At Hosanna Industries, our New Construction Program perfected a technique called a Blitz Build. This is a non-traditional, labor intensive building process that condenses the building of a modest home to three to five days. How do we do it? We accomplish this with staff trained not only in construction skills but also in leadership skills to guide volunteers during the course of the build. Hosanna Industries Hosanna Industries works with volunteers of any age or ability.eliminates the misconception that a volunteer has to know something about construction to help build our homes. All that we require are servant-minded individuals who are willing to try and work hard at whatever task we ask of them. That?s all. By the end of the build, an immense sense of accomplishment is felt by all. Hosanna Industries builds these homes for around $26 per square foot. We utilize volunteer labor, employ mission-minded staff who work for well below market wages and use donated or reduced priced materials given to us by generous local businesses. This generosity has incredible effects for our clients. Due to the free labor and donated materials, the mortgage that they obtain is much lower than that of most other homeowners. But if you were to see a finished home, you would not see anything to be scoffed at. It has new appliances, ceramic tile floors and curtains to match every room. The goals of a Blitz Build are more than just building a home for someone who needs it. We try to build community for everyone involved. The volunteers grow closer to each other through this experience. Knowing they are helping someone in need makes all of the long, hard hours worth it. The members of the wider community become involved by helping build the house as well as establishing a relationship with the new homeowner. Local businesses have the opportunity to become involved through donations and helping with the build. They often will acquire more customers through this generous participation. And the new homeowner becomes more acclimated to the mainstream of economic and social life within the surrounding community. Everyone benefits in this situation! Blitz Build Schedule The following is a typical Blitz Build schedule that allows us to accomplish our three to five day goal with 50-80 volunteers. The evening before the first day begins with a thorough orientation to Hosanna Industries' Blitz Building techniques. Day One * 7:00 AM: Link hands to pray around the foundation * Noon: Walls are nailed into place; trusses are complete; siding is progressing; roof is underway; plumbing and electrical rough-ins are in progress * Dinner: Siding is complete; the roof is finished; doors and windows are installed; gutters, fascia and soffit are installed; electrical inspection passes Day Two * 7:00 AM: Gather around the home to pray * Noon: Insulation is installed; drywall is underway * Dinner: Drywall is complete; mudding is progressing with our unique accelerated process; landscaping is started * Evening: Painting is complete Day Three * 7:00 AM: Gather together to pray * Noon: Trim is installed; interior doors are hung; flooring is partially installed * Dinner: Flooring is complete; kitchen cabinets are installed; electrical and plumbing trim-out is complete Day Four * 7:00 AM: Gather to pray; install appliances; complete all touch-up; finish landscaping * Noon: All of the family?s furniture is moved in; pictures hung; curtains hung * 2:00 PM: Dedication of home; Bible, bread and the keys to the home are presented as gifts to the household A Blitz Build teaches many things: patience, faith, humility, endurance, the power of love and focus. As you know from Part one - I was trapped in Hell with no phone. Needless to say this state of affairs lasted all through Saturday - no working iPhone, dead old phone, and despair. AT&T's deranged rate plans and nonsense were killing me. "Save me AT&T" Well, Saturday night I called AT&T again - I'd waited over the 24 hours and still had no phone. After another 4 hours of phone calls and crazy ideas, at 12:30am (why is it always the midnight support staff that actually try and help me?) a got a rep who called the Activation department with me and we both sat on hold. Finally we got word back - "blue plan" customers were supposed to change their plans before activating the phone - once you try and activate the phone on a "blue" plan, you're done - the phone will never work. The only fix is to go to a "corporate" AT&T store and get the SIM card replaced. Reading the Apple discussion boards revealed this solution has worked for other people. So I wait until Sunday. A trip to the Mall First stop: AT&T. I go in and wait in line. I end up telling the manager my story - and how AT&T customer support left me with explicit instructions to go to the SHV AT&T store and get a new SIM card. The manager informs me they don't have SIMs for the iPhone, they can't give me one, and they won't swap out the phone with a new one. She then, at my insistence, calls her manager - who doesn't answer. Her helpful suggestion? Buy a new pre-paid phone with a new number and use that until this can be straightened out. Completely no help. And she has "no idea" why AT&T support directed me to her store - the issue is clearly an Apple one. Second stop: Apple store. Vowing to not leave the mall unless I have a working phone (or am escorted out by security) I hit the Apple store for help. I speak with John (the SHV store manager) and the crew - Moose and I talk a bit, and I explain my story. Needless to say, these are Apple people, and they know what "customer service" means. Moose and I work something out, and I leave the store with a new phone. I'm still not leaving the mall. I need a working phone. So I walk over to the comfy chairs outside the Apple store and pull out my laptop. Attach the phone. Go through the activation process all over again (nervous this time)... and it works! Within 3 minutes the phone is active and I have a text message from AT&T "welcoming" me to AT&T. A test phone call outbound and a test phone call inbound, and I'm up and running! So a BIG THANK YOU to the South Hills Village Apple store for fixing my problem so quickly and with no fuss. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to close up my laptop and walk back into the store and thank them again :) Charles -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The potentially record-breaking heat and resulting air conditioner use in the West today will lead to high power consumption. Why's that something to mention to editors? Because you could be editing along and find that there's either a power sag (brownout), a rotating outage or some other unexpected power related problem. Good idea to test your UPS (uninterruptable power supply) if you have one, to make sure that you won't suddenly have your computer go down in the middle of work. I'd suggest saving your current work, closing all applications, and then pulling the UPS's plug from the wall to see whether it does what its expected to do... which is keep power flowing to your computer and peripherals long enough for you to safely close the work you're doing and shut down your computer and other equipment until the problem's passed. If your UPS DOESN'T work... you may need to check the battery to see whether it's held a charge, or to unplug everything but your monitor and CPU to see whether the UPS is overloaded and kicking off. Replacing the battery isn't a big deal if needed. Most sizes for UPS's that handle a tower and monitor are under $50. Finding a local battery source may be tougher depending on where you are... in which case, spending $50-$250 to buy a new UPS might be a smart investment. You might also want to go to your FCP settings and change the frequency of project auto-saves to every five minutes ESPECIALLY if you DON'T have a UPS on your machinery. It'll give yourself an extra margin of safety in case something unexpected happens, and mean you won't have too much work to recreate if there's a problem. And if there IS a power outage that keeps your home/office based system down... here are a few options: Arrange with other studios/editors to share space in the event your facility is out of commission and they have power... That's something useful for floods, fires and other catastrophes. Broadcasters often have studio sharing arrangements in place for just this kind of problem. KCBS once temporarily moved to KSFO's (then) Fairmont Hotel studios when a big natural gas main broke outside the downtown high rise KCBS used to be in and those buildings were evacuated. Regularly back up your project's files and captured material to external drives in preparation for using a laptop for editing... and use inverters and your vehicle's power/AC to both power the externals and to keep you cool. Rent a motor home with generator and AC. Park it in the shade somewhere after moving your system (and UPS with powerline conditioning) into it... then keep on cutting... Buy/Rent a generator that's big/stable enough to keep your system afloat... through a UPS in order to condition the incoming power... Find somewhere cool to be so your cranial computer doesn't get overheated. Grab some sun block and head for the body of water nearest you... taking plenty of potable H20 and portable shade. And if you leave your office/editing suite for a while, it might be wise to shut down your gear so that if there's a power incident while you're gone, your gear is less likely to be affected. Today, we set a new record for refurbishing Macintoshes. We prepared 18 DV iMacs for Goodwill's ComputerWorks store on the South Side, and another 11 older, tray-load CD iMacs for our Outreach clientele. This 29-machine total surpasses the previous record of 18 5200/5400 Power Macs done by me during a 14-hour day at our former home at the Center for Hope in Ambridge. The previous experience is just a blur in my memory now, but I can say there was a great deal caffeine from many Diet Pepsis involved. These kinds of numbers are made possible by Dave's NetBoot server, and the Mac OS images prepared for us by Charles Firth. We were also in what some athletes refer to as "The Zone." You just can't explain it, things just happen that way. We now have a stock of 25 DV iMacs waiting to go to the Goodwill ComputerWorks store. Depending on the individual machine's configuration, the prices at the store are ranging between $140.00 and $180.00. With the software installed, it's a great deal for a beginner's computer. As in: MS Windows Vista for $5.00. SpiderMan 3 on DVD: $2. (and so on). Well, the case drags on (the case is actually over - it's just the "loser" refuses to cooperate with the ruling) and now it appears Antigua has gotten support from the EU, India, and Japan.. all of whom may also levy sanctions. Now MacWorld and CNet are reporting that - according to NDP research - Apple's Desktops have crossed 10% and the MacBooks now closing on 15% of the laptop market. This puts MacBooks in 4th place behind HP, Toshiba and Gateway. The figures are likely to increase in the 3rd quarter, which is traditionally strong for Apple, because of the back-to-school sales. The above stats are backed up by my own experiences. When I walked into the BestBuy store recently, something was very different. It took me a second to realize that among the usual scenery, I was also looking at a big section featuring Macs. So Apple is back with a vengeance and has re-ignited the PC war. Despite dropping the word computer from its name, Apple still desperately wants to win the PC market. But why? Surely Steve Job's spite and ego play a role, but more importantly, desktops and laptops still hold the lion's share of profitability in the computing industry. The computer is becoming, if it has not already become, the personal media center. Laptops are literally everywhere and it is likely to remain the same way for at least a decade. So Apple is fighting as hard as it can to fix its mistake of the past - letting Redmond win the personal computing market. The Wonderful World of Apple Computers At a glance Apple has got it all - a better product, die hard fans, top-notch marketing, funny commercials and an amazing set of companion products. Since Steve Jobs returned in 1997, the company has been on an impeccable comeback run. The stock charts below clearly reflect the fact that Apple executes quickly and correctly, while Microsoft has been having problems lately. