To record their war, from private reflections to real-time footage of improvised explosive device (IED) attacks on the ground, director Deborah Scranton (The War Tapes) creates a "virtual embed," supplying cameras to the soldiers of the Bad Voodoo Platoon and working with them to shape an intimate portrait that reveals the hard grind of their war. Says Scranton: "What compels me is telling a story from the inside out, to crawl inside their world with them to see what it looks like, feels like and smells like. It's really important to give soldiers the chance to press their own record button on this war." Through their daily experiences, acting platoon leader Sgt. 1st Class Toby Nunn, originally from British Columbia and the father of three, andSpc. Jason Shaw, a 23-year-old from Texas, give us a firsthand look at the impact of the U.S. military's policy of multiple deployments to Iraq and how the Army's role has changed on the ground. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/badvoodoo/ From marc at soraccophoto.com Fri Apr 4 06:50:13 2008 From: marc at soraccophoto.com (Marc Soracco) Date: Fri, 4 Apr 2008 08:50:13 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] System Question Message-ID: <2AE5F32D-A93C-4319-92F5-A82783C307D5@soraccophoto.com> Greetings Folks I have a question regarding my system on my MacBook Pro. While inspecting my drive yesterday I noticed that there was file marked "Previous System" On closer inspection I noticed that it consumed over 20 gb of drive space! First off I am not sure how it got there and second, what would happen to my computer if I trashed it? Any thoughts? The files are in the root directory of the main hard drive and are marked as Previous Systems and there are two of them at a bit over 10 gb each. I want that drive space back if there is no reason to keep them. Let me know what you think about trashing them please. Thanks in advance. Today we rehabilitated our last Macintosh in Goodwill's Computer Recycling Center building in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood. If you're keeping track, it was a Graphite 350 mhz G4 Tower, the 1,162nd Mac we've rehabilitated. Our remaining work days in April and May will be spent packing our stuff for the CRC's move to the Goodwill building at 26th and Carson St. on Pittsburgh's South Side. In case you don't know the details, Goodwill was unsuccessful in purchasing the Lawrenceville building from Roomful Express Furniture. UPMC outbid Goodwill by a large sum, and the building will be demolished to provide employee parking for the new Children's Hospital being built just up the hill in Pittsburgh's Bloomfield. Goodwill must be out by June 1. Today, we spent our time packing and disconnecting our wonderful network and G5 Xserve. As of 1:30 this afternoon, we no longer have an Internet connection or the ability to NetBoot FireWire Macs for imaging. Next weekend will the final Computer Warehouse Sale for this building, and we've got 12 different Mac models ranging from $10 to $350 ready for sale. We also have older Apple LaserWriters in three classes available. I sent a list out in last week's note; if you'd like another, please contact me off list at my address below. The sale hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 11, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 12. We hope you can join us those two days for our decidedly non- technical job of packing our stuff and making sure our remaining inventory gets wrapped on pallets. This time, there are forklifts! I can guarantee there won't be a blizzard as there was when we moved from Ambridge, and hopefully there won't be a repeat of the unfortunate Mary Jo Smiley incident..... :-) -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The printers will be available at the Computer Warehouse Sale this Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. There are three classes of printers, and will be priced at $15, $20, and $25. Each printer has a test sheet showing the condition of the output, and a count of how many copies have been printed. The toner level in each printer is unknown. Each printer is supported in OS X. A list of available model ranges was sent to the list on March 28. The low-end printers require an AppleTalk connector, and the high-end printers have ethernet. The low-end printers would require an AppleTalk-to-ethernet adapter to work on a newer Mac. If you'd like us to save you a printer, we'll select one in the class you indicate and it will be held from the sales floor. It's important you appear at the sale to pay for it. If it's still sitting around early Saturday afternoon, Goodwill will move it to the sales floor. Robert A. OfficeTime's latest release (version 1.3) now offers full Leopard compatibility with iCal synchronization for a visual display of your workday. iCal synchronization continues to be supported on Tiger and older versions of Mac OS X. iCal Integration A report of your time is one thing. A visual display of what you've been working on is empowering. See all of your trackable time laid out inside iCal automatically with seamless synchronization with OfficeTime. You can just as easily make an appointment or block off time in iCal, and OfficeTime intuitively filters it back to the appropriate project. What could be simpler? This is true calendar synchronization. You don't just export or import from iCal like many other products. Make an event in iCal and it appears instantly in OfficeTime. Edit the event in either program and your change is automatically reflected in both. Using iCal's Day View, you can visually see missing gaps in your day from your OfficeTime recordings. Make a quick adjustment or add a missing event and your changes are automatically updated to OfficeTime. OfficeTime will even apply the correct category and hourly rate based on the project calculating your billables for the day, week or month. Once in iCal, Apple's Sync can send a record of your time to your iPod, iPhone or other handheld devices. So, when you are on the go, you are still in sync. With 2-way synchronization, OfficeTime easily updates changes made out of the office back into your project. In keeping with OfficeTime's overall design philosophy, you don't have to think about iCal synchronization. It just works. Intuitively and invisibly. OfficeTime Version 1.3 offers over 20 new