I've looked up your Samsung monitor, and I hope I can answer your questions. A CNET product review indicates that your monitor has a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. Regardless of whether you are using the VGA connector or the DVI connector, you will get the SHARPEST picture if you use that resolution, since that is the actual number of pixels on the LCD. Since you say you are using a DVI-VGA cable, I am assuming that your iBook only has a VGA video output connector. My understanding is that a pure DVI-to-DVI connection might improve the color range shown on the display, but again (IMO) that takes a back seat to the sharpness of the display. I know that this is only a partial answer to you question, since I don't know what model of iBook you have, and what video resolutions it supports. Your rule of thumb seems to work well. I devised a test - block/disable the proxy and try to use applications. iTunes didn't work, but StreamRipperX did, so I can surmise that iTunes tried to use the proxy, and StreamRipperX didn't. Why this test didn't occur to me earlier, I don't know - now I feel silly :-P > I'm not a coder, so I don't know how accessible Apple made the > network frameworks, my assumption is Firefox and crew just found it > easier to package a Proxy config within the browser rather then > trying to tie into the different OS-specific network libraries. Firefox already had a built-in proxy on other platforms, Opera is the only major browser not supporting SOCKS proxies. I'll have to make a mental note to myself to use the proper Mac libraries when I make network-aware applications :-) thanks, -Logan From patrick at patrickcranston.com Tue Dec 5 07:57:22 2006 From: patrick at patrickcranston.com (Patrick Cranston) Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2006 09:57:22 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] Safari market share continues to grow. I'm printing on borderless 4X6 paper and printing with the "borderless" setting. I am trying to acheive a pencil thin border on my photos and it appears it cannot be done using this size of paper and on the borderless setting. The image looks as if it has the thin border, and the pdf of the image does as well, but when I go to print, the thin line never appears on the printed version. No matter how the border is created, (I've tried multiple methods) it doesn't come out in the printed version. HOWEVER, when I use a larger size of paper or a non-borderless setting, the border comes out fine. As a consequence, I then need to use a paper cutter to trim the image which I'd rather not. December 11, 2006 (Computerworld) -- Longtime Windows development chief James Allchin wrote in a January 2004 e-mail to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and company co-founder Bill Gates that the software vendor had "lost sight" of customers' needs and said he would buy a Mac if he wasn't working for Microsoft. "In my view, we lost our way," Allchin, the co-president of Microsoft's platform and services division, wrote in an e-mail dated Jan. 7, 2004. The e-mail was presented as evidence late last week in the Iowa antitrust trial, Comes v. Microsoft Corp. "I think our teams lost sight of what bug-free means, what resilience means, what full scenarios mean, what security means, what performance means, how important current applications are, and really understanding what the most important problems our customers face are. I see lots of random features and some great vision, but that does not translate into great products." Allchin, who has headed various aspects of Windows development since the mid-1990s but plans to retire at the end of this year with the shipping of Windows Vista, later wrote in the same e-mail that he would buy a Mac if he was not a Microsoft employee, according to transcripts from proceedings Thursday and Friday in the class-action case obtained and posted by Groklaw.net, an open-source legal Web site. Jim Hibbs, a spokesman for Wixted Pope Nora Thompson & Associates, a Des Moines public relations firm employed by the law firm prosecuting the case, confirmed that Allchin's quotes were read directly from his e-mails by the plaintiffs' lawyers. The case, filed in February 2000, charges that Microsoft used its monopoly position to overcharge Iowans for its software. Held in the Polk County District Court in Des Moines, it is one of two remaining antitrust cases -- the state of Mississippi's case is the other -- brought by the U.S. government and multiple states against Microsoft starting in the late 1990s. In 2004, Microsoft settled a class-action lawsuit accusing it of overcharging customers in California for $1.1 billion. That same year, it was also hit by a $613 million fine by the European Commission for monopolistic behavior for its free bundling of Windows Media Player with Windows. Microsoft, which has appealed the ruling, was hit by a further $356 million fine in October for