I have some more up-to-date info on that. The "official" word is that only hi-def sets are supported. But that doesn't mean standard def sets won't work. ?TV will put out a 480i signal which is what standard def is, and some people are reporting success and some people aren't when using it on a standard def set. What ?TV will do to display true 16x9 hi-def content on a 4x3 standard def television, I don't know. But on my drive home from NPMUG last night I was listening to Adam Christianson's MacCast podcast ( http://wwwmaccast.com ) where he was talking about running his new ?TV with his Sony Vega standard def TV. I have the same brand of TV, just a little larger size. It has one set of component inputs, which is what is needed to hook upt to the ?TV unit (or HDMI inputs, which you won't find on a standard-def set). Adam reported great results. He said everything looks great as far as listening to music and watching TV shows and movies, etc. He said some audio podcasts had some volume problems and video podcasts might not look all that great because they weren't encoded in a format for ?TV. Most video podcasters will probably start putting out a feed with an ?TV-encoded version. His standard-def TV does support a "16x9 enhanced mode" which may help things work well with the ?TV. So, I'd check out your TV's functionality before buying an ?TV and expecting it to "just work" with your standard-def set. There was also a voicemail from an audio guy who says that the ?TV does support the ProLogic 2 kind of Doby 5.1 Surround Sound, but not the newer type of surround sound called Dolby Digital. I'm not up on surround sound, so I'm just repeating what was said. The caller did say that most of the equipment that "normal" people have will use the ProLogic 2 kind of Dolby 5.1. Dolby Digital is "higher end". I have neither, yet. :-) Adam had even older equipment that support ProLogic (not ProLogic 2), so he couldn't get surround sound to work. Dolby 7.1 surround sound is not supported at all, yet. Since I already have a Mac set up as my media center and connected to my standard-def TV, I will problaby pass on the ?TV for now. In a few years, when I buy an HDTV I will pick up one then. By then the HDTV's will be even cheaper, and the ?TV will probably have even more features (like DVR capability?) Sorry for the long post, McC P.S. I can't make the Monroeville meeting tonight. See you next time. I bought a real low serial number Apple II and finally had 4 floppy drives and almost every card made for it with all the slots filled and the rest of the cards on the shelf to swap out, including the old CPM card. I bought, arguably, one of the first-in-line Mac 128?s at the Harvard Bookstore on introduction and waited a year for the promised MacDraw, which I never received. Hmmm. I started a number of Mac User Groups, and joined many, eventually serving as Apple Librarian for Apple II and Mac programs, Vice- President and President, but mostly preferred to be the Apple Liaison with Apple, the Mother Ship. As Apple Ambassador, I helped grow the UAUG to its peak of over 650 members through a number of programs. In my ?other world? I was into Electronics, teaching and installing Cat Scanners, Special Procedure Rooms, X-Ray Systems, etc. But my favorite world was the Apple Computers. Eventually, I started my own Apple Storefront Mac Service business in New York, where we were turning around Mac repairs in hours, not days. Yep. Parts included. We were extremely good at it, even able to swap a Mac Plus Video-Power Supply Board in a pitch-black room, close it up and turn it on and it worked! The good old days! Everybody said ?You could write a book about all your experiences!? I finally did! I wrote about the dark side of Apple Computer, the side dealers knew about and never talked about, and the Service people. I also wrote about my beloved User Groups and the Vendors that we all cherish. How can we keep our Vendors today? How can we keep our User Groups alive? Or can we? There?s less and less User Groups today. Are they dying out? Does Apple even care? I decided to take on the challenge of the User Group, explaining their positions to Apple. Did it matter in the long term? I?m now retired and living in Lakeland, Florida, and still care. I still dabble with Apple repairs, but no longer as a viable business. I still love User Groups, but have a number of Macs AND a couple of PC?s. I use computers for different purposes and find this works for me. I hope you will find my book revealing and entertaining both, because I call it as I see it; I?m retired and don?t give a damn. Apple can?t hurt me anymore, I?m not in the business. My book is called ?the Naked Serviceman? and is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites. It has what Guy Kawasaki called a ?ribald? cover. In fact, Guy Kawasaki (the original Apple Computer software evangelist) proofed the book prior to publication and said in his blurb ?A rambling, ribald tale of Macintosh passion and persistence. Any insider will find this an interesting and fun read. Any outsider won?t have a clue.? Fred Showker, who has been a regular presenter of many an