Hello.

I found this in a FAQ at apple:

Question: Can I use other applications, like QuickTime or Windows  
Media Player, to send sound to AirPort Express via AirTunes?
Answer: At this time Apple only supports sending one AirTunes stream  
to AirPort Express via iTunes 4.6 or later.

I'd love to know if anybody has a workaround for this.  I have a  
subscription that only streams windows media and i have the Flip4Mac  
plug in

so it plays from QT but would like to send it to another set of  
speakers in another room (the subscription doesn't allow downloading  
content, just streaming).

Have you tried AirFoil?  We use it here at North Allegheny to send music
compositions to the room?s speakers.  It seems to work fine?

Sorry I missed posting the reminder this weekend ...

.....  but there is indeed a meeting tonight.  7-9PM at  
MacOutfitters.  Primanti's afterward.

This will be a very special meeting focusing on how the new computer  
recycling center  ( CRC )  is being built for us by Hosanna  
Industries of Rochester, PA.

We will discuss the updated online FileMaker tool being rebuilt by  
Patrick Cranston that will track all progress at the CRC, the  
outreach missions with Hosanna and Goodwill store sales of our higher  
end equipment.

We'll look at the difference between the 10.3.9 machines and the  
9.2.2 machines we will be preparing.

I will show you some video and photos of the CRC.

REMINDER :  The Monroeville Public Library will be hosting the COWMUG  
meeting tomorrow night ... May 3, 7-9 PM.

Apple fans hoping that next months Worldwide Developers Conference  
would bring new iMacs will be disappointed to learn that their fate  
is still unknown.

Crazy Apple Rumors Site has learned that new iMacs may delayed  
because Apple is totally messing with this one guy from Bloomington.

According to sources, new iMacs will not be released until exactly  
two weeks and one day after 36-year-old Matt Wilson of Bloomington,  
Minn., buys a current model, whenever that should be.

CEO Steve Jobs, senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil  
Schiller and chief operating officer Tim Cook were beside themselves  
with laughter recounting their treatment of Wilson.

According to Jobs, Apple has been tormenting Wilson since he emailed  
steve at apple.com in April of 2001 to inquire when new iBooks would be  
shipping.

?I mean, like I?m going to tell this guy!? Jobs said. ?I?m Steve  
Jobs! As if!
?Then he buys a Titanium PowerBook exactly two weeks and one day  
before we release the new iBook and he?s totally irate!

?So we totally just had to mess with him after that. And we?ve been

Dear Mac Friends:

Dave Sevick and I will be doing a variety of small things at our new  
space at Goodwill's Computer Recycling Center on Friday, May 11.  
Thanks to everyone's help in the past month, our space is clean, and  
the floor is sealed.

? I will be getting there early to help the Goodwill staff palletize  
a shipment of approximately 200 iMacs they received from a suburban  
Pittsburgh school district earlier today, May 10. As we wrap them, I  
will be sorting the tray-load machines from the slot-load machines.

We haven't counted our pile of Mac to rehabilitate but a rough  
estimate is about 400-500. There are many wrapped pallets of Macs  
placed closely together, and it's difficult to determine exactly how  
many there are.

I can't help reflect on those days just three years ago when we  
didn't know where are next Mac would come from...

? When Dave arrives in the late morning, we will be running the line  
for our new Internet connection back to our work area.

? In between, I will attempt to begin rehabilitation of tray-load  
iMacs needed by the Imani school before the end of May.

If any of you are incredibly bored with our nice weather, you're more  
than welcome to join us as we slowly get our work space organized and  
running.

Dear Mac Friends:

Great news!

Dave WAS NOT electrocuted today. You had to be there...

1. We've run a working Internet connection to our work area.

2. The work benches designed and pre-fabricated at Hosanna Industries  
have been completed by adding monitor shelves (see below).

3. Mary Jo Smiley has become the mistress of the RAM tester. She's  
cranked out several dozen PC100/133 168-pin chips for our slot-load  
iMac rehabilitation.

4. We sorted a large shipment of iMacs and G3/G4 towers, and  
palletized them.

We await a visit from Hosanna Industries so they can guide us on the  
much-needed electrical service increase and addition of more  
lighting. It's their really busy housing-rehabilitation season, so it  
will probably be a while before they can work us in.

Next Friday, we will begin a LIMITED effort to rehabilitate tray-load  
iMacs for the Imani School in Homewood, and our first slot-load iMacs  
for the Goodwill Store on the South Side. We have just one plug to  
work from, so we probably can't be tuning up more that four machines  
at once.

Please make your friends and associates aware of the recycling effort  
done by Goodwill at this facility in Lawrenceville. It's quite a  
sight watching all those obsolete Windows PCs dissolve into large  
bins of component parts for responsible recycling. Anyone can drop  
off computers and monitors for recycling weekdays before 4:00 p.m.

