Message-ID: <5BF56444-46F5-4B30-96A1-966331F3CD4D@borkware.com> Hey NPMUGGERS, I recently acquired a Mac Mini for home-networking and website-backup purposes, and it's working great. Only one weird thing: When the mini is on and running, the UPS it's plugged in to make some strange noises - quiet clicking sounds almost like a hard drive seeking, but it's definitely coming from the UPS (APC Back-Ups Pro 1000). I don't get any noise when the mini is asleep, or turned off. I also don't get noise (that I can hear) when heavy-draw devices (like a G5 or a PC) are on. Anyone ever run into anything similar? So, either you've got a lot more plugged into that UPS than you're giving credit for, the circuit is drawing more collectively (something else in the house on the same circuit), or the UPS is bad. You can try another outlet (that you can confirm is on another circuit) and see if you get the same problem. If you've minimized the amount of devices plugged into the UPS, ensured you've got a minimal circuit load, and still get the clicking, you may have a bad UPS. Don't take risks with a clicking UPS. Hope this helps! - Dave On Feb 2, 2006, at 4:16 PM, Mark Dalrymple wrote: > Hey NPMUGGERS, > > I recently acquired a Mac Mini for home-networking and website-backup > purposes, and it's working great. > > Only one weird thing: When the mini is on and running, the UPS it's > plugged in to make some strange noises - quiet clicking sounds almost > like a hard drive seeking, but it's definitely coming from the UPS > (APC Back-Ups Pro 1000). > > I don't get any noise when the mini is asleep, or turned off. When I select the old drive and the new drive will it mirror the contents from the old drive to the new drive or will it just reformat both of them? Do I need to boot from an external disk and then run Disk Utility in order to select the drives and create the RAID 1 set? FWIW, I have not attempted to turn my boot drive into a RAID array. I have a single drive as my boot disk, and two more drives set up as a RAID 1 array for data only. I've been using this array as a backup target for two Macs and several Quantum SNAP servers. The GUI interface of Drive Utility does not provide the complete set of tasks needed to maintain the array. Software RAID is supported in Mac OS X as a carry-over from the Unix-like underpinnings. Does it work? Yes, it does the job. Is it worth it? Well, you have to decide. As Marty pointed out, you're probably going to need to re-format the drive to "stripe" it. "Striping" the drive is the effective format and preparation of a drive for RAID use. While more intrusive and elaborate with the higher RAID levels (like 5 where you have 3 drives minimum and the options for hot-standby), prepping a drive for an array will, in any situation, wipe the existing data. Something else to consider: your RAID partition is only going to be as big as your smallest physical drive. In other words, you CAN make a RAID array with a 40 and 80 gig drive, but the Array is only going be 40 G max. Further consider the following scenario: Say that 40 G drive fails, the 80 G will kick-in. You go to the store to buy a replacement drive for the 40 Gig. Th store no longer sells 40 G drives, and the minimum size available is 200 Gigs. While the 200 G drive will work fine as a replacement, your 80 Gig and 200 Gig will still be working with the original 40 Gig Partition, and I don't believe there's a way to increase a RAID partition (although, I have not worked with the latest resizing utilities on the bench - maybe someone else has the answer on that one). Effectively, you'll have 80 & 200 Gigs, but you'll only be able to use your original array size of 40 Gigs. With these factors in mind, I would suggest buying a pair of speedy, matching drives at the outset (rather than using your existing drive). You just have to gauge how much your time is worth. While you could backup all of your data from the original drive to DVD, you would need to do a complete system re-load after erasing your original drive to join it into the RAID array. Hey, it would save you the cost of another drive, but I would, personally, compare the costs of time to do the backup v. hardware. Being you're going to RAID to avoid optical backup, I would think you'd want to consider another way. If you do decide to buy a pair of new drives as a RAID array, consider buying a hardware RAID controller. Very effective ATA RAID-1 controllers are on the market these days for 50-100 dollars. Not only does the hardware do the job of the software RAID, but it also does it faster and, in my opinion, more reliably as it does not rely on the CPU of the machine for the job (it's a controller, it's got the horsepower on the card). Software RAID is just that: a program that needs to be run by the CPU of your Mac. At the end of the day, you would have your RAID drive Array as one drive and your original as the second. You could boot from your original drive, run a copy utility (like "ditto" from the command line in Terminal), and copy the entire original drive to the array attached to your new controller. After you're done, shutdown, remove the original