iPhone sales

A Wall Street Journal article Monday quoted Apple CEO Steve Jobs as
predicting that sales from the App Store "could crest a half a billion
soon." In an interview with the Journal, Jobs predicted that software
sales for the device could turn into a $1 billion market at some
point, though he acknowledged that the company derives little in
profits from the sales of software over the App Store.

Super Monkey Ball

If you had any doubts as to the viability of Apple's iPhone as a
gaming platform, Sega has some numbers that might help change your
mind. In the 20 days following Super Monkey Ball's launch on the new
iPhone App Store, Sega reports over 300,000 copies of the game have
been purchased. Purchased, mind you - you don't get shipping numbers
on iPhone apps. That's nearly $3 million in revenue.

Russia vs. Georgia
I know I'm the only person who was completely freaked out by Russia's
cyber attack on Estonia last year. But I'm determined to share the
latest news.

As I'm sure you all know, Russia and Georgia are at war - but the
conflicted didn't start in South Ossetia - it started online.
Georgia's Internet presence has been under sustained attack for over 2
weeks now. Here's a detailed breakdown of the fighting so far:

http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1670

In recent news, it appears members of Estonia's CERT (formed after
their country was crippled in cyber warfare) have gone to Georgia to
help them fight the russian attacks. In addition, several critical
Georgian websites have been moved to Estonia, Poland, and the US.
(Amusingly, the Georgian president's website is now hosted by an ISP
in Atlanta)

The attacks aren't movie-grade hacking, simply DDoS strikes aimed at
disrupting communications.
A large chunk of the attacks depend on weaknesses in Windows and MS
SQL. I don't think I'm being flippant when I say such vulnerabilities
should be considered a matter of national security. Estonia and now
Georgia certainly think so.

Please take a moment to patch any machines you have lying around -
Macs included.

Fire at Apple HQ

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters have contained a blaze that has
burned for about three hours at the headquarters of computer maker
Apple.
The Santa Clara County Fire Department says the three-alarm fire has
burned the roof and the second level at one of the six buildings on
the computer company's northern California campus. It was contained
early Wednesday morning and no one was injured.
Senior Communications Dispatcher Rafael Salcedo says some flames
continue to burn in a hard-to-reach area under an air conditioner. He
says "the fire itself is not very big, but there is going to be a lot
of smoke damage."
The first reports of smoke came at about 10 p.m. Tuesday night, and
the fire was contained by 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
