I don't know what good that old books can do when their content is so dated, but I hate throwing any book away. Are there any libraries or organizations that anyone easily knows off the top of their heads, that might be interested in my collection? Most of the time it works out in our favor - Office 98 had features that Office 97 was missing, and the trend continues to this day. Look at Office 2004 vs. Office 2003 - the Mac version has some really nice stuff that the Windows version lacks (The way Powerpoint treats dual monitors, Word's collation features, etc) Now we're at Office 2007 on the PC, which finally has some of these features, but was shipped before the current "new stuff" (most notably the ribbon GUI) could be fully incorporated. Word 2007, Excel 2007, and Powerpoint 2007 all have the ribbon, but Access and Outlook do not - the official word is they "simply ran out of time". However, on the Mac side the Intel switch (and underlying death of Carbon) forced the MS MBU (Mac Business Unit) to overhaul Office for the Mac - pushing it back to 2008. But this gives them time to make the ribbon GUI clean throughout the suite, and finalize some of the other new features that Office 2007 for Windows didn't get quite right before they had to ship. It's actually a good deal - Microsoft gets a test-lab of users who are almost gleeful when the software fails, and we get some nice features and ideas that the Windows side doesn't see until the next major rev. Our "bare basics" guide to new media (or eMedia, if you prefer), which will happen in Pittsburgh on Saturday, April 21, is coming together on the logistics end. Now we need speakers. The BootCamp audience won't be as tech-savvy or podcast-familiar as the PodCamp audience. Sessions will be tailored toward entry-level information and hands-on examples: clear, concise and useful information. As such, we'll be arranging the sessions beforehand to ensure that core sessions aren't scheduled at the same time, and ARE being presented by speakers whom we trust to deliver to an uninitiated audience. In addition to sessions, we'll also have workshops / one-on-one "advisor" areas, where folks who prefer individual attention can ask questions in a more private environment. Are you interested in being a speaker / advisor? If so, please contact me. Let me know: - your area(s) of expertise: blog, audio, video, animation, photo, social networking, business, coding, design, etc. - your focus(es) of choice: art / content, process / technology, business / marketing - the manner(s) in which you'd be comfortable speaking: solo, panel, tag-team, hands-on demo, one-on-one Please note, speakers are unpaid. (This is still a PodCamp offshoot, after all.) If you have questions or comments, please email me. Podcast Alley Question A "Friend of PodCamp" is attempting to get in touch with the folks at Podcast Alley. Does anyone on this list have a contact there? If so, please contact me and I can connect the two of you. The users group gives out the first Apple computers at the Pleasant Valley Mens Shelter on the North Side of Pittsburgh. Recycling work is done out of user group members' homes and garages. About 12 computers are fixed and handed out to the men. 2003 NPMUG (North Pittsburgh Macintosh Users Group) sees the volume of computers to be fixed increasing and moves the operations to the Christian Lighthouse Foundation in Butler, PA. Over the course of a year 71 computers get repaired and distributed to the local food bank population that comes in each week. 2004 NPMUG (North Pittsburgh Macintosh Users Group) outgrows the small space available at the Lighthouse and move operations to The Center For Hope in Ambridge, PA. It is here that user group volunteers occupy one classroom. After the first year they move to two rooms. In 2006 they conquer a project to improve the CAT5e infrastructure and power needs at the center .... and eventually occupy four large classrooms at this community service center. The NPMUG also partners with the YMCA of Pittsburgh as a PC Windows recycling partner. By March 2007 they cross the 600 computer mark and find themselves bursting at the seams with donations stacked high in every corner. We are able to ship several computers to the Gulf hurricane victims in a relief effort to Louisiana and Mississippi in addition to serving the local communities in the Beaver Valley along the Ohio River. 2006 The Goodwill CRC (Computer Recycling Center) moves recycling operations to a large warehouse in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville section on 55th Street. 2007 The Goodwill CRC (Computer Recycling Center) has a Grand Re- Opening of their retail store on the corner of 26th and Carson called the "Computer Works of the South Side". March 2007 Goodwill Pittsburgh partners with all the Pittsburgh Apple Users Groups for a joint effort to be the premier computer recycling center in Pittsburgh with a focus on environmental waste control of de-manufactured computer parts, data destruction with the Kil-A-Byte program to prevent identity theft, and community outreach with the low cost retail store of refurbished computers and software. An additional partnership with Hosanna Industries of Rochester, PA is formed for construction assistance and computer distribution of the lower-end computers to the community .... that is computers fixed, yet not sellable at the "Computer Works of the South Side" due to old age and system software limitations. I'm on the mailing list now, and Dave said I should introduce myself... so here goes... My name is Sean McCune and I live in Natrona Heights. I'm an independent software developer. My company is Red Hand Software. I do software product design and development on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris, any kind of unix, and embedded systems with or without an operating system. I, of course, prefer the One True Operating System, Mac OS X, but sometimes customers refuse to see the light. I partner with a group of developers, so we have a sizable team that can take on larger jobs. So if you need a developer, let me know. OK, enough with the plugs for my biz... I used a Mac in college in the 80's, but not again until 2002 when a friend and co-worker showed me OS X on his laptop. It was Linux with a *good* user interface. So I bought one of the lamp-stand iMacs and I dinked around with it at home, but I couldn't really use as part of my work, except for reading email and using the web. But it grew on me. I broke down and bought a Powerbook in 2005 because I just preferred using OS X whenever I could. I actually lugged around two laptops for awhile. One with Linux and Windows on it, and the Powerbook. Then nirvana came when the Intels came out, and now I just carry around the MacBook Pro and have a 24" iMac at home where I can develop for Windows, OS X, Linux, and Solaris all from the same machine. I could go on... but