You have waited these many weeks and YES, the Goodwill CRC Warehouse Sale has Mac laptops! No, they're not MacBook Pro's. Instead there is a modest quantity of iBook Clamshells, and one mighty Wallstreet. All are running OS 9, with MS Office 98, Apple Works, and a plethora of educational and game titles. All come with tested UFO power adapters. But such deals! - The Wallstreet is $100. (Such memories!) Battery life: marginal - iBook 300 MHz Clamshells with used-but-viable batteries are $225. (These batteries are holding 75% or more of their original 4 hour charge.) - iBook 300 MHz Clamshells with BRAND NEW NewerTech batteries are $300. (The battery alone is a $118 value, and has 50% more storage capacity than the Apple original.) All of these systems are Airport-ready: add an original Apple Airport ( 802.11b) for only $65! (Ask for Bob Donaldson regarding this option.) Saturday's times are 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Get there before they're gone! - Marty the Clam Guy -- No trees were killed in the sending of this message. There are widespread (and my first-hand experiences) with many people losing data by not following the oldest rule .... please backup. With Leopard under use for just one week ( 7 days ) now, I can personally report six successful installs of 10.5 and two failed installs due to "bad" install DVD's leading to multiple problems with logins and keychains. These clients that had failed installs did what I call "diving in" and just updated Tiger 10.4 to Leopard 10.5. I would highly recommend you follow the threads of these discussions: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=375594 http://www.macfixit.com/ http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/leopard/ Finally, I think Leopard rocks !!!!! We were able to have a Saturday work day this week as the monthly Goodwill Computer Warehouse sale was going on. We've now refurbished 950 Macs. Thanks to Marty Swartz' efforts, mostly in his home, we've begun to deliver Mac laptops for sale at Goodwill. This week, three OSX.3 iBooks went to the Goodwill ComputerWorks store on the South Side and a dozen OS 9.2 iBooks debuted on the Computer Warehouse Sale shelves. Dave has already reported how much our efforts have contributed to Goodwill at this week's sale. Thanks to generous friends, we have money on account at Goodwill that allows the purchase of laptop batteries and AC power adapters that allows us to get these highly sought after Mac laptops to people for a reasonable price. Our next scheduled work day is Friday, November 9. We'd be delighted if any of you could join us! Robert A. But here's the scoop: The original Nov. meeting was Nov. 25th, which is Thanksgiving weekend, and bad for both me and the store. Pushing it up a week to the 18th was no good because that's Simon Mall's Night of Giving and the mall won't let us in without an invite. Besides, the store is still in renovations and may not be done by the 18th, Pushing it up another week makes it this Sunday, which is too short a notice. So I pushed it back a week to Dec 2nd. As for the December meeting (originally the 23rd) - well, that's the weekend right before Christmas and I'm pretty sure we'll all have better things to do. And the mall runs extended hours then, so we wouldn't be able to start until later, or try and work on running the meeting during store hours. (not good, since it's gonna be crowded) So there will be only one meeting until the end of the year - Dec 2nd at 6pm I'll post an agenda about a week in advance, but I'm 90% sure I'm going to be showing off OSX Server 10.5 (and trust me on this, Leopard server is AWESOME for both big companies and small/medium businesses, and indispensable for schools, creative companies, and anyone who's serious about podcasting or media) And I'm sure we'll all have Leopard stories by then. :) Thanks for everyone's patience during the holiday season. Basically, it's all to do with copying the image file. (Like with a backup) With the older Sparse Disk Image, the image file was one big file - so if you changed it at all, the entire file needed to be copied to backup the changes. So say you have a 6GB encrypted disk image file full of vital client data (Like I do) and you need to back it up (or Time Machine needs to back it up). If you add one small 60k Word file to the disk image, then the image file has changed - and the entire 6GB file needs to be recopied to your backup. With the new Sparse Bundle Disk Image, the image file is stored in segmented blocks "bundled" together. So if you add that 60k Word document to the disk image, it'll only affect one small (usually 8MB or so) block of the image. OSX (and Time Machine) can see that just the one block changed, so the backup only needs to copy that block. So the syncing (TM or rsync or whatever) only copies 8MB of the file over, rather then the full 6GB. What's particularly clever about this is the file copy security. It's not decrypting your data, mounting the copy of the image file, copying the unencrypted data over, and unmounting the image file. Oh no... it's simply copying that 8MB block of encrypted data. So the data stays encrypted throughout the file copy, and stays encrypted on the backup. This is wonderful if you're backing up over a network or to your iDisk or something. If you have large encrypted Sparse Disk Image files, I strongly recommend converting them to Sparse Bundle files... the only negative is they're only readable in Leopard - so if you copy them to Tiger or earlier, never mind :) (I haven't actually tried to open a Sparse Bundle on Tiger, so it might work to mount, etc. but the clever syncing will definitely not work) BTW, this is also why, if you are using File Vault in Tiger and upgrade to Leopard it throws up a warning about having to convert your File Vault home directory to the "new Leopard version" - it's converting the disk image to a Sparse Bundle. We will prepare for gift delivery immediately following breakfast and will then send volunteers out with gifts and ground beef to more than 100 local needy households. It is a wonderful Christmas gift not only to our clients but to those who volunteer their time that day. It is truly a joy to be able to give to those in need at this time of year. Plus, our gift shop will be open in the morning if you are looking for a unique gift of your own. If you would like to be a part of this day, please contact Amy Firek at 724-770-0262. Happily, though, the problem is not in your Mac. The spammer has spoofed the message, using YOUR address as the erstwhile originator of the message. The "payload" of the spam message was probably a URL pointing to their sell-something-fraudulent site. What you are seeing is bounce-backs from addresses that do not exist, or who are on vacation. This is all taking place elsewhere, NOT on your machine, so there is probably nothing to be