Change fast for a matter of fact. VERY fast. We started building the Zune in 1990, however with R&D put to use on our very popular, but overwhelmingly virus-prone, operating system, Windows, we felt the need to wait until the time was right for us. 2005 seemed like the right time. As we looked at the Zune, we realized that 15 years previous, it was a product way ahead of its time. In fact, people wouldn't have known what to do with it. But since we have invested so much effort into keeping our Windows operating system from crashing every PC it has ever been installed on, I couldn't justify investing another hour or two into the Zune. So, rather than spend $10 an hour on someone who could have thought out the Zune just a little bit better, and also, told us that "squirt" wouldn't neccesarily be seen as a great word to use, I gave the green light to put Zune on the market. Technology changes. The Zune is a game-changer. What it has done is made the iPod look absolutely brilliant, and therefore has changed the game of Apple. Not what we were looking for. If I had it to do over again, we would have thought out the Zune better, more clearly, and then, after all the hours of thought put into it, we would have taken it outside headquarters and ran over it with my car. That is how bad the Zune really is. (Fact is, I love iTunes and my iPod, wondered who would actually buy a Zune anyways) So, I want to apologize to you early adopters who purchased a product that is not as good as Apple's iPod. If we can't do it right, and be number one, we really shouldn't have done it at all. So, to provide you something in return for your patience and your hard-earned $249 being spent on the Zune, we are going to offer you a certificate good for your free copy of Microsoft Vista. Please be advised that this has problems, and you will redeem at your own risk. And please, even though it isn't as good as Apple's product, again, we ask for your continued loyalty as you spend your money with us. Thank you again. And SPECIAL thanks to our Queen of the RAM Testing Machine, Mary Jo Smiley, who cranked out incredible bunches of RAM on Thursday for us to pop into our newly-refurbished Macs. We slogged through a pile of tray-load iMacs today, finding too many with bad CDs that will sit on a shelf until we can find replacement CDs. Our inventory of bad-CD iMacs is growing uncomfortably large. We managed to get a dozen Macs up and running. And a good thing too. By 3:00 p.m. today, Goodwill had sold 20 of our refurbished iMacs on the first day of the monthly computer warehouse sale. This compares with 18 iMacs sold in three days at the last warehouse sale. We have three models at the sale: ? Tray-load CD iMacs with OS 9.2.2 for $50.00. ? Blue-and-White G3 Towers with OS 9.2.2, a 14-inch Dell monitor and ADB keyboard for $99.00. Each machine has 256 mb RAM and a 6.0 gb hard drive. ? Firewire iMacs with OS X.3.9 for $140-$160, depending on hard drive size. Each machine has 384 mb RAM. The sale continues on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Our Mac workshop will be open for any of you who wish to come in and help out, or just pay a visit. We're more than happy to show you around our wonderful new work area. I'll be there at 9:00 a.m. to get the work day rolling in the workshop. As always, there's something for everyone to do. You don't have to be a Mac techno-geek to help us help Goodwill refurbish Macs for them to sell. We turn out great machines at bargain prices, and they are increasingly in demand as the word of our value Macs spread. The Goodwill Computer Recycling Center is at 55 55th St. in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood, just a block off Butler St. You can check with your friend, for detailed directions. Robert A. Fruit-flavor iMacs we've rehabilitated are literally flying out the doors of Goodwill. And with them are the stock of hockey-puck mice that was the standard Apple-issued mouse for these machines. The Macs that come to Goodwill do not always arrive with keyboards or mice, particularly mice. So the mice we do have go out the door with the fixed Macs, leaving the shelf increasingly empty. We now have less than a dozen left following this week's Goodwill Computer warehouse sale. As long-time Mac users, we all had a love-hate relationship with this model mouse. It was really cute and looked great. But as a mouse for a real Mac user, it, well..., it sucked. And most, if not all, of us disconnected it and put it in the drawer to use another type. Or it went into a box that's now in your basement or garage. Well, now you can do a service to humankind by rescuing your hockey- puck mouse, or ANY USB mouse for that matter, and passing it along to us. We really need them, and who knows, it just might get into the hands of someone with small enough fingers to actually use it without wondering why it got out the door in Cupertino. I mean, was Jonathan Ive on vacation that week, or what? Thank you for your attention, and you may now resume playing World of Warcraft, Sim Whatever, or solitaire. Robert A. I have used Talk Shoe for several voice conferences with great success .... and it is FREE ! Dave News Release TalkShoe Launches ShoePhone Internet Voice Service Unlimited Free Group Calling with Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime Pittsburgh, PA ? September 11, 2007 ? TalkShoe?, the leader in Internet topic-based voice conversations, discussions and live interactive podcasts, today announced the general availability of ShoePhone, an easy to use service for