drive from the machine, and you should be able to boot right up with the new array. Hold onto your original drive for a little while as a "backup" to make sure things are kosher with the new setup, but I think you'd find things to be working considerably better. After you're satisfied things are in working order, you could go out and buy an external FireWire case for the drive from OWC (http://www.macsales.com) or somewhere and make it portable storage. I hope this doesn't overwhelm you, but I'm available if you have more questions. BTW: if you do decide to buy new drives, go as large as you can afford. Again, your RAID drive partition will be only as big as your smallest drive. We really haven't had one since CPro141, which was around 1993. Other notable ones of ages past include Font Finder, Mosaic, Steroid, Tetricycle, and Sexy Ladies. Always be safe when dealing with your downloaded applications. The threat is much greater now than it was in the early 1990s because of the popularity of the internet. Also, I applaud the folks who got the news published so quickly. It used to take a long time for virus reports to be written...and they were usually about the umpteenth strain of nVIR back then. Just thought I'd pass it along...wow, do those old trojan horses (and viruses) bring back memories... Message-ID: We are moving the South Hills Village meeting time from 6pm to 5pm this week, and limiting it to one hour! This is in response to a request from the Apple store - they have received word from Apple Corp. that they are going to be having staff training (on all the new gear) bi-monthly from now on - every two weeks on (you guessed it) Sunday at 6pm. Obviously Apple noticed the same thing we did - Sunday at 6pm is a great time for a meeting in the store! Therefore, we're going to have to schedule our MUG meeting at 5pm - 6pm. I've spoken with Dan @ the Apple Store, and they're happy to accommodate this move. We're still working out the long term details - for the sake of consistency, we'll probably keep all future meetings to this schedule. Because of this change, we will NOT be having food beforehand at the Roxy - too early. Instead we'll have a post-meeting meal right after (at 6pm) So, to sum up: South Hills Village MUG meeting - SHV Apple Store - 5pm Sunday Feb 26 Post-meeting food for whoever wants to stick arounf - 6pm at the Roxy Basically, the same kind of schedule as the Shadyside Apple store (which is also starting this training thing for employees) I hope to see everyone there! In the Land of Linux, damage control is built in since user accounts have limited permission (limited access to underlying system processes). If a user's account gets infected, it generally can't do more than damage that user's account. I don't currently set up specific "root" and "user" accounts on my mac- does anyone else? Any informed opinions about whether this will improve security, or are there root exploits that will somehow just bypass this anyways? What are people doing, if anything, to prevent the spread of malicious code? FWIW, I tried the "Free" VireX that comes with .mac subscriptions... The user you created on install (The "admin" account) is NOT root, but what OSX calls an Administrator. Basically, this is a user with permission to add/remove users, install software, etc. What Windows people would call a "Power User." Kinda like the user created during a Red Hat or SUSE install. The admin does not have rights to other user's folders (or home dir) by default. So you are correct - if someone gets infected, they can only destroy themselves. "admin" users, however, because they have R/ W to apps and shared libraries, can also damage the OS/software (but not the other user home dirs) "root" does exist on your OSX box - it's just "Disabled" - login is disabled, but you can still "sudo" to perform tasks as root. Also, by default in OSX, the root password is blank (don't panic) - and OSX by default denies ANY remote login with a blank password. You can enable root via NetInfo Manager - at which point it'll prompt for a new root password. Now, this is not as "hard" as Linux by default - root exploits can occur by simple sudo requests.. that is, the script in question fires a sudo command, prompts for the user's password (which is the Admin password, which allows sudo privileges) and you're off. Both of the latest "security exploits" rely on this Social Engineering - that is, getting the user to enter the password for you. (It's a lot easier to convince someone to give you a password then to try and crack it.) Which is why, for all my deployments, I treat "admin" as top-secret restricted, root as "No Such Agency" and have all users setup with User accounts. You typically want one person "on site" with Admin rights who understands the power/responsibility, and everyone else with User accounts. I also Enable root by default and change it's password to something "hard" - and lately I've been going a step farther and restricting SSH to certificate-based authentication only. On the topic of AV software, the product I strongly recommend is (unfortunately) only available for Corporate & Educational