Thanks to all who showed up. Thanks to the day-long efforts of Charles Firth, we now are able to rapidly image our tray-load and slot-load iMacs. The time to prepare a tray-load iMac has gone from 35-45 minutes to 10 minutes. A slot- load iMac prepared with OS X now happens in about the same time. Today, we prepared 14 OS 9 iMacs, and were able to get 4 OS X iMacs done before closing. Now that we have a Net Boot server available and configured by Charles Firth, we should be able to get many done quickly in the future. We also learned many little things we need to change at our next work session: ? Our friend, the RAM tester doesn't always tell the truth. We discovered several RAM chips the tester passed as not workable in FireWire iMacs with OS X. ? We need to pre-flight the iMacs better. We discovered hardware issues in some machines while imaging them that keep them from be "saleable" at the Goodwill Store, such as a bad sound card, etc. Dave is developing a check list for the iMacs to pass before we hook it up to the server for imaging. ? We seem to have an iMac keyboard crisis, with available colors not matching the machines that have been prepared. Today, 7 of the 14 OS 9 iMacs are Tangerine, but we have no Tangerine keyboards or mice left. We also found a 72-pin RAM tester in the accumulated items in the holding cage. We can now pull all those 72-pin RAM chips Goodwill is tossing and see if they can work for our older machines. And in what may be the best news of all, Flaccus Stiffel brought in a small refrigerator so those of you wanting to bag your lunch, or keep a drink cold now have an island of respite. We still searching the holding cage for Apple laptop power supplies. It's starting look pretty grim on this front. We hope there's a box somewhere back there filled with them, but it doesn't look promising. Dave plans on being there again on Thursday, June 7, and both of us on Friday, June 8. We'll post a note to the list next week. Robert A. Message-ID: <1CB5D105-3747-4CC0-A73C-0516EF9094F7@davesevick.com> I want to join with Bob Donaldson's many praises for Charles Firth's work on the XServe G5's Net Boot configuration today .... a major step forward ... and a great draw for the PC techs who migrated over to our space to see what all the fuss was about. The single CD OS9 ASR ( Apple Software Restore ) solution is huge for us .... Please also recognize the efforts of Scott Baret and Flacc Stifel on stripping down iMacs and adding RAM. Rick "Fitz" Fitzgibbon spent the entire day with his head buried inside iMac cases pulling apart hard drives, batteries and CDROMs. Steven Mast continues the major quest of sorting all our software ... Marty Swartz scoped out all the laptops ... new and old. It was a great 8-man effort today ..... Thanks everyone. And remember that Dennis Abbott , April Keith, Gene Keebler and the entire CRC Goodwill staff have been great hosts for us every day. Dave P.S. Getting this much help each week on a Thursday and/or Friday from volunteers is something we really appreciate ... and did not count on ..... -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... At Hosanna Industries, our New Construction Program perfected a technique called a Blitz Build. This is a non-traditional, labor intensive building process that condenses the building of a modest home to three to five days. How do we do it? We accomplish this with staff trained not only in construction skills but also in leadership skills to guide volunteers during the course of the build. Hosanna Industries Hosanna Industries works with volunteers of any age or ability.eliminates the misconception that a volunteer has to know something about construction to help build our homes. All that we require are servant-minded individuals who are willing to try and work hard at whatever task we ask of them. That?s all. By the end of the build, an immense sense of accomplishment is felt by all. Hosanna Industries builds these homes for around $26 per square foot. We utilize volunteer labor, employ mission-minded staff who work for well below market wages and use donated or reduced priced materials given to us by generous local businesses. This generosity has incredible effects for our clients. Due to the free labor and donated materials, the mortgage that they obtain is much lower than that of most other homeowners. But if you were to see a finished home, you would not see anything to be scoffed at. It has new appliances, ceramic tile floors and curtains to match every room. The goals of a Blitz Build are more than just building a home for someone who needs it. We try to build community for everyone involved. The volunteers grow closer to each other through this experience. Knowing they are helping someone in need makes all of the long, hard hours worth it. The members of the wider community become involved by helping build the house as well as establishing a relationship with the new homeowner. Local businesses have the opportunity to become involved through donations and helping with the build. They often will acquire more customers through this generous participation. And the new homeowner becomes more acclimated to the mainstream of economic and social life within the surrounding community. Everyone benefits