I made seating charts at home on Freehand MX and then switched seats at the semester change while at school. I used my flash drive to transfer the data back to the desktop at home. When I went to open it with the same program that created it a window told me it was not a proper file and could not open it. A similar thing happened yesterday with Keynote 2.0. I made two presentations at school with the laptop and, after transferring to the desktop at home, I tried to open them. Keynote (same version on both machines) told me it could not open the document as well. Is it a problem with the two versions of OSX? Will this all go away when I install 10.5 on both machines? Is there a continuing problem with the Intel chip and the dark side? Any help will be appreciated as I have lots of curriculum to revise and I really want to only do it once. It needs to work seamlessly on both computers. Thanks Al -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: Dear all, I was hoping to upgrade my Macbook (white 2 GHz Core 2 Duo, non pro) to a faster 7200 rpm hard drive soon. Charles pointed out to me that this could lead to a heat issue since 7200 rpm drives consume much more energy and dissipate much more heat than 5400 rpm hard drives. This might be the reason why Apple is not offering a 7200 rpm as BTO option in their store. I checked the tech specs of the drive built in my Macbook and a 7200 drive from Hitachi and it is true: Power consumption is considerably higher. But I still don't want to give up: There are laptop computers out there that use 7200 rpms. Macbook Pros can be ordered with 7200 rpm drives. And I really really want a faster drive. Has anyone of you ever upgraded a Macbook with a 7200 rpm drive and therefore has some experiences to share? The drive built in my Macbook is a Fujitsu MHV2080BHPL. Power consumption: read/write 1.9W, idle 0.9W. The drive I was planning to buy is a Hitachi Travelstar E7K100. Power consumption: read/write 2.3W, idle 2.1W. Especially the consumption during idle worries me a bit? Kind regards / Viele Gr??e Christian Krenner -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The drives get its power from the USB port. Basically the drive does a great job both on my Mac mini and my Macbook. However there is one flaw that annoys me a lot: Whenever it put any of my computers into standby mode, the hard drive doesn't seem to be notified of that and just keeps running and running. This obviously will decrease the life span of the drive considerably. Of course I have told my Mac to switch off drives if possible in the energy preferences but the external drive still ignores this. I know that external USB devices can be put into standby mode. But the Mac seemingly doesn't do that. This might make sense with USB hardware like keyboards and mice which should be able to wake up the computer and therefore need power even when in standby mode. But it's all wrong with a hard drive. In Windows XP (I know, please don't hit me for referring to that) the standby behaviour can be explicitly adjusted for each USB device in device manager. So you can tell Windows not to switch off your keyboard but switch off your hard drive and mouse etc. when standby mode is activated. I haven't found anything similar in MacOS. Since this clearly is a problem that can be solved by software, does anyone of you know how this can be done in MacOS? Are there any tools or patches out there that might help? I must assume that there are hundreds if not thousands of users out there that suffer from the same problem. Thanks and best regards to you all Christian Krenner P.S.: Just unplugging the drive during standby is not an option either. When the drive is unplugged the Mac immediately wakes up from standby and complains about a drive that has been "illegally" removed. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have a two-year old iMac running 10.3.9. It is configured to turn off my Lacie external hard drive when I put the computer to sleep. My wife runs an eMac also using 10.3.9. I could not figure out a way, on her computer, to duplicate the behavior described above. Using Procare, I consulted an Apple expert. After I posed the question to him, he excused himself for a very long time to search his literature and to consult with other experts. Upon his return he gave what he represented as the definitive answer, namely, that it could not be done an eMac. It true, this leads to the conclusion that hardware plays a part in this issue. In a joint statement the companies said that, "Apple Computers will own the name Apple, the apple logos and all related trademarks," and that the company would license some trademarks back to the Beatles' company. Neil Aspinall, the Beatles' longtime right-hand man and Managing Director of Apple Corps, said the company was happy to put the battle behind them, explaining that, "The years ahead are going to be very exciting times for us. We wish Apple Inc. every success and look forward to many years of peaceful co-operation with them." Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said that, "It feels great to resolve this in a positive manner and in a way that should remove the potential of further disagreements in the future. We love the Beatles, and it has been painful being at odds with them over these trademarks." In typical fashion, Ringo Starr said he's "pleased to finally get this contre-temps behind us," and he added that he's looking forward to getting a "free iPhone in the mail." Last year, the Beatles lost a lawsuit which claimed that the computer company's iPod and iTunes download service broke a 1991 agreement preventing the computer company from using its trademark for products "whose principal application is music." The new settlement ends the case. The settlement which had been rumored to be all but a done deal over the past few weeks, leads the way for the Beatles' catalogue to finally be made available through Apple's iTunes download service. According to various sources, an exclusive deal between the Beatles and iTunes may happen once the long-rumored revamping of the Beatles catalogue is complete. The Beatles' spokeswoman Elizabeth Freund said that both companies had nothing to say about a future Beatles-iTunes deal, explaining that "This deal has nothing to do with that. This is strictly a trademark agreement." Some speculate that an online kick-off for the Beatles catalogue either on the street and/or through iTunes might center around the 40th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper on June 1st, although the Beatles' camp has been tight-lipped about online plans or future re-releases. Gene Munster, senior research analyst with investment bank Piper Jaffray & Co, told businessweek.com that the settlement was inevitable: "It goes from impossible to a lock that it's going to happen -- it's a function of time at this point. I bet they move pretty fast. For Apple (Corps), it was critical that they got this taken care of." Munster estimated that Apple Inc. paid the Beatles $50 to $100 million for the ownership of the Apple name. So far none of the Beatles' group or solo catalogues are available for legal downloading online, with the exception of a few albums by Starr and a handful of Beatles tracks on compilations. Apple Corps is jointly owned by the surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison. The company formally owned the exclusive copyrights for "Apple Records," "Apple Music," "Apple Publishing," and "Apple Electronics." Apple Corps began nearly 40 years ago, and was first mentioned on the back cover of their legendary 1967 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He recently bought a new 20" Dell LCD monitor to use with his PowerMac. The monitors native resolution is 1650 x 1050. Unfortunately, when we connects the new monitor to his PowerMac's DVI port, the only resolution he gets to choose is 1280 x 1024. Seemingly the PowerMac doesn't recognize the monitors native resolution correctly. Is there any way to force the Mac to use 1650 x 1050 on the Dell monitor? What could be the reason for this strange behaviour? If he connects the monitor to the PowerMacs VGA port, the 1650 x 1050 resolution is available, but naturally with a much worse picture. I should add that his PowerMac has got a ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card. The graphics card can display resolutions beyond 1920 x 1280. Thanks for your help in advance! The simple answer is: "Apple recommends using the LAN port because odds are good you have an existing network with an existing Default Gateway. Using the WAN port will possibly break your network unless you are willing and able to reconfigure some stuff, and we're so not going there in our quickly worded setup guide." This is the same as the older Airports, or any Wireless router for that matter. And actually has nothing to do with roaming (or wireless) - heck, you'll probably not use the WAN port even if you only have one Airport base station :) (I have a heck of a time convincing people to ignore the whole 'your cable is plugged in LAN and it should be in WAN' notice the Airports give out) Here's the longer reason why they recommend the LAN port; if it wasn't just an idle question :) *** WARNING - I'm going to get technical here. I think it's very interesting. You may not. *** The Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is one box that contain 4 distinct devices. 1) A Firewall (which, and this is important, is also a Router) 2) A switch (new with the 802.11n boxes.. older Airport base stations didn't have multiple LAN ports) 3) A Wireless Access Point (AP) 4) A print & SAN server (The SAN server is also new - the print server is not) So.. it's easier if you break down what you're trying to do logically for these four devices. In particular, we're going to focus on the Firewall. From the firewall's perspective, the other three devices (switch, AP, print/SAN server) are all on the "LAN" side of the firewall - they're "inside" the network. While whatever is attached to the WAN port is (logically) the WAN - "outside" the network. So.. from a firewall perspective, where do you attach the Cable/DSL modem? Well, normal thought would imply the WAN port of the Airport Extreme - after all, the Cable/DSL modem is the "outside" gateway - it should be on the other side of the firewall. And in many cases, this is correct. But odds are good that in today's world you already have an internal network setup - you may not know it, but it's likely that your Cable/ DSL modem is also a firewall/router - and adding the AEBS as a second firewall (using the WAN port to attach to the modem) will add a layer of confusion and potential issues (doing what we call "Double Natting" - more details on this will come) - even to the point of not working without reconfiguring both devices. Good luck getting iChat, port forwarding, FTP, remote access, etc to work through a Double NAT. Basically, as a rule of thumb, having 2 firewalls requires some careful planning and is mostly for large corporations & schools. It's not something you want to do for a SOHO environment. So Apple is going the "simple, just get it to work" route and recommends using the LAN port. After all, they have no idea how your current setup is configured, and really