On January 3, 2006 Pittsburgh swore in it's 58th Mayor, Bob O'Connor of Squirrel Hill ..... the section of Pittsburgh that Carnegie Mellon University resides, ( Ave Tevanian's alma mater ). The Major fell ill with severe headaches ..... later to be diagnosed as multiple brain tumors .... on the eve of the Major League All Star Game here at PNC Park on July 10, 2006. The mayor has a very rare type of brain cancer, T-cell primary central nervous system lymphoma. After a long run of chemotherapy his condition has not improved. This morning he was taken off the ventilator and all life support. Hour by hour news reports on TV and radio will bring us the family announcement soon. http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/mayor/html/about_the_mayor.html I saw the mayor on the streets of Pittsburgh all the time, shaking hands and talking to everyone. He was a peace maker during union negotiations and a uniter of business, education and politics. In my humble opinion, one of the best leaders I have seen in a long time. Please keep Major Bob O'Connor in your prayers today. --------------- Now back to your regularly scheduled Apple program ........ --------------- Dave ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Dave Sevick Apple Certified Technical Coordinator Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist Helping people use technology in Pittsburgh Western PA, WV, OH, MD ... Message-ID: <9bedb3d65dce8be532cce5be727c2c2e@mac.com> Dear members, Yesterday we experienced a great mystery. Larry's G4 Powerbook 17" suddenly lost all its preferences and settings. All his mail settings, iTunes music, ...all personal preferences made over the past 18 months....GONE. All the programs opened as if it was the very first time they were used. After a bit of googling this morning we discovered the reason. He had changed the name of his home directory in FINDER instead of using System Preferences. (Don't ask why ~ I haven't!) We found this article which describes the situation completely. http://www.askdavetaylor.com/ renaming_my_home_directory_trashed_my_mac.html Does anyone have specific steps in how we could return this computer to normal? The article is helpful but only to a point. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! In addition, developers can create and browse third-party open source projects that are closely related to the Mac operating system. Current projects on Mac OS Forge include source code to the new iCal Server in Leopard Server, and Apache-licensed versions of Bonjour service discovery and Launched process management. While select projects in Mac OS X are featured on Mac OS Forge, a complete set of open source software within Mac OS X can be found by visiting the Apple Developer Connection. Here?s what Apple has to say about the site in a note at the Mac OS Forge page: ?Mac OS X includes a wide variety of open source software from FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, the GNU Project, and many more projects each its own vibrant developer community. Mac OS Forge is dedicated to supporting the developer community surrounding open source components specific to Mac OS X. Luke Ravenstahl assumes role as Mayor of Pittsburgh Message-ID: http://www.wpxi.com/news/9780402/detail.html Luke Ravenstahl Takes Over As Mayor City Council President Resume's Position POSTED: 8:59 pm EDT September 1, 2006 UPDATED: 9:34 pm EDT September 1, 2006 Friday evening former Mayor Bob O'Connor passed away from a rare form of cancer, leaving President Luke Ravenstahl as the new mayor. Ravenstahl?s thoughts and prayers are with the mayor and his family, but he knows that now since he is handling the drastic transition, he must be ready for it. Several days ago Ravenstahl commented on the issue. "I'm here, I'm the president, I've been elected by my district, I've been elected by my colleagues, and I?m more than confident that if and when I'm called upon I?m here to serve the residents of the city,? Ravenstahl stated. Ravenstahl was named City Council president just last year and was originally elected to council in 2003, making him the youngest councilman ever in the city. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College where he was an honor student and a star kicker on the football team. Actually, Ravenstahl was so well respected as a natural leader that he was elected captain of his team for his senior year. And although Ravenstahl has only been in politics for only three years he is no stranger. His father is a district justice on the Northside, and he has been exposed to the inner workings of bureaucracy for quite some time. Ravenstahl will begin assuming responsibilities immediately. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We joined a coalition of groups to lobby Vermont Senator Jeffords to actively support net neutrality in the telecommunications bill coming up to the Senate this month. The senator came out in favor of net neutrality last night, and we presented him with petitions and held the press conference to encourage his support. Vermont?s other Senator, Patrick Leahy, has been a net neutrality supporter from the beginning. This is one of the few times that I stood up with the ACLU, Vermont Public Interest Group, and groups such as the Christian Coalition and the National Gun Owners association to talk about a public policy issue. This is a vitally important issue that you should be aware of and talk about with your senators, too. More information is available at: http://www.savetheinternet.com/ The current telecommunications bill does not have protection for the concept of net neutrality included in the legislation. At the urging of a handful of telecommunications companies ? namely, Verizon, Comcast, Bell South, and AT&T ? the legislation would allow these very same internet "gatekeepers" to charge different rates for different levels of access to the net. This would mean that the larger companies could and would pay for faster page-loads and preferred access while smaller companies, bloggers, and others may be left with slow access or no access. The internet has been the most free common ground for communications in the history of humanity. A small company in the middle of nowhere with some good web-design skills can look as good and provide the same goods and services as a company that is much larger. With a tiered internet, that new entrepreneur might be locked out of her new venture because she cannot afford the extra fees for the higher level of access. The impact upon bloggers, news sites, and a free press is even more troublesome. An aggressive ISP might price these grassroots newsgroups and bloggers out of the market or even make it so their pages load so slowly that they are unusable. The only ones advocating for overturning the status quo of a free, neutral net are those same large telecommunications companies that want to make more money and exercise more control over the content on the net. Some of the very companies that could afford to pay these higher fees to gain faster access are the most vociferous supporters of net neutrality. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google could easily pay to be in the upper tier but have been very vocal and active in supporting a free internet. They do not see any benefit to allowing Comcast, Verizon, and Bell South to control internet content or speed. We've enjoyed a good summer of many Mac donations, so many that we've had to temporarily store machines in the hallway. This Saturday we need to clear the hallway so the Center can make preparations to host a health fair the following Saturday. We'll be moving some machines to the upper floor adjacent building, which used to be a former convent, for temporary storage, and reorganizing space we now have that's become pretty crowded as our donations have come in. For those who can't do any lifting, we have our traditional Mac tune- up activities to keep everyone busy. We have a new shipment of PRAM batteries, so we're all set for another season of Mac rehabilitation. I'll be there by 9:00 a.m. Feel free to join us at your convenience at any time during the day. RapidWeaver is the Web authoring tool that lets you focus on content, not coding. With it, you can set up your site in minutes, easily make changes and add pages at any time. A discount code will be provided. Our main topic in October will be on online Mac resources. For future meetings, if there is a topic you would like to see covered or that you would like to present, let us know. Nairobi, Kenya sports several FREE wireless hotspots in coffee shops. There is even a free connection in "Loki" - the airport shown in the recent movie "The Constant Gardener." (Your mileage WILL vary.) Firewire (aka IEE1394a) is rated at 400 Megabits per second. You'll almost never get this top speed, due to other factors. Actual data speed also depends on: cache available (both on the hard drive and on the CPU). Most drives have 2-8MB of cache on them, and most CPUs have 1-4MB. More is (usually) better. RAM (speed of the FSB, or Front Side Bus and amount of memory free matter, since that's where data is actually copied to/from when doing a file transfer.) spindle speed - this is for all hard drives, even external, and is rated in RPMs (just like cars) - a 4000RPM drive is slower then a 5400RPM, 7200RPM, or 15000RPM drive. fragmentation of the file(s) - You're on a Mac, so this isn't as bad as it could be. (Hooray for defrag-on-the-fly OSX) Basically, if the file(s) you're copying is scattered all over the platter, then the needle has to jump around a lot to get it. This is also one reason why copying a single 500MB file is faster then copying 5 100MB files. bus speed of the controller - Here's something people often forget when adding a SATA or SCSI card to a machine - you're also limited by the bus speed of the card. For example, PCI cards cap out at 133MBps. (hence the invention of PCI-64 and PCI-X). Note that the speeds listed here are MBps, not Mbps. Firewire is rated at 400Mbps, which is roughly 50MBps. There are 8 bits in a byte. "MB" means Megabyte while "Mb" means Megabit. (Fun Fact: 4 bits, or "half a byte", is called a nibble. We IT guys can be funny too, you know) "Firewire2" aka "Firewire800" pushes in at 800Mbps. So anything internal is going to blow Firewire away, assuming it's reasonably new (I haven't seen ATA33 in about 8 years. Most G4s, for example, had ATA100) and you've got a decent cache, RAM, and spindle- speed. This is where laptop drives tend to be slower, they're usually 5400RPM while desktops are usually 7200RPM and servers are 10k or 15k RPM drives. This is all talking about hard drives - if your statement "data disc" means something like CD or DVD discs, then your #1 speed killer is the optical