All 18 computers are ready, we just need to attach inventory tags, attach a monitor and make sure it works, and pack them in boxes. We are also looking for empty boxes to ship our larger monitors; the boxes we currently have aren't big enough. If you just like plugging things in and booting them up, this Saturday is for you. We also have other tasks, and I'm sure John Hamill would welcome company at his printer testing work station. Please give me an idea if you can attend. Lockups on a Mac typically occur when bad memory is involved. Also, some users perceive a lock-up differently, and mistake a machine that just might be taking it's sweet time for a lockup. Finally, you've got to look at the applications that are running concurrent with the lock-up. Running too much? Running a mis-installed program? It's tough to say as a general diagnosis, but, from my experience, things have been pretty stable since Panther. The only things that happen occasionally will be an application crash. I usually know what I've done to inspire that happening, and that kind-of goes with what I mentioned about concurrent apps. I'm still running off of a G3 iBook when I travel, and, while it's slower than the G5 on my desk, it's every bit as reliable. And, believe me, I USE my machines. But, that's one user's experience. - Dave On May 3, 2006, at 2:31 PM, Al Houston wrote: > Love the new commercials comparing Mac to PC, but the restart > commercial puzzles me, as my experience with a G4 tower running > Panther, I-Mac running Jaguar, &2 Powerbooks that ran Panther & > Jaguar before, & the current Powerbook running Tiger is that the > systems will totally lock up on a bi-weekly basis. I'm lucky enough to live with Callahan, so I have access to all manner of legal MS software. (She's a Microsoft Partner, has access to MCT Action Pack, and is even an OEM) But for regular people, it's a bit tricky. Officially, OEM licenses can ONLY be purchased pre-installed/bundled with a new computer. That's what OEM means. "Original Equipment Manufacturer" (ie: Dell) Basically, an OEM license is ONLY allowed to be installed on the computer it was purchased with - you're not even allowed to transfer it from an "old" computer to a new one. For example: I have a legal OEM copy of XP on ComputerA, I plan on transferring the copy of XP to ComputerB and destroying ComputerA, never using it again. Since I purchased One legal copy of XP, and I'm still only using that One copy (since ComputerA is no longer used) - then it should be legal, right? Wrong. This is illegal. The OEM copy of Windows XP needs to be thrown away with ComputerA and a new copy needs to be purchased with ComputerB. So even Jeff's example of "If you already had XP" is no good. Also, for the record, any VM (virtual machine) is considered a seperate computer. So if you wanted to run Boot Camp (and install WinXP on your new Mini) and also wanted to try Parallel's VM solution (where XP runs along side OSX) then you'd need TWO licenses. If you, like Callahan, have 5 Windows VMs running on your laptop, then you need 5 licenses. (see: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/partners/YourPC_do.mspx) Now - here's where it gets weird. According to Microsoft, there is one case where you can buy an OEM license for an existing machine. You can purchase OEM Windows XP with "non peripheral hardware from a Microsoft Systems Builder" - that is, if you buy a bit of hardware that goes inside the case from an official MS OEM, you can buy an OEM license with it. (video card, hard drive, network card - all ok. Mouse, scanner, printer, etc. - not ok) This is why a lot of OEM websites (like Tiger Direct or NewEgg) toss a $0.01 screw into the box when they sell you an OEM copy of Windows. That screw is the "non-peripheral hardware". That's how they "game" the system. See: http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/5/b/35b409f2-ff35-4a97-9439- fe8230421168/MythAndFactAboutMSOSLicensing.pdf Even then, the OEM copy you purchased with that one cent screw is still OEM - you can't move it to another machine. Now, none of this applies with the Retail License (a copy of windows in a shrink-wrapped box at CompUSA) or Volume Licenses. Those have completely different rules. (Just as complicated, if not more so) As do MSDN, ActionPack, Partner/NFR, and other license types. This is just Windows XP, imagine trying to license a network of servers running Exchange, SQL, etc. And think about they upcoming joys of Vista, with all it's different versions. Microsoft's licensing is so confusing that even Microsoft isn't sure what all the rules are. There have been many times I've called them with a question, gotten an answer, called back with the same question, and gotten a completely different answer. Answers like "Yes, that's legal. You should have no problems" and "No, that's illegal. You need to purchase XXXX instead" to the same question. Before you ask "Why is it so confusing?" - the answer is simple. A large number of companies over-pay Microsoft for licenses under a "better safe then sorry" policy. After all, isn't it better to err on the side of caution and have too many licenses then go to jail? As for buying OEM licenses from a vendor for your Intel-mac - keep an eye out for that "non peripheral hardware" screw and understand that you're complying with the license rules, but not with the intent. While you're just one customer in a vast horde, and MS is more likely to attack the vendor then you, they can also make your life hell if they decide to ban an OEM range of licenses due to illegal sales or "piracy" - since Windows activates by phoning home, it is possible your copy will suddenly be illegal, and you'll stop getting updates/ patches until you call them and pay to "obtain genuine Microsoft software" Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go back to my OSX Server with it's Unlimited license - who's rules are: "Buy this license and you can use it on one server to do anything you like. Unlimited access to everything - web, email, file, etc." :) Charles On May 4, 2006, at 1:08 PM, Jeff Szuhay wrote: > Why on God's green earth, would you want to install and > run XP when you have OS X, unless you absolutely had to? > > If you already had XP, then I can see it. Apple case Message-ID: http://playlistmag.com/news/2006/05/08/apple/index.php Apple Computer wins in Apple v. Apple case By Karen Haslam, Macworld UK and Jonny Evans, Macworld UK Apple Computer Inc. has prevailed in its case regarding logo use in iTunes against Apple Corps. High court judge Edward Mann delivered his judgment at 10.30 a.m. London time Monday, ruling in favor of Apple Computer. The Beatles? business affairs company, Apple Corps, had accused Apple Computer of breaking a 1991 agreement in its use of the Apple logo in association with what it regards as music-related products, the iPod and iTunes. The British company, still owned by former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with the widow of John Lennon and the estate of George Harrison, wanted to win an injunction to prevent Apple Computer using the apple logo in connection with its iPod and iTunes products. The judge didn?t agree. Mann said that the association between the logo use and the download service is a ?proper one?, and that the logo was clearly used in relation to the service, not to the music. ?The primary reason there is no breach (of the 1991 deal) is because the use of the logo is still a permitted use as described in clause 4.3 of the 1991 agreement,? the judge declared. Apple Computer had defended its use of the logo in association with its music products, as being simply data transmission, which is allowed under clause 4.3 of the 1991 agreement. The judge agreed with the defense, and said that Apple Computer?s use of the logo in association with its products ?does not go beyond what is reasonable and fair.? Lawyers representing Apple Corps have asked the judge to grant them leave to appeal against his decision. Apple Computer meanwhile is demanding at least ?1.5 million in fees from Apple Corps. Apple Corps has now issued a statement, confirming it plans to appeal against the decision. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'd -like- to think that ISPs are "common carriers", providing equitable transport to anyone who shows up with a packet of data to send. (And isn't that what we as their customers are already paying for?) The quote by Ed Whitacre, chairman of AT&T, made me see red. "For a Google or a Yahoo or a Vonage or anybody to expect to use those pipes for free is nuts." 'Scuse me? I bet that Google, Yahoo, etc pay a pretty penny for their end of the nice fat pipes, and we are paying for OUR end, so what does Mr. Whitacre have to complain about? Ohhhh, these content providers are making MONEY on content these days, yes, I suppose Mr. Whitacre might be motivated to TRY to muscle a piece of that action. I've always heard that the internet is designed to route around damage. If you consider non-neutrality to be damage, or at least friction, then I can see the day when some equally smart person figures out how to route around it. From the Apple menu, choose Software Update (make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet). Software Update will assess the Apple software on your computer and check our servers for new versions. If it finds any, the updates will appear in the Software Update window. Select the checkbox for the software you want and then click the Install button to download and install the software. I recommend that you check more frequently than once a month. I have my system preference set to check once a week. 2) Put Your Toys Away You're not 5 years old anymore - make it a point to clear off the mess strewn about across your desktop and put your files away where you can easily find them. This can help prevent accidental file deletion (you may inadvertently select and trash a wanted file with your undesirables) and help you find things much more efficiently. You can get organized by creating new folders (in the Finder, press Shift-Command-N) and arranging them into a workable hierarchy for your files at hand, or you can move your files into existing folders. Boy, you should see Hapy's desktop - he needs to do this. He has an Apple 30-inch Cinema Display and if you look at his desktop it is covered by hundreds of little icons of files that he keeps there! 3) Name Your Children Untitled folder 8, Word027.doc, DSC_1366.jpg, you've probably got a few (or way more than a few) files and folders that you've felt less than inspired to properly name. Then suddenly you need to pluck that prized picture from your ginormous collection of DSC_0001.jpg to DSC_1400.jpg named files, if you only knew which number it was. Go through your generically-named files and folders and give them more descriptive names so you can find what you need fast (though it can find files quickly, Spotlight won't find your tabloid-ready Bigfoot picture if you left the file alone with its cryptic camera-given name). 4) Prune Through Your File Forest To reduce the amount of clutter on your hard drive, free up some disk space by archiving large, seldom used files (learn how here), and be sure to name the resulting archive file appropriately too, so you know what's in it. Delete any unnecessary or outdated personal files whenever possible and anything that you no longer want or need - just drag them all into the Trash and don't forget to empty it. Be brave. Your computer will reward you with improved performance. 