early Expo session and Mac Evangelist in his own right, and also an old NAUGSAW member, also previewed the book and wrote the following Forward to it. I hope your members might purchase this walk down my Mac Memory Lane and enjoy the book and my passions with User Groups and its members and my love-hate relationship with the Mother Ship. Not the Computers or OS, which I still love, but the management philosophies which drive it and nearly destroyed it, time and again. I?d appreciate you passing this on to your members. Take a look at the book and its chapter heading in the previews on the websites. Hope you like it. Thanks again ? George M Engel. FLMUG, UAUG mug. Etc. etc. etc. etc. ?Forward? from the book Mice, Icons, folders, double-click, click and drag, ram, and yes, even windows... they're all ubiquitous in today's society. Twenty- five years ago they had completely different meanings -- or had never been heard of. Over the past two decades, digital technology has changed nearly every facet of the way we work; the way we play; and above all, the way we think. Of course, those two wild and crazy Steves out in California played a big hand in the digitization of the world. From the Woz's first plywood box to Steve's glistening new, to-die-for tower, the Apple story is wrapped in a cultural aura like no other in history. In the relentless swirl of technology, no other company has evoked such loyalty and devotion in its followers. Apple has spawned so many heros, legends and fanatics, it's clear the story isn't really about hardware or software. While the industry spins its promises of terabyte futures, the iLife and an iPod in every pot, the phenomenon is actually about people. The story is about a small company made much bigger than life by those millions who love the Mac. It's about people who would tattoo the OS 9 or 'Sad Mac' icon on their arm. Or people who paint their Volkswagens like an iMac. These are the people whose days start with the latest Mac rumors and end with an email tip from their favorite Mac discussion list. Perhaps you've been one of those who idolizes either Steve. Or both. Maybe you've known a true Evangelist who stood in line for two hours with the hopes of seeing Guy -- the first to plunk down money for the 'Netter's Dinner'; fought for a Newton Jean Jacket giveaway; or bookmarked Ilene's Party List. You could be one of those who enlisted in the Mac Marines to stand up and fight against the clones. Or, perhaps you anxiously await the latest edition of TidBITS or Cult of Mac. Maybe you actually know who Mac the Knife is, or attended the "Not the Mac the Knife Party". Maybe you own a tie-died "Raines" shirt, or a Mac wrist watch or a 'YUM' poster. If you are any of these, or happen to be a member of your local MUG (Mac User Group); or even if you just recently opened your first Apple box... Your MAC-ification won't be complete until you've met George Engel. From the early 1970s and his low serial number Apple II with 16k of RAM, to today's Mac powerhouse computers, George has been there, done that and managed to keep a good attitude about it. Well, let's just say an attitude. His depth of knowledge on the subject of Mac is rare. Aside from all the hype and celebrations, of which George has certainly been a part, he knows the innards from chip to chop. He knows the deep, dark secrets of the other side of the story. Yes folks, there is another side. After IBM and medical service, George became enthralled with the personal computer and Apple. At age fifty he opened his area's first and only Apple Service Center. So in addition to being a Mac "geek" he quickly became enlightened to the inside workings of Apple -- something few Mac loyalists ever witness. While most of us Mac users were happily becoming 'power users' from the original 128 to today's G5s, George was sharing the experiences of those other Mac Users who weren't quite so happy. The Dealer pipeline and the black hole of Apple Service has its own stories to tell; and herein George clues you in. George is one of those regulars at Macworld Expo, and I always look forward to catching up with him. It's always a joy to be around his unique manner, sharp wit and genuine interest in Mac fellowship. George's hard work and dedication to his own local User Group is an ongoing inspiration to us all -- and, he is never without a new Mac story. If you're lucky, you'll get one of his Mac horror stories. George says he's retired. Well, I'll believe that the day "PC?s" run the Mac OS! Because I know that what ever is going on with the Mac world, George will be there. And now ladies and gentlemen, the "Naked Serviceman" will share his journey with the rest of ?the rest of us? -- adding yet another side to the continuing story of Apple and the phenomenon called Mac. These are getting more popular with home users who have been struggling with spam for years, and are sick of their Windows machines getting destroyed. Basically, a whitelist-only filter assumes all email is spam, and blocks everything. People you want to hear from need to be approved. When a sender is approved they are added to the whitelist - a list of senders who