Most programmers, when designing icons, go with "what looks cool" but Apple likes to think farther then that, and has some nice guidelines on the proper design of icons to help improve the user's experience. Ideally, you should be able, simply by looking at an icon, know what that icon represents (application, utility, file, etc) Another reason OSX is easier to use then other OSes. From the Desk of David Pogue: Tiny Gadgets, Tiny Electronics Show ================================================= This past weekend, I attended a wonderful little event at a science museum/planetarium (http://discoverymuseum.org/) in Bridgeport, Conn. The museum's incredibly important mission: to re-ignite children's interest in science. (If you hadn't heard, the number of people entering the sciences in this country is dwindling, and there's concern that we'll lose our scientific edge if we don't turn this trend around.) For the second year, I volunteered to host a tech fair at this museum: a little, tiny, one-building consumer- electronics show. About 15 companies were on site to show their latest stuff: Panasonic, TiVo, XM Satellite Radio, Sonos, JVC, Olympus, Pentax, Nuance, Lego, and so on. I took a few notes on products I discovered at the tech fair. Thought I'd pass them along. * Canon has a full array of cameras, camcorders and printers on display. But the one that blew me away was a new slim, shirt-pocket model called the SD800 IS. (The IS stands for image-stabilized, meaning fewer blurry shots.) I decided to try a couple of sample shots. I aimed at two people across the booth from me--and each person's face was outlined with a white square. Incredibly, the white squares MOVED on the screen as the people did--this camera was actually tracking their faces! (Canon says that it can track up to nine faces in a single scene.) The main idea behind this face-recognition software is exposure calculations: If you're taking photos of people (hey--it could happen), you want the faces to be properly exposed, no matter how light or dark the surroundings. This feature works particularly well with the flash. I took a flash photo of a guy about three feet away--a setup that, on most cameras, would bleach his face to nuclear white. But on the 800, the flash throttled itself back so much, you could barely tell that it was on. His face was perfectly exposed. The face-recognition feature is offered by the new Digic 3 chip, which Canon will be rolling out across its camera line. The other advantage of this processor: it's fast. So fast, in fact, that the 800 offers the least shutter lag of any compact camera I've tested. I tried pointing it at something and suddenly mashing the shutter button without prefocusing. Boom--the picture was snapped, sharply in focus (as long as no flash was involved). This is big news. * Bose had a hilarious demonstration its new Companion 5 surround-sound speaker system for Macs and PC's. First, a rep sat you down in front of a computer equipped with this system and explained that the two tiny speakers on the desk (plus a subwoofer on the floor) can simulate surround just as well as Bose's expensive five-speaker system. She says that she'll start out playing a song through the expensive system, and then switch to the Companion 5 halfway through. So you sit there, immersed in rich, sparkling sound, with the surround so distinct, you can turn your body and point to the sources of the rear speakers. But the joke's on you: she then reveals that the "five- speaker system" isn't even plugged in. You've been listening to the simulated, two-speaker system the whole time. It's an uncanny effect--and a very clever demo. * Plantronics had an extremely tiny Bluetooth wireless headset (for your cellphone or whatever) called the Discovery 655. "Headset" isn't quite the term, actually, since this tiny thing fits into (not over) your ear and barely extends past your earlobe. My favorite part: when you're not using it, you can take it off so you don't look like a cyborg. Then, when a call comes in, the *headset* vibrates in your pocket so you can put it on and take the call. * Apple's rep gave a little talk that focused on iPod accessories. One of them looked like a pair of skinny wraparound sunglasses (http://www.myvu.com) that displays your video iPod's TV shows and movies on a virtual big screen that floats in the center of your vision. What's cool is that you can still see--by looking around the TV set on either side. Hard to explain, but really neat. Another accessory is a Belkin snap-on microphone for the iPod. I own the previous edition, and it records extremely low, phone call-quality audio; I assumed that the crummy quality was to ensure that people don't make, for example, illegal high-quality recordings of rock concerts. The new version doesn't have that problem. It records CD- quality music, and even has an input so you can use an even nicer microphone, if you want. A regional tech