantage of Leopard's new QuickLook feature to include previews and file information. Can you tell us about what new features to expect in the next major update? There will be further improvements to the preview and Get Info features. I'd like to track recently used files as well as folders (that's a huge change, actually). The user interface for the settings will get an upgrade. I'll also explore more sophisticated Spotlight tagging options, using different metadata tags rather than storing all keywords as comments. And as always, there will be new features I haven't even thought of yet. Leopard reportedly contains many more "under-the-hood" changes than previous OS X versions. Was it more difficult to upgrade Default Folder for Leopard than for Tiger? Yes, Leopard includes some major "under the hood" changes to the Open and Save dialogs. On the plus side, this allowed me to streamline things to speed it up significantly. However, it was also more difficult to implement these Leopard-related changes. Prior to 10.5, there were actually two completely different sets of Open and Save dialogs?one for Cocoa applications, and another for Carbon applications. In Leopard, Apple merged these (but still has two different programming API's calling them), and that required rethinking and rewriting some significant parts of Default Folder X. Any advice for users that have a problem with your software? I'd like to emphasize how important it is to give developers feedback, both positive and negative. If something doesn't work correctly, don't assume that the developer knows about it. You may have a unique configuration or some really oddball situation that our testing didn't uncover. We can't fix things that we don't know are broken, and just because it's broken on your system doesn't mean it's broken on any of ours (as a matter of fact, it probably isn't, or we wouldn't have released the software!) Yes, some software companies won't listen, but there are many of us that do, and that truly care that our software works well. I'd like to talk about a couple of more general shareware-related topics. Let's start with money. Back in the early days, getting paid for shareware was much more problematic that today. At least it seems so to me. There was no Web, no PayPal, or anything similar. Basically, people had to mail you a check or you didn't get paid. Do you find that the shareware model works better now that users can pay simply by making a few mouse-clicks? Oh definitely! Being able to set up a Web store or integrate an Internet-enabled sales process right into the product is far more efficient for the developer. And of course the ease of payment makes it much more likely that users will actually purchase the software they're using. These days DRM (digital rights management) is a hot topic. As I am sure you know, Steve Jobs has stated that he believes all music available on the Web should be free of copy restrictions. DRM is also relevant to shareware. That is, after one person purchases your software, they could give a copy of it (with the serial number, if needed) to anyone and everyone. Do you believe you lose a a significant amount of sales to such piracy? If so, what, if anything, do you believe should be done to minimize the loss? Yup, that's a very hot topic. I do lose a significant number of sales to piracy. Or let's put it this way: A significant number of people use pirated registration codes; I don't know whether they'd actually purchase the software otherwise. That's the flip side of everything being so accessible on the Internet?it's not only easier to pay for software, it's easier to steal it. The problem is that I personally find the more secure licensing/ activation schemes pretty onerous. Developers have to strike a balance between getting the revenue we need to stay in business vs. burdening our customers with ridiculous licensing and activation schemes. With Internet connections now ubiquitous, I think we're going to have to get used to "phone home" methods?where software checks periodically to make sure that it's legitimately licensed and that there aren't 6000 copies in use with the same serial number. At the same time, application X darned well better not yell at me if I reboot my computer from a different hard drive and run it again. Fight the big stuff, but cut all the honest, paying customers some slack. I couldn't agree more! Thanks again Jon for taking the time from your busy schedule to do this interview. And happy anniversary to Default Folder. Thank you for the opportunity to answer your questions, and for the time you took in putting them together. http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20080215093124333 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dave Sevick and I have been talking with John Anker @ the SHV Apple Store regarding scheduling the MUG meetings for 2008, and several things have come up we wanted to fill everyone in, and ask for your feedback. First, we've decided to only have one "Apple Store" MUG meeting a month - rather then two (one at each store). These will mostly be held at South Hills Village (especially at first while Shadyside is under renovations). The SHV meetings appear to be more popular, and the location has an easier parking experience. Once Shadyside is renovated and back online, we can discuss how we want to distribute the meetings between the two stores. Second is scheduling for the day/time. As most of you know, Sunday afternoon is becoming increasingly difficult to schedule for us and the SHV store. They tend to use Sunday for inventory, staff training, etc. Also, in the summer the mall kills the AC after 6pm, making it pretty uncomfortable. John has asked how we would feel about moving the meetings to a Saturday morning - say 10am. This would allow us to have a much more consistent and predictable schedule, but might be problematic for some people. It also has the negative of being during store hours (although the store traditionally slow Saturday morning). This requires presenters such as myself