Video Sandbox, Episode 19: it?s a mad, mad, mad, mad world Courtesy of MacsimumNews It?s been a crazed week. Limbaugh is found with Viagra in someone else?s name. Riots break out over a World Cup game. A new superbug is linked to tattooing. This is definitely a week where the Human Condition is in full flower. On this week?s Video Sandbox vodcast we?re going to celebrate with several Human Condition stories. And the stories that I just listed are in the mainstream media. We don?t go anywhere near there. Nowhere near there. Dennis will be here with another Op-Edd. Maybe I?ll tell you about Tiddles. Or maybe I?ll brush my teeth while singing some tune. Now that?s entertainment! And speaking of entertainment, I save the best for last. All I?ll say is that we have an extremely special guest visiting us this week. I can say no more. The original Maxtor 60GB drive has croaked. I've put in a Seagate 160 GB drive, and I'm attempting to install OS 10.4. Toward the end of an othwise happy installation, an error message pops up saying "there were errors installing the software. Please try installing again". I've scoured the Apple Support website and LowEndMac.com for specifications, hoping to find a statement of max drive size and/or any firmware patches, to no avail. I also Googled this error message, and found lots of other folks suffering, but no clear fixes. Does anyone have any insights into this predicament? Is there a 137GB hard drive limit on this machine? After a few seconds, the usual Quicktime "Q" disappears and is replaced with a Q over which floats a big questions mark. (Quicktime player itself works normally). Since I hate the warm wrist rests in the summertime (and think Apple's engineers are plain stupid for putting in a hard drive without a fan that overheats) I've been using the G3 iBook more than ever. It happily runs OS 9.1, and I'm content with MacWrite Pro on there since I use it mostly for writing. (And I should also admit that I still prefer OS 9 to X, but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I got my start in the System 6 days at a young age). However, I now have an AirPort base station (which I've had since February) and have my iMac hard-wired to it in one room with the iBooks in another room. I had intended to not use the G3 anymore on the web, but my recent frequent use of this machine has caused me to bring it back and now I am hoping to find an old original Airport card for it. If anyone has a spare Airport (original) card, let me know if you want to make an offer. Once I get that installed I will probably be buying a new battery for it so I can use it on the road again (I've found good deals on batteries on the web, but not on Airport cards--most of the cards I've found seem to cost as much as the computer is worth). Now I find that I need OS9 to install a limited version of FileMaker Pro, for some organizational work I have to get updated- it's what the organization's system uses. Is there a way to install OS9 without making it my dominant system, and without trashing my newer OSX ?? Thanks in advance for the opinions.