this is probably enough. Let me just finish by saying I currently enjoy driving the other developers I work with crazy when they complain about something on Windows or Linux and I say, "but I can do that on my Mac"... It was great meeting yinz all last week, and I'll see you at the next one. Feel free to email or IM me anytime. Sean McCune sean at redhandsoftware.com Red Hand Software, Inc. Since this is such short notice for the good people at the Goodwill trucking division ( and they have been great ) .... the best they can do is to have a truck to our Ambridge site ready to load palettes at 11AM .... not the earlier planned 2PM ..... yikes !!! So this means we really have to hustle between 6AM and 11AM to pack all of our items with plastic wrapped palettes by 11AM ..... We will line up all these crates in the street in front of The Center for Hope ... and we'll use palette jacks for movement onto the truck. These items will then be transported to the Goodwill warehouse in Lawrenceville. Somehow, this is all going to come together. To those who cannot make it to help out .... your prayers and well wishes are helpful :-) Dave P.S. The link takes you to the whole article on unsanity. CuZinBruce Notes and Tips (Macintouch 3/17) http://www.unsanity.org/archives/mac_os_x/shock_and_awe.php The folks at Unsanity may finally have unravelled the mystery of randomly-disastrous Apple software updates: Shock and Awe: How Installing Apple's Updates can Render Your Mac Unbootable and How You Can Prevent it ... When you see the "Optimizing System Performance" phase of a software update, Mac OS X is really updating prebinding. Updating prebinding has a very, very nasty bug in it (look at _dyld_update_prebinding). If multiple processes are updating prebinding at the same time, then it is possible for a system file to be completely zero'd out. Basically, all data in the file is deleted and it is replaced with nothing. This bug is usually triggered when updating Mac OS X and every update to Mac OS X has the potential to render your system unbootable depending on if the "right" file is deleted or not. It's triggered during the "Optimizing System Performance" phase of installing an update. This phase is actually just running update_prebinding. If you launch an application that links to libraries that are not yet prebound, there is a chance one of those files will be zero'd out as dyld automatically redoes the prebinding on that file. I've been tracking this particular bug for about 18 months now. Most of the real "random" failures reported on various Mac OS X "troubleshooting" sites after a user has installed an Apple software update are actually manifestations of this bug. By real I mean not imagined problems or ones that have been there for a very long time but the user is just now noticing it and artificially connecting the cause to the recent update (it's called Pareidolia). Yes, this nasty prebinding bug has been reported to Apple and yes, it is 100% reproducible if you want to reproduce it. Every single time you install an update to Mac OS X whether it be an iTunes update, a QuickTime update, an update for daylight saving time, a security update, an Airport update, or an actual Mac OS X update, you can be hit by this bug. In order to prevent yourself from being smacked in the face by this bug, follow this simple rule: When "Optimize System Performance" appears during the update process do not touch your computer and definitely do not launch any applications. Just back away from your computer box as if it were a swarm of bees. Yes, it does mean that if you install the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update, you may get hit by the bug. It can't receive or record cable or satellite TV, so it isn't meant as a replacement for your cable or satellite box, or for a digital video recorder like a TiVo. It can't play DVDs, so it doesn't replace your DVD player. Its sole function is to bring to the TV digital content stored on your computer or drawn from the Internet. Like a DVD player, it uses its own separate input on your TV set, and you have to change inputs using your TV remote to use it. http://ptech.wsj.com/solution.html -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Better yet, you can actually see the launch thanks to a webcast set for 3:30 PM ET, 12:30 PM PT. The Adobe Creative Suite 2 includes Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign Adobe GoLive, Adobe Acrobat Professional, Version Cue, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Stock Photos and Dreamweaver 8 so we can expect to see updated versions of at least some of those products, but will there be others? We may have a hint. Adobe will be one of the featured presenters at the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro Users Group to show off the new edition of Adobe Production Studio which includes Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premier, Adobe Audition, Adobe Encore, Adobe Dynamic Link in addition to some of the Creative Suite tools. All in all, it should be an interesting event to watch and share with your members. You can log in to the webcast on the dedicated event page on Adobe's web site on Tuesday. http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/launchevent -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... So the monthly work days in Ambridge will become work days at Goodwill in the near future. But that has to be decided once we have our shelves, workbenches, electric and internet installed in our 2000 square foot space. We are in that transition stage right now .... so I will report on that soon. The staffing for the Shadyside meetings is thin right now with all of our busy schedules .... so we have collectively decided to not just stop meetings at the Shadyside Apple Store on the 2nd Sunday of each month ..... but rather just take a hiatus and hope we can have some more help at that site .. so if you have had a hankering to host a meeting ... please let me know. But for now .... we are going to take April and May off at Shadyside and catch our breath. "Pittsburgh Apple User Groups" discount cards are expiring soon for many of you. To help our many outreach efforts and to support the websites and to help provide light refreshments at the meetings .... I would like to encourage people to renew their $25 and I will send you a new plastic card with a fresh expiration. I have gotten positive feedback that people have reaped way more than $25 back in discounts off Apple purchases at MacOutfitters, Shadyside and South Hills Village. So the value is measurable. Please email me back offline to let me know you would like to renew your card. OK ... that's all .... much more soon ..... :-) See you all again this upcoming Wednesday April 4 at MacOutfitters in Cranberry .... the topic will be Apple TV ..... ..... and then Thursday April 5 at the Monroeville Public Library.