to be more circumspect in our topics and phrases. (For example, "no rumors" would be enforced) Third is location within the store. As most of you know, we've had a hard time lately finding a good place to have the meeting within the store. Fortunately, the renovation has helped resolve this - there is a nice new flat-panel HDTV attached to the AppleTV display, and John has kindly agreed to let us hook our laptops up to this large screen (much nicer then the screens behind the Genius Bar) so we can easily show cool stuff. This also means we're not at the Genius Bar (and competing with them for the space) but instead at our own "corner" where we can fit 30 or so people without much trouble. So, since these meetings are basically for you guys, Dave and I decided to first update you on what's going on, then ask for your opinion on the following suggestion: Hosting monthly MUG meetings at SHV on the forth Saturday of the month, 10am-11am @ the Apple Store - for official news, product reviews, main topics, Mac tips, questions, etc 11am-12pm @ the Roxy - lunch with "cocktail chatter" about unofficial stuff, rumors, rants, non-Apple news, and open discussions. Please think about this, and let Dave and I know if you would attend, love the idea, hate the idea, or think Saturday is great/horrible. Please email both Dave and I but do not post your opinion on the NPMUG listserv. Once we've gotten some feedback we'll post the results and go from there. Please try to respond within the next 3-4 days if possible. It's important to us that these meetings are both fun and convenient for as many of you as possible. Thanks for your time & patience. This happened a few days ago. Since I no longer have Apple Care Support, they directe me to articles and FAQs. So far none of the FAQ's I've read seem to address my problem. I now go to .Mac to access my e-mail on my PowerBook G4. Prior to that, Mail had been functioning well, but sometimes would be delayed in getting my e-mails address to my .Mac e-mail address. I have never changed my password for Mail, and it shares the same password I use when accessing .Mac mail through my web browswer (Safari). I also have 2 other e-mail address that are Comast (one address for me, one for my husband) which has been set up to forwards itself to the .Mac account accessed through Safari. I've always gotten all mail as set up in preferences to come to the Mail application. But now I'm getting a message in Mail that my password is rejected. Like I said, this happened out of the blue about 3 days ago. Any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks. (about 75%) So we're going to go ahead and make the change - SHV MUG meetings will now be held one Saturday a month. The first of these meetings is Saturday, March 15th at the South Hills Village Apple store starting at 10am. It'll run for an hour until 11am, at which point we'll retire to the Roxy for lunch and casual conversation. I'll work on a topic list and post it before hand :) Thanks to everyone for their patience as we sort all this out. Hopefully the new day and time will work out for everyone, and I'll see you all there. Charles -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... From Smalldog.com - getting data from RAM Canned Air and FileVault by Matt, matt at smalldog.com The Internet is abuzz with a story about freezing RAM to ?capture? its contents in order to obtain encryption keys. This technique is completely effective, and affects all computers and all operating systems--it?s an inherent limitation of RAM itself. RAM, or random access memory, is considered ?volatile? memory, because once removed from power, its data dissipates and the chip eventually becomes completely devoid of data. The data dissipates quite slowly with some memory, but very quickly in others. Non- volatile RAM is designed so that the data does not dissipate at all when removed from power. It was discovered early this week that simply freezing volatile RAM chips using a can of compressed air turned upside down can dramatically slow, or temporarily completely stop, the dissipation of data from RAM chips. I?m not going to describe the process here, but you can find videos and articles of the process all over the internet. The immediate implication for Mac users is that this reduces the efficacy of FileVault, Apple?s disk encryption system. Whenever data is encrypted, it is essentially locked, and can only be decrypted with a key. These encryption keys are generally long strings of letters and numbers, and are stored in RAM while the computer is powered on. When power is removed from the machine, the data dissipates slowly; when properly shut down or put to sleep, this data is erased. Freezing the RAM, removing it, and reinserting into another computer with special software, one can easily obtain the encryption key and access to encrypted files. This is one advantage of the MacBook Air: its RAM is soldered to the main logic board and can?t be removed without damaging the memory itself. The monthly Goodwill Computer Warehouse Sale opened with a busy start. Lots of folks were browsing the floor, and we had demos of five different Mac models from our rehabilitation efforts. The prices range from $10 for a PowerMac 5400/5500 loaded with kids' software, to an OS X.3 DV iMac for $120. There's three models in between... Nine Macs went out the door by lunchtime, until the snowy weather kept the folks away. The sale continues from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, and our work day also starts at 10:00. We added 16 Macs to the ready-to-ship shelves to bring our new all- time total to 1,129 Macs rehabilitated. I'll open the work area at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, and if you can get your driveways shoveled, I hope to see you there. Our only scheduled work day next week is Friday, March 7. We normally begin about 9:00 a.m., and we leave promptly at 4:30. You're welcome to come for the day, or for less if you can't budget the time. We promise not to go to Gino's for lunch again...