I would like to upgrade from an old Apple CRT monitor to a 20- or 
23-inch Apple Cinema Display. However, the Apple specs say that the 
graphics card must be an NVIDIA graphics card or an ATI Radeon 7500 or 
better graphics card. I now have a Radeon 7000 Mac card with the latest 
updates. Does anyone know if I can use the existing card or must I 
upgrade? (Hardware constraints mean that the most I could do would be 
to go to a Radeon 9200 card.) Would it be better to try another flat 
screen monitor or would I have the same issues with the graphics card?

I hope everyone is enjoying their Mother's Day.

As Bob Donaldson has been showing you in his many photos, we now have  
the new Hosanna workbenches in place.

Our plan is to surround these benches with old office "pump" style  
chairs that people may have wanted to retire or donate or discard ....

We will be staffed by people of all different ages, heights and  
health conditions ...  such as back and knee problems that cause  
people not to be able to stand for long periods of time.

So, if you are able ... please consider donating that old chair to  
our recycling warehouse efforts.

The benches were designed to accommodate both a sitting and standing  
volunteer workforce.

Please drop  off your donated chairs at the CRC in Lawrenceville when  
you are able .... Mon - Fri  8AM-2:30PM.   The dock is fully staffed  
with Goodwill personnel without the need to call ahead during those  
hours.

If you cannot make it at those times ..... you can still come over  
between 2:30-4:30PM Mon-Fri .... but you will need to call ahead at  
412-696-0908  to make sure someone is there to meet you.  You will  
get a donation slip for your tax records.  Specify they are for the  
Apple section.   We will need as many pump-office chairs as we can  
get.   We are finalizing plans to have schools and churches and civic  
groups come in to volunteer on specific days  ... so we foresee all  
five work benches in use.

------  THERE ARE NO WEEKEND HOURS AT THE CRC AT THIS TIME ..... IT  
IS MON-FRI OPERATION ONLY -------

The CRC is located on 55  55th Street  , zip 15201,  in the  
Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh.

We will let you know when the electric and shelving is fully  
installed ... and we thank everyone who will be helping Bob Donaldson  
on this upcoming  Friday May 18  ...

We'll have a dual-purpose workday at the Goodwill Computer Recycling  
Center on Friday, May 18.

Charlie Hutchens will be finishing off some details on the work  
benches, and will be trying to deal with some bent metal legs on the  
framework of our future shelves.

I will begin working on slot-load and tray-load iMacs. We'll be  
limited by our electric power as we only have one outlet at our  
disposal.

We need to try to get as many iMac done as soon as possible to get  
machines into the Goodwill Computer Store and fill a long-standing  
request from the Imani School.

We'd be delighted for any company who can join us. I plan to be there  
around 9:00 a.m.

The Goodwill Computer Recycling Center is at 55 55th St. in  
Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood, a block off Butler St., the  
main street through Lawrenceville.

Dear Mac friends:

We had a wonderfully productive day at our new Mac refurbishment  
workroom at the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center in Pittsburgh's  
Lawrenceville neighborhood today.

Charlie Hutchens, Scott Baret and I got two lines up and running with  
long extension cords running from our single outlet.

Charlie spent the morning on his back installing the last of the work  
bench bracing, then scavenged thorough dozens of boxes and palates to  
bring needed parts to the work area.

We refurbished ten iMacs for the Imani School today, just in time for  
them to go home with students for the summer.

We plan to gather again next Friday, May 25.

I love this idea! I've got an old Mac 512K shell in my garage right  
now, stripped it for parts to fix up a Plus. I may actually build one  
in the next few weeks and I'll definitely share the  pictures if I go  
through with it!

You've -all- heard Dave talk about our recycling / refurbishment
program in cooperation with the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center.
I'm -not- sure how many of you listen to WYEP FM (91.3), but they have
been airing a public service announcement at LEAST once an hour today,
referring to Goodwill and the Reconnect Partnership (
http://reconnectpartnership.com/ ) which it appears is partly financed
by Dell.

Something tells me that there is going to be an absolute AVALANCHE of
Macs coming down on our little project pretty soon, with benefits to
the entire community and fun opportunities for anyone who cares to
participate. I think that Dave has tied us to the back of ... a ...
Tiger,.. or a ... Panther, or an, ...um. ...

Never mind.   ;)

Subject: [NPMUG] Success at the Recycling Center this week in May 2007

We are pleased to report this week of May 21-25, 2007:

1.  Temporary electric lines are installed to our Hosanna work benches.

2.  Internet connection ( 512 up/down ) established to one bench.

3.  Large 18" fans were installed at four large powered work benches.

4.  Hundreds of keyboards, mice, laptops and iMacs were sorted.

5.  Tool kits and cleaning supplies are now stocked in baskets at the  
end of all four benches.

6.  One bench has been converted into a long flat one level 16ft bench.

7. 18 iMac computers were prepared for Imani Christian School to  
partially fulfill a long standing order.

8. 11 User Group volunteers worked with us at the CRC this week.

I'm hoping that Lego Mindstorms improves steadily so we can use it in

We've enjoyed several years of Apple computer meetings ...

We've worked at Apple computer recycling and outreach  for several  
years ...