unlimited group calling with anyone, anywhere, anytime. Up to 250 people can participate in a live call (which TalkShoe calls Talkcasts?), and 1,000s more can listen to the simultaneous live Internet audio stream. Users can also simultaneously text-chat, and Talkcasts can be recorded and stored on TalkShoe?s website for later listening and podcasting. Talkcasts can be done instantly, or scheduled in advance. ShoePhone is Free to use. ShoePhone uses voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology to create calls. However, unlike other VoIP services, ShoePhone users can connect with other ShoePhone users as well as to people using standard telephones, mobile phones, other VoIP services such as Skype, and 3rd party VoIP clients such as SJphone and Gizmo. This is because ShoePhone is based on a telco-grade conferencing system unlike other server-based VoIP- only services which have limited conferencing capabilities. ?People want to talk. And people want to talk about something,? said Dave Nelsen, CEO and founder of TalkShoe. ?TalkShoe and ShoePhone together are a great tool for social networking. Our goal is to bring topic-based interactive voice discussions to the masses.? ShoePhone is deeply integrated with TalkShoe?s award-winning software ? TalkShoe Live?, where people can simultaneously talk, text-chat, and stream audio over the Internet. TalkShoe hosts and discussion leaders are in control with features such as see-who?s-talking indication, voice muting, text-chat censoring, and request-to-talk queuing. TalkShoe also has created numerous web widgets for people to easily integrate any live and recorded Talkcasts into their social networking websites including MySpace, Facebook, TypePad, Friendster, Webwag, Netvibes and Windows Live. "ShoePhone makes connecting with TalkShoe quick and easy,? commented Aaron Brauser, Vice President of Product Management at TalkShoe. ?There?s no need to enter IDs, phone numbers, or IP addresses ? just use a headset and a PC or Mac.? About TalkShoe TalkShoe connects people and organizations using live and recorded podcasts (we call them Talkcasts). Anyone can listen, and anyone can become the host of their own Internet talk show. Uses include live talk shows, discussion groups, podcasts, conferences and friends and family chats. Live Talkcasts can be accessed using either phone or computer. Talkcasts are also recorded and available on the TalkShoe website where users can listen to and podcast using iTunes and iPods, or other MP3 players. What?s more, people can make money hosting Talkcasts. TalkShoe is located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and can be reached at 724-935-TALK (8255) or by email at info at talkshoe.com The website address is www.talkshoe.com TalkShoe Members and Friends, We wanted you to be the first to know about an important announcement TalkShoe is making today about our new ShoePhone service. We generated $2,069.76 for Goodwill this last weekend of Sept 7-8, 2007 The staff on the floors of the warehouse, the sales people in the South Side Store, and the Goodwill senior mangement .... all the way up to CEO - Mike Smith .... have expressed to me directly how much they truly appreciate all of us being there as volunteers generating some new excitement , and some and unexpected cash from the Apples that people almost completely ignored for many years ... .... we always get a kick out of people asking the Apple volunteers ..... "why do you do this work for free? .... what is in it for you ? " It is not "for us" ... that is the key .... it is for the "least of our brothers" ... just very simple community service ... and people get great satisfaction working for this cause. There are many of you who come in each week ... one guy all the way from Ohio ( thanks Charlie Hutchens ) ... to serve on this mission ... As a team, led primarily by the energy and planning skills of Bob Donaldson, we have done some pretty amazing things ... and that is what separates us from profit-making ventures .... we don't do it to derive a profit ... just to break even with costs ..... We are now peaking at over 880 computers recycled and placed back into deeply appreciative, low income, mostly unemployed people's hands. If only a single "dumpster-destined" Apple computer causes someone to be inspired to learn a skill and get a good job ... we have done our work. If one less water stream is poisoned ... we have done our work. As CEO - Mike Smith relayed to us a few weeks ago at the "One Million Pound" press event ( where Goodwill celebrated the 1,000,000th pound of recycled computers ) : "... please keep it up and tell your Apple folks we do notice, in our financial reports, what you have done to help us ... and wish your Apple groups the best ...." Thanks very much from me also .... :-) Dave P.S. The next Computer Warehouse Sale is Friday Oct 5 - Saturday Oct 6 in Lawrenceville .... P.S.S. We begin hosting large visiting groups ( like schools and churches) for recycling after December 2007 ... please contact any one of us ASAP to reserve a date during a weekday ... or on the first Saturday each month. Today, we made our 900th refurbished Mac available to Goodwill's ComputerWorks store. We also took in a wonderful corporate donation of several Graphite G4 Towers today. They are in great condition and we should be able to wipe the drives and fix them quickly to get them into the ComputerWorks store. Many thanks to Charlie Hutchens, Rich Fitzgibbon and Dave Sevick for joining me today. Alas, our summer sauna is now gone. We can work without