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It will be an all day event. TIME: Arrive at Allegheny Outfitter's Canoe Rental before 09:30 AM; parking available at the outfitter. You should allow 2 ? - 3 hours to drive from Cranberry Township. Eat a good breakfast before the canoe trip. There are fast-food restaurants in Warren (e.g. McDonalds...several folks routinely meet there for breakfast). The outfitter is located on the bank of the Allegheny River directly behind the Eagles Club in Warren, PA. Their address is: 2101 Pennsylvania Avenue, East (physical address) (20 Wildlife Lane is their mailing address) Warren, PA 16365 Phone: (814) 723-1203 See their website: http:// www.alleghenyoutfitters.com The outfitter will provide canoes, paddles, life-vests and shuttle service to the base of Kinzua Dam. The canoe trip will take ~ 5-6 hours and end at Betts Park (3-4 miles below Warren, PA). There is an earlier take-out, approximately the half-way point, at the outfitters if you prefer a shorter trip. The outfitter will also provide shuttle service back to our vehicles. We should depart for home by late afternoon and return to Cranberry Township by 8:00 - 9:00 PM Saturday evening. DIRECTIONS: More detailed directions and maps will be provided to those participating prior to the event. WHO: This is a family and friends fellowship event open to EVERYONE. Safety, experiencing God, and absorbing the beauty of his creation are our top priorities, and an adult should be available for each child (~8 and under). Parents should use their discretion with younger children. Canoes will accommodate 2-3 persons; one seat at each end of the canoe, with room for one (two if small children) to sit in the middle of the canoe (no seat in the middle so bring something comfortable to cushion the floor of the canoe). The outfitter also provides a life vest (floatation device to be worn at all times while in the canoe) and a paddle for each person. The river depth varies, and the water will be over your head in some places. The river current varies, although there are no dangerous rapids. Canoes can tip over (and do...take it from one who knows!), particularly if folks "horse around." You should not intentionally flip a canoe, although folks need to be prepared if they do overturn. Common sense is CRITICAL! WHAT TO BRING: Weather appropriate clothing for mid-August. You may (and likely will....COUNT ON IT!) get wet, old sneakers or sandals for swimming and wading in the river, hat, sun screen, sun glasses, light weight long sleeve shirt for a break from the sun, insect repellent (if desired), small cooler with snacks/drinks for the canoe trip...PLEASE NO GLASS!, litter bag for the canoe, rope or tie-down straps to secure items in the canoe, extra dry clothes for after the trip, and a camera (at your own risk). There are several islands along this stretch of the river. We usually stop a few times for a break to wade, swim, explore and snack. COST: Canoe rental will be $33/boat and includes the paddles, floatation devices and shuttle. Note, the fee is per boat, and not per person. You will need additional money for food or snacks. WHAT TO DO NEXT: The reservation for canoes must be finalized by Sunday, August 5, 2007. A sign-up sheet for the event is located in the church Greeting Area at the Visitor Desk. Sign up and provide a check for $33.00 to Allegheny Outfitters to reserve your canoe. Message-ID: Hello, everyone. I am Marty Swartz, one of the folks that Dave Sevick has ( coaxed / tricked / Shanghaied ) into the leadership team for the Mac rebuilding project now underway at Goodwill's Computer Recycling Center in Lawrenceville. I am partial to PowerBooks. We have a nice stack of 12" iBook Dual USB systems to rebuild. Like the Clamshell model before them, this model uses the main battery for preserving Parameter RAM settings. We need to find a double-handful of used batteries that will hold just a bit of a charge. These will allow us to deliver systems that will keep proper date and time, even if the battery does not hold enough charge to actually run the computer. I know we have a ton of iBook folks out there. If you are a packrat like me, you stashed away your previous battery when it croaked, "just in case". If so, please pull it down off the shelf, blow off the dust, and help us bring these PowerBooks back to a useful life. And ..thanks! Regards, - Marty Swartz -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... YES! Message-ID: A big THANK YOU goes out to Jan Allen, who earlier today passed along two used iBook batteries. One of them is charging right now, and will allow us to get our VERY FIRST Mac laptop, a Dual-USB iBook 500, ready for sale at ComputerWorks. If anybody else has discarded batteries on the shelf, (or any other unused Apple item for that matter,) please pass them along. Apple makes thousands of systems a day: where to they all GO???? In my previous plea, I forgot to add one item of tasty trivia. If you totally disassemble a Dual-USB iBook all the way down to the frame, you end up with 61 screws and one magnet. :) The magnet helps hold the keyboard in place. The 61 number does NOT include disassembly of the screen and its bezel. Please keep those back-shelf space-consumers coming, folks. The more Macs we can rescue, the more we can help folks who are Mac people, but who just don't know it yet! Best regards, - Marty Swartz