fair like this, if you think about it, is a really unusual setup. It gives both the companies and the show's attendees something they virtually never get in the real world: the ability to meet and speak to each other. Where else could you walk right up to the product manager of, say, the TiVo Series 3--not a salesperson--and ask all the questions you want? (Not even the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas permits that sort of interaction--it's off limits to the public.) I think there's something to this. There ought to be more little mini tech fairs, or maybe even a traveling road show; it's amazing how much you can learn. ----- This week's Pogue's Posts blog: http://www.nytimes.com/technology/poguesposts/index.html?8cir&emc=cir ----- Visit David Pogue on the Web at: http://www.davidpogue.com 2. BAD DOG! it is both non-standard and highly insecure. 2) they may be using MS extensions to HTML or CSS -- very BAD DOG! In other words they only test and develop with MS IE. This is exactly why there is the WC3 standardization committee and the web "acid" tests. 3) they may be using ActiveX Controls which only run on Windows -- again BAD DOG as these are a security risk, where Java, JavaScript, Pearl, PHP, Python, or Ruby would do much better. The main issues for them are a) lost business... if you can't view their site who are they talking to? b) security... most if not all of the MS extensions and proprietary stuff (activeX) have proven to be security risks. On that basis alone I would boycott their site. The case of security is everyone's business, since a website you visit may not immediately affect your machine but it may affect the entire network of machines at your organization. Allow me to explain, briefly, the Catch-22 we're under: 1) There are web standards, administered by the W3C, that everyone is supposed to follow in making websites and browsers. 2) Microsoft does not care about that. Therefore: Microsoft's browser, IE, does not work well with W3C stuff all the time. So professional web developers, when writing websites, have to code them for both W3C standards *and* for IE. Adhering to the standards for 10% of the browsers out there (Firefox, Safari, Camino, Opera, etc) and extra work to have it run smoothly in IE (the other 90% of the browser market) - which is a lot of work. For semi- professional or lazy developers, It's a lot easier to write for the "big boy" of IE and blow off W3C and the rest of us. Microsoft's web server software (IIS) and web-creation tools (Frontpage, ASP, .NET, ActiveX, etc) are all designed for IE viewing, not W3C viewing. So many "built or run on Microsoft" websites only work with IE.. they ignore the standards or require Windows-only code to work. Even the upcoming Longhorn IIS and IE7 follow this trend. The only good news on the horizon is the marginalization of ActiveX - extremely powerful code that allows websites to run code on the local machine. This is used (for example) by Microsoft for Windows Update, and by a TON of other websites. Unfortunately, ActiveX is a huge security weakness, and so it's becoming less popular. IE7 will be defaulted to turning it off. So often there are websites built on Microsoft technologies that will never be easily made Mac-compatible. This is by design. Makes you wish the DOJ was more like the EU in spanking Microsoft for monopolistic practices. Thanks to Microsoft's dominance on the desktop, websites have to adhere to Microsoft more then they adhere to the W3C standards. On the other hand, some websites are easily made Mac-compatible. This is, most often, caused by a little feature called "User Agents" Here's the logic: - Newer websites use newer HTML code, or things like CSS, Java, etc. These require newer browsers. In the older days, there was no way to know what people were using to connect to a site, so web coders had to either try and make everything compatible or place little banners at the top/bottom that said things like "Best viewed in 800x600 with Internet Explorer 4, Netscape 4.x, or later" - or even the popular "Get Netscape" or "Get IE" buttons. -Then Browser User Agents were developed. These would allow the browser to identify itself to the website - basically saying "Hi! I'm Safari 3.0" or "Hi! I'm IE6 on Windows" or whatever. These were so the website creator could redirect or taylor the site for the browser, but is most commonly used for two things: 1) Tracking what people who visit your site use. "We've seen a increase of Firefox usage lately, it's now 35% of our users" 2) Ensuring the browser being used will work with the site's features. #2 is what kills us.. some website users are lazy, and will code their sites to check the User Agent and basically follow the logic: IF browser = IE6 or later IF browser = netscape 7 or later THEN Go to main site ELSE Go to page saying the browser is not compatible, and you need to install Netscape or IE. Why this sucks for us