sweating now :-) Now that the trucking company has moved from the building where the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center is located, a space has opened in the front of the building where Goodwill will now permanently locate the monthly computer warehouse sale. It will save a great deal of labor since it will save time setting up and tearing down the sales area. The next Goodwill Computer Warehouse Sale is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5, and Saturday, Oct. 6. But on a broader scale .... here is what the world is doing to recycle and eliminate e-waste ...... =================== http://rethink.ebay.com/ Rethink: Fresh Ideas for a Cleaner World eBay and fellow members of the Rethink Initiative are applying some fresh thinking to the problem of e-waste Faster, more advanced computers, cell phones and electronics offer endless possibilities for enrichment, learning and entertainment. But as consumers and businesses keep pace with the introduction of exciting new products, we are faced with a mounting challenge: what to do with the products we?re upgrading from. It?s no small issue. Hundreds of millions of retired computers, cell phones and electronics sit idle or are discarded by Americans every year. We need to make smart choices about what we do with these products to help ensure a clean environment for future generations. Rethink: A new approach The Rethink Initiative brings together industry, government and environmental organizations to offer a fresh perspective and new answers to the challenge of e-waste. On this site you can find information, tools and solutions that make it easy ? and even profitable ? to find new users for idle computers and electronics, and responsibly recycle unwanted products. eBay and the Rethink Initiative: A natural combination eBay recognizes that its member community of more than 157 million computer users can be a powerful force for good. Educating and enabling them to take action to reduce e-waste is good for the environment. eBay?s heritage is also about bringing buyers and sellers together ? making it easy for people with idle computers and electronics to find others who can put them to good use. Putting old products to new use extends their useful life and delays their entry into the waste stream. ========================= Apple continues it's recycling program ........ http://www.apple.com/environment/recycling/program/index.html Apple Recycling Program Purchase any qualifying Apple computer or monitor and receive free recycling of your old computer and monitor ? regardless of manufacturer. It?s easy being green Apple?s commitment to being a responsible environmental citizen includes working to ensure that electronic equipment is properly disposed of at the end of its useful life. Apple?s free computer recycling program makes it easy for you to play a role in helping to protect the environment. 1. Purchase. When you purchase any qualifying Apple computer or monitor from either a retail Apple Store or the online Apple Store, you now have the option to participate in the Apple Recycling program. 2. Opt in. When you make a purchase through the online Apple Store, you will be given the opportunity to opt into the Apple Recycling Program. For the retail Apple Store, a Mac Specialist will offer the option to participate at the point of sale. 3. Print the email. After you opt in, Apple will send you an email with instructions on how to recycle your old equipment for free. For online Apple Store customers, the email will be sent once your new equipment ships. Print out this email, as you?ll need it later. 4. Package. Package your recycled computer and monitor in a box or carton appropriate for ground transportation. Must be packed to ensure product will not shift or break. You must place CPUs and monitors into two separate boxes. Securely seal each box. Weight limit per package is less than 70 lbs. Today we tested 26 Apple 17-inch CRTs (10 VGA, 16 ADC), finding 11 in working condition. We also refurbished eight Macs, bringing our total to date to 913. It's hard to believe we'll be producing our 1,000 refurbished Mac before the end of the year. Our efforts in the past two weeks has built the stock of Graphite G4 Towers at the Goodwill ComputerWorks Store on the South Side significantly. When they pickup what we've done today, they will have 11 G4 systems ready for sale. Next Friday and Saturday (October 5 and 6) is the monthly Computer Warehouse Sale at the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center, 55 55th St. in Pittsburgh Lawrenceville neighborhood. Friday hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday hours at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Goodwill will have three models of our refurbished Macs at the sale: 1. Tray-load CD iMacs with 64-96 mb RAM running OS 9.2.2 for $50.00. 2. Slot-load CD iMacs with 384 mb RAM running OS 10.3.9 for $140- $160, depending on hard drive size and optical drive capability. 3. Blue & White G3 Towers with 256 mb RAM running OS 9.2.2 for $99.00. The package includes a 14-inch Dell VGA monitor. Our workspace is open for our volunteers on Saturday, October 6 during the hours of the sale. We've got something for everyone to do, so don't be shy about paying us a visit. Robert A. I am familiar with iPhoto but wondering if there are any advantages to switching over to Bridge. I appreciate any comments. shelley -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://davesevick.com/pipermail/npmug/attachments/20070929/15b23b3a/attachment.htm