features, improvements and fixes available free to all current users. OfficeTime is available for both Mac and Windows machines and data can be moved seamlessly between both. After reading the "Windows Collapsing" article, I noted that Ina Fried's column todayspeaks to refurbishment and redeployment of computers in Columbia. This resonates highly with our efforts with Goodwill's Computer Recycling Center. Though older computers are not adequate for all purposes, they are far from useless. Colombia's education minister indicates the real differentiator is whether a given system can connect to the Internet in an adequate way. Older students need that access: elementary school kids can benefit from the non-connected older machines. This is VERY much the pattern that we are seeing at the CRC, ComputerWorks, and the Warehouse Sale. Your help is needed at both ends of the process: please donate Macs that have outlived their usefulness in your home or school, and please come to the warehouse sale for insanely great bargains on still-viable Macs and printers! Will also stream Title, and Album cover. You can also control the iTunes music via the Apple TV (with the remote). Also supports streaming radio. - Login to Youtube now supported, with subscriptions and favorites - Fastforward and rewind performance has been improved - You still need a TV that can accept Component or HDMI - Anecdotal reports of better decoding performance. - 1080p signal output, but max resolution Apple TV can display is still 720p - Apple TV Setup Manual (PDF) posted. - The Apple TV hardware remains the same. This is a software upgrade only. - HD Movie Previews not necessarily representative of rental quality. And finally .... after installation and testing .... it did not fix my specific problem of video difficulty with signal loss after switching to another source ... such as a TV .... and back to the Apple TV. A hard restart by unplug and replug does work. Note: The Apple TV does work on my Magnavox 26" HDTV .... no problems. So it is hardware specific .... and not everyone has issues like mine. :-) Yes, I have issues :-) Dave From fozard at nauticom.net Tue Apr 15 16:33:00 2008 From: fozard at nauticom.net (Fozard) Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2008 18:33:00 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] Macbook Thief Caught by the 'Book's Camera Message-ID: <48052D1C.20608@nauticom.net> Not Big Brother, but Big Sister........nice work!!! http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2008/04/15/using-back-to-my-mac-to-catch-a-thief/ From charles at firthconsulting.com Thu Apr 17 05:48:29 2008 From: charles at firthconsulting.com (Charles Firth) Date: Thu, 17 Apr 2008 07:48:29 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] Popular Mechanics tests Macs vs PCs Message-ID: <29BD31D8-8B1D-4A9F-8404-A82AE9D197E5@firthconsulting.com> A test geared towards simple users (not super-geeks) Skipping to the end: The Verdict: Apple Mac: In both the laptop and desktop showdowns, Apple?s computers were the winners. Oddly, the big difference didn?t come in our user ratings, where we expected the famously friendly Mac interface to shine. Our respondents liked the look and feel of both operating systems but had a slight preference toward OS X. In our speed trials, however, Leopard OS trounced Vista in all-important tasks such as boot- up, shutdown and program-launch times. We even tested Vista on the Macs using Apple?s platform-switching Boot Camp software?and found that both Apple computers ran Vista faster than our PCs did. PC: Simply put, Vista proved to be a more sluggish operating system than Leopard. Our PCs installed some software faster, but in general they were slower in our time trials. Plus, both PCs showed weaker performance on third-party benchmarks than the Macs. Our biggest surprise, however, was that PCs were not the relative bargains we expected them to be. The Asus M51sr costs the same as a MacBook, while the Gateway One actually costs $300 more than an iMac. That means for the price of the Gateway you could buy an iMac, boost its hard drive to match the Gateway?s, purchase a copy of Vista to boot?and still save $100. http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/reviews/4258725.html?page=1 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I wanted to let you all know that our Apple User Group acceptance by the people of Goodwill Industries of Pittsburgh into the computer recycling system has provided us accelerated growth more than we ever imagined as we struggled with 4 little classrooms a little over a year ago at the Center For Hope in Ambridge, PA. March 30, 2007 was our first day at the CRC and a little over a year later ..... around May 1, 2008 or so ... we'll be moving from this enormous 70,000 square foot warehouse. Sigh ............... I wanted to take a moment to thank some key people from Goodwill for taking us under their wings ..... Does anyone know if 10.3.9 will run a newer version of Preview? I know it WILL NOT RUN Preview 4.1, which comes with OS 10.5.2----- Advice much appreciated! Flacc -- Flaccus M. B. Unlikely. Apple tends not to back-port technologies to older versions of the OS. I have a photo of Jeffrey Carpenter, a volunteer firefighter, his mac , and firetruck; also Jan Allen, webmaster of the National Aviary, with her mac and Simon a juvenile penguin in the photos. You can have a photo added to this upcoming page. We are cheerfully waiting to hear from you. I was : ) given this assignment at the last North Pittsburgh Users Group Meeting on April 9, 2008. It will only succeed if others join in the fun. Don't reply to the list serve as this goes out to everyone. Our principal task will be to build pallets of the iMacs we have not had the opportunity to work on yet so they can be shipped to the South Side. There are several pallets currently there, but they're only stacked two- or three- high. We'll need to re-build them four- high with 30 iMacs so we can maximize the meager storage space available on the South Side. We perfected the technique last week, so all we have to do is stack and wrap. I'm told there will be trucks running from Lawrenceville to the South Side at least a couple of times on Friday. My personal cell phone is still kaput, so if you need to reach me please call 412-779-5860 temporarily. Hope to see you there! Robert A.