customers - no retail or home users. That product is Sophos. When it comes to OSX support, not to mention actual AV success & speed, they are the best. (And what I use) I'm working with them (in my spare time) to see if I can provide licenses to individuals through a group package of some sort. VireX is crap. And Symantec is getting worse and worse as times goes on. I'm actually kinda excited about the new trojans - they don't really work well, aren't very effective, and are stirring up a lot of security conversations, which gives me an excuse to ramble on about something I get all geeky over. ;) Charles On Feb 21, 2006, at 9:41 PM, Douglas Green wrote: > There have been two articles this week about new viruses targeting > Macs OSX (worms, actually). Well, the new plastic User Group discount cards are good year round, are 5% off all Apple products, and 10% off all other products. Doing the math on any Apple Store purchase brings a very nice bottom line ... many dollars saved. Your new cards ( if you have paid the $25 ) have just been shipped and should arrive by Friday Feb 24 in a special pack. If you want one ... contact me ... I'll print it and send it out to you ASAP. Why do we do this? To encourage everyone to shop locally to support the Pittsburgh economy. These deals many times BEAT online shopping. Much like SIT, the GZIP is a compressed archive that can be expanded by, guess what, Stuffit Expander (which should already be installed on your machine). Essentially, it's just a wrapper and, in itself, pretty harmless. The real file within that archive is the .dmg Disk Image file (as indicated in the filename). While I can't vouch for what's inside that image in terms of security, it should mount right on your desktop like a normal disk. For your second item: yes, I can tell you have gained quite the skill with screenshots. I'm happy as long as they don't get too big to download. ".dmg" is the file name extension for "Disk Image", which is a file on the disk that the Mac can treat like it was a disk drive. Kind of a VirtualFloppy. So in general, both are innocuous. The Disk Image (.dmg) can contain *anything*. It all depends on the person who created it. You have to decide if you trust "www.binaryminded.com" enough to expose your system to them. The Chuck Joiner and Pam Borys Podcast interview for Mac Voices #601 : We talk to P.A.M. Borys of the MacWoburn Macintosh Users Group and Terry Pollard of the South Mississippi Mac Users Group (SM-MUG) about a new friendship that resulted from the devestation on the Gulf Coast area of the United States. MacWoburn recently sent the first shipment of what they hope to be many "Rescue Macs" to SM-MUG in an effort to help replace equipment lost in the storm. SM-MUG is handling the distribution of the equipment in their area so it reaches those who need it most. Find out how the relief effort got started and who you can contact to help. My question is that i noticed drive space seemed to be severely lacking when i transferred my music to the eMac, which took up 9 GB on the iBook. I am now down to 4 GB left on the eMac. When i examined the folders the library is 22 GB on the eMac but only 1.5 on the iBook. Now is there a way to decrease the size or what else should i do to regain some space? matt bocchi mattbocchi at gmail.com From dsoumas at nightprods.com Tue Feb 28 17:06:07 2006 From: dsoumas at nightprods.com (Dave Soumas) Date: Tue, 28 Feb 2006 19:06:07 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] Library In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <5f56eeacc696775c35c0b938be6e7276@nightprods.com> Matt, There's lots of stuff that get stored in the library. Mail and Safari Cache can wind up being the two biggest eaters of your storage capacity. Other programs (Appleworks, Freehand) have caches as well for downloaded content, etc., that can accrue in your Application Support folder. When all else fails, just browse through and see what you recognize. - Dave On Feb 28, 2006, at 6:08 AM, Matt Bocchi wrote: > I have an eMac 700mHz with a 40 GB drive and an iBook Dual USB with a > 20 GB drive. It may be from a program crash (Photoshop, iDVD, etc.) or even be from an operating system crash. These sorts of things used be stored in the /tmp folder of your main hard drive. That might have changed in Tiger or something. If you look in the 501 folder, you should be able to figure out what it was that caused the problem. For example, here's the pwd of one of my recent crashes: /private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/dsoumas/mail I'm running Panther. As I mentioned, Tiger might have moved it. From the above, you can tell that the temporary cache/memory dump information was placed into my Temp folder, under my name, and under the application (in this case, mail). Delve deeper into the folder and see what program(s) was (or were) the problem child(ren). It sounds line you're on the right track. - Dave On Feb 28, 2006, at 7:37 PM, bocchi wrote: > In response to your email i looked through the library and notice the > logs > Console> 501 folder is 19.5 GB, do you know what this is? > > Thanks > Matt >