is obvious - the "check" has nothing to do with "Does your browser support the features on the site, such as CSS, Java, or Flash?" but simply "Are you running a particular browser?" So often a site which Safari or Firefox can run fine is in- accessible, since those browsers don't pass the check. If only you could sneak past the User Agent check, you'd be fine. This is why I love Safari's DeBug menu, which lets you "lie" about what you're running - To enable the Debug menu, make sure Safari is quit and run the following in Terminal: defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1 Once it's active, in Safari you'll see the DeBug menu.. which has an option to change what User Agent you report to a website. ? There have been several sites I've visited in Safari to be told "your browser is incompatible" only to discover, if I report myself as "Windows MSIE 6.0" it works fine. Whenever that occurs, I always tell the webmaster about it and point out that they need to change the User Agent check. I guess the best thing to say to a developer is "Please follow the W3C standards" :) On Oct 13, 2006, at 1:15 PM, Wells, Bruce wrote: > Greetings all: > > I have encountered the issue described below which in my mind > amounts to Mac marginalization. How? A) HOTEL RESERVATIONS We're trying to work out a deal with a local hotel chain, but they need to know an estimated number of rooms to be rented in order to let us know what the discount might be. If you need a room for the weekend (Fri the 10th and Sat the 11th -- and let us know if you'd need Sun the 12th as well), drop me a line and I can add you to our list of Prospective Hotel Guests, which we'll submit to the hotels we're in discussions with. (This doesn't mean we're booking your room, but it does mean we might get a good price when you book it afterwards.) WE NEED THIS INFO BY FRIDAY! B) DONATIONS We also have an official PodCamp Pittsburgh Donations page set up at http://www.podcamppittsburgh.com/pcpghdonations.htm where anyone can make a secure donation (in any amount) via PayPal. That page also lists the expenses toward which your donations will be used. All donors will be thanked publicly on-site and in press materials available at the event. Every little bit helps! C) SPONSORSHIPS If you or your company would like to sponsor the event (for $1000 or more), email for more information. Sponsorship perks will include: - Public thanks, both on-site and in press materials at the event - Table space in our sponsors area, where you can make a (small) amount of swag and info available to attendees - Logo inclusion in signage at the event - Name-brand exposure to hundreds of media creators, plus their entire online audiences More info to be announced as it happens -- bookmark http:// www.podcamppittsburgh.com today! He?s a volunteer who works with others to refurbish Apple Computers through the Center for Hope at Fellowship UMC in Ambridge. Right now he has over a hundred recycled computers ?ready to go? to a new home. Each computer is six to 10 years old, equipped with basic software and available for $25. He is offering them to churches on a first come, first serve basis. They are also available to individuals who cannot afford a new computer but would like an introduction to using one. Sevick calls the program the Computer Technology Seeding Project. Already, 420 computers have been distributed. ?We?re running out of space to work on any more, we have a mountain of them, up to the ceiling,? he said. Sevick and other project volunteers hope the computers become ?seeds? that grow and flower into a desire to learn more. With this program, families are introduced to all that the Center for Hope has to offer, in some cases planting other seeds of hope and faith. ?It?s a great outreach and draws people into church. It?s planting seeds,? Sevick said. Cooky Larrick, a Center for Hope prayer supporter, said the program has been a blessing to many children, enabling them to do homework. The computers have in some cases brought families together as they learn the technology together, she said. Free group training will be offered to new computer owners at the Center. On-site service is also provided at 50 percent off by Sevick, who has a computer business, David Sevick Consulting. Sevick said the computers would work well in offices or for classroom use. They are ready for a network or the Internet. Each PC comes with Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel. Preschool and elementary education software programs are also included. If the hardware should fail in the first six months, it will be replaced with an equivalent machine. The computers and software were donated by school districts, universities and businesses. Word of the Seed Project made the editorial pages of the New York Times in February when Apple employee David Pogue wrote a letter to the editor commending the CFH and Sevick. ?They take people?s old junker