failing to comply with the ruling. Microsoft, through its public relations firm, Waggener Edstrom Worldwide Inc., was unable to comment on the Allchin e-mail immediately. Allchin has said in the past that Vista's delayed arrival -- it shipped five years after Windows XP was released -- was the result of a desire to improve its security and make it perform bug-free from the get-go. As in past antitrust trials against Microsoft, much of the evidence came in the form of e-mails from Allchin and other Microsoft executives. Ironically, Allchin himself is quoted in two internal memos directing employees to get rid of all e-mails after 30 days. "This is not something you get to decide," he wrote on Jan. 23, 2000. "This is company policy. Do not think this is something that only applies to a few people. Do not think it will be okay if I do this, it hasn't caused any problems so far. Do not archive your mail. Do not be foolish. 30 days." Iowa's counsel also presented evidence designed to show that an ostensibly charitable program from Microsoft for developing countries and schools was actually designed to ensure that Windows remained preinstalled on PCs to discourage competition from the open-source Linux operating system. The so-called Education Government Incentive (or Edgi) program, appears "to be based on Microsoft generosity, but in fact the program is intended only for use where Linux is a threat," according to Roxanne Conlin, co-counsel for Iowa. Conlin also presented evidence of a job description for Bill Gates' technical assistant, whose primary duty was to make sure no permanent record of Gates' e-mail existed, Conlin said, according to transcripts. -- One of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the great struggle for independence. -- Charles A. On occasion, usually determined by the need to finish a project, an apparently random font will 'disappear' from the font list - in Pages, iDVD, and others. However, it is still in its location, be it Library>fonts or wherever. I have found if I copy the font into User>Library>fonts that our beloved iBook 'remembers' it is there after all - and all is well, sometimes for weeks, until another font 'disappears' .... Sounds like a corrupted font list. But I have no idea how to fix -- can anyhow give a suggestion? BTW the iBook has Font Reseve on it, but these are fonts kept in location, right where they came from Apple. Thanks! -- For HIS glory, Hank Niewola Come Alive! This particular topic on the toxic misuse of the internet by people to basically YELL at each other is worth reading. David Pogue in his column today takes the letter of a 15 y/o written to him ( as a feedback letter on a recent Zune review ) ... and describes in detail my worst fears about hosting this listserve for you all... ...... that people can be so cruel and unbelievably hurtful from his/ her anonymous computer keyboard without caring at all about the people on the other end of the conversation. The common term is called "flaming" ..... I have experienced this first hand in business with younger computer techs ..... and among older people who now have found another way to grumble and complain with a much more powerful megaphone called "the internet." Again, I am posting this column as a measure of thanks for your ongoing civility on our list. But things can get out of hand ...... read on .... from the desk of: -- David Pogue Tech columnist, The New York Times www.davidpogue.com www.missingmanuals.com -- 1. From the Desk of David Pogue: Whatever Happened to Online Etiquette? ========================================================== "Dear David, first off i would like to tell you that you are full of **** and did not research the zune enough to know your facts. The following are incorrect, and not limited to: podcasts, giftcards, looks(which is an oppinion), controls, and content. Also i would like to inform you that on the day of the launch(nov 14) there is a sceduled firmware upgrade which will most likely disband the 3 by 3 rule [which limits songs beamed between Zunes to three playbacks within three days], and the zune marketplace is also to offer video content about one month after launch. In my oppinion you should be fired for wrighting such a biast article in a (somewhat)professional newspaper. Oh and in case you think i work for microsoft or have bad grammar, or something, you should know that im 15!" The deeper we sail into the new online world of communications, the sadder I get about its future. I'm OK with criticism, I'm fine with disagreement, I'm perfectly capable of handling angry mail. That's not the issue here (although my teenage correspondent above was, in fact, wrong about every single one of his points). I've even accepted personal attacks as part of the job. I'm a columnist; the heat comes with the kitchen. But what's really stunning is how hostile *ordinary* people are to each other online these days. Slashdot and Digg.com are