in this situation! Blitz Build Schedule The following is a typical Blitz Build schedule that allows us to accomplish our three to five day goal with 50-80 volunteers. I use iPhoto and it arranges the pictures per date if I look in the Photo Library or burn them to a disc. This makes it very difficult to find anything later. Is there a setting that I am not finding, a different way of doing it, or a free or shareware program that works better for this. I had to back up my photo library before and I have no idea where anything is anymore. I have these discs that are marked with dates instead of the Album they were in. thanks for the help. The iPhones are coming! With one week to go before Apple's iPhones are available in stores you can read about them on-line, see them in TV commercials, and watch the promotional video (thanks, Dave!). But will they sell? Some complain that they are too expensive, or that they lock you in to one carrier, or that the market is already saturated. Others drool over the cool factor, point out that you get internet with it, and say it's not that much more than an 80G iPod (and you know how iPods have changed the world). Just for fun, let's predict how many iPhones will be sold on the first day, and during the first month. Make your best guess, and we'll see how close you come to the actual units sold (if Apple releases the sales figures). Send your guess for first day sales, sales through the end of July, and (if you want) your reasons why you think it will be a hit or a miss. I'll tally the responses and post the results to the listserv next Friday. Send your guess for number of iPhone units sold to pcarras+iphone at pitt.edu To make it simple, cut 'n' paste the following line and type in your entry just below it. July 31, Aug 1-2-3 .... need to have all people signed up this week Friday, June 29 Message-ID: If you would like to join us on July 31, Aug 1-2-3 .... please let me know by Friday of this week. We have 12 people committed and need as close to 30 as possible. To refresh you what we'll be doing ....... http://www.hosannaindustries.org/blitz.htm New Construction (Blitz Builds) What is a Blitz Build? The evening before the first day begins with a thorough orientation to Hosanna Industries' Blitz Building techniques. Day One * 7:00 AM: Link hands to pray around the foundation * Noon: Walls are nailed into place; trusses are complete; siding is progressing; roof is underway; plumbing and electrical rough-ins are in progress * Dinner: Siding is complete; the roof is finished; doors and windows are installed; gutters, fascia and soffit are installed; electrical inspection passes Day Two * 7:00 AM: Gather around the home to pray * Noon: Insulation is installed; drywall is underway * Dinner: Drywall is complete; mudding is progressing with our unique accelerated process; landscaping is started * Evening: Painting is complete Day Three * 7:00 AM: Gather together to pray * Noon: Trim is installed; interior doors are hung; flooring is partially installed * Dinner: Flooring is complete; kitchen cabinets are installed; electrical and plumbing trim-out is complete Day Four * 7:00 AM: Gather to pray; install appliances; complete all touch-up; finish landscaping * Noon: All of the family?s furniture is moved in; pictures hung; curtains hung * 2:00 PM: Dedication of home; Bible, bread and the keys to the home are presented as gifts to the household A Blitz Build teaches many things: patience, faith, humility, endurance, the power of love and focus. CMU robotics folks tell me that the RCX is the right choice for her - she's only eight. Unfortunately, the Mac-compatible CD-ROM that came with the kit was lost by the previous owner. I've done enough research to know that there was a Mindstorms RIS (Robotics Invention System) version 1.5 release that worked with the Mac in pre-OSX days. It would work with their RCX v1.0 or v1.5 bricks. I've contacted LEGO, hoping to buy a CD, and their answer is "Go buy an RCX kit for $250. Have a nice day." Do any of you kind folks have a RIS v1.0 or v1.5 CD sitting on a shelf unused, that we could borrow or copy? Any help would be greatly appreciated. We've really hit our stride in the past week since our electric service has been installed. On Wednesday, we delivered two eMacs and 14 DV iMacs to the Goodwill Computer Store on the South Side. Today, we provided five tray-load iMacs to Family Resources. Off the benches today were seven more DV iMacs with our software package destined for the Goodwill Computer Store, and 14 more were prepared for later OSX net booting. We're seen our productivity soar since our new work benches fabricated at Hosanna Industries have been installed, and electric added in the past week. Every day we work at Goodwill, we are asked by the Goodwill workers how they can purchase the Macs we are rehabilitating. This week, they even made signs, "The Apple Orchard," for our work benches. People are watching us, and evidently like what they see. Our efforts have never been better or more productive, and there's even better times ahead. It is really moving to think of where we started, and where we're headed. It is indeed a pleasant memory of the that day about six years ago when we were having a conversation before