drive it's self. Spinning the disc and reading it with a laser is slow. In that case, how the drive is connected (Firewire, SATA, ATA, etc) is irrelevant - the bottleneck is with the disc reader. Which is why brand-new top-of-the-line Mac Pros and PCs, while using SATA for their hard drives, still use ATA100 for their CD/ DVD drives. There's no point making the bus speed faster, since they can't even use the full pipe available in ATA100. Your question is difficult to answer because you are only asking about 1 specific part (the point-to-point transfer mechanism, in this case FireWire) where the reality is much more complex. In any chain of devices, internally or externally, transfer rates will be affected by many parts of the chain -- most often the slowest part of the chain. Each link operates at different throughput capacities. Some of the variables: hard disk spin rate. hard disk data cache size hard disk controller card data bus (internal or external) speed other load on the system affecting bus availability. Put a slow device on a fast chain and you will get slow results. Likewise, put a fast device on a slow chain and you will get slow results. All other things being equal, a FireWire 400 connect (and bridge) is about the same throughput as a ATA-166 or an SATA connection. I purchased my G4 Aug 2004 at the Shadyside Apple store. My first Apple power adapter failed (sparked and scorched) in 2005, and this week, my second apple adapter failed (quietly and peacefully.) I purchased a non-Apple brand adapter earlier this week, and it worked for two days before refusing to power the computer today. The transformer still works, but shuts off when I plug the cord to the computer into it. I've tried all the things from the Apple support pages, so I'm pretty much stuck as to a cause for these failures. I'm not a forceful gal or anything and I'm careful with my equipment. I use my laptop probably 10-12 hours a day and shut it down at night; it travels with me very rarely. Other than the power issues, it works beautifully (maybe a bit slow because I have way too many graphics and photo files on the hard drive, but that's my fault.) I'm running system 10.4.7. My computer is still on Apple care warranty, but the last time I talked with someone at the Apple store about the adapter (while I was purchasing a CS2 upgrade), I felt a little dismissed by the salesperson. I never pushed the issue, so now I have two failed Apple adapters and a nearly new failed non- Apple brand adapter making lovely paperweights. I've been working on Macs for many years, and I'm at my wits end about this. What is going on here? Am I doing something wrong, is there an issue with these G4s, or is it just my "supercharged" personality? I love my laptop, but this is enough to make me give up and work exclusively on my desktop! Message-ID: <45148238.6070307@nauticom.net> Grace's Vermont Apple Pie CRUST: 2 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons very cold butter grated rind 1/2 lemon 2 eggs 2 tablespoons ice water Place the flour, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl. Cut the butter into small bits and add to flour mixture. Using your fingers, cut in the butter until it has the texture of coarse cornmeal. Add the lemon rind. Separate the eggs and set the whites aside. Beat the yolks with the water and add to the mixture, stirring quickly with a fork. Gather the dough into a ball and place in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling. FILLING: 8 - 12 McIntosh Apples 1 tablespoon butter 1/2 cut brown sugar 1 tablespoon flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon Take one quarter of the dough and put it back in the refrigerator. The remaining piece will be the bottom crust. Roll out the crust between two pieces of wax paper. The crust should be as round as possible and should fit into the pie plate with the edges hanging over. Carefully peel the wax paper off one side and lightly lay the paper back on. Flip the dough over and carefully peel the wax paper off this side. Place in the pie plate and carefully peel off the remaining paper. Fit the dough into the plate and cut off any extra from the edges. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Pare the apples and cut them into thick slices. One apple should yield only about 8 - 10 slices. Place the sliced apples into the crust. Dot the top with the butter. Sprinkle the brown sugar, flower and cinnamon over the top. Set aside. Roll out the remaining dough between two new pieces of wax paper. Make this piece as square as possible. Peel the paper off s with the bottom crust. USe a fork to flatten the edges. Brush the top of the pie with the leftover egg white and sprinkle lightly with some sugar. Place in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes. Watch the pie for the last five minute. It may need a little more or less time. depending on your oven. When it is evenly browned, remove and cool before slicing. Strictly McIntosh, strictly the best! Shostakovich was one of the great composers of the 20th century, but he was born and lived his entire life in Soviet Russia, where he was denounced twice by the government, and lived in fear of being jailed, or worse. While he was enormously popular, at times his music was banned. He was a humanitarian who felt the suffering of his countrymen, but saw the need to outwardly serve his