don't want to get into it. So instead you use the LAN port on the AEBS to connect the DSL/Cable modem. Hopefully why will become clear if you can just stick with me. In other words, by default Apple recommend you don't use the Firewall portion of the AEBS at all - leave it alone unless you're sure you intend to use it. (The vast majority of Airport base stations I install don't use the WAN port at all - they're APs and nothing else. Rarely is the Airport also acting as a firewall) It all boils down to TCP/IP - and how you want traffic to flow. Maybe one day I'll do a "TCP/IP demystified" MUG meeting if you guys like - I personally love TCP/IP, subnetting, NAT, DHCP, DNS, and that whole mess but can imagine it's sort of an eye-glazing topic for most people. ;) But in extremely simple terms - You want everything "inside" the firewall (whatever is acting as a firewall, maybe the AE, maybe the modem, maybe another box) to be on the same network... so they can all easily talk to eachother. This means they all need to be on the same subnet, and have IP address that are darn similar. For the sake of simplicity, think of "subnet" as the same thing as "local network" when reading things like this Apple article or this email. :) For example: 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.2 192.168.1.100, etc (All addresses are 192.168.1.something) Anyone with an address on this network can talk to anyone else on this network with no problems - they can find each other fine (and Bonjour will work fine). They can't talk to anyone else. They can only talk to people on the same network. Period. But what if they need to talk to someone on another network? (such as www.apple.com, which is certainly not on your local network)- well, TCP/IP has what's called the "Default Gateway" (OSX calls it the "Router" address)- this is an address on the local network and is sort of a "send everything else here and he'll take care of it" address. 95% of the time, this Default Gateway will be the "inside" address of a Router. It's important to remember that the Default Gateway is on the same network - in our example 192.168.1.1 might be the Default Gateway. If it wasn't on the same network, you wouldn't be able to talk to it. This is what the Router (and all firewalls are routers) is all about - a Router is any device (AEBS, DSL modem, firewall, etc) that routes traffic between two networks - for example, your LAN (192.168.1.x) and your WAN (75.34.233.x). So by definition, a router is actually on two networks - straddling the line - and forwards packets back and forth as needed. (A Firewall does the same thing, but actually cares about what those packets are, and if they're friendly or not.) So a router has a minimum of two IP addresses - one on the LAN side (and part of the local network) and one on the WAN side (part of the "outside" network) - and yes, the WAN address has another default gateway (in case the packet is meant for someplace farther away then the immediate 75.34.233.x network) which is probably another router, and so on. (On average your packet will probably bounce through 10-15 routers from your computer to www.apple.com.) So say you have the network in the picture - some wired computers, a DSL modem, some wireless computers, and two AEBSs. It's clear you want the wireless computers and the wired computers to all be on the same network (so they can talk to each other, share files and printers, Bonjour works, and it's all friendly) - so there is NO reason for a Router to be even remotely involved until you want to deal with traffic leaving the LAN and heading out into the world. Which is what the Default Gateway address is for. And remember, most DSL/Cable modems these days are already doing that. Which means they are already the Default Gateway and have an IP address on the LAN network. and in order for everyone else on the LAN network to talk to this address (which they're using as their default gateway) then, well, the DSL modem must be attached to the LAN port on the AEBS. This is also why you need to configure the AEBSs as Bridges - there's a setting in the AEBS to use NAT (network address translation) between the wireless computers and the wired computers. This must be turned off. NAT is basically what a Router is all about. So if you want the wireless and the wired computers to be on the same network, you can't have a router in the mix. So no NAT. Turning off NAT configures the AEBS to not route, and treats both wireless and wired as the same network. Still with me? Good :) All of this has nothing to do with wireless roaming except for one minor fact: For roaming to work, wireless clients connected to one AEBS must be on the same IP network as wireless clients attached to the other AEBS. This is, if you think about it, logical. Your laptop has an IP address (say.. 192.168.1.103) - it's connected to the "192.168.1.x" network via Airport... if you drift into another room and your wireless signal disconnects from one AEBS and connects to another - well.. your laptop only knows how to talk to the "192.168.1.x" network - if that second AEBS is on the "192.168.2.x" network, you're screwed. You can only talk to 192.168.1.x addresses, and this AEBS can only talk to 192.168.2.x addresses. So Rule #1 of roaming - every base station needs to be bridging between wireless and wired networks (so the wireless laptops are on the same network as the wired machines) and their wired networks need to be connected to the LAN ports (so they're on the same wired network, and there's no Router or Firewall in the way) - so they're all in the same network. And somewhere on that network there can be a