an NPMUG user group meeting about a bunch of Macs thrown into a dumpster by a school district. We were mad as hell, and we weren't doing to let that happen again. Now, we've surpassed 700 refurbished Macs and will soon close in on 800 in the next month at our current rate. Our new partner, Goodwill Industries, has provided us a fabulous home and a steady supply of Macs to refurbish. We have great partners, and many friends who wish us well. It's up to us to keep the effort moving forward. We plan to be at the Goodwill Computer Recycling Center in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood again next Friday, July 6. We'd be honored if you can join us to refurbish part of our Macintosh inventory. FYI, the Goodwill Computer Store at East Carson St. at South 26th St. will be open for a sale on Wednesday, July 4. If you know anyone look for a bargain on an expertly, lovingly restored DV iMac, let them know. We prepare our DV iMacs for Goodwill with 384 mb RAM and OS X.3.9. Personally, I'd like to thank all of you for your fellowship and the oppportunity of doing this. It is an insanely wonderful experience for me and gives me more satisfaction that you can possibly imagine. Robert A. Limbo Friday, June 29th, 11:00am As the buzz built on Friday, Dave Sevick and I decided to get to the mall early and get in line - the idea of not having an iPhone to show off come Saturday was unbearable. So I loaded up my MacBook with some great TV shows, grabbed a book, and hit South Hills Village to wait the six hours for a phone. 12:00pm - At the mall, we find ourselves numbers 21 and 22 in the line - woo! Odds are really good we'll get phones. Everyone in line is very friendly, and we settle in for the long haul. Mall Security, however, is really difficult - it's "not permitted" to sit down. At all. Not even the poor guy who brought a chair is allowed to sit. It looks like we'll have to stand the whole time. Yuck. There is some discussion about how to use our laptops while standing. While I hold the spot, Dave goes hunting for a large stool or something to use as a podium. He returns with a large box (containing an upright fan) that works great as a podium! Mall Security isn't thrilled, but can't really argue our carrying/holding a valid purchase. We proceed to wait in line watching TV shows, iPhone videos, and chatting with people. Apple store people come out and give us water, coffee, and chat. All in all, not too bad. Finally the time approaches - Here we go! Heaven 6:00pm hits and the doors open - cheering, clapping, and party time! They're only letting 20 people in at a time, and (being numbers 21 and 22) we end up at the front of the line waiting for "batch 2" to get in. Inside the store, things look like they're going quick. Store employees are on hand doing demos, answering questions, and running around grabbing accessories for people queued up to get the phone. Within 2 minutes Dave and I (and our group of Apple-fans) are in the door - straight into the "buying an iPhone" line - some quick conversation, and an Apple employee is scanning my phone's UPC code, swiping my credit card, and says "we'll email you the receipt. you're going to love it!" 6:10pm - I'm out the store (wow.. that was fast - they are totally on top of this!) and people are congratulating me. Small children are asking to see the phone (hell no!) and it feels like I've won the lottery. I'm so excited! The box is classic Apple - small, compact, and sleek. Quick! Get home and unbox this thing! 6:40pm - My Mac is up and running, the latest iTunes (7.3) is installed and ready to go. Let's unbox this phone. My god - it's Beautiful! I mean, stunning to hold. A marvel. A lot lighter then expected - it's lighter then my iPod, lighter then my phone.. it's stunning. In the box is the phone, a small manual (who needs that?), the Dock, a USB-to-Dock cable, and an AC power brick charger. And the earpieces with mic. All pretty. Turn this thing on.. Apple logo appears on the screen (woo hoo!) and soon.. a crystal clear screen showing the globe and saying "Activate iPhone: connect to iTunes" Into the dock it goes... iTunes sees it right way. Wee! Apple is so smart for having Activation done this way. Chose "existing AT&T customer" and start the setup process. Give my existing number, some other details, and choose 'Add iPhone unlimited data to my existing plan ($20). Hit Submit Get to Completing Activation. So far so good! Hell Suddenly it says "Your activation requires additional time to complete" - what's going on? Huh? Called the number on the screen and sat on hold (hey, opening night.. bound to be a bit of a crush) Tried to get my activation resolved through AT&T - multiple phone calls and numbers, getting bounced around. No one is able to explain why my activation is being delayed. Is it my plan? Did I typo something? Is it just slow? No one knows. Last AT&T rep said existing AT&T accounts are getting crushed and are slow - may have to wait up to 12 hours for activation! I hang up a little annoyed but understanding about it. Unfortunately, you can't do anything with the iPhone until it's activated - so i can't even sync with it, or use any of the iPod features, or even play with the touch screen. It's an iBrick until