Woo Hoo! A new record.... Today we refurbished a new daily record of 31 Macs for sale at Goodwill's ComputerWorks store. 30 were G3 slot-load DV iMacs and one was a G4 flat panel iMac. Our all-time total of refurbished Macs now stands at 1,338. We will gather again for our normal weekly work day on Friday, August 8. We will continue to attack the huge inventory from the Keystone Oaks School District. If you have any questions, please write or call.... Robert A. We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence." Apple exec Eddie Cue appears to taking the much maligned service under his wing (as well as the App Store, adding to his original gig as VP of iTunes), hopefully making good on the other bit in El Jobso's email where he resets Apple's call to action on .Mac's replacement: "The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services. And learn we will. The vision of MobileMe is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of this year." Hi! Try this... >From the list of radio stations in iTunes, click on the station that you want and drag it to your desktop. This will create an HTTP "Web Internet Location" file, on your desktop. Next, double-click on that HTTP file to open it in Safari. Instead of displaying a web page, Safari will download a very small file with an extension of .pls. This is an "Internet Audio Playlist" file and these contain the actual address that iTunes uses to connect to internet radio. Double-clicking on that file (the .pls one) will open iTunes and connect directly to the radio station. Now, just add the .pls file to your Login Items, in the Accounts System Preference, and, every time you start your Mac, iTunes will launch and automatically connect to your favorite radio station! Make sure to not delete the .pls file (you might want to store it in your Music folder), or this will not work. The key thing is to add the .pls file and NOT the http file to your Login Items. If you mistakenly add the http file, it will launch Safari, and download the .pls file, every single time. This all might sound complicated, but, trust me, it is pretty simple. :) Good luck...have fun! Today's tally was 21 iMacs, 19 OS X and 2 OS 9 models. This brings our all-time total to 1,370 Macs rehabilitated. Goodwill's ComputerWorks store on the South Side (2600 East Carson St.) is overflowing with the fruits of our efforts. Models include: ? OS 9.2.2 tray-load CD iMac for $39.00 or $25.00 in lots of five. ? OS X.3.9 slot-load CD IMac DV (400-500 mhz) for $79.00 or $50.00 in lots of five. ? OS X.3.9 slot-load CD iMac DV (600 mhz) for $99.00 or $75.00 in lots of five. ? OS X.3.9 Power Mac G4 Tower from $100.00. Monitor included. ? OS X.3.9 eMac (700 mhz) for $199.00 or $149.00 in lots of five. ? OS X.2.9 eMac (1.0 ghz) for $249.00 or $199.00 in lots of five. ? OS 9.2.2 Power Mac G3 Tower for $49.00. Monitor included. OS 9 Macs have a wide variety of educational software for children. OS X Macs have AppleWorks 6. Each Mac has had its hard drive erased and re-imaged with a clean OS. The CDs have been tested. Each Mac has a new logic board (PRAM) battery. OS X Macs have a minimum of 256 mb RAM. If you don't see it in the store, it's in storage on an upper floor and easily brought down. Please let your friends know of these great deals. They're ideal for anyone on a budget needing a reliable computer. We'll gather at Goodwill again next Friday, August 22. Hope to see you there. I probably never graduated from it. In attempting to set up Backup (downloaded from Apple -- .Me I believe), I attempted to "drag and drop" a folder to the custom screen (which said to "drag and drop" what I wanted to backup). I dragged thee "Documents" icon from the left column of the "Mac HD" screen -- that is the panel which also shows icons for "Desktop" my "home," "Music," "Pictures," and Music." In the panel or column below the one that lists "Network" and iDisk and any thing that I plug in by USB or put into the cd/DVD drive. Well, when I dragged the "Documents" icon to the spot on the backup screen and dropped . . . it went "poof." Literally -- a little cloud appeared and a sound and it disappeared. Now, I need that thing because it is how I find documents (I am Windows biased, despite attempting to learn Mac logic). Any help and (1) finding my Documents icon and getting it back to where it belongs and (2) helping me understand what happened would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ralph N.B. I'm told the metal detector that stood sentinel at the CRC's former Lawrenceville location has now been activated, and is screening people exiting the room where we work. Data security for the many hard disk drives that come from the computers being de-manufactured at the CRC is of paramount concern to Goodwill, and this is one of the measures they employ to assure no data escapes before the drives are properly wiped or destroyed. So, please make sure you exit through the metal detector on your way out of the room. Our experience in Lawrenceville tells us it's a pretty simple process. Hope to see you there! Robert A. It details the process used by the software "XP Antivirus" - and how it looks a LOT like regular Windows error messages and screens (when in fact it's evil incarnate and wants your credit card). I've personally seen this installed on several machines, and wish I could find some way to convince people to be more suspicious. This is not "obviously a bad software package" - it looks very very real. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/22/anatomy_of_a_hack/ Right now we don't have anything like this for OSX (The closest is the fake Quicktime codec trojan) but it's coming.