extremely popular sites for tech fans. Each discussion begins with the presentation of an article or Web page--and then opens up the floor for discussion. Lately, an increasing number of the discussions devolve into name-calling and bickering. Someone might submit, say, this item to Digg: 685 diggs. "AWESOME astronomy poem." (posted by MetsFan 3 days ago) Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky, Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are. Before long, the people's feedback begins, like this: by baddude on 12/11/06 What's yr problem, moron. You already said it's a star, why would you then wonder what it is. Get a clue, or a life. by neverland2 on 12/11/06 Dugg down as inaccurate. Stars do not twinkle. It's the shifting atmosphere that causes an apparent twinkle. Or were you stoned all through science class? by mrobe on 12/11/06 yo neverland2--It's a poem, idiot. Nobody's claiming that stars twinkle. Ever heard of poetic license? Honestly, the intellectual level of you people is right up there with a gnat's. ..and so on. What's worse is that the concentration of the nasty people increases as the civil ones get fed up and leave. What's going on here? My current theories: * On the Internet, you're anonymous. Since you don't have to face the person you're dumping on, you don't see any reason to display courtesy. * On the Internet, you're anonymous. You worry that your comments might get lost in the shuffle, so you lay it on thick to enhance your noticeability. * The open toxicity is all part of the political climate. We've learned from the Red state-Blue state talking heads that open hostility can pass for meaningful conversation. * Young people who spend lots of time online are, in essence, replacing in-person social interactions with these online exchanges. With so much less experience conversing in the real world, they haven't picked up on the value of treating people civilly. That is, they haven't yet hit the stage of life when getting things like friends, a spouse and a job depend on what kind of person you are. * Many parents haven't been teaching social skills (or haven't been around to teach them) for years, but Web 2.0 is suddenly making it apparent for the first time. ("Web 2.0" describes sites like Digg and Slashdot, where the audience itself provides material for the Web site.) I'd give just about anything to hear what 15-year-old Josh's parents would say if they knew how little respect he holds for adults (let alone the English language). Then again, maybe they wouldn't be surprised a bit. The real shame, though, is that the kneejerk "everyone else is an idiot" tenor is poisoning the potential the Internet once had. People used to dream of a global village, where maybe we can work out our differences, where direct communication might make us realize that we have a lot in common after all, no matter where we live or what our beliefs. But instead of finding common ground, we're finding new ways to spit on the other guy, to push them away. The Internet is making it easier to attack, not to embrace. Maybe as the Internet becomes as predominant as air, somebody will realize that online behavior isn't just an afterthought. Maybe, along with HTML and how to gauge a Web site's credibility, schools and colleges will one day realize that there's something else to teach about the Internet: Civility 101. ----- This week's Pogue's Posts blog: http://www.nytimes.com/technology/poguesposts/index.html?8cir&emc=cir ----- Visit David Pogue on the Web at: http://www.davidpogue.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Also look for more flaws in third-party apps (such as the 2 recently announced in MS Word) that run on OSX. I personally am excited that they're doing this - Apple tends to be pretty close-mouthed about security flaws. While they are good about sending out security updates, the documentation on what they fix tends to be vague (typically something like "fixes a flaw in PHP scripting" - not very helpful). So some third-party "white hat" attention will only help. So long as it's not pure BS, like the "we can hack a Mac in 10 minutes using a flaw in the Airport software" which turned out to be a flaw in a third-party wireless card, and not Airport. (and how many mac users out there use third-party wireless cards in their macs?) By the end of January we should have a pretty good feel for how secure OSX really is. My gut says most "security flaws" will be extremely minor, local-only, or rare. :) On Dec 19, 2006, at 4:11 PM, jamescorsale wrote: > Hi. > What are some things Apple users should keep their eyes peeled > for regarding the results of the research? > Jim > http://news.com.com/2061-10793_3-6144833.html? > part=rss&tag=2547-1_3-0-5&subj=news > > _______________________________________________ > NPMUG mailing list > NPMUG at davesevick.com > http://davesevick.com/mailman/listinfo/npmug -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Top 