activated. Meanwhile, My friend Jeff K got his iPhone activated in 3 minutes despite being a Verizon customer! He calls me from the iPhone and we play with it - calling me with the speaker phone, the earpieces (Jeff informs me "Wow.. you're in stereo!") and other fun. Gosh it sounds great... he's loving it. Dave reports another non-AT&T customer got up and running in 30 seconds. (one of the phones he was setting up) - he also reports a wonderful experience. It appears existing AT&T customers are the ones getting hurt. Viewing the Apple support discussion boards appears to agree with this assessment - a lot of existing AT&T customers are being told they will take longer to activate. I guess I'm in this crowd... i thought we'd be easier to activate then a new customer (since AT&T already has all my info, no credit check is required, etc). Oh well. I guess I wait. 9:10pm - email from AT&T saying my current plan is not valid for an iPhone and I need to call them to choose a new plan. I called them - sat on hold, went through 2 different people before one rep tells me the issue is I have a "blue" plan and need an "orange" plan. Sat on hold for a good long while as the AT&T rep tried to move my phone account over to a new plan. Suddenly I'm transfered to a new person with no clue, where did the other guy go?.. I give her my info. (all over again) and am put back on hold. 30 more minutes.. they're confused.. my phone now has no plan at all. (huh?) They want me to call back at the original number and start over. I refuse and get a manager. She says my phone is now on a different plan then the one I used to have (it's on a $39.99 individual plan rather then my original FamilyTalk plan with Callahan). So it appears the first guy moved me from one incompatible "blue" plan to another incompatible "blue" plan, then transfered me to the iPhone activation crew. They can't change rate plans, all they can do is activate Phones. So it's back to the first batch of AT&T people to start over and try and get an "orange" plan. This transfer is at 10:20pm. An hour on the phone to go back to square one. 11:00pm - Still on the phone - this is a complete mess. They can't move my phone to a new plan and still keep Cal on her existing plan if i get an iPhone - they must convert to a new "orange" plan for both of us, which would cost more for less minutes and make her phone useless (she'd literally need to get a new phone). Her existing phone (it's only 2 years old) won't work with the new plan - the SIM card is incompatible. Removing my phone from her plan kills the "Family Talk" plan and would also require her to upgrade to a new plan and phone. So basically, me getting an iPhone will nuke our existing AT&T plan and force us to upgrade to a worse plan for more money. This is not acceptable. I decide I'd rather just create a new AT&T plan from scratch and get a new phone number - it will be a hassle for me (and all my clients) to have to change my business number... So now I'm seeing if we can change the iPhone back to a refresh start so I can pretend to be a new customer. I have a plan to hold off on Activation until i can return to the mall tomorrow and see if the AT&T reps can work out this whole rate plan mess, or if I really do need to create a new phone number. So let's just get this iPhone back to the "newly out of the box" setting. The AT&T rep tried several things- as did I, and the iPhone will not revert back. Once you hit "Submit" you're done - that phone is in the queue for activation and you can't reset it. Finally the AT&T guy said he is going to try and "push" the reset to my iPhone - I read him the IMEI and ICCID numbers from the phone (hitting the little "i" button on the "Activate iPhone" screen) 11:43pm - still no hold. No idea what he's doing.... 12:11am - Ok.. AT&T rep says he can't reset the phone, but he and another manager have managed to move my iPhone over to an new plan without touching the existing plan for Callahan, leaving me with a new plan for the iPhone and her on our existing "blue" plan without it being destroyed. But it'll take "up to 24 hours" to activate. We'll see what happens in the morning. I go to bed and sleep poorly - somewhere in all this I realize I haven't eaten since some Mall-food chinese at lunch. 6:00am - Get up and check the phone, still awaiting activation. And now my old phone is dead. So they've deactivated my old SIM card, but still haven't activated my new iPhone. I now have no phone at all. I'm dead in the water. And the iTunes screen stating "Your activation requires additional time to complete" no longer shows a phone number to call.. glad I wrote that down! I log into my AT&T account online and confirm that, yes, Callahan still has her existing plan and the account shows the new iPhone plan is listed for my phone number. Looks like the last AT&T rep last night actually did what he said he did.. so that's something. AT&T is officially charging me for iPhone service. 7:54am - Still dead. It's been over 12 hours since I started this Activation process. I can't believe they'd nuke my old phone and let me sit here with no phone. Jeff K emails me - he's got his iPhone working great, connecting to his Microsoft Exchange server! He's in heaven! The iPhone is awesome! I describe my beautiful brick. "Every once in a while", I explain with glee, "I turn it off and back on again! It's awesome!" 