Now we have a new partnership with Hosanna Industries.  http://

Much like "Habitat for Humanity" , the local Hosanna team gathers  
volunteer groups to repair homes, schools, churches and much more.     
This has the same appeal as the "Peace Corps"  to me .... but it is  
right in our own back yards.

People all over Western PA are in need of this type of outreach.    
Hosanna organizes  churches, youth groups, schools and civic groups  
to sign on to do projects on specific dates .... and does a great job  
of organizing and leading visiting groups in the construction and/or  
repairs of structures in need of rehab.

They are going out of their way during this very busy season to  
tackle several jobs with their  paid staff of Hosanna contractors.

One such job is our CRC in Lawrenceville .... yeah !!!!!

We would like to invite you to join all of us Apple folks with your  
family, friends, and neighbors ..... in organizing an "Apple group"  
of volunteers to spend a weekend rebuilding someone's home .... must  
like and old fashioned Amish barn raising ....  This would be soon.   
It would be our first time.  I'm excited.

If you have an interest in something like this and get joy and  
satisfaction from giving your muscle and sweat to assist others ...  
please consider this opportunity.

We are talking about hammers, saws, drills, cement, gravel, drywall  
and more .....

D Preview: Apple, Microsoft, and Palm

The Wall Street Journal's increasingly influential technology  
conference is about to begin, and may bring multiple announcements  
from industry giants -- though Apple isn't talking.

The annual D: All Things Digital conference has become more and more  
pivotal for the technology industry since its inaugural event in  
2003. Typically centering around a series of interviews by columnists  
Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher, the event has typically served as a  
platform for more outspoken company heads that want to outline their  
grander visions or reveal previously unknown facets of their company  
culture.

Perhaps the most important of these to date, however, is set to take  
place Wednesday night. Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Microsoft chair Bill  
Gates will both be subjects of a joint interview by the journalists.  
It will represent the first time the two will take the stage together  
for an extended period and should free both executives to talk openly  
about themselves and each other: as in earlier years, the 2007 D  
conference will avoid scripts and other conversation filters.

Either firm will also have its own time to speak candidly about its  
own future in separate events. Jobs will appear onstage separately in  
advance of the interview to discuss Apple's strategies, while  
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will take a similar approach for his  
company.

More immediately relevant to those not present at the sold-out  
gathering, however, will be a likely flurry of product announcements  
that have been a staple of more recent conferences.  (((( clipped ))))

First ....  thanks for all your time,  folks .... you have been great !

Here are some updated rules and info as we prepare for large  
volunteer groups from schools and churches to join our mission......


Regarding the Lawrenceville site :

1.   You may park briefly on the inside dock to drop off donations or  
supplies ... then you must park outside in the lot.

2.   You must park outside and enter via the security guard ....   
sign-in .... and .... sign out.

3.   You will be required to wear our new "gray recycling T-Shirt  
with green logo"   .... it is gray with a green apple silk screened  
on the front ... and more writing on the back.

4.   You will be required to schedule your time on the web at our new  
site ( not public yet ) so there will be a record of incoming  
volunteers, attendance  and work done.

5.   Remind people with large donations that a Goodwill truck will  
come to pickup the items.  The cost is $65 in the Pittsburgh city  
limits, $100 everywhere else ... this is a very good price.

Regarding the 24 Goodwill Retail stores and MacOutfitters :

1.  You will soon see Goodwill ads on TV,  hear them on radio,  and  
read in the papers highlighting that Goodwill has a great network of

records.  Please remind everyone to utilize those 25 convenient  
locations ....  here is a quick list .... and a  PDF with contact  
info attached at the end of this email   ....   PLEASE GET THE WORD  
OUT !!!!!!!

I'm presenting an online workshop over the weekend at the Hyatt in  
Rochester, NY.  I visited their website today and noticed that in the  
meeting rooms they use High Speed Internet - wired.  (The guest rooms  
are wireless.  I thought the entire hotel was wireless)

I have never used anything but wireless with my laptop.  Could  
someone give me instructions on how to set my laptop to use my  
modem?  I have a 12" powerbook G4.

Also, if you have any suggestions on cables I should have available  
just in case....

Dear Mac Friends:

It will be another iMac blitz day at the Goodwill Recycling Center in  
Lawrenceville on Friday. Dave has pulled out a couple of palates from  
the storage area and seeded them on our work benches.

Dave and I don't plan on being there before 9:30. I will be making a  
Mac pickup at Marshall Middle School early in the morning, and Dave  
will be picking up Charles Firth so they can set up an Xserve Net  
Boot server to help image our FireWire iMacs.

All are welcome, and we have a few non-technical tasks available if  
you don't want to dig inside an iMac.

The Goodwill Computer Recycling Center is at 55 55th St. in  
Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood. It's a block off of Butler  
St., headed towards the Allegheny River. Please remember to sign in  
on the log on the receptionist's desk when you come.

If you have any drop-offs, you can drive directly to the loading  
dock, but please pull out to the lot to park after you've unloaded.