5) Repair Disk Permissions It's a good idea to make sure that your disk permissions are in good working order on a regular basisespecially after upgrading or installing new software. Open Disk Utility (find it in /Applications/ Utilities) and select your hard disk icon in the left pane. Click the First Aid tab, then click Repair Disk Permissions to start the process, which can take a few minutes to complete. If Disk Utility finds any issues, it'll fix them along the way. 6) Back up Your Files To prevent losing your prized or important files, make it a point to back up your keepsakes on a regular basis. You can back up files onto a CD, DVD, external hard drive, iPod, iDisk, or other storage medium and then delete the copies on your hard drive to free up some space. To learn how to back up files, choose Mac Help from the Help menu in the Finder and do a search for back up files. To get some ideas of what and what not to back up, see this page. Buy .Mac and use Apple's excellent Backup software that comes free with your .Mac subscription! 7) Restart Your Computer Every Once in a While While your Mac can happily hum along 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you should restart it every once in a while to refresh the system if you're in the habit of keeping your computer running all day and night. This can help clear issues before they arise. 8) Check for Viruses Macs don't get anywhere near the amount of viruses that Windows PCs are prone to, but that doesn't mean that they can't get infected. If you don't already have antivirus software, you may want to consider making a purchase. If you have the software installed, be sure to keep your virus definitions up to date, you can find the latest updates on your software manufacturer's website. I guess I disagree with Apple here, I have not seen any viruses infecting Mac OS X yet and I think that virus software right now is a waste of money. That may change. Mac OS X is not invulnerable but right now it is very very safe. 9) Optimize Your Hard Drive To ensure the best system performance and keep file damage to an all- time low, optimize your hard drive once a year. Third-party utilities such as Alsoft Disk Warrior Optimizer and Micromat Tech Tool Pro will defragment and optimize your drive. Again I have some questions about the value of optimizing your drive. Do not do this without having a complete backup. I have not found any benefit from using third-party software to optimize your hard drive. 10) Clean the Outside Too Dust and other debris can harm your computer's innards if you allow the stuff to build up around your workspace. Use a soft, dry, lint- free cloth, feather duster, or canned air to clean your Mac's outside as well as the surface areas around it. You can use a slightly water- dampened cloth to clean the screen. Do not use any type of liquid cleaner to clean your Mac. But I'd bet that a LOT of people would happily pay $100 to $150 to have their MBPs "detailed" where the thermal paste is inspected and reapplied if necessary. Before and after pictures would be a good practice, sorta like seeing the replaced parts from your auto mechanic. I'd also think that local service would be better than having to mail it off. Any takers? I am interested because both my brother and I are holding off on a purchase of one of these primarily because of heat issue. So if you would like to help on both the Seneca and Ambridge ... or just the Ambridge end .... let us know. Dave and Bob ----------------------- Directions to Seneca Valley High School campus From Pittsburgh and the Turnpike: I-79 North to Zelienople exit. Make a RIGHT on to Pa Route 68 at end of exit ramp. Go approximately 1/2-3/4 mile, and turn LEFT on to Hartmann Rd. There's a sign for Seneca Valley Schools. Follow Hartmann Rd. for approximately a mile; a golf course will be on your left. When the golf course ends, make a LEFT on to Seneca School Rd. The Seneca Valley High school campus will be on the left about 1/2 mile down the road. Make a LEFT into a large parking area, but do NOT enter the parking area. Drive past the parking area. You will round a slight curve. The Middle School will be on your right; the Intermediate High School on your left, with another large parking area in between. At the front entrance of the Middle School, make a LEFT and go through the middle part of the parking lot. At the end of the parking area when you reach the Intermediate High School building make a LEFT. You will now be headed in the opposite direction you came in. Our loading area will be at the end of this building. Pull along side the curb and wait in your vehicle; there are frequent parking patrols as parking is at a premium on the campus. A single gray metal door leads to a storage area in the basement of this Administrative wing of the building. This is where we will be bringing the computers from. I wanted to share with you something that I have been ruminating on that you may not be aware of. 1st - our new conference strategic plan lists as one of its goals: Goal 5 Part E) "Ensure that all local churches have internet capability" 2nd - our Pittsburgh DS Martha Orphe is heading up the rebuilding of 45 churches in New Orleans Can we develop a small church package which would provide standard set of software and hardware for distribution to the UM churches of our Conference and New Orleans with fewer than 100 in average worship attendance? I have been thinking about how both PC and Mac platforms could be simplified to make start up in churches lacking techno savvy possible. Center for Hope could be a conference wide source, as well as, provide training if you think we can handle it. We may even get into distance learning and workshops if needed. Let me know what you think. - - Bill Kemp (412) 798-2808 (412) 956-2565 (cell) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