Default Gateway (if you want to get to the Internet - which is technically optional) What the Default Gateway is in all this is irrelevant. (it can be an AEBS with a modem attached to the WAN port, or the DSL modem directly, or on a Proxy server, or another firewall, or whatever) - yes, to make it even more confusing, there's nothing stopping me setting up a roaming wireless network and using the WAN port on the AEBS to connect the DSL modem. I just need to configure that AEBS to route properly, and make sure whatever it's connected to is not also routing (unless I have a real good reason for a "Double NAT" scenario). Roaming also requires certain wireless configuration settings - which have nothing to do with TCP/IP or Apple, but are part of the whole 802.11 standard. At minimum, the networks need to share the same SSID (network name). They also need to have identical security settings (WEP, WPA, Radius, whatever) and they may also need manual channel configuration to prevent crosstalk. Still with me? Now it gets fun.... Just kidding. I've run out of steam. One day I'll explain why "local network" and "subnet" aren't actually the same thing, and what that darn "subnet mask" is really all about. (and why 255.255.255.0 is so common as a subnet mask that most people wonder why it's even a user-editable setting) Hopefully this helped clarify the muddy waters a bit :) Charles On Feb 20, 2007, at 5:39 PM, R Adams wrote: > The attachment is from an Apple document discussing the design of > 802.11n networks. The two men will jointly discuss the history and future of the digital revolution in an unrehearsed, unscripted, onstage conversation on May 30 with D co-producers Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher. Both executives have made multiple individual appearances at the conference, which will celebrate its fifth anniversary this year, and is known as D5. But this will be their first joint session at D, and a highly unusual event. In addition to participating in the joint session with Mr. Gates, Mr. Jobs will appear on his own in a separate segment at D5 to discuss the latest developments at Apple, including new ventures such as the iPhone and Apple TV. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will also appear at the conference in his own segment, to discuss Windows, Office, the Xbox, Zune, and other topics. The D5 conference will also feature an impressive roster of other leaders in technology and media. Confirmed speakers include Google CEO Eric Schmidt; CBS President Les Moonves; Cisco CEO John Chambers; film director George Lucas; online pioneer Steve Case; Time Inc. CEO Ann Moore; News Corp. President Peter Chernin; Palm founder Jeff Hawkins; and Steve Chen and Chad Hurley of YouTube. Like past editions of the conference, D5 will be an all-interview event, without canned speeches. The conference, which is sold out, will take place May 29-31 near San Diego, California. For more information, see d.wsj.com. Since this very interesting article is a little dense to read in its entirety, I thought Tech Tails readers would enjoy reading some highlights. ? Going against conventional thought, the study determined that increased temperature and/or activity had little or no correlation to failure rate. By extension, it was found that drives spinning up and spinning down most often had the highest failure rates. This means it's best to uncheck the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible) box in Energy Save--at least in terms of hard drive health. ? Some SMART (self monitoring and reporting technology) parameters are excellent indicators of impending mechanical failure. Among failed drives, a good chunk gave no warning by SMART, even though SMART-monitored parameters were to blame for failure. For this reason, SMART is most useful as a statistical predictor of failure for a population of drives rather than on individual devices. With that in mind, if your drive reports SMART errors you should at the very least immediately perform a full backup. ? About 3% of drives failed in the first three months, 1.8% in the first 6 months, 1.7% in the first year. From there, failure rates jump to approximately 8% in the second year, 9% in the third year, fall to 6% in the fourth year, and jump back to 7% in the fifth year. The new ad was described as being made for the Oscars, although no further details on the content of ad were available. The 79th Academy Awards telecast airs on ABC this Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern. Last year, 38.9 million people watched the Oscars ceremony on ABC. Apple?s ?1984? advertisement ? shown nationally during the 1984 Super Bowl ? introduced the Macintosh and remains one of the best-rated advertisements in history, in polls taken many times since then. The company has more recently focused its advertising on comparisons between Macs and PCs, using actors Justin Long (as the Mac) and John Hodgman (as the PC). Apple introduced the iPhone at Macworld Expo in January. While not yet released, the $499 smartphone has caused waves in the wireless market as analysts expect the demand for the touchscreen device to be very high. http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/02/23/iphoneoscar/index.php -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Steve Jobs delivered this commencement address at Stanford University and it's one of the more inspiring commencement addresses we've ever had a chance to hear. Jobs tells three stories of endurance through his education, his career, and his diagnosis with cancer, and through it all his advice is: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish."
