Thus, an AGP card will not fit a PCI slot, and vice versa. The best solution for the machine would be to swap out the existing AGP card with another AGP card that supports dual monitors on the same card. Cards that support dual monitors have two monitor ports on the same card, and they are typically configured with one of them being a VGA and the other a DVI. Of course, you can buy a DVI-to-VGA adapter and connect two VGA monitors. All of the current generation of nVidia cards support this feature with the appropriate adapters, but I'm not sure there's an under $150 solution here. The card you indicated, the GeForce2-MX, may support this feature. You'll have to check the card. The nVidia chipsets have supported this for a long time, whereas the ATI have started to more recently. On the cheap, the best solution would be to find a PCI video card to supplement the AGP that's already installed in the Quicksilver. You may be able to acquire one second hand as a pull from another G4, eBay, etc. I ran a similar solution for a while. It's real nice to have the extra real estate. I hope this helps you out. - Dave On Jun 2, 2006, at 2:15 PM, Flaccus M. B. It meets with strong resistance. People don't like to hear they spent $1500-$3000 for crap, and the only solution is spending another $1500-$3000. The same resistance I'd get if I said "dump that Gateway and get a Dell" - except with a Mac you've also got the whole "you're just saying that cause you drank the Apple kool-aid" nonsense. At this point all I do is throw the financial numbers at them. I ask them how much the Windows box cost. Then I ask them about AV software, etc. Then I give them an estimate on repair. Then I ask them how many times they've had to have the thing fixed. Then I ask them how much their time is worth per hour, and ask how long the machine has been down. Then I compare that cost with how much a Mac would have cost. Then I ask them to *consider* a Mac the next time they want to buy a new computer. Basically saying "Well.. it's too late now to fix this one. And I know you need to make it work. But whenever it's time to replace it, take a look. NO ONE wants to be told how stupid they were to fall for the PC line of bs, and then have it come down around their ears in a heap - a stinking heap at that. When I suggest that friends consider a Mac, I inevitably get the same line 'But they are more expensive'. I ask them to price in Office, etc. and compare that to a Mac with AppleWorks - which is more than adequate for most of them. ( I run in a crowd of retirees, etc. , so they are not doing anything elegant, and even if they were, iWorks would fill the bill.) This month's MacAddict has other low cost options to suggest as well. As the Newfies would say - ' Good on ya, b'y ' ( boy ). At one time I was able to burn CDs of purchased iTunes music in Toast. Of course, I can burn CDs using iTunes, but I like using Toast to burn CDs consisting of downloaded music, as well as songs I convert from vinyl LPs- using Toast's Spin Doctor software. When I phoned Apple Pro Care about this, they said there's no reason I shouldn't be able to burn CDs using non-Apple applications, and that I should check to make sure my version of Toast is current. After updating to the most current version of Toast 6, I still get this message. Does anyone else have this problem? (I realize I can move my LP-to-digital song files into iTunes, and burn those files to CDs using the iTunes app.) Thanks, Dana From pardeemp at gmail.com Wed Jun 7 21:20:04 2006 From: pardeemp at gmail.com (Michael Pardee) Date: Wed, 07 Jun 2006 23:20:04 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] burning iTunes songs in Toast In-Reply-To: <15214399.1149734979009.JavaMail.fabdana@mac.com> Message-ID: I remember reading something about this with one of the 6.x updates. The quantity is much less than the big haul at Seneca Valley, and the school is just a short drive from the Center for Hope in Ambridge. We'll have approximately two dozen disassembled iMacs, a half-dozen 5200-5400 series, a dozen monitors, three laser printers, and 3-4 boxes of keyboards, mice and other assorted accessories. Even being able to do just one trip would be a great help, and if you need to get off to work, we'll put you first in line. If you can join me, please drop me a line at or call my personal cell phone at 412-477-9188. As a note for later this summer, we are waiting to hear from the Butler Area School District about a large quantity of Macs they will be cycling out, and we anticipate another donation from the Seneca Valley Schools sometime in August. Both of these prospective donations have the potential to have large quantities, and we will probably need a lot of help getting them to Ambridge. Thanks for your involvement. Their goal, for their own ends, is to compromise your machine. My feeling is: this is my machine. If you want my information, you'd better ask nicely for it and give me something in return. The Airport still has to maintain an open wireless connection to the hotel, but it seems to me that my laptop is somehow protected by the additional firewall. Am I correct ? Or is my brokerage password still being sent in the open between the Airport and the hotel's router ? You would not be adding any security with such a setup. You should make sure that the connection to your brokerage is over HTTPS rather than plain HTTP. Jeff, I don't believe advertisers are "stealing" your machine by displaying GIF's or JPEG's and leaving a cookie. I'd be more concerned if I were a PC user downloading P2P file-sharing software (KaZaA, Morpheus, etc.). That may just be a difference in opinion between you and I, so I'll leave it at that. However, as someone who uses the web a great deal, I can't stand ads. They get in my way and really don't offer anything that I'm interested in. So, Jeff, I think we can agree there! A better way to block ads without touching essential system files is through the "Adblock" extension for Firefox. Coupled with constantly- updated rules from "Adblock Filterset.G Updater," it is the most comprehensive and effective way to block ads on the web without doing major open-OS surgery. I am running TIger with iLife06 on a MacBook with Final Cut Express HD, which also installed SoundTrack (and I can't find those loops at all!). I find one buncha loops under: Macintosh HD>Library>Application Support>GarageBand>Apple Loops> Apple Loops for GarageBand [contents: 1,106 loops] I find another bunch under: Macintosh HD>Library>Audio>Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops for GarageBand [contents: 1, 198 loops]. I suspect the first group came over on the Mayflower - well, on my older computer during the transfer [iLife04] and the second represents the iLife06 bunch. Can someone help me - are both needed? The monitor may be able to use lower resolutions, but, typically, it will not be as crisp or focused as the manufacturer-specified "native" or "best used" resolution. However, I would find it surprising to find a standard (non-widescreen) monitor that would not display 1024 x 768 nicely. The worst-case scenario would be to try it and see if you like it! The MacBook can use that monitor as either extra real estate for your desktop or mirroring. I believe the iBook is restricted to mirroring your desktop. Either laptop should be able to display 1024 x 768 effectively on a second monitor, but it's just a question of how good it will look on the model you're looking at purchasing. I hope this helps! - Dave On Jun 26, 2006, at 4:56 PM, Hank Niewola wrote: > I'm thinking to buy a Samsung 930b monitor to be a 2nd display for a > MacBook [1280x800 max] and an iBook [1024x768] using that Screen > Spanning Doctor script. > > The monitor's instructions say, "best when used at 1280x1024" > > Is that going to pose a problem? > > -- > > Hank Niewola > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > NPMUG mailing list > NPMUG at davesevick.com > http://davesevick.com/mailman/listinfo/npmug > From fstifel at verizon.net Wed Jun 28 19:16:31 2006 From: fstifel at verizon.net (Flaccus M. As Jim said, the FIRST restart after installation is quite long. I belive the installation process is being completed as the machine restarts. Subsequent restarts seem normal; under 30 seconds, and all applications now start promptly (iTunes takes maybe 10 seconds). No problems with any applications so far!