are allowed through the filter. The way Spam Rival approves senders is by sending a bounce-back email to the sender basically saying "We got your email, but we're not going to pass it on to the person you're trying to contact until you jump through some hoops for us." The sender then jumps through the hoops (typically by going to a website and entering a code) and is added to the whitelist. All subsequent emails from that sender are automatically approved. (so senders don't have to keep doing this) You can also manually add addresses to the approved list. The advantage of a whitelist-only approach is the recipient gets almost no spam (except stuff that has a fake sender that happens to be in the whilelist). So people who do this tend to be pretty happy, if email is a casual thing and they don't have any way of dealing with spam (or are Windows users who constantly get infected by nasty emails). So when you sign up for a whitelist-only service your amount of spam drops to near zero. The negatives of the whitelist-only approach are: 1) The obvious one - if the sender doesn't jump through the hoops, you don't get the email. Your friends/family are likely to do what Spam Rival requires, but other people might not be. For example, if I'm sending an email to the NPMUG list and I get 4-5 bounce-backs from members who are using Spam Rival, I'm less likely to jump through those hoops for everyone. And I'm sure other "large recipient list" emails are going to be the same way. So it depends on how important email is to you - would you rather get all your important emails and put up with spam, or would you rather get no spam but risk also not getting "good" email? 2) Lag - Some people send email right before going offline (or to the dining room for food). So they send you an email, but don't notice the bounce-back for several hours. So if that email was time critical, it's now delayed waiting for the sender to approve it. And some whitelist-only subscriptions have a timer on how long the approval process is valid for an email. 3) The bounce-back can get filtered. A bounce-back is an automated message, and therefor can be incorrectly flagged as spam by some spam filters... so the sender sends the email, the recipient doesn't get it, and the sender never receives the bounce-back warning him the email didn't make it through. The communication fails. Not a big deal if it's your son sending a joke to you, but a pretty big deal if it's your son's college emailing you about tuition payments. 4) Ping-pong. If both users are using a whitelist-only service, the servers will play ping-pong. The sender will send an email, which is blocked by the filter for the recipient. That filter sends a bounce- back message to the sender, which is blocked by the sender's filter, which sends a bounce-back message to the recipient's filter, which blocks it and sends a bounce-back message to the sender's filter, which blocks it and sends.. you get the idea. 5) Email volume increases. Every piece of email sent to the whitelist- only user triggers a second email (the bounce-back). So in effect you're doubling the amount of email flooding the Internet. This can be a big problem during Trojan Storms that the one that hit at the beginning of April (where a huge outbreak of an email worm crushed mail servers all over the place due to the high number of emails hitting at once) 6) POP3-only. Most people don't know or care what this means, but it's important. It means you're not going to be using this for a business email server, and you can't use it for webmail. A minor quibble, admittedly. My personal opinion? If email isn't that critical to you, you get infrequent emails from a small number of people, and you don't have the resources to get something better, then go for it. But if email is important to you, you get a lot of email from different people, and you don't want to make your email senders jump through hoops for you, then don't use it. I personally would rather stab myself in the leg with a dirty spoon. :) But that's just my ?0.02. (Especially the spoon bit...) Here is my (additional) 2 centavos "against" these simplistic filters. I am the webmaster and e-commerce geek for a good-sized railway historical society. Like most, our e-store will send you an email copy of your receipt. But if you have an Earthlink or other whitelist filter, that receipt emaiil bounces back to us. The fulfillment officer, who is a retired fellow with the direct and friendly charm of a disturbed grizzly bear, has enough to do getting the orders out in a timely manner. He is not pleased by having to play this game of "mother-may-I". More than once the CUSTOMER has come back saying "where's my receipt"!! You can imagine his cheerful response. Bottom line, I see these whitelist gizmos as "damage" and added friction in the 'Net. There's a Nobel Prize waiting for the clever lad (or lassie) who delivers a smoother mechanism for email. How do I disable virtual memory in OS X? I know it can be done and I know a lot of people recommend against it, but I can't stand having my hard drive space eaten up (I don't even have 1GB free) and I know the directions