10:20am - I finish writing this "story so far" up and prepare to post it. My hope is the Epic Tale will continue in "Part 2: The iPhone actually gets activated" but honestly I just don't know if that'll ever happen. Stay tuned for more exciting adventures.. as I once again decide it would be fun to turn off my iBrick and turn it on again. Man I love my "Activate iPhone" wallpaper. Lots of cool features on the iPhone, but the real email is what impresses me most. My daughter (4 yrs old) loves the iPod part of the iphone. It took her about 3 minutes to figure out how to use it (She can't even read yet). The best part of the iPhone for her is the built in speaker. My other ipods she had to wear headphones to listen which there are not good headphones for a 4 yr old. The speaker on the iPhone is very good for how small it is. And I got my iPhone. I couldn't transfer my existing phone number to it because its a business account, even though I want to close that account and transfer the number to my iPhone. So I activated a new account on the iPhone, and like Patrick's experience, that was flawless and took less than a minute. Then I struggled with email. Business account or not, I intend on using the iPhone for business voice calls and email. I use Google Apps for corporate email and I couldn't get the GMail account configuration on the iPhone to work with it. It insisted on a username that ended in gmail.com while mine ends in redhandsoftware.com So I decided to get smart and create a Yahoo account since Yahoo email is pushed to the phone anyway. Then I would forward a copy of all my redhandsoftware email to the Yahoo account. Well, the problem there is that when you send email from the iPhone using that Yahoo account, Yahoo appends an ad at the bottom of the email. Not very corporate or professional looking. Finally, I stumbled on to the fact that if I configured up an "Other" mail account but used my corporate GMail config info that it would work just fine. And it does. Safari works great... including, thankfully, Google's RSS reader with its mobile layout. The iPod stuff, of course, works great. I do have a wish list and a few gripes, though: 1. Some kind of screen protection. I don't want to put it in a case, but I'd like something to protect that beautiful screen. 2. Because the headphone jack is recessed, my cassette adapter for listening to the iPod in my car won't plug into it. So now I have to buy another one that will, if one exists yet... which it probably doesn't. Or else I still have to carry around my nano for car use. 3. Yes, the EDGE data network is slow for most uses. I have a Verizon EVDO card for my Macbook Pro and I'm used to getting 1.4 Mbps on it. So the barely better than dial-up EDGE network doesn't cut it for real web use beyond reading RSS feeds in Google Reader. And I know that being an early adopter with the iPhone is going to kill me here because when the iPhone finally does get good 3G or 4G network capability it will mean I have to go shell out big bucks for the new model. 4. Lack of Flash and java hampers net use if some of the web sites you visit frequently happen to use/require them. This could be fixed in the future with a firmware upgrade. 5. 8 Gb is fine for my music and podcasts. Forget about movies. With my music and podcasts (and a few video podcasts) on the iPhone, I have less than 2 Gb of space left. I don't have any photos on the thing yet either. So I *might* be able to store a TV show... one... on the thing... but definitely not a move. 6. As a software developer, I really want to be able to write software for the thing. Can't yet. As a consultant, I really want to port my time-tracking app to the thing. Can't yet. I guess I'll have to go the Web 2.0 app route for that stuff unless and until His Jobs-ness relents on the 3rd-party apps. But EDGE slowness makes the web app route painful when there's no WiFi available. 7. That phone number transfer thing. This one might have a happy ending. I called AT&T and they said they could transfer my old phone number over manually. I just need a new SIM card. They noted in my account what should be done and told me to go to the AT&T store and they could install it. So this could end up being relatively easy and pain-free. On the other hand, it might end up sending me down the same scary, frustrating rabbit hole that Charles was sent down. But other than these issues, some of which are minor, this is a great device. It is beautiful and has worked flawlessly. It will take some time for my fat fingers to get good at the keyboard. Its not the lack of tactile feedback, but the size of the keys that's an issue. But I'm already doing better than I did last night. The keyclick sounds go a long way to making up for the lack of tactile feedback. The display is incredible. And the UI is unbelievably snappy and responsive. Every single cellphone and PDA I've ever had has been sluggish and I've just come to expect it. But this is incredible. The scrolling response to the finger-flicking motion is so crisp that its almost like working with a physical thing rather than a touch-screen display. That's it.