done, other than ignore them. I'm the webmaster for a .ORG, and occasionally we get bursts of similar delivery failure notifications. I stand by my prediction that the person who creates a spam-proof fraud-proof email protocol, and gets the world to adopt it, will win a Nobel prize. It's been an amazing week with 32 beige Powermac 5400/5500 models imaged for OS 9.1 and headed for Hosanna Industries' holiday gift effort. We started this project from scratch just a week ago. The final touches -- "putting lipstick on the pig" -- were performed by John Hamill and Sallie Boggs, carefully cleaning the cases of the soon-to-be gift Macs. This effort would not have been possible if not for Charles Firth's ingenious method of creating a boot image CD that employs the venerable Apple Software Restore program to erase a hard drive and create a new bootable drive from a compressed image. It sounds so simple, but if you try to think about the process of doing it yourself, you MAY go nuts... We're begun to receive requests for older Mac parts from inquiries at the Goodwill ComputerWorks store on Pittsburgh's South Side, and everyone who's inquired about a part has received an answer this week. We're awaiting more specifics from some people to better identify just exactly what they need to get their old Mac running again. It appears we're the only source of old Mac parts within a few hundred miles of Pittsburgh. We'll be taking next Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, as a day off as the CRC will be closed. Our next work day will be Friday, November 30, which also happens to be the first day of the monthly Goodwill Computer Warehouse sale. We'll also be working on Saturday, December 1, while the sale continues. Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday! Robert A. One of our clients (of course, on PCs), is complaining that all of our e-mails from our company are coming in at 5.5 pt. Arial type. All the computers in our shop (all Mac) are set to send e-mail at 12 point Arial as a default. What could the problem possibly be? The client is using Outlook 2003 through an Exchange Server. OK, so this long time Led Zeppelin #1 fan, fully re-energized by the emergence on the iTunes scene, wanted to blast his music oh so inappropriately loud over his home stereo system ... located in the other room in my house. Hmmmmm? Time for a little AirTunes set-up ! You'll need: - stereo receiver or radio with an available audio input ( red + white ) left+right. - a audio cable (((( 1/8th inch mini <----> composite RCA left +right ))) - Apple Airport Express - iTunes on your Mac or PC with AirTunes enabled .... step by step here : http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/airtunes.html So you can control the music in your home through iTunes , over an Airport Express patched into your stereo system. Because of this, I'll need to know who is attending dinner no later then 7:05pm on Sunday - basically, I'm going to ask for a show of hands at the beginning of the meeting, so we can tell them how many to expect. The agenda: Mac OSX Server 10.5 Special! Come see the new OSX Server software - upgraded core services, enhanced support, and some really nice new features for shared Calendars, Wikis, Blogs, and Podcasting. There are a lot of really good reasons your business/school/whatever will want to consider moving to Leopard Server. Most notably, if you do any kind of video work - streaming, podcasting, etc. I'll try not to go too far into the cool but obscure technical stuff, and focus on the end results for the users, but feel free to ask me anything you like about the "under the hood" changes. I promise you'll be impressed with the new server software. You'll want one at your house :) I hope to see everyone there! OK, maybe not earth- shattering, but it was new to me. ;) -D From fozard at nauticom.net Thu Nov 29 19:42:31 2007 From: fozard at nauticom.net (Fozard) Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 21:42:31 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] PC MAG's Oliver Rist - Rant on Leopard Message-ID: <474F7897.8090506@nauticom.net> Slam, Bam - This guy's really unhappy: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2223921,00.asp From cuzinbruce at fastermac.net Thu Nov 29 20:24:35 2007 From: cuzinbruce at fastermac.net (CuZin) Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 22:24:35 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] PC MAG's Oliver Rist - Rant on Leopard In-Reply-To: <474F7897.8090506@nauticom.net> References: <474F7897.8090506@nauticom.net> Message-ID: I have Leopard on one of my machines but I'm still waitin' 'til I quit getting those unexpected quits when waking and also what's this problem my has MacBook with the wireless since 10.4.10 came along. Seems lots of folks are having that and nobody seems to care. Check out this thread on the discussion board. It's real long and troubling. It has given me plenty of fits and Leopard didn't fix it. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=970070> CuZinBruce On Nov 29, 2007, at 9:42 PM, Fozard wrote: > Slam, Bam - This guy's really unhappy: > > http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2223921,00.asp > _______________________________________________ > NPMUG mailing list > NPMUG at davesevick.com > http://davesevick.com/mailman/listinfo/npmug From marty.swartz at gmail.com Fri Nov 30 07:59:42 2007 From: marty.swartz at gmail.com (Marty Swartz) Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2007 09:59:42 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] A feature of Preview I never knew about... The capability of embedded HTML links (and inter-document links) has been there since Hector was a pup. My favorite capability is the "searchable image" sub-format, which is not really a separate format as such, but simply the clever arrangement of a full-size image of the original page, with a complete set of matching OCR text placed "behind" the image. This lets you do full-text searching of a scanned multi-page document, (or collection of documents!) while still seeing the original page. It's really cool to read hundred-year-old books and references, with their distinctive type faces and layout intact. You can almost smell the paper. Straight conversion into modern fonts and computer-perfect layout destroys this appealing historical character. So, what you saw was due to better "print to PDF" capability of Safari, (or the OSX print engine), rather than a capability of Preview itself. Annual Gift Delivery Day is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, 2007. We will begin the morning with a continental breakfast in the Artisans of Nazareth building on our campus at 8:30 AM. It is very important to know how many volunteers we can expect for this day. We would be so happy to have you join us. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