government, even to the point of joining the Communist Party in 1960. He was then not able to leave the party, which caused him immense despair. On the drive to work this morning, I heard an interesting segment about the coded anti-Soviet government meanings possibly hidden in his music. You can listen to this here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6129917&ft=1&f=1008 Do you know what else comes from Soviet Russia? Tetris. According to Wikipedia, Tetris was invented by Alexey Pazhitnov at the Soviet Academy of Sciences at their Computer Center in Moscow. Now, like the political messages possibly hidden in Shostakovich?s music, Tetris is hidden in OS X?s UNIX subsystem. You can unveil and play Tetris by browsing Applications Folder > Utilities Folder > Terminal. Type ?emacs? and click enter. Now simultaneously press the ?ESC? and ?X? keys. Now type ?Tetris? without the quotations. Use the arrow keys to rotate and move the falling Tetris blocks. Press the spacebar to make the blocks fall. A whole bunch of games are hidden in emacs in your Macs terminal. To see the rest of the games, open the Terminal application, and type: ?ls /usr/share/emacs/21.2/lisp/play? again, without the quotations. To play these games, repeat the steps above for launching Tetris, except substitute the other game?s name for Tetris. To quit emacs, simultaneously hold down the control and X keys, and then simultaneously hold down the control and C keys. As always, be careful when you are using the Terminal application! +---------------------------------------------------------+ From jkownacki at gmail.com Wed Sep 27 17:36:18 2006 From: jkownacki at gmail.com (Justin Kownacki) Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2006 19:36:18 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] PodCamp Pittsburgh Message-ID: <963c10d60609271636g36a53ec3n3a00d6e6461f21f8@mail.gmail.com> Hey folks; Hi, my name is Justin Kownacki and I produce a web sitcom called Something to be Desired. Lots of ideas exchanged, contacts made and partnerships formed. Plus, the event was cited online thousands of times, increasing the exposure of everyone involved. Now the spirit of PodCamp is branching out and we here at STBD have just announced we'll be hosting the first PodCamp Pittsburgh in November. Details are still in the works. As passionate Apple users (and podcasting advocates), we wanted to bring the event to your attention well in advance. It was actually Jef Raskin ? which I knew, but somehow I let the spelling error slip through. As many of you know (and pointed out, which I appreciate), Jef Raskin did much more than name the Macintosh. He envisioned the concept of extremely easy-to-use "Computers by the Millions." He was able to apply years of memos, research, and software development at Apple, where he started the Macintosh project in 1979. He is often regarded as the "Father of the Macintosh," and he billed himself as the "Creator of the Macintosh." He was Apple's 31st employee. As is typical of Apple's early history, there are many different stories about who contributed what to the first Mac. Some say Steve Jobs brought the GUI (graphical user interface) to the Mac from Xerox; some say Raskin's work predated even Xerox's early attempts at a computer GUI. Raskin strongly wanted the Mac to use a one-button mouse, which he later thought should be labeled three-button mouse. If you want to read more about this subject, visit Folklore.org. It's all about the development of the original Macintosh, and it's truly fascinating reading: Personality clashes (especially with Steve Jobs, who tried to cancel the Macintosh project three times) and various other problems forced Raskin out of the Macintosh project in 1981, although he continued to make important contributions to the machine's design. Raskin left Apple in 1982 and formed Information Appliance, Inc. He wrote an important book, The Humane Interface, which further developed his ideas about human-computer interfaces. In 2000, he was working on a new computer interface based on his three decades of research. This was originally called The Humane Environment, or THE. On January 1, 2005, it was renamed Archy. He was also designing a new curriculum on humane interfaces and computer enterprises at the University of Chicago's Computer Science Department. Jef Raskin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2004 and died on February 26, 2005, at age 61. His son Aza Raskin continues his work at a company called Humanized. Read about this here: http://www.humanized.com/ Raskin was a leader in the humane computing movement. He made contributions to computing that are with us today, will be with us for many years to come, and will always serve as inspiration for future human-computer interfaces. Having collected free iTunes music for a couple years now, I've amassed almost fifty songs that I've made part of my permanent collection. I have a friend who works for the iTMS. Turns out, according to him, that every week there's a meeting where the staff battles over what song gets offered free (the best song wins...). So, every week I give the new free song a try. Of course, some of the stuff I reject right away. Everything else gets a chance to grow on me. What the heck, if I don't like it I can also delete it. Thank you, James, for giving me the opportunity to "tell the world" about free iTunes music!