computers, clean them up and give them to Pittsburgh?s neediest citizens,? he wrote. There are now four rooms dedicated to free computer education at the Center for Hope, Sevick said. Contact Sevick by email at dave at davesevick.com or by phone at 724-779-0099. You've gotta read this out LOUD!!!!! Why Computers Sometimes Crash! by Dr. Seuss (Even if you've seen it before, it's still funny!) If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report. If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash, then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash! If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall...... And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang. When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk, and the macro code instructions is causing unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM, and then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom! W ell, that certainly clears things up for me. How about you? Thank you, Bill Gates, for bringing all this into our lives. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Bear with me here ...... I'm thinking about these issues tonight: The upcoming mid-term elections ... the opinions of all political parties and how strongly they can be advertised on all media. The wealth of satire and humor at all levels .... some adult oriented, some pure techie oriented, some good for all public use. The faith backgrounds of many people we serve on this list .... as well as those whom faith is not important. The wide range of technical levels among us all .... some high level engineers, some brand new to computers, some just children looking at their parents machines. The best way to allow us to express openly our Apple related thoughts, opinions, humor ..... or anything ...... may need to come under some litmus test, some scrutiny, some level of evaluation ....... and this can be done by everyone. To this end you need to simply post references to sites that might have a topic that MIGHT be construed as not acceptable. Versus a direct posting of a questionable thought, item, image, story, etc ..... remembering you now reach 380+ people with some amazing immediacy. I think we have already been doing this informally .... but now I'm going to enforce this as listserve policy. Let me use my recent posting of the Something To Be Desired internet sit-com site as a perfect example. Justin's production of the short movies at local bars is really innovative and edgy and provocative. I think he is on his way to being really famous some day soon ... and in fact he already is famous in the Podcasting circles nationally. He is a local Pittsburgher about to hit the big time. However, I knew his STBD site was not suitable for everyone due to some adult content .... so I posted a bit of a warning before showing the link to the STBD site. I really felt his work should be known to the Apple public via this listserve forum. I was also extremely pleased he presented his works to the Cranberry and Monroeville groups. Our intentions and guidance to readers should be very deliberate to keep our primary postings clean ..... and REDIRECTIONS to other sites very clear as to what you will be seeing on your next click. ------------ Having said this, I'm hoping this achieves the open conversation and freedom of speech I seek to keep in this forum ..... yet provides a protection from the SHOCK one reader so succinctly stated was a vulnerability in me, the listserve moderator, not reading each posting before it is posted. I don't have time for that :-) So, I am hoping we can all be very clear to our public viewers just exactly what they'll be getting when you redirect them with a link to another site. Remembering that age, faith, skill-level and family beliefs all play a major role in what is OK and NOT OK for this listserve. Thanks for listening to me for a moment .... and feel free to continue to express your Apple related thoughts here .... within these more defined boundaries set forth tonight. :-) Dave Sevick Listserve Moderator Apple User Group Ambassador Apple Consultant Married Father of Three Girls Blessed To Be A Blessing Thankful For Every Day Always Looking At The Bigger Picture Trying to Misunderstand A Little Less Completely -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... One of the new features in Firefox 2 is the ability to undo the closing of a tab. If you accidentally close a tab, you can control- click on the tab bar and choose "Undo Close Tab" to open the most recently closed tab. It worked well for me even if I'm not the biggest fan of Mac OS X (if it would print bitmapped fonts and run MacDraw II natively then I'd like it more perhaps). Anyway, around the beginning of September **right after my AppleCare warranty expired** the screen started to get uneven in terms of brightness. The right side is a little brighter and it's bothering me. Also, I hate the hard drive in