are out there somewhere. (When I used OS 9 and earlier I never used virtual memory and managed fine) 2. Does anyone know a good disk defrag utility for OS X that is FREE? I used to use Norton SpeedDisk, a free copy of which came with Mac Secrets 2nd Edition by Dave Pogue and Joe Schorr, but it is a Classic application. I'm so sick of this iBook right now because of speed issues (3 minutes to quit Safari) and I'm thinking both of these would help me even if I lose the ability to run eight programs at a time. How do I disable virtual memory in OS X? Unix (which OS X is based on) requires virtual memory. It uses virtual memory to map in shared libraries and what not. You can disable swapfiles per this hint: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040809191855264 But if you're using swapfiles that are consuming your disk (as opposed to something else consuming your disk), then you're asking the system to do more than it has memory to achieve. You'll still have problems if you try to do the sam amount of stuff after disabling the swap files. > (When I used OS 9 and earlier > I never used virtual memory and managed fine) OS 9 and OS X are *extremely* dissimilar. You can't compare any OS 9 technique like this to OS X. > > 2. Does anyone know a good disk defrag utility for OS X that is FREE? HFS+ does a very good job of keeping the disk defragmented. You can use hfsdebug from this page : http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/apme/ fragmentation/ to see what your current fragmentaton is. > I'm so sick of this iBook right now because of speed issues (3 > minutes to quit Safari) and I'm thinking both of these would help me > even if I lose the ability to run eight programs at a time. How much RAM do you have? Is there room for more? It's best to have as much RAM as possible. Also be sure you quit applications you're not using. Use Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder) to see what the system is doing during these slow times and approach your machine debugging from there. Virtual Memory in OSX is very different from OS9 - it's more caching and swap files then "VM". I would strongly recommend you look for other ways to free up space on the drive - maybe by blowing out unused printer drivers or using Monolingual to strip out all the multi-language support. For example, the Canon drivers alone are 250MB - if you don't have a Canon printer, then nuke that folder :) (/Library/Printers/Canon) While typing this I spotted Mark's response. So I'll stop and and simply say "what he said" for the rest :) Charles On Apr 18, 2007, at 2:49 PM, Scott Baret wrote: > Okay, here goes... > > 1. How do I disable virtual memory in OS X? OS X 10.4.9. Occasionally, when I press a key, it keeps repeating, even though I "let up." I think this may have led to my having suddenly lost my Safari history file; went to open it, moved the mouse over to get at yesterday's history, and suddenly the whole file disappeared; no dialog box to delete or anything. Command-X did not bring it back. It was no longer in the Library under Safari. A search did not find it on my hard drive or in my trash. It went instantly to digital heaven. The same thing happened last week when my wife tried to open an item on a Safari bookmark bar file; the whole file disappeared instantly and irretrievably. Anyone seen this behavior? Upgraded to 10.4.9 yesterday and still had the problem this morning. Thanks, Flacc -- Flaccus M. B. April is almost over! (how the heck did that happen?) The next MUG meeting is this Sunday, April 22nd, at South Hills Village from 6pm to 7pm. As always, we'll have dinner after at the Roxy Cafe. It's going to be a pretty loose meeting - I don't have any major topic scheduled for once, so instead we're going to have a more open- ended conversation about: 1) DRM-free music on iTunes: worth the extra 30 cents? 2) Spam - news from the front line during the latest Trojan Storm 3) New Get A Mac ads 4) The Leopard delay: will the universe survive? 5) Save Internet Radio - should iTunes Radio only show Clear Channel? What stations (if any) do you listen to? I look forward to seeing everyone there! Charles -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The article compares this to a sleazy Persian Rug store offering discounts on items who's "regular" price is so astronomical that the discount only looks good in comparison. We have light tasks for the morning: Sweeping the floor, and applying the sealant with a mop until the sealant is gone. I'll be making some photos for posterity. I haven't heard anything yet, but Hosanna Industries may be making a visit to evaluate our electricity situation and plan for increased service. If Hosanna can't make it, we'll be done by 1:00 p.m Anyone wanting to get a look at the new diggs is welcome. You can even sit around and supervise if you wish... The Goodwill computer recycling facility (CRC) is at 55 55th St. in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood, just a block off Butler St. Enter the building at the far end where the computer recycling sign is. You can reach me at 412-477-9188 if you need to get in touch on Friday. Robert A.