10 listed .... Message-ID: <70FF141A-F392-4D5F-A335-13BE8526278D@davesevick.com> Tech's Top 10 Hot Growth Companies Apple and Google continued to log big gains this year. Suppliers to chipmakers and companies in the telecom sector also scored robust growth in 2006 By Arik Hesseldahl In our ranking of the technology industry's hot growth companies this year, you can see a broad picture of the tech economy in 2006. Apple and Google soared on the strength of two seemingly unstoppable trends, the iPod and online advertising, respectively. In addition, memory chips were hot, but it was the companies that supply chipmakers, not the chipmakers themselves, that saw healthy growth. For a look at the top 10 hot growth tech companies, read on? http://images.businessweek.com/ss/06/12/1221_techgrowth/index_01.htm ((((excerpts))) Apple is #2 2. Apple Computer Have you heard of a little device called the iPod? Of course you have. Apple sold 39 million of the devices -- on top of 5.3 million of its Macintosh computers -- in fiscal year 2006, which ended Sept. 30. In that same time period, the company rung up $19.3 billion in sales, up 39% from the previous 12 months, and $1.9 billion in profits. Google is #4 4. Google In 2002 there were rumors that Yahoo! would acquire Google, for a price said to be in the neighborhood of $700 million. In 2003, Google reported more than double that amount in revenue. In 2004 it doubled that amount, and doubled it again in 2005. Today that same $700 million Yahoo considered paying for Google will get you about one-half of 1% of Google shares. What will Google do next? Here's a hint: It will grow. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My buddy sent this to me - can we help him? I attemped to update the bios in my MacBook Pro. I downloaded the updates, then attempted to follow the directions. I shut down the machine. Then pressed the power button till something happened. The thing really let out a loud beep, which started me and i picked up my finger off the power button. I repressed the power button shortly after the flash update had started, which powered off the machine. Now the bios is hammered up and it wont boot. Is there a simple fix? -- For HIS glory, Hank Niewola Director Come Alive Ministries www.comealive.org From fozard at nauticom.net Wed Dec 27 23:04:54 2006 From: fozard at nauticom.net (Fozard) Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2006 01:04:54 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] From Apple Web Site: CMU & MACs Message-ID: <45935E86.2040101@nauticom.net> http://www.apple.com/education/profiles/carnegie/ From calliex at mac.com Thu Dec 28 08:18:11 2006 From: calliex at mac.com (Joe Condle) Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2006 10:18:11 -0500 Subject: [NPMUG] Good Video Podcast/Tutorials for Mac Message-ID: <3DF0A586-3C82-428C-8ACD-704ECD6A4C4D@mac.com> Happy New Year all. I found the following link on macsurfer. http://screencastsonline.com/sco/info/newtothemac.html These are quicktime tutorials on all things Mac. They can also be downloaded as video podcasts. I watched the first one on the dock and it was very good. Also compares Windows to OSX, good for switchers. Joe C. Message-ID: <3B7E6F7D-372D-4542-B156-0A881B7E9AA5@davesevick.com> Well, it's been a long frustrating month with my Motorola DVR provided by Armstrong Cable here in Cranberry Township. I actually went to the Armstrong station to try to get the TiVO card in November 2006 .... needed for installation of a TiVO 3 in a special slot ... and Armstrong said "we don't do that ... sorry...." So ( with no choice ) I went with their DVR unit that does HD recording like a TiVO 3. The cost was an additional $4 / month "rental" ... better than the TiVO $13 charge in addition to buying an $800 TiVO unit. Then ... tonight I saw a report from Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal on the Post Gazette site .... mirroring what I was preparing to write .... almost to the word .... So this is a big "what he said ..." http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06362/749636-96.stm In short .... - TiVO is a bit too pricey right now - The Motorola unit (that has HD) via Comcast he uses ( I've got the same one via Armstrong Cable ) is very clunky and slow .... but cheap to "rent" for right now ------ Verdict ...... - Keep the Motorola HD DVR unit and Armstrong service to tide me over :-) - I'm waiting to see what 2007 brings with TiVO 3 advances and Apple's probable iTV entrance into the market at MacWorld .... I hope this helps anyone pondering the move to HD TV .... Dave -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am wondering how to return it...they say I should have it returned by January 25 on the box so I was hoping to get it in the mail this week. There is a label that came in the box which I have, should I place it somewhere? And when I take it to the post office, how should I handle it? Scott