the machine. Is it normal for it to spin endlessly when opening Safari and also to get hotter than the battery? Finally, there's the battery. It only gets 15 minutes per charge and I'm not hard on my batteries. It suddenly lost all of its capacity over the past few weeks and no, I didn't leave it unplugged from the wall forever. My old G3 iBook (clamshell) went five years before the battery blew, and it was still getting 4 hour charges as late as August 2005! (I currently use it off an adaptor) My question is this--how much would it be to fix these problems? I'm very disappointed with this machine, so much that I may never buy another Apple laptop and just keep my old G3 clamshell (with OS 9) going by finding a new battery for it. I'm thinking I may need a new screen? I've used Apple stuff since 1989 and have never been disappointed in something before until now. Sure, everything had its quirks (like the Plus overheats and the IIsi has its sound issues) but this iBook has really brought down Apple in my book. Hopefully there are ways to fix this screen/battery/hard drive (and no, buying a new laptop isn't an option!) From the Desk of David Pogue: Mac Surgery ================================================= Today, for your entertainment (and my nostalgia) pleasure, another installment of the "articles Pogue wrote in 1989 for his local Mac user-group newsletter, which he recently found on an old Zip disk and thought you might find amusing" files.... This one is called "Mac Surgery." Really takes me back--to a time I'm not sure I want to remember. ------- It began, oddly enough, with software. Powerful, massive, hard-drive hungry software. A program so vast and so potent it is shipped on four floppies, to which a single meg of memory is like a pebble on its mighty shore. A masterpiece of programming which, with its brute and awesome number- crunching demands, runs on my Mac SE about as fast as a 42nd Street crosstown bus at 5:15 pm. My choice was clear: get an accelerator card or go to law school. The literature for the Orion accelerator card spoke glowingly of an inexpensive card that you pop into your machine, and voila: "calculation-dependent software like music and CAD/CAM applications run up to 100 times faster!" Sounded pretty good. I ordered one. $860 for the whole shebang. Confident, smiling, I unplugged my computer. I laid it on a Spider-Man towel, screen down. Feeling like James T. Kirk, exploring new dimensions, I unscrewed the Mac's four case screws. Piece o'cake--a child could open this computer. I lifted off the case, admiring the famed signatures of the Mac's creators inscribed on the inside--a sight, I realized with a glow of pride, that only the true power-user cognoscienti would ever get to see. I turned back to the patient and looked at the innards. Immediately I abandoned all hope. The Mac was a mess. There were wires and components and circuits and all kinds of stuff. Reluctantly, I opened the manual for the first time. "1. WARNING: Installation procedure is intended for Authorized service technicians. All other attempts to install Orion Boards are discouraged by the manufacturer, who is not responsible for the consequences. You must work in an environment that is static free. Always wear goggles. Remove rings and wristwatches before performing installation. Never touch the Anode--it carries high voltage from the side of the picture tube. These precautions will reduce the possibility of injury but will not eliminate them." Consequences!? Injury!? Goggles?! What was it gonna do, squirt ink at me? For a fleeting moment, my mental picture of Ultra Mac began to waver around the edges, like David Letterman going into a flashback while answering Viewer Mail. The specter of the Anode haunted me, too. I could just see the Post. "KOMPU KID FRIED IN MAC ATTACK." But nay! I thrust my shoulders back and gripped the screwdriver. I can DO this. Knowingly, I took my watch off. I took my socks off, too--you never know about static. "2. You will notice three connectors to the motherboard. Unplug these connectors from the motherboard (the one from the power board may take a little persuasion)." Persuasion? Perspiring already, I inspected the motherboard. This, then, was the Brain. But there were five main connectors, not three. Or maybe only four were connectors, and the other was- -the Anode. I wiped the thought from my mind. The first four came off with no problem--like taking diodes from a baby. The fifth required a little persuasion. "PLEASE! PLEEEEEASE come off!" I cried as I tried to wrest it free with sweating fingers. No dice. It occurred to me that a different, more New York kind of persuasion might be the ticket. Glowering threateningly, I slowly lowered the tip of a putty knife to the plastic terminus. I slipped it underneath like a lever and persuasioned that little sucker right out of its socket with an unnerving ripping sound. Right out of any future