Threading is the big one. Along with that comes "thread safety." The way you optimize for multiple cores is completely different than the way you think/optimize for single core. And there are other things that don't have to do with multi-core per se, like processing model (simple foreground/background processes versus preemptive scheduling), threading model (cooperative versus preemptive), and memory management (static/fixed versus dynamic/virtual). -- Give a man a fire, and he will stay warm for a day. New Movie Reviews: Unbounded Bravery in Unfriendly Skies By MANOHLA DARGIS ==================================================== A persuasively narrated, scrupulously tasteful re-creation of the downing of the fourth and final plane hijacked by Islamist terrorists on Sept. 11, "United 93" is the first Hollywood feature film to take on that dreadful day. Preceded by both the expected bluster and genuine relief that the film is as good as it is - and it is good, in a temple-pounding, sensory-overloading way that can provoke tears and a headache - it was written and directed by the British filmmaker Paul Greengrass, who has crossed the pond to make the feel-bad American movie of the year. Drawing on different sources, including the 9/11 Commission Report the report and family members, Mr. Greengrass follows the same trajectory as the report, with most of the screen time devoted to the period between takeoff and the excruciating moments before the plane crashed. The film carries the standard caution that it is "a creative work based on fact," yet Mr. Greengrass's use of nonfiction tropes, like the jagged camerawork and the rushed, overlapping shards of naturalistic dialogue, invests his storytelling with a visceral, combat-zone verisimilitude. And yet at the same time, beat for beat, the whole thing plays out very much according to the Hollywood playbook. Donaldson) Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2006 20:49:04 -0400 Subject: [NPMUG] This month's Center for Hope wish list Message-ID: Dear Mac friends: We've got another work day planned at the Center for Hope this Saturday, May 6. Our recent frenzy in getting computers tuned up and packaged for Hurricane Katrina victims has exhausted our supply of iMac parts. We are in immediate need of the following: ? USB mice ? USB keyboards ? internal CD/ROMs for tray-load iMacs We have approximately 10 early iMacs sitting awaiting CDs. Obviously, our only source is a dead or critically-ill iMac. If you have one you've hesitated disposing of, or know somebody who has one, the parts are you're sitting on are a gold mine to us. We also have some fatally-injured iMacs that will receive wholesale transplants when parts become available. For example we have a 350 mhz slot-load iMac with a blown analog video board that will receive one from an identical iMac that has other fatal non-video problems. It's an ugly task, but our hourly rate is fair :-) Try to think of us as the Dr. Starzl of Macs... It's possible because two people with differing problems saw the potential of their machines as a parts bank for us. We've reluctantly come to the conclusion that Macs older than PowerPC vintage have extremely limited use anymore. They simply can't have a more-recent OS installed that can handle current Internet needs. If the Beige Mac you wish to pass along to use has a model designation with less than 4 digits (i.e. 6100, 7500, 5500, etc) it's got a 68000 series processor. If you want to pass along an older Mac, please email me at so I can access it viability. We currently have a good supply of older machines, and we need to seek homes for them where access to the Internet is not a requirement. We are currently preparing LC series Macs for environments with young children. In the past year, our clientele has consistently told us that the ability to connect with the Internet is the most important thing to them. To help them get there, we need to give them a Mac that can run OS 9.x. Hand-in-hand with that comes a need to get 72-pin or newer RAM in sizes GREATER than 8 mb. We ideally should be passing along an OS 9.x Mac with 32 mb RAM or more to make their computing experience as positive as possible. Here's a short list of things we ALWAYS need at the Center for Hope. In no particular order: 1. 3.5-inch SCSI and IDE disk drives LARGER than 250mb. 2. External CD-ROMs with SCSI cable. We have many old Macs lacking CDs, and having an external CD makes them much more useful to the new owners. 3. Mac 6100 series video adapter cables. We have several of these Macs, but they need a special adapter cable to connect the monitor. We get the boxes, but usually not the adapter cable. Without the adapter, these machines sit in the corner. 4. Mac LC series 12-inch monitors, particularly color. The video on the original Mac LC can't support newer monitors, and we seem to have more LC boxes than available monitors for them. These machines make great computers for small children, and we place them in environments where young children use them. 5. Miscellaneous power adapters. Strange as it seems, we get some stuff that use those little brick-like power adapters, but without the adapter. If you have any lying about, please label it with what it was from so we can try to match it up with an orphaned printer or other accessory. 6. 100 mb Zip disks. We have several external Zip drives we can offer to people, but few disks for them. 7. Mac and VGA video cables. 8. If you have any RAM for Apple PowerBooks NEWER than the 100 series, please email me. Ditto for WORKING PowerBook power supplies. 9. WORKING printers, Apple serial bus, USB and ethernet. We seem to get a lot that simply don't work. It takes time to test them and find that out. 10. New Ink jet and toner cartridges, and ImageWriter ribbons. Check those drawers for ink that was for that printer you no longer have. Our King of the Printers, John Hamill, can get printers tested and ready for distribution, but without ink they can't help someone who can't afford to buy that first cartridge... 11. Old Mac owner manuals. It's a wonderful thing when we can give a new Mac owner a copy of the Apple manual for their computer and/or printer. Here's some items we regret we simply cannot use: ? Modems slower than 56k. The software that came with 56k modems is needed also. ? Scanners. If you have a WORKING USB scanner, or a name-brand film scanner (i.e. Nikon, etc.), please email me. Alas, the SCSI scanners of our past are not practical any longer. Your continued support by pestering friends and co-workers for their past Mac treasures is what keeps this thing going. Thank you!