functionality, too, no doubt. "3. Locate and remove Apple's ROM chips, labeled ROM HI and ROM LO. Perform this removal carefully." In my mind, I heard Leonard Nimoy narrating. "The slightest slip will send the patient into an irreversible paraelectronic stupor. Pogue must remove the chips leg by leg, taking care not to bend a single one. As the night wears on, the surgeon faces his greatest challenge." At last the chips were free. Handling them like radioactive isotopes, I lifted them with the tip of the screwdriver and set them gently down on the bottom of a Rubbermaid Freez-N- Serv sandwich box. And so it went, organ by internal organ. Finally, an hour later, I arrived at the last page of the manual. It was called "Finishing Up." It read, in its entirety: "7. While holding the motherboard close to the bottom of the computer, position it with the bottom side in the track. Now comes the key step: Take a screwdriver and insert blade into the notch between the frame and" That's no typo. "Between the frame and" That was the end of the manual. The last word on the page. That's all she wrote. Assuming, of course, that the manual writer--who quit typing in the middle of the most crucial sentence in the entire manual in order, I'm guessing, to catch the eye of that cute guy with the Sony Watchman over in Shipping--was a female. Standing foolishly, screwdriver in hand, the fruit of the salaries of ten summers of camp counseloring strewn like so much "Star Wars III: Return of the Jedi" Prop Dept. refuse across my desk, bed and floor, I fleetingly considered some of the actually quite attractive qualities of today's top management-training programs. In a last futile gesture, I even tried to follow the instruction. I actually put the screwdriver between the frame and But it was no use. I chucked the screwdriver and slipped the motherboard back into its original position, praying fervently. I reconnected the cables--the ones I knew about, anyway--and, somehow knowing it was futile, turned on the Mac. The sweet sound of success--bing!--and there, I saw, with a welling glow of satisfaction, the contented smiling startup icon of a well-adjusted computer. I choked. I sobbed. All was not lost! And soon--miracle!--there was the Desktop, all my little icons yawning, stretching, blinking in the morning sun, completely unaware of how close they had come to electronic death. And what speed! I launched my favorite quick-as-a-turtle graphics program. Zooomm! I tried a music program. Zippp! I was almost alarmed. Now, exhausted and shaking very slightly, I replaced the Mac cover and put back the screws that hold it in place: one, two, three--uh-oh! After all this, I couldn't find the fourth screw anywhere. I looked in the sandwich box. On the floor, on the desk, in my pockets. I felt like a surgeon who, upon sewing up the patient, suddenly says: "Now, what did I do with those sponges?" I cleaned up rampantly. I put the tools away, threw away (violently) the installation manual, swept the floor. The little screw was defiantly hiding. At last, as I brushed the circuitry crumbs from the towel, my thumb ran over what I thought at first was just a little Spider-Man eye dirt. Yes, there it was, nestled deep in the terry at the corner of Spidey's left eyehole: the fourth screw. Today the patient is healthier than ever before. It has cut down on meats and sugars, increased its leafy vegetable intake, and begun to exercise regularly. With a careful eye on its blood pressure and weight, there's no reason the Mac shouldn't continue a productive and happy existence right up to the onset of obsolescence--which could be as long as another eighteen to twenty months. ----- This week's Pogue's Posts blog: http://www.nytimes.com/technology/poguesposts/index.html?8cir&emc=cir ----- Visit David Pogue on the Web at: http://www.davidpogue.com From dave at davesevick.com Fri Oct 27 05:57:51 2006 From: dave at davesevick.com (Dave Sevick) Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 07:57:51 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] The November 2 COWMUG meeting ( in Monroeville ) will be held at CompUSA Message-ID: <9CFB8413-EE6A-4840-BD97-52A26108D85D@davesevick.com> The November 2 COWMUG meeting will be held at CompUSA, located at 3480 William Penn Highway (Business Route 22) in Wilkins Township, from 7 to 8:45 pm. I find the freeware version works very well. I hope this helps. Thomas Fri, 27 Oct 2006 13:23:48 -0400 >I'm looking for some help. > >I am currently running 10.4.8 on an iBook G4. The article goes on to point out Butler Memorial's expansion into the brand new Rose E. I have had the privilege of working professionally side by side with Joe and can attest to his dedication to customer support within his growing Butler area health care system. It does not surprise me that he would focus on the Apple retail experience, that we all know and appreciate, as a model for health care. Many thanks Joseph A.
